Glenhyrst Presents
Theatre comes to Glenhyrst! Famed actor Richard Sheridan Willis is known for roles in Flashpoint, Nikita, Law
and Order and many films as well as a huge number of Shakespearean roles on stages in Britain, Canada and
the States. In cooperation with THEATREtc, Willis brings his considerable experience to Glenhyrst on Friday,
March 30 at 7:30, offering readings and part of his current one-man show to an intimate audience in the Gallery.
For serious students of the theatre he will also be offering a workshop for a limited number of attendees at 4:00
that same day in the Coach House.
Tickets for each event will be $15 for members and students but $25 (workshop) and $20 (evening) with a
package price for both of $40 to the general public.

What on earth is that? Japanese slang for “chit-chat”, it has now become a
descriptive title for events happening all over the art world – and now at Glenhyrst.
On February 23 seven artists spoke for (at least) seven minutes about
(approximately) seven slides and a large crowd learned great things about art and
the artists. There’ll be more; keep your ears and eyes open!

Kim DiFrancesco
Jane Hook’s sculptures transform idols from childhood and popular
culture, re-telling their stories in order to reveal their powerful
influence upon societal and gender roles, yet at the same time they
remind us that we have the power to influence these icons
ourselves. With uncanniness that recalls the immense sculptures of
Ron Mueck, these small and intimate creations challenge the
viewer to consider the distance between idealism and reality.

A sun-lit gallery on the second floor has been set aside with table, chairs and
drawing materials for little people to use. There are also illustrations on the
wall from some of our on-going classes, and some of these pictures have now
been framed and hung on Edmund Cockshutt’s picture rail using the metal
Renaissance painting to the stylized
paintings of Jean Paul Lemieux.

From your Board of Directors:
NOTES from the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Glenhyrst held its Annual General Meeting recently. The minutes will be posted on the Gallery’s updated web site: www.glenhyrst.ca. Joining the Board
are: Brantford resident and businessman Mike Leschuk, St George artist and former private gallery owner Karen Nonnecke and Paris resident Sue
Dimitry.
The Board thanked Gallery staff for their help over the past few years. We have faced many challenges but know that with the changes that have taken
place our members and guests are in for a year they are sure to enjoy.
We also thanked the countless volunteers like Pat Davies, those that help with events like Family Day (May 27) and Taste of Glenhyrst (June 21) and
countless others. Without your help the Gallery simply wouldn’t survive. Thank you!
The biggest concern of attending members was our new logo. During the 2009 public consultation meetings at Glenhyrst “re-branding” the Gallery was
brought up. As part of that “re-branding” the Board felt it also had to address the identified stigma of elitism that many people perceive the Gallery to
have. That starts with our logo.
Why is a logo important? Board member Murray Charters recently reminded me about the meaning of the word “logo”. As he told me: “It means, of
course, "word" and is a short form itself for "logogram" meaning "a symbol representing a whole word or phrase". Our logo, "Glenhyrst" stands for or
represents "Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant" as well as the environment in which it is situated.”
On behalf of the Board, I am happy to hear from you about concerns or if you are interested in volunteering. I can be reached at
[email protected] or 519-755-8393. Thank you for your support of arts in Brantford/Brant!
INTRODUCING OUR NEW DIRECTOR/CURATOR
An important addition to the Glenhyrst family is our new Gallery Director/Curator. The Board (with input from Brantford artist Arlene Laskey)
unanimously agreed on Marcia Lea. She is an accomplished artist with a BA (Studio Art), a Bachelor of Education and a recently completed Master of
Fine Arts. Marcia has gallery and curatorial experience. She has also been the managing partner in two Ottawa businesses. Please stop by the
Gallery and join us in welcoming Marcia and her family to Brantford and Glenhyrst!
Ms. Marcia Lea
From Marcia Lea, the new Director and Curator of the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant
My first few weeks in Brantford have shown me that the Glenhyrst Art Gallery plays a very special role in the
history and the present of the Brantford community. I am very excited to have the opportunity to play a role,
together with the board, the staff, the members and the community at large, in the creative future of such a
culturally rich institution. I would like to invite people from the community to come and introduce themselves to
me and share their hopes and dreams for the gallery.
Please call or email if you would like to set up an appointment. 519-756-5932 [email protected]
