On behalf of the 430+ members of the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce, we want to welcome you to the 33rd annual A Taste of Edmonds. This is the 3rd largest festival in the state of Washington and among the “Top 100 North American Festivals”. We are delighted you have decided to spend your weekend at A Taste of Edmonds. This weekend is jam packed with fun for the whole family, check out the Arts & Crafts Vendors of all types, Food Vendors from near and far, a Beer and Wine Garden for the adults to enjoy, a Kids Area with rides and entertainment, not to mention 3 Stages of live music entertainment. Be sure to take advantage of the free Shuttle Bus Service, park at the Edmonds-Woodway High School and be delivered right to the front gate. The Taste of Edmonds is not only a lot of fun but it also helps raise money for local, non-profit organizations; each year the Edmonds Chamber is able to give back more than $16,000! Last year we had a record $6,600 in tips that were donated to the Boys & Girls Club. In addition, funds from the Taste help the Edmonds Chamber to produce other community events such as the 4th of July parade, Christmas Tree Lighting, Halloween Trick-or-Treat, Edmonds Classic Car Show and the David Stern Memorial Golf Classic which continue to thrill the 40,000 residents of Edmonds year after year. In closing, this event would not be possible without the incredible dedication and energy of our A Taste of Edmonds volunteer committee, some of whom have shown up annually since the event began 33 years ago! Having such outstanding volunteers speaks to the amazing community we have here in Edmonds. Enjoy your weekend, be safe and have “An Edmonds Kind of Day”! At the time we went to press this with this program their were 30 unique vendors offering edibles from the main entree to desserts impossible to pass up. Here is just a sample of what visitors will find: Bambuza Vietnam Bistro Honey glazed chicken skewers are easy to eat at the festival and they go great with a freshly made spring roll. If you are a noodle lover try the combo. Biringer Farm Northwesterners know that it is not a fair without a Biringer’s warm scone with raspberry jam. The only thing you might want to skip a scone for is the strawberry shortcake! Canarino Gelato Gelato, the Italian word for ice cream is always churned slow for a thicker consistency. You might have a hard time choosing which flavor. CaribBean Cuisine It’s island time with Belizean banana leaf tamales and they are gluten free! Caribbean rice and beans are also a favorite, best followed by a coconut macaroon. Club Sunglass - Lemonade There is lemonade and there is the perfect glass of the best refresher a summer day demands, which is what you get with this Taste vendor. Corn Roasters Nothing says summer more than a sweet ear of fresh corn, but these guys have some great seasonings to add to flavor. These guys took best side dish at the Taste Off in 2014. Crepealicious Put a bit of French flavor in your Taste experience with a chicken artichoke or shrimp and scallop crepe. Lots of choices including the sweet stuff like mixed berry or chocolate turtle as well. Curry House They serve a delectable chicken with rice, but you may be tempted to go right to their dessert — elephant ears. Delicious Asia Grill A skewer or a comb? Whatever your choice from the menu, the food is traditional and sizzling hot. Remember there is always room for an eggroll. The Ice Cream Lady has all the fixin’s to make the best sundaes. We recommend the brownie hot fudge sundae, having had a lot of experience devouring them. Insatiable Cat Kona Ice Jeremy Westmoreland Concessions Lemongrass Restaurant It is all the stuff you loved as a kid, and secretly still do . . . corn dogs, nachos, ice cold lemonade. Check it out. Kafe Neo Owner Sofia knows her Greek, as diners at her many successful restaurants will tell you. Try the Gyro and the greek fries. Horchiata Drink & Fruit Cups A south of the border treat, these Mexican style beverages are made with fresh fruit. Fruit cups are also available. On a hot day nothing says cold more than shaved ice with your favorite flavor. Melody Meats It is said that they have a taste between chicken and fish, so you might want to try these fried frog legs for yourself. Moonshine BBQ Beef brisket with all the fixin’s including corn bread, baked beans and coleslaw make a stop at Moonshine the full meal deal. There are also St. Louis style ribs, brisket chili and potato salad. Old Fashion Kettle Corn Co The official scent for any self-respecting festival has to be Kettle Corn. It also seems to be the perfect accessory as almost everyone takes a bag home with them. Who can resist salty and sweet? (Continued on page 8) Serving seasoned and grilled chicken or pork Satay (meat on skewers), as well as piping hot noodles. Lopez Island Ice Cream With 18 plus flavors of all natural ice cream, you may have to pace yourself so you can start with one flavor and visit later for another. Root beer, orange cream or cherry Cola floats are also available. Performing for a whole new generation of women that won’t be intimidated, HELL’S BELLES actively encourages legions of lady fans to stand up and be counted. The band collaborates with women musicians and causes as a part of their mission towards rock and roll inclusion. It is not some down-your-throat feminism they are promoting, but rather proactive support towards the continued march towards the balancing of the gender scales. The thousands of shows HELL’S BELLES have played around the world, including Japan, Canada, and the good ol’ USA (including Alaska), enjoying legendary performances of epic proportions. There’s not a HELL’S BELLES audience that hasn’t been blown away by the raw power and attention to AC/DC details and the undeniable appeal that these belles deliver with undying devotion. From “Live Wire” to “The Jack” to “TNT,” not to mention AC/ DC’s landmark hits “Highway to Hell,”“Thunderstruck,” and “Back in Black” — the marathon set lists changes to include a fresh variety of classics, but the perfection and passion of the show never does. It’s an all out rock-n-roll assault that leaves audiences both satisfied and begging for more. HELL’S BELLES keeps conquering new cities, new states, and new countries. They’ll be at A Taste of Edmonds bringing AC/DC in sound and spirit. mo HELL’S BELLES, a committed, ferocious, group of women rock musicians delivering authentic AC/DC to their unbelievably supportive and wicked awesome fans is made up of Amber, Mandy, Laura, Lisa, Sharon, and