More than a Century of distillation using the artisanal distillation
www.grappanonino.it “...Through uncounted decades, grappa was little more than a cheap, portable form of central heating for peasants in northern Italy... Fancier Italians, and most foreigners, disdained it. But that was before the Noninos of Percoto came to prominence...” R.W. Apple Jr., The New York Times December 31st, 1997 foto M. Piazza foto O. Toscani 1989 More than a Century of distillation using the artisanal distillation method The Nonino family has devoted itself to the art of distillation since 1897. 1973 - 2013 Forty years ago the Noninos created Grappa Monovitigno® Nonino and turned grappa from Cinderella into a Queen of distillates! The success was so great that Italian and foreign distillers felt compelled to follow the Nonino model. 1st December, 1973 Benito and Giannola Nonino revolutionize the method of producing, introducing and packaging Grappa in Italy and throughout the world. They create the single varietal Grappa, Monovitigno® Nonino, by distilling the pomace of the Picolit grape on its own. 29th November, 1975 they found the Nonino Prize to highlight the constant relevance of Rustic Civilization. 27th November, 1984 the Noninos mark a new turning point. They distill the whole grape and create the Grape Distillate: ÙE®. Ministerial authorization for the production of Grape Distillate (D.M. 20.10.84) is granted following a specific request by the Noninos after overcoming all sorts of bureaucratic and category-related obstacles. www.grappanonino.it - 33050 Percoto / Udine / Italia, tel. +39 0432 676331, fax +39 0432 676038 YEARS www.grappanonino.it 15th November, 1989 The Noninos plant in Buttrio - Friuli - 40 hectares of experimental vineyard with Picolit, Ribolla Gialla, Fragolino, Schioppettino and Pignolo grapes. These grapes would be used to produce Grappa and ÙE®, grape Distillate, of unmatched quality and characteristics. 2nd June, 1998 Giannola Nonino is appointed Cavaliere del Lavoro. 3rd April, 2000 after years of research into honey, considered to be a natural miracle in ancient times, Cristina, Antonella and Elisabetta Nonino, introduce GIOIELLO®, the distillate of ‘Purity’ which is obtained from the distillation of pure honey. 4th December, 2003 the President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, awards Giannola and Benito Nonino the prestigious Leonardo Prize for Italian Quality for “the absolute quality level, research and innovation… The Noninos are considered the true ambassadors for Italian Grappa throughout the world”. 3rd March, 2010 in occasion of the first Ultimate Spirits Challenge, held in New York, competing with over 520 distillates from 42 countries, Grappa Nonino Monovitigno® il Merlot wins the Chairman’s Trophy, the most important acknowledgement of the category World Brandy, Grappa & Grape Distillate. foto J.
