Principal Chris Stephenson and school faculty and staff welcomed AT&T’s Regional External Affairs Director Terri Williams, Alabama House Rep. Now, with the help of AT&T, the school will be able to make other necessary repairs, along with technology and layout improvements to the library, while also providing much needed funding to purchase new library books. “This is a tremendous opportunity for AT&T to assist our local schools by helping to provide learning resources and facility upgrades, and we are thankful to State Rep. As was his wish, he spent his last days peacefully at home surrounded by his family and with his loving wife of 68 years, Dean, at his side. Parvin was born in Townley, near Jasper, on Nov. 4, 1923. He joined the U.S. Navy as a volunteer in 1942 in the midst of World War II, and was assigned to the defense of the eastern seaboard of the United States. During his naval service after the war, he was selected for the fourth Antarctic expedition of the world-renowned explorer Admiral Richard Byrd. Parvin served aboard the USS Mount Olympus as an airedale involved with aircraft carrier operations. His journey to the bottom of the world included violent storms at sea, frigid sub-zero summertime temperatures and wondrous panoramas of glaciers, icy crevasses and Antarctic wildlife. After serving his country for six years, Parvin was honorably discharged and returned to Alabama, settling in Birmingham. While attending Wheeler Business College, from which he graduated in 1950, he met and fell in love with Ava Dean Addison, whom he married in 1949. He was a member of Berney Points Baptist Church and resided in several locations in the greater Birmingham area, including West End and Fairfield. Parvin spent most of his career working for U.S. Steel; to his coworkers, he was always known for his easy demeanor and quick wit. Parvin retired to Vinemont in 1983 to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren. He joined First Baptist Church of Cullman and served as a Sunday morning greeter before services for nearly two decades. In retirement, he embarked on ministerial pursuits, often combining his generosity, Christian faith, and love of good food. Many people shared in the bounty of his summer vegetable and fruit gardens over the years. However, some of his most important work came through evangelical endeavors, as he went on numerous mission trips to build churches across North America, serving as the meals coordinator for the construction crews. Mr. Parvin also cooked for many other religious and charitable events in Alabama and the surrounding states. Locally, he prepared the annual Thanksgiving dinner for the underprivileged at First Baptist Church and also distributed food and toys to the needy through Cullman’s Christmas Love project. Parvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Linwood Parvin Sr. and Donnie Mae Tate Parvin; brothers, Christy Leon Parvin and Ernest Linwood Parvin, Jr.; and sisters, Nellie Beatrice Parvin Gann and Edith Gwendolyn Parvin. He is survived by his wife, Ava Dean Addison Parvin; daughter, Karen Lynn Parvin Wyatt (R. Kurry); sisters, Betty Maxine Parvin Jackson, Marie Emogene Parvin McCullar and Doris Ann Parvin McConnell (Gene); grandson, Nathan Brantley Wyatt (Sharon); granddaughter, Rachel Alison Wyatt Zabierek (Corbett); and greatgrandchildren, Madeline Claire Wyatt, Aaron Michael Zabierek and Vivian Therese Wyatt. They all aspire to his shining examples of perseverance, devotion to family, generosity towards fellow man and unflagging faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. and funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 29, 2016, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home. Dr. Tom Whatley and Dr. Ernest “Skip” Parvin will officiate. Gloria Parvin will provide music. A graveside prayer will follow at Cullman City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to Hospice of Cullman County (CRMC) or Gideons International. (AP) — A man who stormed into a Kansas factory where he worked and shot 15 people, killing three, had just been served with a protective order that probably set off the attack, authorities said Friday. The assault at the Excel Industries lawnmower parts plant in the small town of Hesston ended when the police chief killed the gunman in a shootout. Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton described the officer as a “tremendous hero” because 200 or 300 people were still in the factory and the “shooter wasn’t done by any means.” “Had that Hesston officer not done what he did, this would be a whole lot more tragic,” Walton said. The gunman was identified as Cedric Ford, a 38year-old plant worker who was armed with an assault rifle and a pistol. Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback said preliminary information indicated that the officer was Hesston Police Chief Doug Schroeder, who did not wait for backup and “seized the situation.” Schroeder has been on the job since 1998, according to his LinkedIn profile. While driving to the factory, the gunman shot a man on the street, striking him in the shoulder. A short time later, he shot someone else in the leg at an intersection, authorities said. The suspect shot one AP Photo FBI agents search the parking lot at Excel Industries, the scene of Thursday’s shooting, in Hesston, Kan., Friday. AP Photo Shattered glass and bullet holes are seen at the front door of Excel Industries in Hesston, Kan., Friday. Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton identified the gunman as Cedric Ford, who stormed into the factory where he worked and shot several people. person in the factory parking lot before opening fire inside the building, the sheriff ’s department said in a news release. Ford had several convictions in Florida over the last decade. His past offenses included burglary, grand theft, fleeing from an officer, aggravated fleeing and carrying a concealed weapon, all from Broward and Miami-Dade counties. According to the Wichita Eagle, Ford also had criminal cases in Harvey County, including a misdemeanor conviction in 2008 for fighting or brawling and various traffic violations from 2014 and 2015. A Facebook page under the name of a Cedric Ford employed at Excel Industries includes photos posted within the past month of a man posing with a long gun and an- other of a handgun in a man’s lap in a car. Federal law bars felons from possessing firearms. Recent posts also include music videos of rappers from Miami, photos of cars and pictures posted in January of a trip to a zoo with children. The shooting came less than a week after a man opened fire at several locations in the Kalamazoo, Michigan, area, leaving six people dead and two severely wounded. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive in those attacks. At least 16 people were taken to hospitals, and one person was listed in critical condition. Walton said his office served the suspect with the protection-from-abuse order at around 3:30 p.m., about 90 minutes before the first shooting happened. He said such orders are usually filed because there’s some type of violence in a relationship. He did not disclose the nature of the relationship in question. A judge issued a temporary order of protection earlier this month for a woman who said in her petition that Ford was a violent, depressed alcoholic. “It’s my belief he is in desperate need of medical and psychological help!” she wrote. The woman said she and Ford were arguing on Feb. 5 when he grabbed her, placed her in a choke hold from behind and took her to the ground. On Thursday, Ford left work early without explanation before returning hours later with a rifle, according to a co-worker. Matt Jarrell said he and Ford worked “hand-inhand” as painters on the second shift. He said Ford arrived as scheduled on Thursday but later disappeared and was not there to relieve him so that he could take a break. Jarrell said someone else eventually spelled him and that he was sitting in his truck in the parking lot when he saw Ford drive up in a truck that wasn’t his. He sped away when he saw Ford shoot someone and then enter the building. Moments later, Martin Espinoza, who works at Excel, heard people yelling to others to get out of the building, then heard popping and saw the shooter, a co-worker he described as typically pretty calm. Espinoza said the shooter pointed a gun at him and pulled the trigger, but the gun was empty. South Carolina deputy shot, wounded; suspect found dead NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina sheriff’s deputy was shot and wounded early Friday during a scuffle with an armed suspect who later barricaded himself inside a home and killed himself, authorities said. The scuffle occurred when a female deputy from Berkley County was investigating a suspicious vehicle with two people in it behind a grocery store in nearby Goose Creek, said State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry. She had placed a passenger in her cruiser and was returning to take the driver into custody when a fight broke out. The deputy, identified as Cpl. Kimber Gist, was shot twice below the protective body armor she was wearing, Berry said. The deputy fired her gun at some point, but it’s not clear whether she hit the suspect. Berkeley County Chief Deputy Mike Cochran said she is in stable condition and expected to recover. Gist, who is black, worked as a correctional officer for a couple of years and had been a patrol officer for about a year. Travis Smith, 36, who was black, died from a selfinflicted gunshot wound, the Charleston County Coroner’s Office said in a news release. Gist called a dispatcher shortly after 12:30 a.m. to say she had a suspect in custody and then called later to say there had been a fight. (AP) — Bernie Sanders was back in South Carolina on Friday, but not for long. As Hillary Clinton barnstormed across the state this week, Sanders was on a tour of middle America. He popped back for a few events in the hours before polls open Saturday in the state’s Democratic presidential primary, but will be on his way to end his day in Minnesota — out of the state and out of the South — by the time they close. After months of trying to introduce himself to voters who have known Clinton for decades, African-Americans in particular, Sanders appeared to acknowledge the reality of his race in South Carolina in how he’s spent his time this past week. And he’s in search of friendlier terrain for Super Tuesday, looking for wins outside the South on the day next week when 11 states hold Democratic contests. “There are some states that we are going to lose. But the race goes on,” Sanders said. “We are closing the gap very, very significantly.” To be sure, the 74-yearold senator from Vermont hasn’t given up on the region. He has paid staff across the South, including about 200 in South Carolina alone, and will stop off in Texas on Saturday on his way to Minnesota. But preference polls suggest Clinton has a huge advantage in the South among black voters, who are expected to make up a majority of voters to AP Photo Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton speaks at a “Get Out The Vote” rally for historically black colleges and universities, at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C., Friday. Similar electorates will vote in Georgia, Alabama and Arkansas on March 1, in Louisiana on March 5 and in Mississippi on March 