Mark’s Remarks Pope Francis will declare Blessed Teresa of Kolkata a saint at the Vatican this weekend on Sunday, September 4. Setting the date concludes a long process of studying the life and writings of the sainthood candidate. Mother Teresa was widely known as a living saint as she ministered to the sick and the dying in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the world. Although some people criticized her for not also challenging the injustices that kept so many people so poor and abandoned, her simple service touched the hearts of millions of people of all faiths. Born to an ethnic Albanian family in Skopje, in what is now part of Macedonia, she went to India in 1929 as a Sister of Loreto and became an Indian citizen in 1947. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. Shortly after she died in 1997, St. John Paul II waived the usual five-year waiting period and allowed the opening of the process to declare her sainthood. She was beatified in 2003. After her beatification, Missionary of Charity Father Brian Kolodiejchuk, the postulator of her sainthood cause, published a book of her letters, "Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light." The letters illustrated how, for decades, she experienced what is described as a "dark night of the soul" in Christian spirituality; she felt that God had abandoned her. While the letters shocked some people, others saw them as proof of her steadfast faith in God, which was not based on feelings or signs that he was with her. The date chosen for her canonization is the eve of the 19th anniversary of her death and the date previously established at the Vatican for the conclusion of the Year of Mercy pilgrimage of people like her who are engaged in works of mercy. Have a blessed Labor Day and a great week! K of C Pancake Breakfast Returns Next Sunday, September 11 in the STA gym from 10am-1PM September 4 , 2016 “Hope in Flint Day” September 10 Deacons from around the Diocese of Lansing are gathering at St. Mary’s Church in Flint for a day of hope. St. Mary’s is located in the northeast side of Flint and there is a push being made to reach out to the local community; to let them know the church is present and available to serve, pray, and be for them. The day will consist of adoration, reconciliation, food, games for children, and walking the neighborhood “two by two.” Your help is needed! The hope is to give away school supplies to the children that come to St. Mary. Donations of pens, pencils, crayons, markers, notebooks etc. are needed. St. Mary’s also has a food pantry that serves the neighborhood. Nonperishable food items and toiletries are needed. Look for the blue tub in church that says “Day of Hope in Flint.” Please fill this box with your generosity. More importantly, though, we need people to come to Flint and pray. Please bring your youth group, your bible study group, your prayer team, your family, you. Come pray a rosary outside in the parking lot, host your bible study group in the outdoors. Come be a visible, living sign that the Church is alive. This is HOPE. Eucharistic Adoration will be from 10:00am-4:00pm, Bishop Boyea will celebrate Mass at 4:30pm. All are welcome!! Would You Walk With Someone On Their Faith Journey? Some of the people in the RCIA process have asked that the parish provide them with a sponsor. An RCIA sponsor walks with the candidate on his/her journey of faith. The sponsor tries to attend the RCIA sessions with their candidate. They are a friendly presence helping their candidate begin to become familiar with some of the beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith. Sponsors answer basic questions and offer encouragement. If you would be willing or would like to find out more about this role, give Pete Ries a call at 517-351-5460, ext. 1328 or e-mail [email protected]. You will 2 find this to be a faith-filled experience. JustFaith is an intensive 24-week program that helps to answer these questions through reflection, study, prayer, guest speakers, DVD’s, prayer and community. A new JustFaith group is forming to begin in September! We will be meeting on Sunday afternoons, from 4:15-6:15pm, in the Fireplace Room of the former STA rectory beginning on Sunday September 18. The practice has a long history sustained by the monastic tradition, beginning with Jesus when He said, "Go into your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father Who is in secret." (Mt 6:6) St. John Prayer Group invites you to learn more about this Christian practice of silence, which may lead to an ultimate and intimate relationship with the Divine. Join us for a Contemplative Prayer/Centering Prayer Welcome and Orientation and stay for a bite of pizza on Monday, September 12. For more information contact Vince at [email protected]. