On Saturday, September 28, more than 5,000 walkers, runners, survivors and volunteers
will walk, run, stroll and strut throughout IU’s beautiful campus for the 14th Hoosiers
Outrun Cancer to benefit the Indiana University Health Olcott Center for Cancer Education.
“We visited the Olcott Center two weeks ago and were taken aback by the caring and
compassionate nature of the staff and how professionally they deal with people in a
difficult time of their lives,” said first-time Hoosiers Outrun Cancer Chair Paul Martin. “This
service is so important for patients. It’s truly wonderful that the funding from HOC allows
these services to be offered for free.”
The IU Health Olcott Center for Cancer Education’s comprehensive – and free – services provide
comfort, support and education to cancer patients, their caregivers and loved ones throughout
our community. Hoosiers Outrun Cancer is the primary funding source for the Center.
In addition to providing support at the Center, more than 3,200 cancer screenings have
been offered to community members free of charge. Additionally, 60 health fairs and/or
classes occur annually to raise cancer awareness.
“Hoosiers Outrun Cancer sends a message that we as a community are behind the
people who regrettably have to go through cancer treatment,” said Paul. “It provides an
opportunity for people to demonstrate their compassion for such a great cause.”
Unfortunately for Paul, it is a cause that he knows much about. “Hoosiers Outrun Cancer is
near and dear to my heart primarily because my younger sister is being treated for cancer
at the moment in Ireland,” he explained. “The event isn’t only about giving something to a
great cause, it is also a chance to hear others’ stories and share experiences with people.”
Hoosiers Outrun Cancer offers something for everyone: a 5K race, a 5K walk, a 1-mile
family walk and a 1-mile kids’ run. According to Paul, many fun pre-race and post-race
activities are planned for both adults and children. There will also be a survivors gathering
and celebration. People can even be a part of the
fun without the run by being a Spirit Runner! (Spirit
Runners support Hoosiers Outrun Cancer without
being a race participant.)
B L O O M I N G TO N H O S P I TA L F O U N D AT I O N
“If you’ve not been to Hoosiers Outrun Cancer or if you’re
on the fence, give it a try,” encouraged Paul. “If you
experience it just once, you’ll be back year after year.”
Be sure to join in the festivities at this year’s
Hoosiers Outrun Cancer on Saturday, September 28.

SUMMER 2013

Teams are Crucial to
Hoosiers Outrun Cancer Success
Team Jenny has participated from the start
One important aspect to Hoosiers Outrun
Cancer’s success year in and year out are the
teams. The 2012 Hoosiers Outrun Cancer saw
a record 168 teams participate!
Bloomington High School North and
Bloomington High School South always
put together large teams (700+ and 400+
respectively), as do various fraternities, sororities
and athletic teams from IU. Teams of survivors
are created. Corporate teams from local
businesses participate.
Perhaps the most touching teams are those created to memorialize a loved one lost to cancer. Team Jenny is one such team.
Team Jenny was among the first teams ever at Hoosiers Outrun Cancer – and the largest that first year with over 200 members. Team Jenny has
participated in Hoosiers Outrun Cancer every year since.
“We formed a team at the inaugural Hoosiers Outrun Cancer event in 2000 in honor of our daughter, Jenny,” explained Jane Suhr. Jenny died of
brain cancer on December 29, 1999 at the age of 20. She was a junior at IU.
“Jenny had flu-like symptoms of headaches and nausea in the fall of 1999,” shared Jane. “Double vision took her to the doctor the week before
Thanksgiving where a brain tumor was detected via an MRI. She had surgery on the Friday after Thanksgiving and did fairly well following her
surgery.” Unfortunately, cancer took her life six short weeks later.
Team Jenny has been the largest community team every year since 2000 and its members have raised literally hundreds of thousands of dollars
for Hoosiers Outrun Cancer and the IU Health Olcott Center for Cancer Education. “The library in the Olcott Center was made possible by her sisters
at Kappa Kappa Gamma (IU). There is also a plaque sharing Jen’s story at the Center,” noted Jane.
“Teams aren’t just critical to the fundraising component of Hoosiers Outrun Cancer. Teams are crucial to the spirit of the event,” said event Chair
Paul Martin. “Teams such as Team Jenny are what truly make the day so very special to so many participants.”

