welcomed into its new home at The
Church of St. Bernard. During the year
2012 this image of Nuestra Señora de
Altagracia is being displayed in the
main display case in the Church vestibule.
El domingo, una nueva imagen de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia fue bendecida
y se le dio la bienvenida a su nuevo hogar
en la Iglesia de San Bernardo. Durante el
año 2012 la imagen de Nuestra Señora de
Altagracia estará expuesta en la vitrina
principal en el vestíbulo de la Iglesia.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
WOE IS ME
Often we think about the
troubles in our lives and cry
out, ““Woe is me!”” Like Job
we might look around in
despair at the misery in the
world. Like Job’’s friends we
might look backward for
something or someone on which to blame our suffering.
We may decide that God——or we ourselves——must be to
blame.
The Gospel today offers a different perspective from which
to view earthly suffering. Jesus realized that there was
nothing to be gained from looking around in despair or
backward in blame. Instead, he looked forward in hope. He
did not blame the sick and the possessed for their suffering, as many others did. And he did not give up hope, even
though he knew he couldn’’t cure all the sickness in the
world. Jesus tried neither to eliminate human suffering nor
to explain it. He simply did what good he could do in the
time that he had.
WOE TO ME IF I DO NOT PREACH IT!
Above all, Jesus kept preaching the good news of the reign
of God, a spiritual reality that triumphs over every form of
suffering. This was his purpose. When we believe in this
good news we may not be healed of physical illness or
understand the reason for human suffering, but we do receive something much more valuable. We are healed of the
sickness of despair and freed from the demons of guilt
and blame. The Spirit energizes us to do what good we can
do in the time that we have. With Paul we will want everyone to know about the healing, liberating reign of God. We
might even begin to say, ““Woe to me if I do not preach”” the
gospel!
Today’’s Scriptures encourage us to look forward in hope, to
do what we can, and to preach the good news of the reign
of God.

¡AY DE MÍ!
Con frecuencia pensamos en
los problemas en nuestra
vida y clamamos: ““¡Ay de
mí!”” Como Job podemos
mirar a nuestro derredor con
desesperación al contemplar
la miseria del mundo. Como
los amigos de Job, podemos
mirar hacia atrás buscando algo o a alguien a quien culpar
por nuestros sufrimientos. Podemos decidir que Dios, o
nosotros mismos, somos los culpables.
El Evangelio de hoy nos ofrece una perspectiva
diferente de nuestros sufrimientos terrenales. Jesús comprendió que no ganaba nada mirando a su alrededor en
desesperación o hacia el pasado buscando a quien culpar.
En cambio, miró hacia adelante lleno de esperanza. Él no
culpó al enfermo ni al poseído por sus sufrimientos, como
hicieron muchos otros. Y él no perdió la esperanza, aunque
sabía que no podía curar todas las enfermedades del
mundo. Jesús ni trató de eliminar el sufrimiento humano ni
de explicarlo. Simplemente hizo el bien que pudo en el
tiempo que tuvo.
¡AY DE MÍ SI NO LO PREDICO!
Por sobre todo, Jesús se mantuvo predicando la Buena
Nueva del Reino de Dios, una realidad espiritual que triunfa sobre cualquier sufrimiento. Éste fue su propósito.
Cuando creemos en esta buena noticia podemos no ser
curados de una enfermedad física o no entender la razón
del sufrimiento humano, pero recibimos algo mucho más
valioso. Somos sanados de la enfermedad de la desesperación y liberados de los demonios de la culpabilidad y del
remordimiento. El Espíritu nos da la energía para hacer
tanto bien como podemos en el tiempo que tenemos. Como
Pablo queremos que todos conozcan el poder sanador y
liberador del Reino de Dios. Hasta podríamos comenzar a
decir ““¡Ay de mí si no predico”” el Evangelio!
Las Sagradas Escrituras hoy nos animan a mirar hacia adelante con esperanza, a hacer lo que podemos, y a predicar
la buena nueva del reino de Dios.

