Music brings people together. This popular saying was again tested and
proven right at the recent Music in the Mall event organised by Pasir Ris
West Community Arts and Culture Club. Hosted by the newly renovated
White Sands Shopping Mall, the Valentine’s Day-themed event was a musical
extravaganza with a romantic twist. The dreamy afternoon had local acts
like the SINGlobal band, The Music Talents and the A-List band enamouring
the crowd with their performances. Celebrity music couple Alfred and Kewei
(they represented Singapore in a Chinese reality TV singing contest) was also
there to belt out a couple of songs and share how cupid struck both of them.
Just when things were starting to get predictable, a flash mob segment
broke out and surprised shoppers with a dance and mass rose-giving
session. Was there love in the air? We sure like to think so!

UPGRADING YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD
Residents of Blocks 440-461 Pasir Ris Drive 4-6 got to see the proposed improvements to their precinct
at the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) public consultation in February. The session hoped
to gather feedback from the residents, and if feasible, those feedback will be incorporated into the
design proposal for the next phase of the NRP - the Consensus Gathering Exercise. More than 150
residents came by to understand more about the improvement works and actively participated in the
discussion, with many excited to know that their living environment will soon be upgraded with better
amenities. Ms Poh, a resident, shared what she was looking forward to the most: “The Seashell Park
improvement is good. I hope it wouldn’t be taken away in the future because we need that place for
exercising and relaxing.” While the adults busied themselves with the exhibition panels, the children
did some art and also enjoyed live music performance by band Jelly Days.

To get to know the residents better, Mr Ng Chee Meng has been doing steadfast block visits
around Punggol North since the start of the year. Covering more than 60 blocks so far, these
visits allow residents to interact with Mr Ng at the comforts of their own homes. “I’m happy
to know that many of the residents know their neighbours,” said Mr Ng. “It’s important to
keep the kampong spirit alive and be there for one another.” Through the visits, he was also
heartened to learn that more residents are doing their part for the community by becoming
volunteers, and hope more will come forward to do the same.

Punggol Coast Community Sports Club (CSC) launched its first Running Interest
Group on 3 January 2016. A typically solo activity, the interest group allows residents
to turn running into a social sport – one which lets them keep fit and make new
friends at the same time. On the day of the launch, Dr Janil Puthucheary led the first
run and joined 50 residents on a 5km course around Punggol Water Park. The fresh
morning air and tranquil environment accompanied the runners as they completed
their route in almost no time. Other than Punggol Waterway Park, the interest group
will provide runners staying in Punggol a chance to explore other locations such as
Punggol Settlement and Coney Island to keep the running experience fresh.

Mosque Tour
@ Masjid Al Islah
Some 40 residents joined DPM Teo and Ms Sun Xueling at Masjid Al Islah’s first organised tour
aimed at promoting greater understanding of the Islamic faith. Opened in June 2015 last year, this
is one of the ways the mosque is helping residents of other beliefs gain a better insight into ways of
their religion. During the guided tour, topics such as why its congregants have to pray at a certain
direction were brought up. Ms Sun said the mosque’s disposition towards interaction and open
communication with the neighbourhood has allowed for compromise to take place. For example
when the mosque opened last year, some residents had aired concerns about traffic congestion
and the volume of prayers. In response to their feedback, Masjid Al Islah made an effort to direct
congregants to alternative parking spaces, and also used fewer speakers for prayers.

