The original Northwest Territories’ District of Assiniboia, which encompassed Southern Saskatchewan from south of Saskatoon to the US border, was named after the Assiniboine Indians. When Saskatchewan was formed into a province in 1905 it absorbed most of Assiniboia. Assiniboia was incorporated as a village on December 22, 1912. It was incorporated as a town in 1913, the year in which the population of the town soared from 400 to 1400 persons. The lots for the town of Assiniboia were sold by the Canadian Pacific Railway, then building a branch line through the wilderness of Southern Saskatchewan on October 12, 1912, and several of the boys stood overnight in line to get their lots. All the original 980 lots were sold by January 16, 1913. Over a quarter of a million bushels of grain was handled from the new centre by five elevators, all constructed in one year. The word Assiniboia is Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwa) meaning “One who cooks with heated stones.” TIME ZONE: Assiniboia is in Central Standard Time. Saskatchewan does not switch to Daylight Savings Time.
