Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Fr. Mark’s Remarks
Pope Francis will declare Blessed
Teresa of Kolkata a saint at the
Vatican this weekend on Sunday,
September 4. Setting the date
concludes a long process of studying
the life and writings of the sainthood
candidate. Mother Teresa was widely known as a
living saint as she ministered to the sick and the dying
in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the world.
Although some people criticized her for not also
challenging the injustices that kept so many people so
poor and abandoned, her simple service touched the
hearts of millions of people of all faiths.
Born to an ethnic Albanian family in Skopje, in what is
now part of Macedonia, she went to India in 1929 as a
Sister of Loreto and became an Indian citizen in 1947.
She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950.
Shortly after she died in 1997, St. John Paul II waived
the usual five-year waiting period and allowed the
opening of the process to declare her sainthood. She
was beatified in 2003.
After her beatification, Missionary of Charity Father
Brian Kolodiejchuk, the postulator of her sainthood
cause, published a book of her letters, "Mother Teresa:
Come Be My Light." The letters illustrated how, for
decades, she experienced what is described as a "dark
night of the soul" in Christian spirituality; she felt that
God had abandoned her. While the letters shocked
some people, others saw them as proof of her
steadfast faith in God, which was not based on feelings
or signs that he was with her. The date chosen for her
canonization is the eve of the 19th anniversary of her
death and the date previously established at the
Vatican for the conclusion of the Year of Mercy
pilgrimage of people like her who are engaged in
works of mercy.
Have a blessed Labor Day and a great week!

“Hope in Flint Day”
September 10
Deacons from around the
Diocese of Lansing are
gathering at St. Mary’s
Church in Flint for a day of hope. St. Mary’s is
located in the northeast side of Flint and there is a
push being made to reach out to the local
community; to let them know the church is present
and available to serve, pray, and be for them. The
day will consist of adoration, reconciliation, food,
games for children, and walking the neighborhood
“two by two.”
Your help is needed! The hope is to give away
school supplies to the children that come to St. Mary.
Donations of pens, pencils, crayons, markers,
notebooks etc. are needed. St. Mary’s also has a food
pantry that serves the neighborhood. Nonperishable
food items and toiletries are needed. Look for the
blue tub in church that says “Day of Hope in Flint.”
Please fill this box with your generosity.
More importantly, though, we need people to
come to Flint and pray. Please bring your youth
group, your bible study group, your prayer team,
your family, you. Come pray a rosary outside in the
parking lot, host your bible study group in the
outdoors. Come be a visible, living sign that the
Church is alive. This is HOPE. Eucharistic Adoration
will be from 10:00am-4:00pm, Bishop Boyea will
celebrate Mass at 4:30pm. All are welcome!!
Would You Walk With Someone
On Their Faith Journey?
Some of the people in the RCIA process have asked
that the parish provide them with a sponsor. An
RCIA sponsor walks with the candidate on his/her
journey of faith. The sponsor tries to attend the
RCIA sessions with their candidate. They are a
friendly presence helping their candidate begin to
become familiar with some of the beliefs and practices
of the Catholic faith. Sponsors answer basic questions
and offer encouragement.
If you would be willing or would like to find out more
about this role, give Pete Ries a call at 517-351-5460,
ext. 1328 or e-mail [email protected]. You will
2 find this to be a faith-filled experience.

Couples Prayer Series
Begins September 21
Married Couples—Experience the
power and joy of praying together!
Praying together will improve your
marriage! Marriage is a relationship of
three persons—the man, the woman and
Jesus. We build a relationship by taking
the time to get to know each other. Since Jesus is
the person in the center of a Catholic Christian
marriage, it makes sense that praying together will
strengthen your marriage relationship. The Couples
Prayer Series will guide you in experiencing firsthand the joy and the fruit of praying together in ways
that dramatically will enhance your faith, your
marriage, and your family life. No previous
experience required!
Join us on six consecutive Wednesday evenings
beginning September 21 through October 26. The
sessions will begin at 6:30pm and end promptly at
8:30pm in Fr. Mac Hall at STA. Child care will be
provided. There is a suggested donation of $20/
couple to cover the cost of materials.
Registration for the Couple Prayer Series is online at
www.elcatholics.org/marriage-enrichment-opportunities
or contact Dian Silvey in the Catholic Formation
Office at 517-351-5460.
Program Begins September 18
“Love your neighbor as yourself” is the great
commandment. But, in my busy life, who really is my
neighbor and what does my faith say I should do for
my neighbor? JustFaith is an intensive 24-week
program that helps to answer these questions
through reflection, study, prayer, guest speakers,
DVD’s, prayer and community.
A new JustFaith group is forming to begin in
September! We will be meeting on Sunday
afternoons, from 4:15-6:15pm, in the Fireplace
Room of the former STA rectory beginning on
Sunday September 18. If you are interested in
joining or want more information, please contact
Paul Charette at [email protected] or Al in the
formation office at 351-5460.

