Planning and ARCH
1st Quarter 2014
SCHNECK MEDICAL CENTER
In 2013 we worked with the hospital to deliver multiple
projects which were a direct result of the master facility
plan we completed in 2012.
The antiquated Cystoscopy Lab
equipment was failing and urgently
needed to be replaced. A new room
was designed almost twice the size
to better accommodate multiple
pieces of new and future equipment.
A dedicated Infusion center
with 6 recliners and 4 private
rooms was created to relieve
a
congested
outpatient
treatment area of the
hospital.
A psychiatric counseling suite was
designed to provide greater privacy
for patients seeking these services.
A new computer training room was
created to serve up to 24 staff at one
time.
A new 8,000 sf Orthopedic Physician
Suite replaced their former smaller
suite location on campus. The new
suite contains 13 exam rooms and a
general radiographic room.
All projects for SMC were constructed by CH Garmong & Sons.
IU HEALTH BLOOMINGTON
HOSPITAL LIBERTY DRIVE
Last year we assisted the hospital
in turning an existing church and
conference center into a medical
office building. Opening in December
2013, this completely renovated
22,000 sf two-story building
included space for Southern Indiana
Physicians’ Outpatient Family
Practice, Laboratory, Urology, and X-Ray suites. In
addition to the building renovation, the project included
modifications to the existing parking lot and sidewalks.
HIGHER EDUCATION
Over the past year we designed and
completed renovation projects for our
higher education clients. At Indiana
University the projects were in both
the Geology and Chemistry buildings in
Bloomington. At Ivy Tech we completed
a new classroom and faculty offices in
Columbus. We have enjoyed building
relationships with our new clients,
and providing creative solutions to the
challenges that each project brings.
EMPLOYEE NEWS
Brianna Wetzel has created “Keystone”, a
not-for-profit that is geared towards being
a positive support to teenagers through
relationships and providing a nurturing
environment for these kids to hangout on Friday nights in
her hometown of Cambridge City. Great job Bri!!
Bill is still amazed at what a pair
of scissors can do to his new
“Cavashon” puppy Sadie. After the
snow created clumps in her hair, it
had to be trimmed. Now her hair is
as short as Bills!
PROS & CONS OF BIM
Building Information Modeling (or BIM) involves
creating and using an intelligent 3D model to inform
and communicate project decisions. It is changing the
industry on how buildings, infrastructures, and utilities
are planned, designed, built, and managed. It is key on a
BIM project that all the design and building team utilize
the same software to create a unified package for the
owner, otherwise the process become disconnected.
While a great tool in design and construction, it may be
completely useless for most owners if they don’t have the
capabilities of managing such products. It requires more
time and information from those involved to create the
model which can produce great coordination between the
trades, but this process is not best suited for small or fast
track projects, or those with tight schedules. Ask us to
explain the pros and cons associated with the use of BIM.
Don’t request that it be used without knowing what it’s
all about!
RIVERVIEW HOSPITAL
LABORATORY & PHARMACY
In 2013 we worked with the hospital to design and implement a completely new Laboratory and Pharmacy to
replace the existing departments in the hospital. The Lab used new Herman Miller systems furniture and a
new Beckman Coulter Power Processing line attached to a Beckman Coulter DxI 800 and a Beckman Coulter
AU5812 analyzer to process their over 600,000 tests/yr. The Pharmacy provided a much larger and efficient
space including a compounding room and utilized R.C. Smith Modular Casework Systems furniture.
Both projects were constructed by Meyer Najem.
