Selective
Service: What
You Need To
Know
Getting the facts
may help young men
understand why it is
so important that they
register with Selective Service System.
Who Needs To Register?
All male U.S. citizens must register when they turn 18, as do
male noncitizens who take up residency in the U.S. before
their 26th birthday. That includes illegal aliens, legal permanent residents and refugees.
Why Register?
The penalties for not registering can be very serious. A man
who fails to register may, if prosecuted and convicted, face
a fine of up to $250,000 and/or a prison term of up to five
years.
Not registering can also affect your ability to go to school,
bec ome a citizen and get a job.
Failing to register can mean:
• You will not qualify for federal student loans or grant programs, including Pell Grants, College Work-Study, Guaranteed Student/Plus Loans and National Direct Student Loans.
• You cannot apply for citizenship if you arrived in the U.S.
before your 26th birthday.
• You cannot participate in the federal job-training act called
the Workforce Investment Act.
• You are not eligible for jobs in the executive branch of the
federal government and the U.S. Postal Service.
• You may not be able to get a driver’s license, as some
states require proof of registration.
Free Tax Options Save Time And Money
It’s that time of year again—time to file your taxes. And this
year, millions of Americans can file their taxes for free online or
at a low cost using their iPhone or Android smartphones.
Today, there are more free and low-cost tax preparation options available than ever before. Low-income taxpayers, filers
with simple returns, even active-duty military personnel are
among those who can benefit from free online tax preparation
and filing options.
File for Free
The IRS Free File program provides free tax preparation for
middle- and low-income taxpayers. Taxpayers with an adjusted
gross income (AGI) of $58,000 or less, about 70 percent of
all taxpayers, can get free online tax preparation and e-filing
through the Free File Alliance at www.IRS.gov.
Many tax preparation sof t ware companies of fer a free
version of their products available to consumers, regardless
of income. TurboTax has one — designed for taxpayers with
relatively straightfor ward tax returns—that guides you step
by step through your tax return and searches for all the tax
credits you’re eligible for to get you the biggest refund possible,
guaranteed.
File on Your Smartphone
Rather file your taxes on your smartphone? If you have a
1040EZ, you can file your taxes on your iPhone or Android
phone with SnapTax. All
you do is snap a photo of
your W-2 on your phone
and answer a few simple
questions. The app is free
to download in the Apple
App Store and Android
Market. You only pay the
low $14.99 introductor y
price when you’re ready
to file your return.
Understanding Your Oil Filter
What’s in an Oil Filter? There are several main components in an oil filter.
The shell is the solid material that surrounds the actual filter. It keeps your filter safe during the wear
and tear on your vehicle and protects it from punctures.
The media is the component that filters the oil. It’s a maze of cellulose, synthetics and micro-fibers that
removes harmful debris from your engine oil.
The core of the filter is inside the filter media and constructed from a variety of materials. It
helps keep the shape and prevents it from collapsing under extreme pressure.
The base plate is the threaded part of the filter. It also directs the oil flow.
The gasket is the flexible rubber ring that seals the filter to the
engine’s oil filter base.

Getting Organized Can
Save You Money
Is your life so disorganized that it’s costing you money?
If you’re like all too many Americans, you’re spending so
much time rummaging around for lost or misplaced itemswasting a combined 9 million hours a day—that you’re
probably too frazzled to even contemplate that question.
That’s a real shame because it turns out it’s not just stuff like
car keys and medicine we’re mislaying. According to Harris
Interactive, 23 percent of adults admit to paying their bills
late because they’ve lost them in what we’ll call The Great
Abyss.
And you know what happens when you don’t pay your bills
on time, right? You incur late fees—and, in the case of bank
credit cards, for example, also open yourself to sky-high
annual interest rates.
“People have to realize that being disorganized has reallife consequences,” says organizational expert Jill Pollack,
who’s been featured everywhere from WE’s “Bridezillas” to
FoxNews.com.
Time you organized
your life? Read on for
some expert tips:
• Baskets are your
new best friend. Everyone in your house
should have his or her
own decorative basket
to hold loose items. “It’s an instant declutterer,” says Pollack.
• Your second-best friend is your coding system. Alphabetizing your files—yes, you’ll need files—is apparently
so yesterday. The “more intuitive” way to go? Colors. You
know, green for financial documents, red for health matters,
and so on.
• No one should be without a “home management”
binder. Well, okay, you can probably do without it if you’re
paying someone $100,000 a year just to keep track of your
family’s schedule, emergency contact numbers and all the
rest of life’s minutiae that contribute to high stress levels.
• Stay on top of your bills. Not only do current bills rate
a file folder all their own—color code it neon green, if you
like—but you need to make a habit of going through it once
or twice a week to remit payment.
• Clear your desk. If your home’s cluttered, odds are so is
your office. Make a point to clear it before you leave at night
so you can start fresh in the morning.
Pollack has three final words of advice for pack rats who
insist on keeping every last tax return (seven years normally
suffices), every last paycheck (toss once you’ve gotten your
W-2 form) and every last credit card statement (shred immediately, after checking for accuracy, since they’re a prime
source of identity theft).
Those words?
“Purge, purge, purge.”

Protecting Your Child’s Healthy Smile
Sure, they start out all shiny and healthy, but how do you keep
your child’s teeth staying that way?
Here are some expert tips:
• Avoid the dreaded “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay.” It’s caused by
prolonged contact with almost any liquid other than plain water. (The
technical term, as the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial
Research reminds us, is “early childhood caries.”) So jot these
three no-nos down: Don’t routinely put your children to bed with a
bottle containing sweetened liquids; don’t use bottles as pacifiers;
and don’t even think about dipping pacifiers in sweetened liquids,
honey or sugar.
• A different way to mark that first birthday. It is recommended
that a child’s first visit to the dentist occur no later than the child’s first birthday.
• To wipe or not to wipe. Yes, getting your infant to eat pureed carrots can be a chore by itself, but did you know
you’re also supposed to wipe the infant’s gums and teeth after each feeding with either a clean, moist cloth or a
baby toothbrush?
• It takes two. To floss, that is. And as soon as kids have two teeth that touch, parents should clean
between them daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.
A