Adrian “Angus” Conner. HELL’S BELLES are first and foremost dedicated AC/DC fanatics. This is what the group’s members all have in common. They are all part of a huge community of devotees to one of the greatest rock-n-roll bands in the world and they strive to deliver with mechanical precision and passionate fury the music they love. Endorsed by Angus Young himself (Blender Magazine, 2003), HELL’S BELLES are the closest one can get without actually moving to Australia and joining AC/DC’s road crew. A Taste of Edmonds visitors will have a chance to experience HELL’S BELLES on the Beer Garden Stage on Saturday, August 15 starting at 8:30 pm. HELL’S BELLES formed in 2000, was the brainchild of former members Amy Stolzenbach (guitar) and Om Johari (vocals). HELL’S BELLES’ current line-up features original member Mandy Reed — rock solid and born ready as Cliff Williams (bass guitar).Adrian Conner is a dreadlock slinger and wicked player as Angus Young (lead guitar). Lisa Brisbois is sly and subtly intense as Malcolm Young (rhythm guitar). Laura D is a heavy hitter as Phil Rudd (drums). Joining the ranks in 2011 – all the way from Australia, Amber Saxon, is the kind of bombastic hard rock power that makes no apologies and is dangerous around the edges, as Bon Scott & Brian Johnson (Vocals). One of these guys, Pat Slusher was gainfully employed as a Marketing Director for a regional fair, and before this he had worked for a concert company. He knew a bit about live entertainment. “I also got a lot of encouragement from my friend JP Patches,” said Slusher. “The first festival we ever performed at was the Fife International Festival.” Now twenty years later Slusher and his group of referees have outlive plenty of events. Slusher compares the group to a baseball team, players come and go, with the act being the core of the show. “The referees are not the focal point,” said Slusher. “It is all about the kids from the audience who join us on stage to compete.” The referees are the game show emcees, requiring good sportsmanship among the players, which Slusher points out is important to the kids. The referees can usually accommodate 30 to 40 children during their performance. The ones that don’t get to participate on stage are encouraged to cheer their friends on. Contestants do have the chance to win prizes, but often the real prizes on stage are the surprises confronted by the referees when working with kids. “A part of the show is a Spelling Bee where we have smaller kids get on stage and we ask them to spell simple words. The last kid in line is always asked to spell something completely different from the others, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” said Slusher. “A few weeks ago we had this 8-year-old on stage and instead of being totally surprised be the word he spelled it, and spelled it correctly. Needless to say we gave him a pretty good prize.” “In the 20 years I have been staging the Rowdy Referees I have had tremendous luck with kids just being wonderful on stage,” he continued. “Kids really get it and they have a lot of fun.” Slusher admits that the Rowdy Refs may not be as Rowdy as they once were off stage but on stage the positive energy from the contestants is contagious. What’s not fun about cream pies in your face or being covered in toilet paper. The highlight of every Rowdy Refs show is the TeamWork Challenge which involves four teams of kids & parents in a hugely funny contest that fills the stage with over two-hundred balloons. You’ve just gotta see it for yourself. Other stunts include the cartoon character “Pillow Stuff-Off,” Musical Pies, “Who’s Full of Hot Air?” … Jelly Bean Dive, and more. In-between stunts, the Rowdy Refs introduce the audience to the basics of good sportsmanship, show ‘em some cool magic tricks, and maybe even amaze them with a demonstration of “fast art.” Just this month the Rowdy Referees put on a special show for a group of children from China, who were brought to the U.S. along with a crew that is filming for a new kid’s TV show None of the Referees speak Chinese, but he says that the gags speak for themselves. “Meeting all these kids has really renewed my faith in the generations,” said Slusher. “It is so great to see families having a lot of fun together and audiences all over the country enjoy it.” Catch the Rowdy Referees at the Kids Stage all 3 days as they perform and handle the emcee duties. A Taste of Edmonds Official Program August 14-16, 2015 19 Bring a food donation to help homeless children This year A Taste of Edmonds will have collection barrels at all of its entrances to collect nonperishable food items for Nourishing Network, a weekend meal program for children in the Edmonds School District. Formed in 2014 by the Foundation for Edmonds School District, the program strives to address the hunger felt by the more than 350 homeless students who attend school. “There are children that leave school on Friday afternoon and do not have another meal until they get back to school on Monday morning,” said Deb Anderson, Executive Director for the Foundation. With the help of community partners and volunteers the group was able to serve 13 schools in the district last year from elementary to high school. This year their goal is to send kids home for the weekend with food at 33 schools. Families that participate must sign a form and advise the Foundation of any food allergies and the number of children in the family. They need to explain if they have a heat source for cooking, as many are living in their cars or shelters. Volunteers meet every Wednesday at the former Edmonds Woodway High School pantry and prepare packages to be sent home Friday afternoon with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for two days. Last year this meant 1,500 weekend meals were prepared each week. “In our first year our goal was to feed 12 percent of the district’s homeless population,” said Anderson. “We actually served 19 percent. In September we want to extend this to 35 percent.” There is not enough transitional housing in Snohomish county,” explained Anderson. “Imagine entering a classroom on Monday morning and trying to learn when you have not eaten since lunch on Friday.” Collection receptacles at A Taste will be marked with bright green Seattle North/ Edmonds squares and the nourishing network logo. Ideal items include mac-and -cheese, soups, SpaghettiOs, shelf stable milk, juice boxes and snacks. Community partners for the Nourishing Network include the Hazel Miller Foundation, Campbell Nelson VW/Nissan and Heritage Bank.
