VULCANO Guided Ammunition Family A joint program with Pinpoint Accuracy through Terminal Guidance The VULCANO-Guided Ammunition offers the most accurate artillery ammunition worldwide. The Italian company OTO Melara and the German Company Diehl Defence joined forces in the VULCANO guided ammunition program based on a bilateral government agreement. This new guided ammunition family, comprising the 127 mm type for navies as well as the 155 mm variant for army artillery, is bound to revolutionize the artillery´s and navy´s indirect fire. The combination of GPS navigation with laser or infrared sensors enbables these ammunition types to engage even small stationary and moving targets with direct hits at ranges of up to 100 km – a precision demonstrated in several test campaigns und exceeding the performance of merely GPS-guided ammunition. VULCANO V155 GLR-SAL Guided Artillery Ammunition The VULCANO 155 mm Guided Long Range (GLR) Artillery Ammunition relies on GPS Mid-Course guidance and target lock on by the Semi-Active Laser (SAL) sensor in the terminal homing phase for pin-point engagement of stationary or moving ground targets. SAL terminal homing eleminates also the target location error. Laser designation will be done by the human-in-the-loop Joint Fire Support Team (JFST) and offers the possibility of mission abort. Combining the laser sensor with a high-performance preformed-fragmented warhead (PFF) featuring insensitive munition characteristics (IM) adds to the capability of accurate target engagement. SAL-Sensor Weapon Platforms The VULCANO 155 mm Guided Artillery Ammunition can be fired from the Panzerhaubitze 2000 (PzH2000) Self-Propelled Howitzer, the FH 70 and M 777 A2 Field Howitzers as well as from the CAESAR and M109 Self-Propelled Howitzers. The NABK (NATO Armament Ballistic Kernel)-conform fire command solution is integrated in the PzH2000, FH70 and M777 A2. MFPF-Sensor GPS only VULCANO V127 GLR-SAL/FarIR Guided Naval Ammunition For naval applications, the semi-autonomous SAL Sensor, allowing mission abort, can be replaced (plug & play) by the Far Infrared Sensor (FarIR) for autonomous target engagement at sea. In addition, the mission can be performed with GPS terminal homing employing the Multifunctional Programmable Sensor to guide the ammunition to the pre-determined coordinate. FarIR Sensor The mission spectrum of the VULCANO 127 mm Guided Naval Ammunition comprises Naval Fire Support (NFS), Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW) and Sea Targets. In particular, the ammunition is capable of engaging stationary or moving single point targets as well as artillery point targets. Weapon Platforms The VULCANO Guided Ammunition Family 127 mm und 155 mm utilizes similar configurations with identical components.
