The Stephen leaders came back full of grace and enthusiasm and ready to train the first group of Stephen ministers. The ministers were given 50 hours of training in a collaborative effort with area Episcopal churches, which have had an established Stephen Ministry Organization for 13 years. The training included topics such as feelings, the art of listening, boundaries, confidentiality and grief, and was completed in January with a blessing and reception in the parish chapel and office. Of the ten Stephen Ministers trained, six have care receivers. Referrals coordinator Mary Morain accepts referrals from individuals, the pastoral staff and concerned parishioners who recognize the need for someone to have a Stephen minister. Having obtained the potential care receiver’s permission, Mary will visit with the individual, explain the purpose of the Stephen Ministry and get written permission from the person to be assigned a Stephen minister. She uses the referral information to match the care receiver with the personality and experience of the Stephen minister. If you know of someone who is experiencing difficulty coping with a problem such as a loss of a family member, illness, loss of a job, divorce or any situation that is causing difficulty in coping, and could benefit from having someone walk with him/her in a confidential, Christian, caring manner, ask that person’s permission to contact Mary Morain at 225-931-5839. One of the major challenges in our ministry is having men come forward to request a care receiver. Men are often conditioned to be strong and self-reliant, so they put a wall around themselves and don’t talk about what’s going on inside. Or, they may be a fix-it kind of person. They do the fixing and don’t think they are the ones who need fixing. Stephen Ministers are not there to fix. One of the things awareness building coordinator Robert Miller admitted after a week at the Leadership Training Conference, is that he discovered that he learned to listen, he learned about feelings and he learned to empathize and understand what people are going through – leaving the fixing to God. And he now transfers that message when he speaks about the ministry. Supervision and continuing education coordinator Marie Hebert focuses on the situational difficulties expressed by the Stephen ministers in their peer review conferences to select speakers and/or topics for continuing education. The peer review hap- If you want to become involved in Stephen Ministry, call the Parish Office or contact one of the Stephen leaders. pens twice a month. Names are never mentioned. The process includes progress and problems that the Stephen minister may encounter and input and support from fellow ministers. Recruitment for a new class of Stephen ministers opened in May. When the interviewing process and approval from Fr. Than is completed, the training will begin the second Monday in September, with the expected date of completion of January 2015. We expect to train at least ten more Stephen ministers in the fall session. We are also planning to send two parishioners to Dallas this summer for leadership training. Also, on Nov. 1, we are co-hosting with the Episcopal churches an informational Stephen Ministry half-day workshop, organized by Stephen Ministry in St. Louis. We will be extending personal invitations to churches throughout the Baton Rouge Diocese to come learn more about Stephen Ministry and how they can become involved. If you are searching for fulfillment in your spiritual life and feel the tug from the Holy Spirit to help others by being there for them, you may be a good candidate for Stephen Ministry. Page 6, May-June 2014, ALOYSIUS ALIVE By Tiffany Meek St. Aloysius School third-grade teacher Joanna Lemoine and fourth-grade teacher Carolyn Murphy took part in this year’s Rotolo’s Pizzeria’s Homegrown Love for Mom program. The program gives customers the opportunity to recycle their Rotolo’s cups, which are then donated to schools where students plant tomatoes in them as gifts for their moms on Mother’s Day. Rotolo’s goal is to encourage recycling, gardening and healthy eating among students in the communities that they serve. Miranda and Andrew Smith, general managers of Rotolo’s Pizzeria on Perkins Road in Baton Rouge, spearheaded the task at St. Aloysius on May 9. Because the corporate office approved participation for all eight of our third- and fourth-grade homerooms, the couple was very busy assisting the students with putting the plants and soil in the recycled cups. SAS greatly appreciated the opportunity to participate in such a creative, educational and environmentally conscious program. First Communion May Crowning May-June 2014, ALOYSIUS ALIVE, page 7 Another successful Fish Fry for Childcare Center The 2014 St. Aloysius Childcare Center Fish Fry Fundraiser was a success! Parishioners, parents and friends gathered in the cafeteria for delicious fried fish, French fries and coleslaw, along with treats from the “Sweet Shop” baked with love and donated by parents and teachers. Others enjoyed their fish dinners and treats delivered through the “drive through” line from Mimosa Street. The total profit for 2014 was $15,245! These funds will assist in purchasing new equipment for the children, supporting staff in their continuing educa- tion efforts and for family and community events. This event would not be possible without the support of our many parent volunteers and the individuals and businesses who generously pledged their support with contributions and donations. Special thanks to this year’s chairwoman Tiffany Fontana, co-chairwoman Amy Brown, and all the committee members who worked diligently for months to orchestrate such a great event. Springtime brought fun events to the center! Easter was celebrated with classroom parties and Easter egg hunts! Deli- Page 8, May-June 2014, ALOYSIUS ALIVE cious treats and friendly competition rounded out the afternoon, and each child brought home a bucket of goodies to enjoy. Teachers are greatly appreciated at the Childcare Center. Parents expressed their gratitude with thoughtful expressions each day during Staff Appreciation Week. Monday included donated breakfast items, Tuesday a center-provided lunch, Wednesday a potluck lunch, Thursday flower-grams with special notes of thanks, and Friday concluded with the Spring Family Picnic. Parents were asked to join their children for hamburgers, chips and lemonade. The week was a huge success and let the teachers know just how much they are loved and appreciated. Teachers were given a special assignment. They were asked to create “prop boxes” to help challenge and encourage children’s creativity and then enter them into a contest for the most creative. Prop boxes are a way of setting the stage for meaningful, purposeful play through exploring different experiences. When setting the stage with props, children’s dramatic play will evolve naturally. Prop boxes give children a variety of experiences in language, literacy, math and science, art, social and emotion- al play. They are only limited by your imagination! Teachers filled these boxes with all kinds of wonderful materials for dramatic play and allowed the children to come up with scenarios to pretend. Pam Pennington, Shontelle Thomas, and Kori Allen won with the “Pet Vet” prop box. However, the children are clearly the winners, benefiting from teachers striving to create a fun and challenging curriculum. Goodbye spring, Hello summer! Fun and new adventures await these little ones, who really know how to have fun and stay cool. Childcare Center Family Picnic Youth Group Youth Group prepares for San Antonio, Texas, trip.
