Here we are again at the tail end of the year, and we hope you’ve been enjoying the stories we’ve put out for you. This issue, we explore the beauty in our backyard that, unbeknownst to many, is actually home to many wonderful species of animals. Find out what the volunteer guides of the Naked Hermit Crabs have to share about the Pasir Ris mangroves and other nature spots in our GRC. Happy reading! Lam Lee Choo Hearttoheart In November, we celebrate the most significant festival in the Indian culture – Deepavali! Also known as the Festival of Lights, Deepavali (or Diwali) spiritually signifies the triumph of light over darkness. The Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC honored the colourful occasion with numerous celebrations held across the divisions. With activities like rangoli painting, cultural performances and the lighting of oil lamps, the authenticity of Deepavali shone through and captivated the thousands who attended. Sengkang Community Club held its annual Healthy Lifestyle Carnival in October with activities like free health checks (i.e. spinal scan, blood pressure), health talks and fitness demonstrations to encourage residents to pay attention to their physical wellbeing. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) are both related to first-aid and if utilised right, can potentially save lives. To help residents be prepared for the unexpected (e.g. a stranger or loved one suffers a cardiac arrest), training workshops were organised to equip them with the knowledge and skills to perform CPR with the use of the AED machine. The half-day programme ran four times in November and was free for those who wanted to learn. Through the workshops, close to 100 participants were assessed and awarded with a twoyear validity CPR & AED certificate. A skill learned is a life saved! The rejuvenation of White Sands Shopping Centre is almost complete. Since the start of 2015, the mall began undergoing upgrades to give residents a lifestyle destination they can be proud of. Being the major mall in Pasir Ris, the renovations came with some inconveniences; but residents say it was a paltry price to pay for an enhanced mall with greater shopping and dining options. “It wasn’t easy when the mall was partially shut during the renovation period,” expressed Mr Lee Sheng. “But seeing how White Sands is shaping up, the wait looks to be worth it!” Conceptualised to reflect the changing needs of the community, the upgraded mall is set to meet the everyday needs of residents, and is an ideal getaway from the hustle-and-bustle of the city. Now buzzing with 135 new tenants, the arrival of established brands like Starbucks Coffee, Cedele, Casa Italia and The Soup Spoon Union is a breath of fresh air for many longtime residents who grew up with White Sands. Ms Karen Cheng said: “White Sands has always been a part of our lives. With parts of the mall unveiling gradually, it’s exciting to catch glimpses of so many new brands.” You’ve heard it! With most of the shops already up-and-running, explore White Sands today. We guarantee you will be in for a sweet surprise. 1 Pasir Ris Central Street 3, Singapore 518457 Website: whitesands.com.sg | Tel: 6585 0606 “There are so many new shops and I’ve yet to explore the whole mall! The viewers, many dressed up in costumes depicting a variety of characters, were here for the Punggol Seas Halloween cum outdoor movie screening party. The evening began with activities like face painting, maskmaking and balloon sculpting, all whilst admiring each others’ costumes. Miniature mummies, Draculas and fairies roamed the compound and took pictures with the props around the school; and when dusk came, they settled down for the show. After the movie, the winners for the “Best Dressed” competition were unveiled and the kids proudly posed for the cameras one last time before heading home with a framed certificate. Spotting only giant red ants the last time, we weren’t certain if we’d see any more than we did. Under the nature lovers’ lead (and really sharp eyes), snakes, owls and all sorts of lovely bugs suddenly became visible. During the walk, they talk about why the mangrove is special and how this swampy beauty in Pasir Ris can be conserved. Monito Sumi Sankar r lizard Hi Sankar, hello Sumi! Tell us about the Naked Hermit Crabs and your role as Crabs (i.e. volunteer guide)? The Naked Hermit Crabs are a group of volunteer guides who conduct free guided treks at Singapore’s shores such as Chek Jawa, Pulau Semakau, Kusu Island. We also organise nature walks at the Pasir Ris mangroves frequently. We share about our shores through these walks as people might not know what to look out for when they go there on their own. What are some common misconceptions about our local mangroves? They think that everything’s dead and there’s nothing to see. But the mangrove is a special ecosystem and much more special than it is given credit for. It’s a place full of life and some of the wildlife here can be found nowhere else in the world. We should be patriotic about it because these are Singaporean animals and they’re as Singaporean as you and me. The other misconception is that these forests have no value. A lot of these plants are actually used for medicine and many of them have yet to be studied. Who knows the cure for AIDs and cancer could be sitting in our very own backyard? What are residents usually most surprised to learn on the treks? Many residents have lived here for a long time but have never visited the Pasir Ris Mangrove. When they come here, they’re