Summer 2013 - Bloomington Hospital Foundation
NEWS Developments DEDICATED TO THE FRIENDS OF THE BLOOMINGTON HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Registration Open for 14th HOOSIERSOUTRUNCANCER THANK YOU TO OUR 2013 SPONSORS Hoosiers Outrun Cancer has always been very well supported by participants; but it’s also importantly supported by the local business community. A special thank you to our 2013 sponsors (as of July 19, 2013): Popular Event Benefits IU Health Olcott Center for Cancer Education CORPORATE PARTNERS O Boston Scientific On Saturday, September 28, more than 5,000 walkers, runners, survivors and volunteers will walk, run, stroll and strut throughout IU’s beautiful campus for the 14th Hoosiers Outrun Cancer to benefit the Indiana University Health Olcott Center for Cancer Education. “We visited the Olcott Center two weeks ago and were taken aback by the caring and compassionate nature of the staff and how professionally they deal with people in a difficult time of their lives,” said first-time Hoosiers Outrun Cancer Chair Paul Martin. “This service is so important for patients. It’s truly wonderful that the funding from HOC allows these services to be offered for free.” The IU Health Olcott Center for Cancer Education’s comprehensive – and free – services provide comfort, support and education to cancer patients, their caregivers and loved ones throughout our community. Hoosiers Outrun Cancer is the primary funding source for the Center. In addition to providing support at the Center, more than 3,200 cancer screenings have been offered to community members free of charge. Additionally, 60 health fairs and/or classes occur annually to raise cancer awareness. “Hoosiers Outrun Cancer sends a message that we as a community are behind the people who regrettably have to go through cancer treatment,” said Paul. “It provides an opportunity for people to demonstrate their compassion for such a great cause.” Unfortunately for Paul, it is a cause that he knows much about. “Hoosiers Outrun Cancer is near and dear to my heart primarily because my younger sister is being treated for cancer at the moment in Ireland,” he explained. “The event isn’t only about giving something to a great cause, it is also a chance to hear others’ stories and share experiences with people.” Hoosiers Outrun Cancer offers something for everyone: a 5K race, a 5K walk, a 1-mile family walk and a 1-mile kids’ run. According to Paul, many fun pre-race and post-race activities are planned for both adults and children. There will also be a survivors gathering and celebration. People can even be a part of the fun without the run by being a Spirit Runner! (Spirit Runners support Hoosiers Outrun Cancer without being a race participant.) B L O O M I N G TO N H O S P I TA L F O U N D AT I O N “If you’ve not been to Hoosiers Outrun Cancer or if you’re on the fence, give it a try,” encouraged Paul. “If you experience it just once, you’ll be back year after year.” Be sure to join in the festivities at this year’s Hoosiers Outrun Cancer on Saturday, September 28. SUMMER 2013 bloomingtonhospitalfoundation.org Teams are Crucial to Hoosiers Outrun Cancer Success Team Jenny has participated from the start One important aspect to Hoosiers Outrun Cancer’s success year in and year out are the teams. The 2012 Hoosiers Outrun Cancer saw a record 168 teams participate! Bloomington High School North and Bloomington High School South always put together large teams (700+ and 400+ respectively), as do various fraternities, sororities and athletic teams from IU. Teams of survivors are created. Corporate teams from local businesses participate. Perhaps the most touching teams are those created to memorialize a loved one lost to cancer. Team Jenny is one such team. Team Jenny was among the first teams ever at Hoosiers Outrun Cancer – and the largest that first year with over 200 members. Team Jenny has participated in Hoosiers Outrun Cancer every year since. “We formed a team at the inaugural Hoosiers Outrun Cancer event in 2000 in honor of our daughter, Jenny,” explained Jane Suhr. Jenny died of brain cancer on December 29, 1999 at the age of 20. She was a junior at IU. “Jenny had flu-like symptoms of headaches and nausea in the fall of 1999,” shared Jane. “Double vision took her to the doctor the week before Thanksgiving where a brain tumor was detected via an MRI. She had surgery on the Friday after Thanksgiving and did fairly well following her surgery.” Unfortunately, cancer took her life six short weeks later. Team Jenny has been the largest community team every year since 2000 and its members have raised literally hundreds of thousands of dollars for Hoosiers Outrun Cancer and the IU Health Olcott Center for Cancer Education. “The library in the Olcott Center was made possible by her sisters at Kappa Kappa Gamma (IU). There is also a plaque sharing Jen’s story at the Center,” noted Jane. “Teams aren’t just critical to the fundraising component of Hoosiers Outrun Cancer. Teams are crucial to the spirit of the event,” said event Chair Paul Martin. “Teams such as Team Jenny are what truly make the day so very special to so many participants.” HOOSIERSOUTRUNCANCER IMPORTANT DATES AND DEADLINES September 18 (at 5 pm) Team registration deadline – please call 812.353.5000 no later than September 20 to arrange for early Team packet pickup September 23 (at 5 pm) September 27 (11 am – 6 pm) September 28 (7:30 am – 9:30 am) RACE DAY SCHEDULE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 7:30 – 9:30 am Onsite registration and material pick-up at West Concourse of IU Memorial Stadium Individual /Online Registration closes (Mail or Fax to 812.353.5828) 9:15 am Cancer Survivors gather near stage 9:30 – 9:50 am Opening Ceremony Onsite registration and/or material pick up at the West Concourse of IU Memorial Stadium T-shirts will be given as available. 9:50 – 10:00 am Final Instructions 10:00 am Start of 1-Mile Kids’ Run and Family Walk 10:20 am Start of 5K Competitive Run* 10:25 am Start of 5K Walk 11:15 am Awards Ceremony Sorry, race materials cannot be mailed. *For the safety of all participants, strollers and pets are not allowed in the 5K Run. 2 From the Chair Dear Friends, Welcome to your summer installment of Developments News and the opportunity to celebrate what your philanthropic support continues to provide for IU Health Bloomington Hospital. It’s a lot of fun, too. I have a bit of a competitive streak so I always work to create the very best dish I can.” Mick shared that year after year he has seen happy faces and lots of laughter. “I think it is a unique experience that you can’t get anywhere else,” he explained. “And it benefits a great cause.” The Foundation would like to thank everyone who participated in and supported this wonderful event.
