This guide outlines the main shopping areas in the city centre. Each shopping area is colour coded to help you find the shopping area nearest your location – refer to the map opposite to see in which area of the city each venue is located. A5-City Guide-Shopping-AW_Layout 1 16/03/2015 13:50 Page 4 Market Street The Lanes and Leicester’s Arcades Market Street is entirely pedestrianised making it the ideal spot for that relaxed shopping trip, or even just taking in the rich history of the buildings in the area. If you’re looking for quaint and quirky independent shops and boutiques then head for The Lanes, a few minutes walk from the Clock Tower. Enjoy exploring art galleries, jewellers, stylised furniture shops, designer and vintage fashion stores and collectables. A cornerstone of the Fenwick group since 1962, Fenwick Leicester is one of the leading department stores in the East Midlands. You will find everything you will possibly need, from high quality fashion labels and beauty to homewares and a plentiful range of furniture. Don’t miss the Dominoes toy department. Stroll around and meander through the labyrinth of covered arcades full to the brim with eclectic shops. Silver, Malcolm, Royal and Odeon Arcades link the busy High Street to the bustling historic Leicester Market. After taking a short stroll further down the street you will come across two premium jewellers, Tarratt & Lumbers. Both have stood proud in Leicester for over 100 years and offer a stunning selection of diamonds, watches and other eye-catching sparkly pieces. Fashion stores White Stuff and Fat Face have an extensive range to choose from including key fashion must-haves and those all-important basic pieces, while Greenwoods can help you out with that perfect office outfit. Be sure to pop into Watch This Space, a cutting edge, notfor-profit social enterprise selling the work of independent artists, designers and crafts from all over the UK. Enjoy the regular street entertainment and events held in the Square. High Street, Humberstone Gate and Gallowtree Gate This area has trendy newcomers, quirky boutiques, high-street names and independent shops - all waiting to be discovered. National retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Boots, BHS, WH Smith and Primark sit alongside independent shops Jellyrolls Kidswear, Well Gosh, Irish and Set. Leicester Market Visit the new, award-winning Food Hall and chose from a variety of seafood, meats and fresh produce. The historic market, steeped in over 700 years of history is Europe’s largest covered market. A hive of activity, selling everything from apples to zips! At the top end of Gallowtree Gate you’ll find Visit Leicester Information Centre, the ideal spot to pick up the perfect souvenir to remind you of your trip to Leicester. Anchored by the iconic John Lewis building the centre also houses top department stores, Debenhams and House of Fraser. Discover high-end names such as Apple, Hugo Boss, Karen Millen & All Saints in addition to many high street favourites such as Topshop, Zara & River Island. Tucked away off Church Gate behind Highcross is East Bond Street, a treasure trove of small niche independents. It has been said that Leicester’s Golden Mile is the closest that Britain comes to an Indian Bazaar and you can certainly see why. It is an Aladdin’s cave of spices, clothing, interesting gifts, fantastic food and drink and the largest concentration of Indian jewellery shops outside India (hence the name). Haymarket Haymarket shopping centre has been a feature in the city for more than four decades. Located just next to the iconic Clock Tower, the shopping centre is home to great brands such as TK Maxx, H&M and Primark, as well as a number of independent shops. Aside from the big names, the Haymarket also offers a number of independent shops where you will find a wide selection to suit individual tastes. A5-City Guide-Shopping-AW_Layout 1 16/03/2015 13:50 Page 7 Stoneygate and Clarendon Park Narborough Road Just outside of the inner ring road you will find the Stoneygate shopping area made up of Francis Street and Allandale Road, offering the discerning shopper a touch of luxury. The area is full to the brim with charming independent boutiques, retailing everything from scented candles, delightful perfumes to stunning watches and the latest must-have handbags. Narborough Road lies in the West End of the city and is a truly wonderful mix of cultures. Nestled in among the bars and eateries are dozens of international supermarkets, selling everything from Polish to Caribbean food. As for shopping Narborough Road is definitely the place for second-hand furniture, electronics and household appliances. Hinckley Road Just a stone’s throw away lies the fashionable Queens Road in Clarendon Park, close to the stunning Victoria Park. The road is packed full of beautiful independents. The surrounding streets also have plenty to offer from fabulous second-hand furniture to vintage clothing. Just off Narborough Road you will find Hinckley Road which presents another collection of independently run shops and a good range of home stores.