These seven athletes are much like you and I. We’ve all got our own cracks to mend, demons to conquer, challenges
to overcome – the only difference is that they’re doing it in the public eye. We talk to them about sports, about
their lives and what life is like beyond the games.
Nur Syahidah Bte Alim (Archery)
Syahidah’s Next Big Goal
My team and I are preparing for a championship at the Czech Republic this June. We hope to qualify and
continue to represent Singapore for the Rio Paralympics 2016.
A True Blue Pasir Ris Girl
I’ve been living in Pasir Ris with my family for over 20 years. I love Pasir Ris. It’s a quaint little place to live in.
One of the highlights of my growing up years was spending time with my friends during the holidays.
We’d do things like play at the playgrounds or take care of kittens under the blocks.
Her Role Model
In my career at Sport Singapore, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with Mr. C. Kunalan,
Singapore’s ex-national athlete in athletics. As a work colleague, I learnt more about his glory days
and heard from him stories about fellow local pioneer athletes.
He inspires me to be a better sportsperson – to excel in sport, be humble on achievements,
to always remember my roots, and be the voice for inclusiveness in sports.
Greatest Achievement To Date (That Isn’t Sports Related!)
It has to be when I completed my dissertation and graduated with a
Master’s degree at Nanyang Technological University.
Nurulasyiqah Bte Mohd Taha (Boccia)
“Excuse me, aren’t you…?”
People do stop me on the streets. After the games, people
occasionally come up to me to confirm if it was my face that
was plastered on SBS Service No. 12. They also thank me
for representing Singapore or to say they’re proud of me.
Fortunately no one has asked for a photo with me yet!
A Lover of Languages
I’m an accidental polyglot. I attended Korean classes for
three years so that I can converse with the top Boccia players
who are from Korea. I’ve also been attending Japanese
classes for over a year now.
Bobby Lee (Badminton)
My Hidden Talent is…
I can recognise footsteps of the people I know. It’s probably
a compensating skill since I can’t turn my head or wheelchair
quickly enough to face someone behind me.
Part Time Athlete, Full Time Boss
I’m not a full time sportsperson due to work commitments. I’m actually a
self-employed electrical contractor by trade. I manage my own company
with my wife’s help, and have about 25 staff. Some of them have worked
with us for quite long and because of their help, I was able to fully
concentrate on my training for the Para Games.
On her two-dimensional persona as the “disabled
athlete”
It’s good enough for me if people know me as a para-athlete
because after all that is my public persona. I only hope that
they attach the same adjectives to para-athletes like they do
to all athletes – driven; committed; resilient.

Life after the Games
We continue training as usual, but it’s not as frequent as before the game.
I still play on most weekdays with my kakis though.
It Runs in the Family
My daughter also has an interest in badminton and I was really happy to
learn she was picked for the school team.

Overcoming the Impossible
Running was the last thing I imagined possible after my amputation. I’m really happy that I’m able to run now and feel there’s still
much room for improvement. Nothing is impossible as long you believe and work at it.
Biggest Takeaway from the Games
The games have created more awareness, which makes me feel more included. I usually train in heartland areas and even though I still
attract plenty of glares and stares, I do feel more accepted.
Do you see yourself as an inspiration or has the media hyped that up?
It’s quite overrated really. I see myself as just another man on the streets, leading a normal life even after the amputation. I’m still able
to have a career, to build a family, to drive and to travel – I’m happy with the way things are now.
Family Comes First
My family is without doubt my most precious asset and proudest achievement. I was the happiest when I became a father and my
favourite thing to do other than sports is parenting.
Jovin Tan (Sailing)
Sailing & Me
Sailing was introduced to me in 2001. I’d say I enjoy the sport
competitively more so than leisurely. Sailing has not only
helped with my confidence level, it has taught me many life
lessons and has improved my physical form as well.
On the underlying notion that disabled athletes are
somewhat “lesser than” able-bodied athletes
We may be slower in our physical condition but that doesn’t
mean we aren’t as competitive as the able-bodied athletes.
More awareness is necessary to help the public understand
more about disabled sports and sports without boundaries.
Best Moment of the Para Games
When I received the gold medal for my country, in my country,
and in front of my family and friends.
Benson Tan (Swimming)
My Growing Up Years
I was extremely hyperactive. My parents had to run after me
when we were out shopping. They had a hard time looking for
me because I always hid inside the clothing racks. In school, I
disrupted classes and once jumped from the stage and received
three stitches on my forehead. It was one of the reasons why my
parents decided to channel my energy into sports.
Chew Zi Ling (Swimming)
On Being Spotted in Public
I feel like a regular person but people have come up to me and said
that I’ve inspired them. This makes me really happy and it makes me
want to work even harder!
Greatest Achievement To Date (That Isn’t Sports Related!)
My greatest achievement to date is that I have completed my two
years traineeship with ITE specialising in Hospitality.
My Happiest Moment Was…
When I was selected to represent Singapore at the 2nd Asian Para
Games in Incheon, South Korea. My current aim is to qualify for the 3rd
Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Swimming Changed My Life
I chose swimming because I had asthma back then and the sport
helped improve my health conditions. I’m also diagnosed with
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); swimming calms
me down and helps me focus.
I Look Up To…
Joseph Schooling. His achievements come from the effort he puts
in.
Aftermath of the Para Games
When the dust settles, this group of disabled athletes may be
forgotten. But the games have opened doors for disabled athletes
to prove themselves; to show how determined the community
can be in order to achieve their goals.
Of Other Interests & Passions
I’m able to speak a little bit of German. I also love DJ-ing and Music
Producing.