surprised to find animals because many don’t associate biodiversity with Singapore. When they see nature (i.e. spotting crabs and large birds) happening in front of them, they’re amazed. And being Singaporeans, the first thing they ask is “this one can eat or not?” People usually associate illegal hunting with larger animals like tigers or whales. Are there any forms of poaching that goes on within these mangroves? Illegal fishing is one problem. People will tie crab traps with pieces of chicken in it to the boardwalk. If we encounter the traps, we’ll remove them because it might accidentally catch other wildlife like a monitor lizard that’s swimming through. Very recently, we encountered a group of young poachers – a bunch of local teenagers – who jumped in to catch a snake. They played with it, tossed it around and later threw it back in. The snake died after that. 12 vibes Shore pit viper Hearttoheart the Mangrove Other than poaching, what other things do people do unknowingly that’s hurting the ecosystem? There’s always the issue of marine trash. A lot of the trash we see in the mangroves isn’t actually caused by littering. Most of it is washed in by the tide. What’s done outside of these mangroves and outside of Singapore has an impact, so it’s something everyone should know. Another problem is that people illegally release animals that are not supposed to be inside the ecosystem. Those terrapins people buy as pets are the most common, or during Vesak Day when people “mercy” release loads of fish that don’t belong in these waters. 90% of them die as a result. Furthermore, they out-compete local species and do a lot of damage to the ecosystem. Bug’s life Your outreach efforts are mainly to families and the kids. Is it better to cultivate the awareness at a young age? Yes, it’s definitely better to start young before kids become out of tune with nature. While I don’t think it’s a “lost cause” to start later, it’s an advantage to gain awareness when they’re younger because the children will grow to develop a sense of ownership for the environment. Indirectly, it creates value for the ecosystem. Years down the road, they’ll remember the good times they’ve had at the mangroves and remember that this is a place they must protect if they want their own kids to have the same kind of fun they’ve had. Grey Heron To those who argue that because of land scarcity, these habitats should be reclaimed for more practical stuff like roads and buildings. What are your thoughts? Realistically speaking, this place is not a nature reserve, so any time when it’s convenient or necessary, it can get torn down or come under threat. There’s always the same constant fear of it being cleared. When that happens, all the animals and living creatures will lose their homes. It’s entirely possible that this scenario could happen so we’re raising awareness on this and lobbying to preserve this habitat for them. What’s the value behind protecting the mangroves and how can regular people like us do our part? Other than it being the home of many species of wildlife, the mangroves is a place where people can learn, relax and enjoy with their loved ones. Studies have also shown that being close to nature helps with the overall health and well-being. If you want to help preserve the mangroves, you can take ownership by writing in to the newspapers or National Parks. If you’ve enjoyed your time there, simply take a few moments to share your reflections or blog about them. It’s one of the best ways to give the mangroves a voice as the positive feedback generates positive value for them. Keen to join the Naked Hermit Crabs on a free guided tour? For Fuzzball*, it’s all about Star Wars. The longtime fan recently straightened up his memorabilia in anticipation of the franchise’s seventh installation. The Pasir Ris resident shares what it’s like growing up with the movies, and how at 45, he’s really still a boy at heart who geeks out over fiction. On a scale of 1-10, how obsessed are you with Star Wars? I’m not “obsessed” like that couple who got married in the Star Wars costume and gear, but I do like the franchise a lot. I’d say 7 out of 10. How many times have you watched the movies? I have truly lost count. I had the first trilogy recorded on video tapes and would watch them in my younger school days all the way through university and into my earlier days of work until the second trilogy was complete. I’m going to watch Episodes 1 to 6 with my kid during the school holidays in the lead up to the premiere of Episode 7. How are you preparing for the highly anticipated movie release this December? With a lot of curiosity and abated breath. Episode 7 is set post-Vader and the Emperor. The trailers that have been released doesn’t show much of Luke and one wonders what has transpired for the Jedi after all this time. I have my own suspicions regarding the mysterious character that idolises Vader in the trailer but we shall see. Does that obsession spill over into any other parts of your life? Not always. Although, there was once I wore my Sith costume to the premiere of Revenge of the Sith but that was 10 years ago. These days, I’m happy to soak up the atmosphere together with my kid and watch the younger fans dress up and enjoy themselves. Do people make fun of your love for Star Wars? Not at all but I do get some nifty gifts from friends like the silicone death star ice. It goes very well with my Scotch whisky. It’s as if I can feel the Force sipping the whisky. Have you ever fantasized about being one of the