HOLY LAUGHTER
When I hear laughter, I am always intrigued
about the reason of the laughing. Laughter is
such a beautiful, liberating sound that makes
me want to join in, and share in that joy of the
moment. It has a way of bonding people and
making some unforgettable memories that
bring joy again when remembered.
Laughter is one of the things that I love about our
church. Some people might think that laughing is irreverent, that it destroys the solemnity of our celebration.
While that may be true for misplaced occasions of
laughing, I believe that when a church is able to laugh
it out when something goes a bit septic at the liturgy, or
when a point is being made in the homily and people
are getting the image, that laughing may just be the
only holy thing to do at the moment, to show our ability
to look beyond an error in the blooper, or a funny idea
that was shared. In this case, laughter is a sacred expression, and in some special way, I want to believe
that when the Church cracks in holy laughter, God is
laughing along.
Have you ever wondered what God’s laughter might
sound like, and what feeling his holy laugh might bring
to the world? I can only imagine that as God watches
our every move and our daily idiosyncrasies, His heavenly home must be filled be holy laughter, and the angels and saints are surely laughing along.
This weekend is Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete Sunday is
the Third Sunday of Advent. (See the Liturgical Calendar for Advent to find the date of Gaudete Sunday this
year.) The Introit for Gaudete Sunday, in both the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo, is taken from
Philippians 4:4,5: "Gaudete in Domino semper" ("Rejoice in the Lord always"). So this is REJOICE Sunday. Like Lent, Advent is a penitential
season, so the priest and deacon normally wear purple
vestments. But on Gaudete Sunday, having passed
the midpoint of Advent, the Church lightens the mood a
little, and they may wear rose vestments. The change
in color provides us with encouragement to continue
our spiritual preparation for Christmas. For this same
reason, the third candle of our Advent Wreath first lit on
Gaudete Sunday, is traditionally rose-colored.
And so, Saint Teresa, my prayer for us for this Gaudete
Sunday is for us to never run out of reasons to laugh,
celebrate, rejoice and give thanks for the goodness of
the Lord. God bless our church!
In the joy of the Lord,
Fr. Sunny Castillo

Alguna vez, has deseado saber cómo se oye Dios
Iglesia!

CHRISTMAS AND YEAR END GIVING
An “Investment” in Your Parish
For many years, our Catholic parishes have
benefited from the enormous contributions and dedication of
religious men and women (priests, brothers and sisters) who
have given their entire lives in the service to parishes, schools,
dioceses and many other Church ministries.
Now, our Catholic Church and educational ministries are even
broader and serve more people than ever before despite the
decline in the numbers of religious. Many dedicated lay people
now staff these programs and must compensated with just and
living wages. Your Christmas and year end gift is an investment
in these quality programs.
The Essential Wisdom of the Saints
The practice of virtue became attractive,
And seemed to come more naturally.
At first, my face often betrayed my inward
struggle, but little by little sacrifice, even at
the first moment, became easier.

A note from your Nurse: Wholistic Parenting
Third Sunday of Advent
December 13/14
The theme of “rejoicing in the Lord”, links the Scripture passages in today’s readings. The
Book of the Prophet Isaiah states, I rejoice
heartily in the Lord, in my God is the joy
of my soul. In the Gospel, St. John the
Baptist gives witness to the Light that is
Christ, that through Him all people may believe. St.
Paul, in his First Letter to the Thessalonians, encourages us to rejoice always, never cease praying, render
constant thanks; such is God’s will for you in Christ
Jesus. How do we, as baptized stewards in the Lord,
respond in gratitude for this tremendous gift– our life in
I pray that you and your loved ones enjoy all the peace, joy, love, and wholeness that is Christmas. As we reflect on God’s
great gift of His precious Son, I would like to share some thoughts with you about wholistic parenting. Wholistic parenting focuses
on the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of children and is only possible with God’s help. Our children all have physical
needs that require our attention. To protect their health, use a child restraint system when they are passengers in a car, make
sure the home is child-proof, and keep a stocked first aid kit available. The psychosocial dimension of parenting takes time, concern, patience, and thoughtfulness every day. Specific things that can be done are: learn more about child development, use discipline as a teaching tool, be generous with love, attention, affection and praise while being cautious with discipline. Jesus sets a
wonderful example for us in the way He interacted with children. Some specific things we can do to promote our children’s spiritual dimension are: try to reflect God’s unconditional love with our children, share spiritual truths with children starting at a very
early age, and role-model to children the spiritual behaviors we would like them to have.