The Origins of Nuestra
Señora de La Altagracia
The Image of Nuestra Senora de La
Altagracia describes the birth of Our
Lord Jesus: at the center is the
Blessed Virgin Mary sweetly looking
at baby Jesus and she is covered by
a blue robe filled with stars. She is
also wearing a golden crown, which
was added later, while Saint Joseph looks from afar.
There are many accounts surrounding the origins of the Image
of Nuestra Senora de La Altagracia. Some accounts claim that
the image dates back to the time when Spain first colonized the
island of Hispanola in the 16th century. Other accounts link the
devotion to the 17th century following the Dominican victory
over the French in the Battle in La Limonade. Over the centuries, several images of Nuestra Senora de La Altagracia have
been painted. The painting shown here is found in the Basilica
in Higuey. This image is said to have been painted in the late
15th century in Spain. Some people say it was mysteriously
delivered by a shrouded old man who dropped the painting and
disappeared.
Another very popular tale describes a sick child who was visited by the Virgin Mary near an orange tree that was located
where the Basilica is located today. According to this legend
the portrait mysteriously appeared under the tree and the child
took it to her home. Every morning the painting disappeared
from the child’’s house and appeared by the orange tree. These
mysterious events eventually led to the the Basilica of Nuestra
Senora de La Altagracia being built at its present day location.
Another legend talks about a merchant whose daughter wanted
a painting of Nuestra Senora de La Altagracia. In his trip to
Santo Domingo, the father did everything he could to find the
painting, but no one knew anything about it. He returned to
Higuey and spent the night at a friend’’s house. He shared with
his friend the frustration he felt since he couldn’’t find the
painting for his daughter when an old man walking by overheard him. The man took out a portrait which was exactly what
the merchant was looking for. In gratitude the merchant and
his friend gave the old man a place to stay for the night. Once
the morning arrived the man was long gone to never be seen
again. The merchant gave the portrait to his daughter and she
put it on a wall. The portrait disappeared and reappeared outside every day until finally they decided to give it to a church.
January 21st of every year is the day on which Dominicans celebrate their devotion to Our Lady of Altagracia. On Sunday,
January 22, 2012, the Church of St. Bernard welcomed a new
image of Our Lady of Altagracia at the 12:00 Mass. Throughout
the year 2012 this image will be displayed in the main display
case in the vestibule.
Los Orígenes de Nuestra Señora
de La Altagracia
La imagen de Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia describe el nacimiento de nuestro Señor
Jesucristo: en el centro se encuentra la Bienaventurada Virgen María mirando dulcemente al bebé Jesús y ella está cubierta por un
manto azul lleno de estrellas. Ella también
lleva una corona de oro, la cual se agregó
más tarde, mientras que San José mira desde lejos.
Hay muchos relatos que rodean el origen de la imagen de Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia. Algunos autores señalan que la imagen se remonta a la época cuando España primero colonizó la Isla
de la Española en el siglo 16. Otros relatos vinculan la devoción
al siglo 17 tras la victoria Dominicana sobre los franceses en la
Batalla de Limonade. A lo largo de los siglos, varias imágenes de
Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia han sido pintadas. La pintura
que se muestra a continuación se encuentra en la Basílica de
Higuey. Esta imagen se dice que fue pintada en el siglo XV en
España. Algunas personas dicen que esta fue misteriosamente
entregada por un encapuchado anciano, que abandonó la pintura
y desapareció.
Otra leyenda muy popular describe a una niña enferma que fue
visitada por la Virgen María, cerca de un árbol de Naranjo que
estaba ubicado, donde la Basílica se encuentra hoy. De acuerdo
con esta leyenda el retrato apareció misteriosamente bajo el
árbol y la niña lo llevó a su casa. Cada mañana la pintura desaparecía de la casa de la niña y aparecía por el árbol de Naranjo.
Estos eventos misteriosos condujeron eventualmente a que la
Basílica de Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia este construida en su
ubicación actual.
Otra leyenda habla de un comerciante cuya hija quería una pintura de Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia. En su viaje a Santo Domingo, el padre hizo todo lo que pudo por encontrar la pintura, pero
nadie sabía nada al respecto. Regresó a Higuey y pasó la noche
en casa de un amigo. Compartía con su amigo la frustración que
sentía ya que él no pudo encontrar la pintura a su hija, cuando un
anciano al pasar escucha lo que compartía con su amigo, el hombre sacó un retrato que era exactamente lo que estaba buscando
el comerciante. En agradecimiento al comerciante y su amigo le
dieron al anciano un lugar para quedarse durante la noche. Una
vez que llegó la mañana el hombre había desaparecido para nunca más volver. El comerciante le dio el retrato a su hija y ella lo
puso en una pared. El retrato desaparecía y reaparecía afuera
todos los días hasta que finalmente decidieron darlo a la iglesia.
Anualmente, enero 21st es el día en que los dominicanos celebran
su devoción por Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia. El domingo, 22
de enero del 2012, la Iglesia de San Bernardo le dio la bienvenida
a una nueva imagen de Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia en la
misa de las 12:00. A lo largo del año 2012 esta imagen estará
expuesta en la vitrina principal del vestíbulo.

