Performers from the Company can be asked to perform at special Departmental and community events, but their main focus each year is Southern Stars. There may be other performance opportunities offered throughout the year. Rehearsals are usually outside school hours and some scheduled school days prior to events. Southern Stars, Dance Festival, Drama Festival and Schools Spectacular require a commitment over a number of school days. (Southern Stars 2015 will be held 25-­‐29 August) There is an annual Company fee of $200. A compulsory company uniform shirt worn at rehearsals and events will need to be purchased at an additional $30. Additional costs are incurred for all performers with other costumes and travel to rehearsals and events. The Orchestra members also require a performance long sleeve shirt. The Company performers complete their commitment at an end of year event for parents and friends. Nonfinancial members are ineligible to audition for the 2015 Southern Stars Performing Company. To be eligible for selection in the 2014 Southern Stars Performing Company you must finalise all outstanding fees from 2014 before Monday 2 March. Students not progressing to the next workshop will need to be collected by their parents at the conclusion of workshop 1. There will be no supervision available to students not progressing to the next workshop. Rehearsals It is imperative that students and parents commit to ALL of the rehearsal and performance dates. If you cannot commit to all of the dates you will be ineligible to hold your position in The Southern Stars Performing Company. If you cannot make any rehearsals, for any reasons, you will forfeit your position in the item being learnt. Specific rehearsal dates will be given to students in the Welcome Package. du.au The Vocal Company consists of two main groups – Featured Artists and Core Choir. The Featured Artist group consists of vocalists from Kindergarten to Year 12* who will assume backing vocal, small ensemble and/or soloist roles in performing the vast repertoire of songs in this year’s production of Southern Stars held at the WIN Entertainment Centre in August. The Core Choir are a group of approximately 30 vocalists from years 6-­‐10 who form an advanced choral group singing in two, three and four-­‐part harmony to support the Featured Artists and to showcase as a solo ensemble, both at Southern Stars and other regional activities. In order to capture the sound that the Core Choir produces, choir members sing into individual microphones. This group proved extremely successful last year and we are excited to offer this opportunity again in 2015. We also encourage students of all vocal styles, including beat-­‐boxing, rap and other vocal talents to audition. *At the student’s schools discretion Vocal Company information continued over page 5 Vocal Company Auditions Cont’d AUDITION PROCESS Round 1: Submit the attached nomination form with either a non-­‐returnable DVD or YouTube link of a single piece of free choice designed to best show the vocalist’s ability, no longer than 2 minutes. This may be a video prepared especially for the audition or video of a performance filmed within the past 6 months. Students who were part of the 2014 Southern Stars Performing Company or the 2014 or 2015 ISER Touring Ensemble are not required to submit a digital audition and will be offered a Round 2 Live Audition by ticking the appropriate box on the nomination form. Round 2: Successful students from Round 1 will be offered a live audition, for which they are to prepare and perform two contrasting pieces with a backing track or live accompaniment. Further details will be provided to these students. Round 3: Successful students from Round 2 will be requested to prepare and perform any number of songs to be featured in Southern Stars 2015. Further details will be provided to these students. REHEARSALS Rehearsals will be scheduled in the July school holidays and on selected weekends from then until the show. A detailed schedule will be made available to those students who are successful in gaining a place in the Southern Stars Vocal Company. The audition should demonstrate a prepared performance. It need not be from the start of the selected piece. 2014 Southern Stars Performing Company Orchestra members and 2015 Performing Ensemble Band members do not need to complete a Video audition. Such candidates need only indicate their status on the Audition Form on the last page. NEW AUDITIONEES, in addition to completing a DVD/Youtube Audition MUST complete the additional form on the last page of this document. Students must list sight reading ability (Examination Level or Equivalent) and have a Teachers Recommendation supplied. This can be Classroom Teacher, Private Teacher or relevant Conductors. Times notified on the website. Audition Process: Students must present ONE individual monologue selected from one of the pieces posted on the website. They may be asked to perform the piece more than once. All students will also be involved in an improvisation workshop during their allocated half hour block. All students must audition in rehearsal blacks. No props or costumes are required. Alternatively, if student are unable to attend auditions due to distance they may send a DVD or Youtube link or a video of their audition monologue for consideration. Rehearsals: Most rehearsals will be outside school time on weekends and after school. There will also be additional whole day rehearsals leading up to performances. Please be aware that there will also be rehearsals in school holidays. For all rehearsals, notice will be given in advance. Commitments: Area Drama Festival in Term 2 and State Drama festival (based on selection from area Festival) in Term 4. Southern Stars show week Wednesday to Saturday and 3 hour rehearsals.