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Faith Sharing Questions For Next Sunday: We invite you to prepare for next Sunday’s liturgy (September 11) by reflecting on the Gospel reading: Do You Know Someone Interested In Learning About the Catholic Church? If you do, pass this information on to them and extend a gentle invitation. A new group of inquirers will begin meeting Tuesday, September 13, 7:00 - 9:00pm and Sunday, September 18, 2:00 - 4:00pm., both at St. John Church and Student Center, downstairs in Room 25B or Room 25A, the coffee shop. Individuals choose the time which best suits their schedules. The sessions will consider topics such as "is there a God?", "how can I have a relationship with God?", "how do Catholics use the bible?", "why is Mary so important to Catholics?", "who are the saints?", etc. Luke 15:1–32 “There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people.” When have I felt mentally, emotionally, or spiritually lost? What is the deepest hurt you have forgiven—or need to forgive? What stifles it? For Further Reflection “Bringing Home the Word” is a monthly newsletter subscribed to by our parish offering reflections on the Sunday readings. You can access and download it from our parish website (www.elcatholics.org) on the Adult Faith Formation page, or we are happy to email it to you monthly upon request. (Contact Al at [email protected].) You are welcome to attend with a friend or to come alone. Participants include undergraduate and graduate students, year-round East Lansing and area residents -- people of various ages. The sessions stress answers to your questions, conversation, and hospitality. If you or someone you know has been thinking about learning more about the Catholic Church, call Pete Ries at 517-351-5460, ext. 1328 or e-mail [email protected]. Opening the Word is a video program offering prayer and insights on the Sunday Scriptures and is available through FORMED, to which our parish has subscribed. You can access it by registering at FORMED.org and using our parish access code: 07838b. Enjoy this video program, and many more wonderful resources at FORMED.org! St. Vincent DePaul In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays out the demands of following him, the great cost of discipleship. The Mission Statement of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul states: “Vincentians witness God’s love by embracing all works of charity and justice…the Society makes no distinction in those served because, in them, Vincentians see the face of Christ.” Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Heavenly Father, you blessed Saint Teresa of Calcutta with a love of the poor and dying, and an unswerving commitment to serving those who were overlooked by society. Even in her darkest moments, she remained true to you and to your call. May her example inspire us to follow you more closely; to reach out to those who are the outcast among us; and to remember that, in serving them, we are serving you. Help us to say, as Saint Teresa did, “ . . . As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus.” Thank You from the Knights! The Knights of Columbus would like to thank everyone that attended and supported our annual Parish Picnic. In particular, they would like to thank Marty and Mary Ellen Dolan, as well as Ben Williams, for providing their tents. In addition, they would like to thank Bill Purosky for the generous use of his event grill, and the Rosary Altar Society for again providing the cookies. We hope to see everyone again next year. Copies of this holy card are available in the formation racks in the back of Church. 8 Events In our Parish Mass Intentions Monday, September 5, 2016 Labor Day - Parish Offices Closed Tuesday, September 6, 2016 10:00am Faith Sharing Group (STA) 7:00pm Quest Group (SJSC) Wednesday, September 7, 2016 6:00pm Bereavement Support Group (STA) 7:00pm Korean Prayer Group (STA) 7:00pm St. Vincent DePaul Meeting (STA) Thursday, September 8, 2016 5:30pm Faculty/Community Book Discussion (STA) 6:30pm STA Contemporary Ensemble (STA) 7:00pm SJSC Music Ensemble (SJSC) 7:30pm STA Adult Choir (STA) Friday, September 9, 2016 12:30pm American Guild of Organists (STA) Saturday, September 10, 2016 9:00am Food Cupboard Opens (SJSC) Sunday, September 11, 2016 8:00am Welcome Sunday Ministry Fair (SJSC) 9:00am Children’s Liturgy of the Word (STA) 10:00am STA Adult Choir (STA) 10:00am K of C Pancake Breakfast (STA) 11:00am RCIA (SJSC) 1:00pm Troop 293 Boy Scouts (STA) 1:00pm Youth Leader Training (STA) 2:00pm Theological Training (SJSC) 3:00pm ESTEEM (SJSC) 3:50pm Korean Community Mass (STA) 4:30pm “Unlocking the Mystery of the Church” (STA) Monday, September 5, 2016 9:00am (St. Thomas Aquinas) Int. of Fr.
