St. Aloysius to Rock the Decades
Vol. 29 No. 2 September-October 2013 St. Aloysius to Rock the Decades Parish Fair promises to be bigger, better Preparations are underway for the 2013 St. Aloysius Parish Fair – “St. Aloysius Rocks the Decades,” a weekend of music and fun presented by McDonald’s Valluzzo Family Restaurants that promises to be bigger and better than ever. The fair will be Friday, Nov. 15, to Sunday, Nov. 17, and in keeping with its musical theme, this year’s parish fair will feature an all-star lineup of well-known bands that were selected because of their appeal to a wide variety of listeners. “Everybody loves the fair,” says Chris Adams, who is co-chairing the fair with his wife, Rory. “But we want the community — even those who do not have children at St. Aloysius — to come out and really enjoy the fair. That’s why LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri reads to children, one of several exciting recent events at the Childcare Center. This fair is going to rock.” Kicking off the weekend Friday night is The V-Tones Live, the perennially popular variety band, followed by country-hits act The Todd O’Neill Band. On Saturday, the musical showcase resumes with the ‘80s cover band Werewolf, ‘90s cover band The Loose Endz, and Continued on page 3 Kelly Lopex inputs stewardship forms into the new online Trevor Sims, creator of the City-Wide Food Drive for the system during the Ministry Fair, along with Alvin Raetsch Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, fires up fourth-graders during a visit to St. Aloysius. The evening ends with a smattering of disco and retro favorites from the ‘70s. On Sunday, Baton Rouge Music Studios wraps up the live performances with hits from the 2000s. “We’re really excited to be bringing such a fun lineup to our fairgoers,” Rory Adams said. “We want everyone to bring their tailgate chairs and plan to spend the weekend enjoying great music and delicious food.” All-star entertainment will be just one of the new additions to this year’s fair. Another is the change of date and venue for the St. Aloysius Auction, which will be held two weeks before the fair, on Friday, Nov. 1, at L’Auberge Casino Hotel. The timely theme — A Celebration of All Saints — will feature a live and silent auction, complimentary food and beverages from some of the area’s finest restaurants and an upscale venue with an inviting atmosphere. “We want parishioners to mark their calendars for this really special event,” auction chair Eva Ventress said. “It’s going to be so nice and so different. Everyone will want to be there and will want to invite friends and neighbors to join them.” Besides bands and a new auction venue, this year’s fair will feature several other new attractions, including a Chili Cook-Off, which will be on Saturday and is open to any and all ambitious home cooks and amateur chefs. Contestants will prepare their chili on site, and judging will take place that afternoon by a panel of local celebrities and community members. The contest will be held on the playground, and fair goers will be able to sample the entries for themselves. Another new feature of the 2013 fair will be a Children’s PlayZone, with space walks for younger kids, slides and other inflatables for older kids, and a photo booth for children of all ages. Also new this year will be a special slow-cooked barbecue dish prepared by parishioner Mo Harmon and available on Friday night only, in addition to the much-beloved fish fry. On Saturday, Chef Mo will prepare his version of gumbo. Only a limited supply will be cooked and sold. A new adults-only beverage station will also make it easier for fair goers to enjoy food and drinks without long lines and congestion. Of course, the fair will continue to feature games, rides, talent show, bingo and many other traditional offerings that have always drawn crowds. The idea is not to take any of that away but to add new attractions that will make the fair even more fun for more people. “The fair gets better and better every year,” Chris Adams said. “We think this one will be the best yet.” Nov. 15 – 17, 2013 Place on-line orders for all St. Aloysius Parish Fair activities: Committee Co-Chairs Needed Food and games T-Shirts Rides Raffle Fish Fry Dinner Auction Talent Show BBQ Chicken Lunch Fun Run Information about the Fair, Auction and the online Fair/Auction pre-order system can be found at www.aloysiusfair.org One stop for ordering and paying for Fair/Auction orders Online System opens on Sept. 30, 2013 Just follow the online system to order all fair items Pay at the end through a secure system operated by PayPal September-October 2013, ALOYSIUS ALIVE, page 3 St. Aloysius Rocks the Decades ST. By Jenny Bonaventure Summer has come to a close and the new school year has begun. With the close of summer comes the end of the St. Aloysius summer camp. Children ages 3-10 enjoyed a summer full of activities. Music and movement, karate lessons, soccer instruction and visits from the snowball truck made for a fun, relaxing summer. Be on the lookout for registration information in the spring to sign your child up for summer camp 2014. The Childcare Center is busy getting ready for fall festivities, including the Annual Pumpkin Carving Party and the Thanksgiving celebration. Certain images are synonymous with fall -- changing leaves, cooler temperatures and most importantly….football! Don’t let their sizes fool you, the children at the center are big fans and celebrated the first football kickoff weekend with a “support your team” theme Page 10, September-October 2013, ALOYSIUS ALIVE dress day. Geaux Tigers and Saints! Fall also reminds us to give thanks, especially for the important people in our lives such as grandparents. On Sept. 6, SACCC hosted its first “Grandparents Day,” where all grandparents (or honorary members) were invited to share cookies and lemonade and spend quality time coloring and reading with their children at the center. It was a huge success, and we thank all dedicated relatives who attended the event. In conjunction with the parish’s Stewardship of Ministry campaign, it is also time to volunteer for SACCC committees. Roster lists have gone out, and parents have the opportunity to volunteer for one of five committees. Parental Involvement, Communications, We l c o m i n g / H o s p i t a l i t y, Facilities, and Development involvement are some of the ways parents can help enhance the experience the children receive at the center. Doing his part to enhance the experience, LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri graciously took time out of his busy schedule Aug. 29 to read to the 2- and 3-year-olds. Thank you to all the parents (and grandparents) who generously lend their time and talents to SACCC! Together, we are working on another successful year. There is more to come from these cute tots as SACCC gets ready for Fall. Summer Camp September-October 2013, ALOYSIUS ALIVE, page 11 Trevor’s Wish: To Feed the Hungry By: Patience Appleton The fourth-graders at St. Aloysius School began their community service project with the goal of helping the people of Baton Rouge. They expected to learn a lesson not only of giving material things to help the needy, but also a lesson of giving their time and efforts. What they did not expect was to make a new friend and learn a valuable lesson about life. When the fourth-grade class heard of Trevor’s Wish to Feed the Hungry, they knew they had to help with Trevor’s City-Wide Food Drive for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Trevor Sims is a 10-year-old boy who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He knows what it is like to go hungry, and he made it his wish to feed the hungry. Trevor heard that the St. Aloysius fourthgraders had worked together to honor his wish by collecting barrels of food for his city-wide food drive. The boys and girls of St. Aloysius School were excited to meet him. When Trevor paid a visit to the school on Friday, Sept. 6, he met and mingled with the kids. At the end of the day, they felt proud of their accomplishment and yet humbled by Trevor’s story of bravery and kindness. A very powerful life lesson indeed!