Teaching art from his humble abode in Pasir Ris, 26-year-old Lai Yao Khuan breaks the myth of a starving artist.
Find out how he turned his talent and passion for fine arts into a career.
Hi Yao Khuan, describe what you do for a living.
I teach private art lessons from home and I paint commissioned
artworks. On days when I’m not teaching art, I participate in art
exhibitions under Utterly Art Gallery.
There’s a popular venn diagram that depicts “Passion, Talent,
Money”. Would you say you’re currently right in the middle of
all three?
I’ve only been teaching art since June last year, and I believe that
there’s still a long way to go with many more areas to expand. But
it has certainly been a very fulfilling and enjoyable journey thus
far! I hope that what I do will grow and bring greater appreciation
to the world of art. It feels wonderful to be able to bring value to
others, helping them improve and rekindle the passion they have
for the arts.
From your experience, it looks like it is entirely possible to
make a living as an artist. How did this whole “art tutor-slashart commissioner” idea originate?
I was looking for ways to bring value to the world with art, and
besides commissioned pieces, the other natural way was to help
people interested in art to get better at art - by imparting skills to
them.
You graduated from NTU with a Degree in Art, Design and
Media majoring in Animation. Why didn’t you pursue a
career in that direction and keep fine arts as just a hobby?
After three years of Animation, I realised that perhaps it wasn’t
what I was truly passionate
about and I had to be honest
with myself. During those
years I had the opportunity
to participate in the annual
Affordable Art Fair where the
works that I submitted were sold.
It gave me the courage I lacked
to pursue my passion in fine arts.
14 vibes
Why did you transform your home into your teaching studio?
When I first started, I was travelling to students’ homes and it was
really taxing; furthermore I didn’t have access to my art supplies at
home. So I decided to use my home as a teaching studio instead,
that way I can share my favorite art materials with my students.
Does the home setting bring a different experience to
teaching and learning art?
I try to make my lessons casual; that they’re learning from a friend
rather than a teacher. My aim is to share what I know with them so
I felt the setting is not as important. That being said, I’m constantly
on a lookout for a more comfortable learning environment for my
students.
Well we think learning from home is a great idea! What did
your parents have to say about strangers entering and leaving
their house constantly?
It was a little awkward at first having strangers into the house
but after several students later, things were better and I’m really
grateful to have such supportive parents. I do inform them
beforehand so that they’ll know when a new student is coming
over.