There is renewed interest in Christian Meditation.
The practice has a long history sustained by the
monastic tradition, beginning with Jesus when He said,
"Go into your inner room, close the door, and pray
to your Father Who is in secret." (Mt 6:6)
St. John Prayer Group invites you to learn more about
this Christian practice of silence, which may lead to an
ultimate and intimate relationship with the Divine.
Join us for a Contemplative Prayer/Centering Prayer
Welcome and Orientation and stay for a bite of
pizza on Monday, September 12. For more
information contact Vince at [email protected].
Attention: to those who would
like to serve prisoners:
Ingham County Jail is in need of men and women who
will help with office work and/or taking a library cart
to the inmates on their respective posts. There is
some contact with inmates as they select books, but
no contact in the office.
We need representatives of the EL Catholic
community. It is a way to evangelize inmates and
personnel at the Ingham County Jail.
Please pray for an open heart to this service. If
interested please contact Denise at
[email protected].
Prayers for the
Sick & Deceased
Please pray for the sick and the
homebound, especially Bea Mangino, Pat
Ross, Kenton Kurth, and those listed in
our Book of Prayer.
We pray that our beloved departed may be added to
the spirits of the righteous made perfect. We
remember those killed through the violence of nature
or by human hands, and for Tom Jones and Kay
7 Tucker.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Faith Sharing Questions For Next Sunday:
We invite you to prepare for next Sunday’s liturgy
(September 11) by reflecting on the Gospel reading:
Do You Know Someone
Interested In Learning About the
Catholic Church?
If you do, pass this information on to
them and extend a gentle invitation. A
new group of inquirers will begin meeting Tuesday,
September 13, 7:00 - 9:00pm and Sunday, September
18, 2:00 - 4:00pm., both at St. John Church and
Student Center, downstairs in Room 25B or Room
25A, the coffee shop. Individuals choose the time
which best suits their schedules. The sessions will
consider topics such as "is there a God?", "how can I
have a relationship with God?", "how do Catholics use
the bible?", "why is Mary so important to Catholics?",
"who are the saints?", etc.
Luke 15:1–32
“There will be more joy in heaven
over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine
righteous people.”

When have I felt mentally, emotionally, or
spiritually lost?
 What is the deepest hurt you have forgiven—or
need to forgive?
 What stifles it?
For Further Reflection

You are welcome to attend with a friend or to come
alone. Participants include undergraduate and
graduate students, year-round East Lansing and area
residents -- people of various ages. The sessions
stress answers to your questions, conversation, and
hospitality. If you or someone you know has been
thinking about learning more about the Catholic
Church, call Pete Ries at 517-351-5460, ext. 1328 or

St. Vincent DePaul
In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays out the
demands of following him, the great cost of
discipleship. The Mission Statement of the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul states:
“Vincentians witness God’s love by embracing
all works of charity and justice…the Society makes no
distinction in those served because, in them, Vincentians
see the face of Christ.” Have you considered answering
the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society
of St. Vincent de Paul?
Heavenly Father, you blessed
Saint Teresa of Calcutta
with a love of the poor and dying,
and an unswerving commitment to
serving those who were overlooked
by society.
Even in her darkest moments,
she remained true to you and to
your call.
May her example inspire us to follow you more closely;
to reach out to those who are the outcast among us;
and to remember that, in serving them,
we are serving you.
Help us to say, as Saint Teresa did,
“ . . . As to my calling, I belong to the world.
As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus.”
Thank You from the Knights!
The Knights of Columbus would like to
thank everyone that attended and
supported our annual Parish Picnic. In particular, they
would like to thank Marty and Mary Ellen Dolan, as
well as Ben Williams, for providing their tents. In
addition, they would like to thank Bill Purosky for the
generous use of his event grill, and the Rosary Altar
Society for again providing the cookies.
We hope to see everyone again next year.
Copies of this holy card are available in the
formation racks in the back of Church.
