about the rowdy fraternities,
beautiful women in sororities,
nationally acclaimed athletics

flurries of celebrities, and the
traditional college town scene,
but who really wants to hear
about that instead of academics?
Exactly. Ole Miss offers many of

On a glorious, icy Saturday
night, the sophomores hosted the
annual winter formal with the theme,
“Under the Big Top” at the Humboldt
Country Club. A couple weeks prior
to the event, many students believed
formal would suck because of the
theme and seemed to underestimate
the sophomores a bit. However,
formal ended up being more sucessful
than many thought. All classes
actually showed up, and many of the
students brought guests. Something
different that the sophomores did this
year was a gift card drawing and door
prizes for “Best Dressed” and winner
of the dance competition.

Play to Win
By Nick Merwin
Missing Journalist
Last week, with
playoff seeding on the
line, the girls basketball
teams from Riverdale
and Smyrna faced off.
The winner would play
against Tullahoma, the
8th ranked team in
Tennessee, and the loser would face a more inferior
team. Both teams decided to take the low road by
trying to lose on purpose. The ref reported that
Riverdale “missed 12-16 free throws intentionally”,
and that Smyrna “wouldn’t get the ball across the halfcourt line to get a 10-second count or to make us call
an over and back violation intentionally”. At one point
one of the players tried to score on their own basket,
when the refs stopped the game and told the coaches
that it was unacceptable. In return, the TSSAA banned
both teams from the post season, ending the dreams
of both teams. As former NFL coach once said in
regards to losing one purpose, “You play to win the
game”. This is what may happen if you choose not to
play to win.

His whereabouts are
unknown and he was
most likely kidnapped

However, we received
a video in 2012 of Tice
blindfolded with his
hands bound while he
was being led up a rocky
hillside by a group of
very heavily armed men.
The men were chanting
in Arabic, “God is
great.” Tice then recites
a prayer on Arabic then
in a shaken distressed,
“Oh Jesus, oh Jesus.”
Nobody knows for

Boris Nemtsov,
a very liberal and

in strong opposition to

ISIL Threatens Itay
By Gabriel Garneau
ISIL has recently made
threats to Italy, as well as the
Vatican City. This was preceded
by the merciless beheading of 21
Christians. The Islamic State has
also been producing propaganda
that depicts their flag atop the
obelisk in St. Peter’s Square. In
response to this, Italian officials
have stated that there are far
greater concerns then terrorist
groups. The concerns specifically
mentioned include: Russian
President Vladimir Putin, the
Greek debt crisis, and economic
growth. Even the Italian civilians
are not disheartened, and
make humor of the situation
through the hash tag “#We_are_
coming_o_Rome.”
The Islamic State continues
to grow as a threat in the world
theater. If they do attack Italy,
specifically Rome, I believe that
various European countries will
join in the defense against the
Islamic State. They have already
proven themselves a threat, but
through further demonstration of
terror, they pull more countries,
and more individuals into the
conflict. With all of this violence,
and terror, one can beg the
question. Why? What does this
group have to gain in striking fear
into the lives of innocent people.
If this sense of power, out of fear

stricken in others is what
feeds them, then perhaps the
Italian civilians have made
the right approach. Through
not giving the Islamic State
the power of terror, they are
winning the psychological
battle.

The End
By Ben Graham
When our basketball
season officially ended,
it felt as if my life had
stopped. My head felt
light, my body felt numb,
and the only thoughts I
had were memories of the
game that we had just
lost, an instant re-playby play on repeat. But
looking beyond my own
thoughts, I realized that
the world had not stopped
turning. Life had moved
on without me, with
everyone else having
things to do and places to
be. This realization could
have caused two reactions
from me: either
a burning desire to fight
ahead and conquer
the world that was so
arrogantly eager to
leave me behind, or I
would feel so tired from
my prolonged effort
throughout not only
this last season but the
two seasons and three
preseasons before it that
I would take a leave from
effort itself for the next
two days in an attempt
to rest in preparation for
the hardest offseason of
my life.
The length of this article
should proof of the
reaction I chose.

winter formal ended up
being a great turn out.
Shoutout to the sophomores, sponsors, parents, and teachers for

