ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends,
Episcopal Community Services works best when we work alongside others.
Last year, hundreds of your friends and neighbors took time out of their demanding schedules to lend a hand—
helping homeless and formerly homeless adults learn to read, providing childcare at our Canon Barcus family
housing site, accompanying our teens on summer outings, serving meals at the Sanctuary or in the Interfaith
Shelter, and working alongside our residents in their vegetable gardens. Also last year, hundreds of your friends
and neighbors dug deep—giving generously in tough economic times to ensure that our shelter and housing
residents, our seniors, and our students had the means necessary to pursue their own paths out of homelessness.
What can you do about homelessness? Alone, maybe not as much as you’d like. But, with ECS, you’re part of a
community of service. Every dollar donated is stretched to its limit so that it has the greatest impact. Every
volunteer commitment is matched by the talents and energy of others who, like you, care deeply about the people
we serve and about ending homelessness in our
community. While the task may be daunting
when pursued alone, the gains, certainly in the
individual lives of the men, women and children
whom we see at ECS 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year, are enormous.
We’re most grateful to all of you!
Building
Community
at the Mentone
Support services manager Phil Swenson likens ECS’s
Mentone Hotel to a large family. “People believe this
is their community and each of them has an impact.”
Residents Charles, Michelle, and Norbert exemplify that
spirit. Highly creative cooks, they whip up a delicious
monthly dinner, which supports the Mentone’s communitywide meeting.
“There’s an amazing spirit of cooperation,” Phil adds.
And he’s not just talking about how well people work
together in the Mentone’s tiny community kitchen.
Tenants look out for each other. If they notice that their
neighbor doesn’t look well or hasn’t emerged from his
room for a couple of days, they ask staff to check on
him. This is particularly important because two-thirds of
the Mentone’s formerly homeless residents cope with
chronic illness or behavioral health issues, and many are
elderly. Last year, the staff’s “wellness checks” saved two
people who were too sick to ask for help.
Another community-building activity is Dinner with
Grace. Four years ago, parishioners from Grace Cathedral
began preparing a dinner to share with the residents of
the Mentone. Now two or three residents regularly travel
to Grace Cathedral to help cook. In September, Mentone
residents served a “gratitude meal” for Grace volunteers.
Next, they’re planning to cook for the Bishop!

The Mentone is one of ECS’s nine housing sites, which
together provide homes to over 1,000 formerly homeless
men, women and children. At each site, we offer weekly
food pantries, employment services, case management,
health and recovery groups, and recreational activities.
With the support of these services, 95% of ECS tenants
retain housing and many contribute back to their community.

Developing Skills through CHEFS
Steve McDaniel is confident and relaxed. Sitting down
to talk with him you notice his warm smile and the light
in his eyes. Today, things are going great for Steve, but
life wasn’t always this good.
(Conquering Homelessness through
Employment in Food Services)
After years of struggling with living on the streets, Steve
found himself behind bars. He didn’t despair though;
Steve decided to make a change. Steve gave this a lot
of thought. He knew a job was critical and, as he had
always enjoyed cooking, he decided to pursue a culinary
career. Over the months Steve became more focused
and determined to reach his goal and change his life.
“I was going to succeed no matter the obstacles or the
expenses. Nothing was going to stop me.”
Shortly after his release, Steve heard about the CHEFS
program and knew it was the place for him. CHEFS is an
intensive 6-month culinary program that prepares very
low-income and formerly homeless adults for careers in
the food service industry. Dedicated instructors provide
students with the knowledge, skill and hands-on experience
necessary for success. After classroom instruction ends,
students begin a 3-month internship at one of several
local institutions or restaurants where they can practice
what they have learned. “I was very impressed with the
instructors. They really prepared us.” Steve recalls, “Most
important, they gave me confidence.”
Today Steve is employed at Farina in San Francisco’s
Mission District. He hasn’t relaxed though. Steve intends
to learn “everything they do in that kitchen.” Dedication
like this has helped make Steve one of the 70% of CHEFS
graduates who find permanent employment.
This is just one example of what ECS does every day and
every night – partnering with individuals as they work
to repair their lives.

Enriching Lives at the ECS Senior Center
Bobby Bogan began attending the Canon Kip Senior
Center’s homeless support group five years ago. He
recalls, “When I first started here, I didn’t know anything
about advocacy. I’d been homeless on and off for years.
But homeless people need to understand the issues. We
have to get out there and speak up for ourselves.”
Inspired by Lolita Kintanar, ECS’s Director of Senior Services,
Bobby established a local advocacy group called Seniors
Organizing Seniors (SOS). This spring, SOS encouraged
hundreds of low-income seniors throughout the City to
attend rallies and speak at city budget hearings. They
emphasized the importance of continued funding for
seniors and adults with disabilities. In response to these
efforts, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors reinstated
funding for congregate meals and case management
3
programs at Canon Kip and other senior program sites.
ECS’s senior center continues to prepare daily lunches and
daytime recreation programs for over 1,000 participants
annually, half of whom are currently or formerly homeless.
In addition, our new Aging and Disability Resource Center
provides information and referrals to another 5,000 elderly
or disabled San Franciscans at centers in San Francisco’s
Chinatown, Bayview, Sunset, and Richmond districts.
In both programs, Lolita Kintanar works hard to inspire
clients to advocate for the services they receive, and
participants like Bobby feel gratified. “Advocacy,” Bobby
concludes, “is so important. If there is a solution, let’s try
to find it together. If not, then let’s create one.”

Sheltering People at Next Door
and The Sanctuary
ECS’s two shelters, Next Door and the Sanctuary, provide residents with much more than a bed and a hot
meal. “They offer stability – a foundation from which a person who has been homeless can begin to integrate
back into society,” says Kathy Treggiari, Director of Shelters at Episcopal Community Services (ECS). Our
shelters provide on-site counseling, case management services and a variety of recovery groups. Residents
can take advantage of the education and vocational services we offer through the Skills Center and CHEFS.
All of ECS’s work is focused on helping our residents obtain permanent housing.
Just as important as the services we provide is the sense of community that we foster. Residents dine together
and take part in game nights and weekly arts and crafts classes. These and other activities give them a
chance to know their neighbors. Volunteers conduct the activities and participate along with our residents
to enhance the experience and build friendships.
Residents work alongside volunteers at each of our sites cooking and serving meals, running the library, and
working in the laundry room. “Volunteering in the shelters really engages residents,” says ECS volunteer
coordinator Mallory Hasick. “Community volunteers have a direct impact on improving morale in the shelters,
but the effect on residents who help is even greater. They gain a sense of pride and accomplishment; they
start to believe anything is possible.”
Resident volunteers built the new garden at the Sanctuary shelter under the guidance of Joshua Griffin, an
Environmental Justice Missioner at the Diocese. Trinity Episcopal Church, Menlo Park, provided funding to
purchase plants and supplies for the garden. Many residents continue to work there every day and look
forward to a bountiful harvest.

Mission: Episcopal Community Services of San Francisco helps homeless
and very low-income people every day and every night obtain the housing, jobs, shelter and essential services each person needs to prevent and
end homelessness.
Episcopal Community Services operates the Sanctuary and Next Door
shelters, provides services at nine supportive housing facilities, and runs
the Canon Kip Senior Center and the Skills Center. Each year, more than
10,000 people receive services and support from ECS.
Building Community. Developing Skills. Enriching Lives.