your letter, please fill out your pledge card and send it

World Marriage Day
Sunday, February 12th is World Marriage Day. World
Marriage Day honors husband and wife as head of the family,
which is the foundational unit of society. It salutes the beauty,
faithfulness, sacrifice and joy that husbands and wives experience in daily married life. At the 10:30 am and 12:00 pm
Masses there will be a special blessing for all married
couples of our parish. Then, following the 12:00 pm
Mass there will be a reception in Chapel Hall that will
include light refreshments. If you are able to bring a light
dish or a dessert please contact Sidia Cortes at 5892990.
Ladies of Charity
The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, February
7th, in Chapel Hall following the 9:00am Communion
Service.
Little Disciple Learning Center News:
Blasting Off to Our Solar System

Recently, the Little Disciples in Ms.
Lisa’’s class have been learning all
about our Solar System. The children’’s
interests sparked when they began
discussing planet Earth and continued
while learning about our entire Solar
System. The children learned all about the planets in the sky
this previous week at the center and will continue to learn
about outer space and stars this coming week.
During the week, the children learned that Earth is our planet
and it is special for many reasons. The children, along with
their teachers, discussed how God was so good to us by giving
us Earth to live on and that we can thank God for this gift by
taking care of our wonderful planet. Our Little Disciples spoke
about how putting garbage where it belongs is important; we
also discussed how planting flowers can help planet Earth.
As a class, we also spoke about how
Jesus loved the earth and how he enjoyed taking many journeys walking
from town to town. We discussed how
Jesus lived near a lake and a river and
how he liked to go up to the mountains
to pray. As a class we used our imagination to climb a mountain and then
said a prayer to God thanking him for
the great gift of planet Earth.

Parish Recipe For The Week:
Fettucine Alfredo
1 pkg. Fettucine noddles,
10-12oz
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 cup grated Parmesan
cheese
Cook noodles in plenty of water. Boil rapidly until tender. Drain well, do not rinse. Melt the butter. Whip the
cream until thickened but not at all stiff. Stir in 1/2 cup
grated cheese. Have a large, warm platter ready. Pour
the cheese and cream them well so that they are coated
thoroughly with the cream mixture. Sprinkle with the
remaining cheese. Serves 6.

Día Mundial del Matrimonio
El domingo, 12 de febrero es el Día Mundial del Matrimonio. El día Mundial del Matrimonio honra al esposo y esposa como cabeza de familia, que son la unidad fundamental de la sociedad. En él se saluda la belleza, la fidelidad, el sacrificio y la alegría que los esposos y esposas experimentan en la vida cotidiana matrimonial. En las misas
de 10:30 am y 12:00 pm habrá una bendición especial para todos los matrimonios de nuestra parroquia. Entonces,

en el ““Chapel Hall””, que incluirá refrigerios ligeros. Si a

Receta de la Semana:
Tallarines Fettucine
1 paquete. Tallarines Fettuci- 1/2 taza de crema espesa
ne 10-12 oz
1 taza de queso parmesano
1/2 taza de mantequilla
rallado
Cocine los tallarines en abundante agua. Hierva rápidamente hasta que estén tiernos. Escurrir bien, no enjuague. Derretir la mantequilla. Batir la crema hasta que espese pero no del todo rígido. Revuelva en 1/2 taza de
queso rallado. Tenga listo un plato grande, caliente. Vierta
el queso y la crema bien para qué estén recubiertos completamente con la mezcla de crema. Polvorear con el queso restante. Rinde 6 porciones.