Rest and Relaxation
By Grace Lemons
Let’s just take a moment to remember last week in all its glory. It was a
precious week of forced relaxation and nothing to stress about, perfect
for staying up until 3am every night finishing a Netflix series. However,
reality hit hard Monday. All of the stress and exhaustion is returning to
our straining bodies and clouding our minds with excessive thoughts of
insignificant details. I’m taking ten Ibuprofen and drinking three cups
of tea a day just to stay alive. It seems like no matter how much time we
get off of school, we will always be playing catch up. Yet, there is hope!
These are a few simple ways to relax our minds and bodies and enjoy
an ample amount of sleep at night.
1. Begin winding down your mind and body an hour before you go to
bed so you don’t have to try and “shut down” right before you get in
bed.
2. Take a warm shower or bath at night. That way, your body
temperature will lower when you get out, causing you to become more
tired.
3. Wear socks to bed. Keeping a cool core and warm extremities
optimizes your temperature for sleep.
4. Use the 4-7-8 exercise: inhale for four seconds, hold your breath for
seven, and exhale for eight. This will lower your heart rate and blood
pressure, which are both linked to sleepiness.
5. Don’t get into bed until you are actually tired. You should try to train
your brain to associate your bed with sleepiness. Quality over quantity
when it comes to sleep.
6. Practice calming techniques during the day when you’re not anxious
to sleep. You can use apps such as Dreaming with Jeff and iSleep Easy.
7. If you are not feeling tired, get out of bed and do something
productive until you feel tired. Again, try to associate your bed with
sleepiness.
8. Hide your clock. Continuously checking the clock or your phone will
make you stressed or anxious.
9. Write your revolving thoughts down on paper. That way, they will
be out of your mind so that you can relax. Writing your to-do list for
tomorrow is an efficient way to de-clutter your mind.

Girl of My Dreams
By Jack Richardson
Bella Thorne is the
greatest human being on the
face of the planet. She was
born on October 8, 1997
in Pembroke Pines, Florida
to Tamara and Delancey
Reinaldo “Rey” Thorne.
She is the youngest of four
children and began her career
in entertainment as a child
model. Her first major role in
a T.V. show was “Dirty Sexy
Money” and in “My Own
Worst Enemy.”
Most of you know her
from when she starred on
the Disney Channel show
“Shake it Up.” In this show,
she played a dancer known
as CeCe Jones who was the
comic relief on the show.
Now, she has moved on to
bigger and better things such
as starring in “Blended” and
“The Duff ” which is currently
in theaters. Along with her
movie and television career,
she is also a musical artist
and enjoys expressing herself
through her music with “Call
it Whatever.” Finally, “Autumn
Falls” is her first novel which
has achieved much success for
a novel written by a seventeen
year old.
The final factor of Bella
Thorne that makes her the
best person ever is that one of
her hobbies is soccer. That is a
multi-faceted person if I have
ever seen one. Not only is she
an actor, singer, and author, but
she is also tremendous athlete.
The ultimate dime, Bella
Thorne.

Boots with the Fur

Texture is in
style and the perfect
way to show that
off is fur. Faux fur
is trending because
it is cheaper than
real fur and more
humane for the
animal lovers.
There’s several
different looks
to pair with a fur
accessory and the
perfect way to learn
how to wear it, is
keeping up with
street style. Several
celebrities have seen
sporting faux fur
on the street. Kim
Kardashian has
been seen more
than once with
fur. Kate Moss
and Rihanna also
love the fur look.