From the Chair
Dear Friends,
Welcome to your summer installment of Developments News and the opportunity to celebrate
what your philanthropic support continues to provide for IU Health Bloomington Hospital. The
environment of healthcare continues to change and will undoubtedly face new challenges ahead,
but I assure you that your dedication to action for patients in the south central region will endure
and continue to make a significant difference.
As Chair of the Bloomington Hospital Foundation I am filled with pride when I reflect on
the leadership resources that exist right here – locally. Our generous philanthropic partners,
our community-minded Board of Directors, and our professional staff all have insight and
contributions that will help IU Health Bloomington Hospital reach the utmost potential for growth
and success through philanthropic investment.

Foundation Happenings
On June 8, the Foundation held a
truly unique event at the Woolery Mill!
Almost 250 guests came to experience an
Alm
outrageo evening of high-energy entertainment by a
outrageous
band called The Menus and the band did not disappoint!
Dancing was enjoyed by many and because it was such a
beautiful night,
nigh those who chose not to dance were able to
enjoy the even
evening on the patio. The Foundation expresses
its gratitude tto Dr. Jim Laughlin and the Pediatrics Group of
IU Health Sou
Southern Indiana Physicians for underwriting the
event. The eve
evening raised nearly $25,000 for the
New Beginnings
Beginning Campaign.
Mike and Lia Baker were the $2,500 winners of the raffle at Rock-N-Roll Baby!
Congratulations to the 2013 Excellence in Caring and Bloomington Hospital Foundation Employee Award Winners.
These outstanding team members were nominated by their peers and recognized in late May with a banquet honoring their dedication to
IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

In an effort to reduce costs associated
with the printing of the Annual Report
(as well as save a few trees!), we have decided to put
this year’s report on our website. You may find it at
bloomingtonhospitalfoundation.org. Once there, simply

The Foundation is grateful for the support of
corporate sponsors like CarDon & Associates, Inc.
for their dedication to the Foundation, our hospital
and the community. Pictured here are Mary Lang, Major Gifts
Officer for the Foundation (left), and Jill Rusk-Parris, Director
of Business Development for CarDon & Associates, Inc.
CarDon donated $10,000 as a Corporate Partner to support
both Hoosiers Outrun Cancer and IU Health Bloomington
Integrated Care Management.
When the eight-bed IU Health Hospice House
was built, four additional “shells” for rooms were also
built in preparation of anticipated future expansion. At the
May 9 Bloomington Hospital Foundation Board meeting,
the Board of Directors voted to approve the four-bed
expansion/build-out of the IU Health Hospice House.

100 Men Who Cook Was Once Again
a Delicious Success
Full bellies and smiling faces: that was the scene exiting IU’s Assembly Hall on April 27
t
following 100 Men Who Cook. The annual fundraiser, presented by Old National Bank, benefits
ew
the Bloomington Hospital Foundation. This year 100 Men Who Cook directly benefitted the New
Beginnings Campaign.
More than 650 people gathered for a food lover’s paradise featuring food stations manned by
Bloomington celebrities, local chefs and hospital supporters. Together, more than $40,000 was
raised for the New Beginnings Campaign.
Mick Lyon has participated in 100 Men Who Cook since its inception. His pulled pork was
quite a hit this year. “Since I have cooked and participated each year, I guess I am hooked,” he
said. “I love raising money for good causes so how could I not participate in an event that is so
interesting? It’s a lot of fun, too. I have a bit of a competitive streak so I always work to create
the very best dish I can.”
Mick shared that year after year he has seen happy faces and lots of laughter. “I think it is a
unique experience that you can’t get anywhere else,” he explained. “And it benefits a great cause.”
The Foundation would like to thank everyone who participated in and supported this wonderful
event. Plan to join in the fun on April 26, 2014, when 100 Men Who Cook will support
Volunteers In Medicine.