Despegando hacia Nuestro Sistema Solar

Recientemente, los Pequeños Discípulos, en la
clase de la Srita. Lisa han estado aprendiendo
todo acerca de nuestro Sistema Solar. El interés de los niños despertó cuando se empezó
a discutir el planeta Tierra y continuó mientras aprendían acerca de nuestro Sistema Solar. Los niños en el Centro, esta previa semana, aprendieron todo acerca de los planetas en el cielo y continuarán
aprendiendo sobre el espacio exterior y las estrellas en la
semana que viene.
Durante la semana, los niños aprendieron que la Tierra es
nuestro planeta y que es especial por muchas razones. Los
niños, junto con sus profesores, discutieron cómo Dios fue
tan bueno con nosotros, dándonos el planeta Tierra para
vivir y que podemos dar gracias a Dios por este don, cuidando de nuestro maravilloso planeta. Nuestros Pequeños
Discípulos hablaron acerca de lo importante que es poner
la basura donde corresponde; también hablamos de cómo
el plantar flores puede ayudar al planeta Tierra.
En la clase, también hablamos acerca de cómo Jesús amó
a la tierra y cómo le gustaba hacer muchas jornadas, a pie,
de pueblo en pueblo. Vimos cómo Jesús vivió cerca de un
lago y un río y cómo le gustaba ir a la montaña para orar.
En clase usamos nuestra imaginación para escalar una
montaña e hicimos una oración a Dios dándole gracias por
el gran don del planeta Tierra.

CURSO PREPARATORIO PARA EL EXAMEN DE CIUDADANIA
The Welcome Center at Westchester Community College presents a
new FREE course:
Dates: 7 Wednesdays, Feb. 1 –– March 21
Time: 6:30 p.m. –– 9:30 p.m.
Dates: 7 Fridays, Feb.3 –– March 23
Time: 9:30 a.m. –– 12:30 p.m.
Location: The Gateway Center, Room 110
Westchester Community College

Cost: $35(Plus $8 FSA fee)

Registration must be done in advance.
Designed for English Language Learners whose English is at least at a
high-beginning level (ELI Level 3+). Students will learn about American
history and government as they prepare for the civics portion of the
U.S. Citizenship exam. Additionally, students will practice their English
language skills as they prepare for the reading, writing, and speaking
portions of the exam. By the end of the course, students will be familiar
with the structure of the Citizenship interview, and will be more prepared for the civics and English portions of the exam.

Este curso ha sido diseñado para estudiantes de inglés con un nivel de
principiantes avanzado. Los estudiantes aprenderán sobre la historia y
el gobierno de los Estados Unidos para que así se preparen para la
sección de cívica del examen. Además practicarán sus destrezas del
inglés mientras se preparan para la parte de lectura, escritura y comunicación oral del examen. Al terminar el curso, los estudiantes estarán
familiarizados con el formato de la entrevista para la ciudadanía, y
estarán mejor preparados para las secciones de inglés y de cívica del
examen.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
La Fundación Dupler y El Centro Hispano necesitan su ayuda. En estos
momentos la Fundación Dupler está recogiendo mochilas llenas de
útiles escolares para los estudiantes de Los Rincones. Los Rincones está
localizado en la Provincia Espaillat en la República Dominicana. Los
estudiantes de Los Rincones están aprendiendo en una escuela que fue
casi destruída durante el terremoto del 2008. Sólo pueden usar parte
de la única aula que tienen a causa de los daños. La escuela aún no ha
recibido ninguna ayuda del gobierno para la reconstrucción de la misma. Por favor, ayúdenos a ayudar a estos niños donando mochilas, las
cuales puede llevar al Centro Hispano de lunes a viernes de 12 del

The DUPLER Foundation and El Centro Hispano Inc. are looking for your
assistance. At the moment The DUPLER Foundation is currently collecting book bags full of supplies; for the students of Los Rincones. Los
Rincones is located in Moca, Provincia Espaillat (Dominican Republic) .The students of Los Rincones are learning in a school that was
heavily destroyed by an earthquake that hit The Dominican Republic in
2008. The students are only using half of their classroom, due to the
destruction. The school has yet to receive any government assistance
for any repairs or reconstruction. Please help and sponsor a child with
a book bag. Please bring the book bags to El Centro Hispano Monday ––

CENTRO HISPANO’’S SCOUTS TROOPS.
If you want your children to participate in cultural and social activities