FLYING HIGH TOGETHER
Valentine’s Day may be over, but Member of Parliament (MP)
Mr Ng Chee Meng reckons love should be celebrated every
day, no matter how simple.
That picture with your wife, Michelle, together
with a rainbow and fighter plane in the
background, certainly caught everyone’s
attention. Was it spontaneous? What was going
through your mind at that moment?
The photo was absolutely spontaneous; I
wouldn’t know how to stage a rainbow!
Lots were going through my mind - I will miss this, I am
thankful for the experiences, and I am grateful for the support my wife has
given me. I thought: “What a wonderful way to conclude my final flight after all
these years since I began flying at 17!”
When I landed the plane, Michelle was there to receive me and at the same
time, a beautiful rainbow appeared. It was priceless and truly memorable.
How did you meet your wife? Do you remember your first impressions of
each other?
We met when we were 15 years old through a lifeguard course organised by
The National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC). We found each other pleasant, easy
going and got along well as friends. I think I was more impressed by her than
her by me. We only started dating after university many years later.
What is the most romantic thing you’ve done for Michelle?
For Michelle’s 40th birthday, I surprised her with get-a-way to a nearby country
with the help of my sister in-law. It was planned in secret and I got my kids to
play along. She didn’t believe me when I asked her to pack her bags and said
we’re leaving for an early flight the next morning. I think she was shocked - she
couldn’t sleep after that!
You both have been married for a long time. What does it take to keep the
love alive?
Understand that love isn’t just a feeling, but a commitment to cherish each
other through the ups and downs of life.
We always make time for each other no matter how busy. We try to have
breakfast together as that’s the only meal I have most control over. We make an
effort to share our thoughts with each other.
If I told her I’ll be back for dinner, she’ll wait to eat with me no matter how late I
get back. No matter how late I end my day, she will always stay up and wait for
me. We try to start and end the day together. That’s romance for me.

Terbang tinggi bersama
tirai penerbangan terakhir saya selepas sekian lama, sejak saya mulakan
Bagaimana anda bertemu isteri anda? Adakah anda masih ingat
tanggapan pertama anda berdua?
Kami bertemu ketika kami berusia 15 tahun melalui kursus penyelamat anjuran
Kor Kadet Polis Kebangsaan (NPCC). Kami dapati perwatakan satu sama lain
universiti beberapa tahun kemudian.

Two Sides to Taipei
Ng Khuan Kung
Many people travel, but how many of us have truly experienced
living the life of a local when we’re overseas? This is a personal
endeavour, to (try to) live like a local whenever I’m in a foreign land.
Get out of your comfort zone, resist taking cabs and travel via buses,
get to know how the system works. Ditch the five-star hotels and
sleep in a local’s apartment. With Airbnb and hostels available, you
not only get to save some money, but also have an entirely different
travel experience.
I did that for my recent trip to Taipei - rented a room away from
the city (in Jingmei景美), ditched the tourist spots (except for
Ximending and Taipei 101) and shopped at the local markets. For
starters, ignore the free breakfast provided if you’re staying in a
hotel and try some savoury crepes (蛋饼) available at “breakfast
outlets” (早餐店) for breakfast. Grab a takeaway Citycafe Latte at
the convenience stores, or even the famed Stinky Tofu (臭豆腐)
for lunch. For hidden gems, head up to Yangmingshan’s (阳明山)
restaurants to get a spectacular view of Taipei. They’re an hour’s bus
ride away from the breezy Jiantan Station (劍潭), where the Shilin
Night Market (士林夜市) is located!
If you’re up for a challenge, climb the steps up Xiangshan (象山) for
a breathtaking view of the Taipei 101. It was tough going up the
mountain but I assure you that the view would be worth it! Do take
note as the sun sets around 530pm during the cold season and it
would take you roughly 30 minutes to reach the peak, and another
30 minutes down. It would be advisable to time yourself properly to
catch the sunset over the Taipei 101!
And if you’re keen to escape the city life, head north towards New
Taipei City, right to Jinshan District’s (金山) famous hot springs. The
main area where hot spring resorts and hotels converge is a mere
15-minute walk, or a bus stop away from the city center. Life in Taipei
is fabulous as you’re able to experience the best of both worlds, from
urbanised city life to a slower paced rural landscape within Taipei’s
borders.
