The brand 3 The new Actros Construction: The benchmark for construction The Actros Construction differs from long-distance vehicles above all due to its outstanding robustness and additional traction. These design features make it suitable for a wide range of construction applications with many different body types. The construction truck for Africa The Actros Construction offers a number of special features that are designed to meet the specific requirements of the African markets: a large-volume air filter with cyclone-type prefilter prevents engine failure even in very dusty conditions. The reliability of the engine is guaranteed by high power reserves and by positioning of the air intake above the cab where there is least dust and where it is protected against splashwater. Fitted with parabolic springs at front and rear, the Actros Construction is designed for maximum robustness. Reliability The effective air filter system is complemented by a well adapted cooling system, designed to cope with the high outside temperatures. The vehicle is protected by a host of features, including such simple details as the protective grilles for the front headlamps. The electronic systems in particular offer maximum protection against breakdown. For example, the fuel injection quantities are reduced if there is a risk of the engine overheating. After all, trucks can earn money only if they are on the move. Economy A high level of robustness is a condition for low maintenance and repair costs. In fact, all the technical features also contribute to economic operation. The powerful Euro 2 engines impress with their low fuel consumption. In addition, the ergonomic design of the vehicle permits more effective working and reduces the risk of operating errors. Special features of the Actros Construction Whether powertrain, chassis, interior or exterior, the Actros includes many outstanding features that make it a superior construction vehicle. •All information and audio systems can be operated via the multi-function steering wheel. •The Telligent® brake system ensures short stopping distances and automatically controls the interaction of the service brake and wear-free auxiliary brakes for this purpose. •The standard hill-holder prevents the vehicle from rolling back when driving off on uphill gradients. •The cab convinces through glare-free instruments and its surfaces are easy to clean. •The cab suspension is especially reinforced to cope with bad terrain. •Vertical exhaust pipes on 8x4 tippers and all concrete mixers improve the breathing air quality for the driver and the workers around. •The standard Telligent® maintenance system permanently monitors oil and coolant levels, based on an individual maintenance plan. •The fully-electronic Telligent® engine management system guarantees efficient engine and drive control and provides protection against engine overheating and overspeeding, which would otherwise cause serious damage. The new Actros Construction 5 A construction truck for many different uses The possible applications for the Actros Construction are as numerous as its benefits. That is why individual solutions are being developed in close cooperation with a number of selected and qualified body builders. Rear tippers 3-axle rear tippers are equipped with a tipping body with a high payload for a maximum bulk cargo capacity of 14 to 16 m3, while 4-axle tippers offer a capacity of up to 18 m3. An engine output in the range from 230 to 290 kW is generally sufficient. The vehicles are usually equipped with an S or M cab. The off-road capabilities are guaranteed by tyres with a rugged tread, increased ground clearance and a steel suspension with overloading capability. Actros rear tippers also feature, due to well balanced equipment with stabilizers and adapted springs, a high level of vehicle stability and powerful hydraulics. 6 Mobile concrete mixers and concrete pumps Mobile concrete mixers are realised with a 3- to 4-axle chassis and usually an S cab. Three model variants are available for transport of ready-mixed concrete: The Actros 3331 B/36/6x4 is suitable for mixing drums up to 7 m3, the Actros 3240 B/45/8x4 for drums up to 9 m3 and the Actros 4140 B for capacities up to 10 m3. An engine PTO provides the power for the mixing drum made of special steel while driving and during stationary operation. Truck-mounted concrete pumps and combined pump mixers are equipped with hydraulically extending beams according to the respective concrete pumping heights. Skip and hook loaders Skip and hook loaders are increasingly being used for construction tasks. The versatile containers can remain on the construction site, while the carrying vehicle is able to drive to the next work location. Skip loaders pick up and unload the swap containers by means of two telescoping arms that are swivelled to the rear. Hook loaders need more space due to the much larger container volume. Here, the containers are loaded by pulling them onto the special subframe of the vehicle and are unloaded by rolling the containers off. Mainly Actros Construction chassis with 230 to 260 kW and S cab are used for these vehicles. Body chassis The ladder frame with 50 mm hole spacing for mounting bodies and attachments provides the ideal basis for body solutions in the construction sector. Reinforced auxiliary frames are installed for many body types. The optional engine PTO and a large range of transmission-driven and independent PTO’s are available to power the body attach ments while driving and during stationary operation. The Programmable Special Module (PSM) provides an electric or electronic interface to control the power output of the PTO’s. Body builders are therefore provided with the best possible technical basis for their individual work on the Actros Construction from the factory. Applications 7 Technology you can trust From the powertrain to the cab, from the electronics to the running gear: the Actros Construction justifies the trust placed in it through many technical details in all areas. Cabs The cab convinces through comfort and a distinctive and durable design. The full-steel cab structure is characterised by high strength and rigidity (in accordance with ECE-R29) and complies with the strictest European safety regulations. Flame retardant materials protect the driver in the interior, and galvanisation provides long-term corrosion protection for the metal panelling. The space offered by the S cab is sufficient for most construction applications. This cab type also permits maximum possible body length. The M cab is an even more comfortable variant, offering larger working space and can be equipped with one or two beds and more storage space. An additional third seat is optionally available. 