As a scientist and pharmacologist interested
in nutrition and disease prevention, I believe that
now, more than ever, more scientists should be
directly involved in the education of the general
public on issues related to environment, health
and disease prevention.
On this note I am very enthusiastic about my work
at various levels with a plant of extraordinary
potential—Moringa oleifera. Moringa is a plant
possessing an impressive nutrient profile and numerous therapeutic qualities.
For instance, the plant contains hundreds of phytochemicals (plant-specific
substances), nutritional compounds ranging from vitamins and minerals
to omega fats and all essential amino acids. We also know it can clean and
disinfect water (functioning even better than aluminum sulfate, a standard water
flocculant), has antibacterial and antiviral properties, and contains powerful
antioxidant and anticancer substances and other important compounds such as
cytokinins (zeatin). It also can function as a natural growth stimulant for other
plants. Moringa has uses outside of the human health and medical realms—it
is a terrific high-nutrient feed for animals, it is useful in agro-forestry, and its
oil has the potential to be used as biodiesel fuel. In many ways, Moringa truly
appears to be a “miracle” plant.

lipid peroxidation and suppression of atherosclerosis formation.

Rod: You have been in the nutritional industry for 35 years, are sometimes

Ken: In 1972, my family and I had a meeting and decided to start a business.
We invested a total of $1,000 between seven family members. That became
known as Nature’s Sunshine Products, the first company on a commercial scale to
encapsulate an herb. I was there a number of years as the first president. A short
time after I purchased a company called Enrich International. We grew to a huge
company and I sold all of my interest by 2000.
Rod: With so many uncertainties in the

Rod: I know you have a great love for the distributors. Why is the trust from the
corporate side to the field side so critical?

Rod: You told me that you could achieve in the next 5 to 10 years what it’s taken
you previously 35 years to accomplish. And it’s amazing that you decided to create
a new direction for this company. Not only do we have a great compensation plan,
but you have also created a path with benchmarks to put aside 25 cents of every
net dollar of profit to put back into the distributors’ pockets in the field. It’s never
been done before. Tell me, why do that?
Ken: Without the right distributors, you cannot succeed even if you’ve got
everything else in place. You cannot grow a business and have it be profitable
if you don’t have the right field people. And we have the very best. As you make
your distributors your partners and have the trust in them that they have in you,
then you can’t help but succeed. The company is strong, vibrant, well financed,
and has a great management team and a great product. Then we get strong field
leaders and there’s nothing that’s going to stop us from growing and becoming a
huge success.
Ken: Most company compensation plans put the distributors at odds with the
owners of the company. The distributors do not always understand the mentality
of the company (that they’ve got to be healthy and profitable to be able to pay the
bonuses) and the company people do not always understand the distributors. When
you start analyzing how to eliminate that barrier and make a whole team across the
board, the best way is to share the profits of a company. In essence we are making
some of the key company players become owners in a symbolic sense to where
they participate in the profits of the company. Then they have not only their interest
in mind as a distributor, but they also have the company’s health in mind because
that’s going to generate more income. It becomes a great opportunity.
