Growing Up in Atlanta
M.L. King as a Boy
Martin Luther King Jr. was popular with
many people, black and white. But some
people were angered by his views. At the
age of 39, he was shot and killed in
Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968. He is
buried at a site in Atlanta not far from the
neighborhood home where he grew up.
The Mini Page thanks the Martin Luther
King Jr. National Historic Site, a unit of
the National Park Service, for help with
this issue.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
As a boy
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a
leader in the struggle for equal
rights for black citizens. He believed
in using peaceful means to change
unfair segregation laws.
These laws segregated, or set
apart, black people from other
citizens. Blacks were not allowed in
many public restaurants. They had
to sit at the back of buses in some
parts of the country.
Finally, Congress passed laws
that gave black people many of the
rights Dr. King had been working
for.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born
Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Ga. The
third Monday in January has been
set aside as a national holiday in his
honor.
Martin Luther King Jr. was called
"M.L." when he was growing up in
Atlanta. His childhood was very
much like that of many children
growing up in the 1930s.
He enjoyed teasing his older
sister, Christine. He also had a
younger brother, A.D.
He liked roller skating, bicycling,
baseball, basketball and books.
M.L. did chores such as helping
with dishes and hauling coal to keep
the furnace going. He received an
allowance of 25 cents a week. He
also made money with a paper route.
Martin
Luther
King's
birthplace
and
boyhood
home was
in a wellto-do
section
called
Sweet
Auburn.
Members
of Dr.
King's
family lived
in this
house for
32 years.
His family
His mother was an elementary
schoolteacher until she married. She
was also a very good musician. She
insisted that her children take
piano lessons.
His grandmother encouraged his
reading and praised him when he
finished a book. Education was
always stressed in the King home.
An aunt who lived with the family
read books and newspapers to him.
M.L. went to church every
Sunday. He was expected to follow
in the footsteps of both his father
and grandfather. He later became
co-pastor at the neighborhood
Baptist church where both of them
had served.

Dr. King's "I Have
a Dream" speech
Dr. King was the leader
of a huge demonstration
that took place in
Washington, D.C., on Aug.
28, 1963. The main idea
behind the demonstration
was to encourage Congress
to pass a law that would
give blacks equal rights.
The demonstration was
called the "March on
Washington for Jobs and
Freedom." It has been
called one of the greatest
demonstrations in the
country's history. More than
250,000 people took part.
Dr. King was the last to
speak. He gave a moving
speech, a plea for equal
rights and dignity for all
citizens. It has become
known as the "I Have a
Dream" speech.
The next year a law was
passed that prohibited
racial discrimination in
public places. It also called
for equal opportunities in
employment and education.

Martin Luther King Jr. grew up
in Atlanta. The section was called
Sweet Auburn because it was a
bustling black neighborhood with
many successful businesses and
well-to-do families.
M.L.'s boyhood home and two
blocks around it have been made
into a national historic site. Some of
the homes in the area are being
restored.
Thousands of people visit the
community each year to find out
more about this great civil rights
leader. Today, the area around these
two blocks is still a busy part of the
city.
The Sweet Auburn of today is still an
active community. Most of the buildings
in the national historic site are privately
owned and occupied and are not open
to the public.

M.L. King as a Boy
Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each
week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page's content and offer
activities that will help your students reach them.
This week's standards:
• Students understand the people and events celebrated in commemorative holidays. (History)
• Students identify and describe the ways family, groups and community influence the
individual's daily life and personal choices. (Social Studies: Individual Development and
Identity)
Activities:
1. Fold a piece of paper in half. On one half, draw a picture of Martin Luther King Jr. doing
chores as a young boy. On the other half, draw a picture of yourself doing a chore in your
home. Write a sentence telling why it is important for children to have jobs around the
house.
2. Look through your newspaper and circle items Martin Luther King Jr. would have used or
enjoyed as a young boy. Find (a) something to play with outdoors, (b) a game to play indoors,
(c) something he would enjoy doing with his sister, and (d) something to read.
3. Look at the map of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in today's Mini Page.
Choose three specific places at the site you would like to visit. Write three sentences
"xPlaining why you chose those sites.
4. Look in your newspaper for a story or photo about a historic place in your community that is
connected to a particular individual. Design a brochure for the site. Explain the history of the
site and tell why the person connected to the site is important.
5. Use reference books, biographies and the Internet to learn more about Martin Luther King
Jr. as an adult. Write a paragraph describing his contributions to the civil rights movement
in this country.
