1.2 The Assiniboia Advantage
Situated in the heart of southern Saskatchewan, Assiniboia is a prime
location for business opportunity being of relative equal distance to
Manitoba and Alberta and the close proximity to the International border.
Agriculture is the primary business for Assiniboia, and the success of this
business is directly related to the other aspects of business including: retail,
construction, transportation and manufacturing. Assiniboia is located on the
east-west highway #13, also known as the Red Coat Trail and is 100 km
from the Trans-Canada Highway, which connects the entire country.
Highway #2 connects Assiniboia with the rest of Saskatchewan in the
north/south direction. This physical location allows for many transportation
opportunities for Assiniboia.
1.3 The Saskatchewan Advantage
Saskatchewan is a diverse province in which the United Nations has
declared the best place in the world in which to live. Since becoming a
province in 1905, 13 cities have developed, 145 towns, 289 villages, 39
resort villages and 296 rural municipalities. The Province enjoys more
hours of sunshine than most other places in North America and has four
distinct seasons with temperatures ranging from 25 degrees Celsius or
hotter in the summer to –25 degrees Celsius or colder in the winter.
Saskatchewan is centrally located in North America and Canada making it
relatively easy to transport products to nearly any destination on the
continent. Saskatchewan has proven itself as a world leader in innovative
health programs, systems and technologies, of which delegations from
around the world come to study. The province can boast one of the besteducated, most productive workforces in Canada, and being multicultural,
we welcome immigrants from around the world. Saskatchewan definitely
has an advantage! For more information on the Saskatchewan Advantage

1.4 Assiniboia Quickfacts
HISTORY:
The town of Assiniboia is named after the old district of Assiniboia that
was formed in the Northwest Territories in 1882. The original Northwest
Territories’ District of Assiniboia, which encompassed Southern
Saskatchewan from south of Saskatoon to the US border, was named after
the Assiniboine Indians. When Saskatchewan was formed into a province
in 1905 it absorbed most of Assiniboia. Assiniboia was incorporated as a
village on December 22, 1912. It was incorporated as a town in 1913, the
year in which the population of the town soared from 400 to 1400 persons.
The lots for the town of Assiniboia were sold by the Canadian Pacific
Railway, then building a branch line through the wilderness of Southern
Saskatchewan on October 12, 1912, and several of the boys stood
overnight in line to get their lots. All the original 980 lots were sold by
January 16, 1913. Over a quarter of a million bushels of grain was handled
from the new centre by five elevators, all constructed in one year.
The word Assiniboia is Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwa) meaning “One who
cooks with heated stones.”
TIME ZONE:
Assiniboia is in Central Standard Time. Saskatchewan does not

4.0 Assiniboia Business
Assiniboia has the ability to sustain a wide variety of businesses ranging
from dress shops and craft stores to agricultural equipment dealerships
and manufacturing companies. It is through this diverse nature of the
community and surrounding area that strengths are found to promote the
growth of the economy.
4.1 Agriculture
The primary business for Assiniboia is agriculture. Because Assiniboia is
located in the heart of the southern part of Saskatchewan, the town has
an advantage as a central location. Agricultural activity is what Assiniboia
thrives on, whether it be calving and seeding in the spring, or branding
and harvest in the fall. The Assiniboia area can boast a large part of this
activity to the fact there are two high throughput terminals handling the
majority of the grain in the region, and within the town’s industrial park
Assiniboia can boast one of the nations largest livestock auction yards.
