The Bugle Battlefield Boogie Club CREATE DANCE HISTORY CREATE ----------------------------------------------- Fredericksburg, Virginia Vol. 1 No.6 A MEMORY November/December 2005 President’s Message The Fall is upon us….and we have our one year anniversary of the Battlefield Boogie Club to bring in mid-November. We are going to have a birthday party/football/social on November 20, so mark your calendars. We will celebrate our one year in existence, the fabulous Redskins, and a time for a social get together to dance. You can’t beat that! Take a look at the notice in the newsletter about the November 20 birthday party! You would not want to miss it.! A lot has happened these past couple of months. We had a general membership meeting on October 4 and I announced several things for members to know. If you were not at the Loft that night, some of the highlights were: Our treasury report looks good – we have approximately $750 in our treasury; the 50/50 has been popular – earning a little for our treasury, while having lucky winners take half of the pot; the survey about our club night on Tuesday or Thursday, resulted in more votes for Thursday. However, we are going to postpone that change because of major effort and cost that has been made for us and for the Loft to promote Tuesdays for our club night. So, for now, hang in there, we will table this for another visit the first of the year. We now have a web site to be shared with all other clubs, dancers and friends. Check it out: www.BattlefieldBoogieclub.com. See President, Page 2 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER CONTENTS Page 1 President’s Letter Page 2 Recognize This Picture? Battlefield Boogie Club The Bugle November/December 2005 Vol. 1 No. 6 ----------------------------------------------- President: Big League I feel like we have made the “big league.” I am so proud of our club! - Our holiday party will be at the Loft on December 13 instead of at the FOP, December 17 as previously planned. We believe that we will have more turnout of our members if we have it on a regular dance night, instead of a weekend because everyone gets busy during the holidays and especially on the weekend. So, mark your calendars – December 13! - We will be sending out membership renewals in the next couple of weeks. The membership dues will still be $10.00 for one year. The best bargain in town! Pass the word on joining our club, it is becoming a bulwark in Fredericksburg. We have a nomination committee that will be asking you if you want to run for an office for the BBC. Elections will be held in December. –Be nice to them when they ask you…and consider running for office. Your contribution to our club is imperative. –Now, we haven’t seen many of you for a while, and I know you all are busy. Coming out to our dance on Tuesdays and our events is sometimes difficult, but I want you all to know that I appreciate your support in helping our club not only prosper, but be one of the best clubs on record. We truly have great members, the best music/DJ in central Virginia, and an unmatched spirit for dance and friendship. Try to come out more often as we kick off our 2nd year, ….and keep our spirit going! So, don’t forget, November 20, and December 13….join us, its good medicine! Let the good times continue to roll, Audrey Borja, President 1005 Princess Anne Street in Ole Town Fredericksburg – Plenty of parking available. 7:30 P.M. This is where the BBC meets to dance, be with our friends, make new friends, have a drink, enjoy delicious food, and of course, listen to great music. 8:00P.M. Intermediate lessons are taught on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Tuesday Night Drink and Dinner Specials are offered to BBC members by the LOFT management. Tuesday nights -2- Battlefield Boogie Club The Bugle November/December 2005 Vol. 1 No.6 ----------------------------------------------- Virginia Shags! by Heather Jennings On October 15, Craig and I traveled to Richmond to attend the Richmond Shag Club’s “Fabulous Fifties” dance party. The dance, held at the ACCA Shriners’ Temple was attended by a large group of (perhaps 250?) shaggers, many costumed in 50’s garb, dancing to the music of guest DJ, Murl Augustine. The Shriners’ Temple is already an incredible facility, but it was also nicely decorated with a 50’s theme. The dance began around 6:00 with a catered dinner where we were treated to some of the best barbecue and fried chicken I’ve had in awhile, but which also included mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans, coleslaw, rolls and dessert! Yum! After dinner we talked with friends from the Richmond Shag Club, watched as winners were crowned in the bop, hula hoop, and costume contests and then shagged the night away until after 11:00 pm; all in all, a very enjoyable evening. On October 22, Craig and I traveled to Merrifield, Virginia to attend the Northern Virginia Shag Club’s annual fall workshop & dance. The event, held at the Elan Dance Sport studio (formerly the Virginia Ballroom) was attended by about 80 shaggers, including several other BBC members such as Jewell Pradier, Ann Thompson, Ron & Brenda Bishop, Dennis and Nancy Gehley, and Don & Audrey Borja all dancing to the music of BBC’s own DJ members, Craig Jennings and Dennis & Nancy Gehley. The event began with two shag workshops by Pro competitors Leslie Melton and William Greene, an incredible dancing duo!! Following the workshops, there was a dance from7:30 to midnight with heavy hors d’ oeuvres and mixers provided by the shag club. In between Craig’s DJ slots, we danced a bunch, socialized with our BBC and NVSC friends and had a great shaggin’ time!! On October 22, there was also a Halloween Charity dance held in Newport News, VA by the Colonial Shag Club. Since I’m still finding it impossible to be in two places at once, Craig & I were unable to attend this event, but the Colonial Shag Club is a fun bunch of folks and I’m sure they had a great time! Many of them have regular dances on Saturday nights and I encourage you to support these nearby shag clubs so in turn, they will support our own BBC. Besides, they are always a fun time and you will meet new friends and probably pick up a new shag step or two! What could be better than shaggin’ away your weekend with a bunch of fun lovin’ Virginia dancers??? For more info on shag events around our area and within the state, check the Events page of our own web site at: www.battlefieldboogieclub.com. See you shaggin! We DJ sorts have lists too. We have our Monthly Top 20, which we get bugged about six to eight times a month by the list people. Some of us have a list we bring each time we play, hoping that our guess as to what people will dance to will be on that list. And as we age (like me), some of us have to bring a list to jog our memory of what we think should be played! Some of us also have that infamous “DON’T PLAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES” list. This later list is usually where we put music that we don’t personally like too much. That’s not to say someone else won’t like it. But ah yes, remember the DJ answer to that…”I didn’t bring that song with me.” In our DJ Association, we have lists. A monthly top 20 which we don’t get bugged about until a general member membership or board meeting. We also have an end of the year list to come up with the Top 50 songs for that particular year. Some DJ’s get lists from people within a shag club or nightclub they play. We get handed this list as if the person writing the list has a crystal ball or all knowing mind as to what people will dance to. And even worse, some of these “list makers” just want the same old songs played, without ever listening to something knew or different. An example of this is playing a birthday song. There are several good ones to choose from. Just because a DJ plays one rendition that is not usually played…does that make it wrong, inappropriate, or is it that the listener is just so used to hearing the same song over and over, they question a new song? Many people ask DJ’s about their all time favorite top 5, 10, 20, 50 or 100. It may be an easier task, for some, to ask what is your all time favorite Classic Rhythm & Blues, Classic Beach, Smoothie, current Beach, or Motown. On that note, I decided to list a few of my favorites in these genres. Send me some of yours…we’ll print em! Classic Rhythm & Blues: Not Trustworthy (A Lyin’ Woman), Tanqueray, Morning Noon & Night Classic Beach: 60 Minute Man, Shakin’ The Shack, Sick and Tired Smoothie: Who Do You Know In Heaven, I’ll Always Be In Love With You, Outside of Paradise Current Beach: I Want A Love I Can See, Is The Magic Still There, Something Smooth Motown: Everything’s Coming Up Love, I Don’t Wanna Loose Your Lovin’, Tryin’ To Love Two Until next time… See ya on the dance floor! -5- Battlefield Boogie Club The Bugle November/December 2005 Vol. 1 No. 6 ----------------------------------------------- What’s Cooking?