The Webster Dictionary
defines Istanbul, Turkey as “city NW
Turkey on the Bosphorus and Sea
of Marmara”. However the MerrianWebster dictionary does not do this
breathtaking city justice. Over 7.5
million people visit Istanbul every
year. And for good reason. Istanbul
has many attractions including the
Topkapi Palace, the Ayasofya, and the
Sultanahmet Mosque. But for those
who enjoy shopping over anything
else the Grand Bazaar has over 61
cover streets and over 3,000 shops,
and attracts anywhere from 250,000
to 400,000 people daily.
Similar to Tatooine the Topkapi
Palace utilizes Ottoman Archetecture.
Starting in 1460, the construction
of the Topkapi Palace took 18 years.
700,000 squaremeters made up this
15th century giant. And for over
400 years after its construction the
Topkapi Palace was used as the main
administrative, educational and art
center. But in he 19th century was
replaced by the Dolmabhce Palace.
Ayasofya was one of the
greatest churches built by the
Christian emperor Constantine the
Great. Taking only 5 years to build
Ayasofya was one of the greatest
suviving examples of Byzantine
archetecture, rich with mosaics,
marble pillars, and coverings. And
since the 12th century the temple has
been raided, plundered, desicrated,
and subject to natural disasters. And
after being rebuilt and restored many
times, now stands erect in south
eastern Istanbul, Turkey.
Right across the Sultanahmet
Square from the Ayasofya is the
Sultanahmet Mosque. This particular
mosque has become a major tourist
attraction due to its history, beauty,
and location. The Sultanahmet
Mosque is a specific type of mosque
called a blue mosque, due to the
blue coloring of the tiles adorning
the walls of its interior. Over 7 years
the mosque was built as a rivel to
the Ayasofya. An interesting stroy
about the Sultanahmet Mosque is that
when is was being built the architect,
Mahmet Aga, misunderstood the
sultan concerning the minaret.
Mahmet Aga thought the sultan had
meant to make 6 minarets instead of
a gold one, because the English word
for 6 was Alti and the Turkish word for
gold is Altin. So the architect instead
of building a gold minaret, he built 6
minarets.
But for those of who enjoy
shopping and/or eating more that
visiting these historical cites, Istanbul
is home to the Grand Bazaar. The
Grand Bazaar has been a staple
in many peoples visit to Istanbul,
Turkey. This destination will not let
you down. So visit Istanbul, Turkey
today!
The Great Bazaar
Every year the Grand Bazaar has
over 143 million visitors. That is over
20 times the amount of tourists that
Istanbul has every year. The Bazaar
is one of the biggest cover markets in
the world with over 61 cover streets
and over 3,000 shops which attract
anywhere from 250,000 to 400,000
people daily. It is very diverse and can
practically supply any item available.
Many of the products are hand made
by the vendors. But not only does this
Bazaar supply you with every day needs
and/or souvenirs to take home from
your adventure to Istanbul, but the
Grand Bazaar gives each visitor a feeling
of awe and wonder to his or her visit.

Knight’s Soccer Sets Sights High
By Michael Saia
Only last year current SHJHS Soccer
Coach Chris Harrington was able to
get his United States Visa renewed
and was able to begin coaching the
SHJ Men’s Soccer Team. And as
most players of Coach Harrington
can tell you, he will immediately
begin to push you toward your limit
as a player as soon as the state
of Tennessee allows. Each season
begins with more than a month of
early 5:45 morning conditioning
practices during the month of
January. During this time the ball
is never touched and players long
for a time when they can begin to
play the sport for which they are
training. These grueling sessions
leave players tired, sweaty,
and pushed past what they had
previously thought to be their limits.
Sometimes players even endure
2-a-day practices running both in
the morning and after school. And
when February the 8th finally does
come around and practice begins
to take place outside with the ball
the work does not stop there.
Players continue to work and push
themselves everyday of the week
as they prepare themselves for the
season. “Why do they do this to
themselves?”, some may ask once
aware of the grueling preseason
schedule the Knights face. The
answer lies in the hopes the
Knights have for this season. As
with any high school sport the goal
is always the state championship,
and the Knights, realizing that
this season’s schedule may very
well be the hardest schedule
SHJHS soccer has ever faced, train
because they want to achieve this
goal, and are willing to sacrifice for
it. The Knights begin their season
with ECS, USJ, and Briarcrest in
3 of their first 5 games. All of
these opponents have great soccer
programs and will prove a match
for the Knights however, Coach
Harrington believes in the program
and the ability of the team. “I
believe we have the fittest team
in Tennessee.” Harrington said
while talking about the Knights
after their preseason conditioning
program. This along with all other
work the Knights put in prior to
the beginning of the season shall
hopefully translate into success as
the Knights begin a long journey
one which will hopefully end in a
state championship.