8 Both cab variants are equipped with a construction-type air filter and feature a maintenance-free 4-point suspension to minimise vibrations and noise. Anti-slip, robust entrance steps with flexible, corrosion-resistant steps ensure that the driver can board the vehicle safely. In the interior, comfortable working is ensured by the ergonomic design of the driver’s workplace, the improved heating and ventilation, electric power windows as well as practical storage facilities. The driver’s seat is air-suspended and the passenger’s seat can be folded up to permit better cross-cab access. Clutch and gearbox Most Actros for Africa are equipped as standard with generously dimensioned singleplate dry clutches. Double-plate dry clutches are installed either as standard or optionally for particular applications. These clutches guarantee the longest possible service life even under the most difficult conditions. Two well-matched, fully-synchronised 16-speed gearboxes (G210 or G240) are available, depending on the input torque and application. Big gear spreads ensure high gradeability in both on-road and off-road operation and low engine rev at high speeds. An integrated oil cooler is available either as standard or as an option for the gearbox (N55), depending on the model. Gearshift There is a choice of different variants for the gearshift. The Telligent® gearshift, for example, reduces gear changing work to a minimum. All the driver needs to do is to press the gear selector forward or back slightly and confirm the gearshift with the clutch pedal. This excludes the possibility of incorrect gear selection as well as engine overspeeding. It also protects the powertrain and relieves the load on the driver. A special construction site gearshift software, e.g. with faster gear changes, is activated if the differential locks are engaged. The hydraulic double-H gearshift is the classic gearshift variant and is mainly used for all-wheel drive vehicles. The current gear is displayed in the driver information system (DIS). Engines The robust and reliable Euro 2 engines of the Actros offer a combination of power and low fuel consumption. The engines are based on the proven unit pump technology with an injection pressure of 1800 bar and electronically controlled plug-in pump for each cylinder. Special components protect the engine against breakdown even under difficult operating conditions. The engine air intake is located above the cab where there is least dust, for example. In addition, most of the particulate matter is already intercepted by a cyclone-type prefilter. Another component designed specifically for Africa is the overdimensioned cooling system, which guarantees cooling even at high outside temperatures and under high loads. It features a body-friendly mounting hole grid and offers sufficient space for frame attachments such as fuel tank and battery. The cross and length members are made of high-strength steel (type E500 TM) and the side rails have a cross-section of 270 x 70 mm. 15.9 l Bore Turbochargers Chassis, suspension and frame The maintenance-free parabolic springs of the Actros offer overload capacity and are designed for maximum robustness with a load capacity of up to 9 t at the front and up to 16 t at the rear. 2 Technology 9 Brakes The electronically controlled Telligent® brake system performs intelligent control of the hard-wearing service brakes and wear-free auxiliary brakes. It detects the speed at which the brake pedal is activated and precisely determines the required braking pressure from this information. This ensures fast response times and shortest stopping distances. The remaining brake lining thickness is indicated in percent on the display of the driver information system. All Actros models are equipped with enclosed disc brakes or drum brakes. Disc brakes respond uniformly and can be controlled very precisely. They have a high thermal load capacity, wear more uniformly and can be replaced faster and therefore at lower cost. A brake enclosure provides protection against ingress of sand and dirt, which cause faster wear. This means the brake pads are best protected against intrusion of sand, dust, water or mud. Fully-closed drum brakes are alternatively used for construction site vehicles subject to extreme operating conditions, particularly for the all-wheel drive variants. The wear free engine brake, consisting of constant throttle and exhaust valve brake, offers braking power and safety reserves and also relieves the load on the wheel brakes with braking power of up to 40 % of retarder braking power. Other advantages of the standard Telligent® brake system 10 include load-dependent brake force distribution, an emergency braking assist function, a deactivatable antilock brake system (ABS) and anti-slip regulation (ASR) as well as a hill-holder function. Axles Non-driven front axles on the Actros Construction are straight cast axles – for maximum ground clearance. They are always equipped with stabilisers and axle links. In contrast, driven front axles on all-wheel-drive vehicles are realised as planetary axles with optional differential lock. On 4-axle vehicles, mechanical axle-load compensation is activated under conditions with significant axle articulation. The rear axles are robust and reliable and are designed for axle loads of up to 13 t (max. 16 t). Depending on configuration, construction vehicles are equipped with one or more planetary axles with differential lock. Thanks to the flat differential housing, they offer a higher ground clearance than single-ratio hypoid axles and are available also with different axle ratios. PTO’s 30 different PTO variants are available for the Actros with different installation positions, operating speeds and sense of rotation. A distinction is made between independent PTO’s (for direct power from the engine) and transmission-driven PTO’s.