characters? Yes, Luke Skywalker. Because who doesn’t want to fly the X-Wing, fight bad guys with a light sabre, jump to light speed with R2, bring down the mighty ATAT, ride the speeder bike in Endor, train with Yoda and feel the Force through the midi-chlorians in cells of their body? Do you think you’ll get over Star Wars one day? No, I wouldn’t want to and I believe the fantasy lives on inside every fan even though it does not show on the outside. Organised by the Pasir Ris West Community Arts and Culture Clubs and the National Arts Council, the event was part of the Silver Arts initiative that works to provide opportunities for seniors to enjoy the arts. Read on to find out Ms Sun’s take on this popular quote that is often seen, but barely understood. LIVE LAUGH “Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live” - Norman Cousins I have found that having a sense of humour is a good buffer against life’s upsets. Our lives are made up of a summation of all the moments we have lived. But the amazing thing about life is that you never know what is going to happen next. So savour each moment. Tell your loved ones that you love them. Kiss and hug your children while you are still the entire world in their eyes. Since we are unable to dictate what life throws us, I choose to exercise control over how I want to react, by choosing joy over anger and laughter over tears. As I say that, my own two-year-old daughter teaches me so much about life. She approaches everyday with such enthusiasm.Everything that she encounters is like magic has just happened! From her, I am learning to imbue that sense of wonder into how I live my life. I am trying out a new trick (you can try it too). Whenever I am upset, I think of a penguin. A fat fluffy one which sways from side to side, then slips and falls on the ice, and eventually glides into the water on its belly. It is impossible to be upset and think of a penguin at the same time! LOVE Love is … wondering if he thinks about you as often as you think about him …holding on to his last words even as his voice fades away … knowing he does not say much but he will be there come what may Love is … wiping away the tears from your child’s face and saying mummy is here … laughing as your child laughs, at the smallest of things, because you just love the way she looks … telling your child that mummy will love her till the end of time Love is … watching your parents grow older and remembering how they were when you were much younger … remembering looking up at your dad when you were only thigh-high tall … remembering the smell of your favourite dish, just the way your mum cooked it Love is simple, not grand not showy. I was brought up by my grandmother and I remember how she made me a cup of Horlicks every morning. She could not walk very well as she had pain in her knees. She would make a very full cup of Horlicks and try very hard to balance the cup of Horlicks on a saucer as she hobbled towards me. Often, the cup would be hot and sticky by the time it reached me and I was not fond of drinking it. I did not know then that that was what love was about… that it actually translates to these little gestures that make up our lives. TO OUR GRC Now that the dust has settled after the General Elections 2015, a few changes have taken place within Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. Standing in the SpanishColonial-designed lobby of The Hollywood Roosevelt, I pinched myself. Ouch. Yes, I’m in Los Angeles. Yes, I’m in Hollywood Boulevard. Yes, I’m in THE landmark hotel which hosted the first ever Academy Awards in 1929, and where Marilyn Monroe lived for two years during her modelling years! Yes, I’m almost obsessed with Hollywood and the old Hollywood charm. With that, my recent trip to Los Angeles had three main agendas. Firstly, stay at the oldest and most iconic hotel in Hollywood and debunk all rumours of it being haunted. The Hollywood Roosevelt was built in 1927 and located smack in the middle of Hollywood Boulevard. Other than the fact that it has great location and wonderful service, I wanted to stay there to experience the vintage Hollywood charm. The make and architecture of the hotel, the rooms and even its pool still shout ‘Great Gatsby’. The hotel exudes an unmistakable sensuality that you have to experience for yourself. Secondly, hunt for Pretty Woman (the movie) filming locations. From the majestic Beverly Wilshire (mentioned as Ritz in the movie) to Rodeo Drive where Julia Roberts got chased away, to the Walk of Fame spot where she met Richard Gere, to the dingy apartment she stayed in… I did it all. Crazy? Maybe. But it’s a road less travelled and it was priceless. Thirdly, spot a celebrity. It isn’t as easy as it sounds. I caught sight of Kat Dennings from 500m away at Warner Bro Studios. I thought I saw Kenny Rodgers driving a convertible but my husband said I was seeing things. But hey, I spotted Reese Witherspoon… ……’s bag of candies at Rodeo Drive! She left them at the candy store’s counter for her assistant to pick up. Well, it’s definitely better than nothing! Asante-sana! (Thank you!) Just like many other heritage hotels around the world, The Hollywood Roosevelt is plagued with rumours of it being haunted. Word has it that Marilyn Monroe’s ghost haunts the famed hotel. Actually, I wouldn’t mind at all if Marilyn visited me in my cabana pool-side room. I would even invite her for a smoke or two! Alas, I waited four nights and no ghost came. In fact, other occupants I spoke to agreed that the rumours are nonsensical. Quiz?