8. Sanders’ radio and television ads highlight his civil rights work as a college student in the 1960s, when he was arrested for protesting segregated housing in Chicago. This week, while leaving South Carolina largely to Clinton, he visited the majority black city of Flint, Michigan, where he listened to residents’ stories of living with a lead-poisoned water system. Of a previous Flint visit, he said this week, “It was almost impossible for me to believe that I was listening to people in the United States of America in the year 2016.” And during a rally this week at Chicago State University, Sanders drew a crowd of 6,500 that was notably more racially diverse than many of his events. But those weren’t voters who will cast ballots in the South, where Clinton has seemed to be one step ahead at every turn. She, too, has visited Flint and speaks of it often in the South — doing so again Friday in Atlanta, where she campaigned with the city’s black mayor, Kasim Reed. He reminded the crowd of Clinton joining President Barack Obama’s Cab- inet despite their bitter 2008 primary. When the presidentelect called, Reed said, “she put her walking shoes on.” Sanders and Clinton each visited Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia, South Carolina, at different points this week. Sanders got a lukewarm welcome as he spoke during a Sunday luncheon. Clinton got a rousing welcome a few days later from an alumni gathering of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a black sorority. Sanders has used surrogates like Atlanta rapper Killer Mike. Clinton answers with her husband, former president Bill Clinton. The senator promises criminal justice reform and bemoans police brutality against black citizens. Erica Garner, whose father died after a New York City police office administered a choke hold, has campaigned for him. Clinton answered by meeting with five mothers whose children died in police encounters. At a campaign stop in Kingstree, South Carolina, she recalled the gathering: “It just breaks your heart to hear those stories, my friends.” While Sanders has attracted endorsements from several state legislators, Clinton counters with heavyweights such as Reps. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and John Lewis of Georgia, a civil rights icon who questioned Sanders’ civil rights bona fides. Georgia state Sen. Vincent Fort, who is backing Sanders, said Lewis’s broadside was unfair. “I am a historian of the civil rights movement,” said Fort, who is black. “I know what it means to have been in Chicago in 1963 fighting segregated housing.” But Fort and others said winning over Lewis is an example of Clinton’s deep roots in the region. Mississippi Democratic Chairman Rickey Cole, who supports Clinton, noted Mississippi native Morgan Freeman is narrating one of Clinton’s newest television ads and that Clinton just picked up an endorsement from former Gov. William Winter. The 93-year-old Winter, Cole noted, “was governor here when Bill was first elected (governor) in Arkansas in 1978, and served as a mentor” to the future president. “Politics really is about relationships,” Cole said. “And she’s using hers to great advantage.” Trump wins Christie’s support in race laced with insults FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Donald Trump scored a powerhouse endorsement Friday as he sought to regain headway in a Republican presidential race that devolved into a series of fierce insults and schoolyard taunts heading into the weekend before Super Tuesday contests. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie stunned the Republican establishment by swinging behind the New York billionaire, declaring “there is no better fighter than Donald Trump.” Taking the cue, Trump unleashed a raw assault on Marco Rubio, who went after him with fury on the debate stage the night before. Trump called the firstterm Florida senator “a nervous basket case,” ‘’a choke artist,” ‘’a frightened little puppy” and insulted the size of his ears. “This is a low-life,” Trump said of Rubio, not leaving out Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. “Cruz lies, but at least it’s reasonable lies.” Earlier, Rubio joked that Trump might have wet his pants backstage on debate night. Christie’s endorsement came after Rubio shattered months of relative peace with the Republican front-runner by repeatedly attacking Trump’s character in the debate. Christie caught the room by surprise when he stepped out to join Trump at a Forth Worth news conference announcing the governor’s support. The shift marked the beginning of a long-awaited Trump takedown effort that was cheered by anxious Republicans nationwide who question Trump’s party loyalty and fear he’s unelectable in a general election. Christie’s support gave Trump an opportunity to turn the attention back to himself, as he has done repeatedly during trouble spots in the campaign. His critics acknowledge they are running out of time to stop him. He’s won three consecutive primary contests and looks strong in many of the 11 states participating in Tuesday’s mega-round of voting. A close look at the delegate math suggests that he could have an insurmountable delegate lead by mid-March if trends don’t change quickly. you’re going to see a real seriousness,” she said, “with people turning and saying, ‘What do we know about this man?’” There was little sign that Trump’s stock was falling at the Fort Worth rally where supporters gathered. • 2 0 1 6 CANDIDATES LIST • AP Photo New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, right, introduced Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump after endorsing him before a rally at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth,Texas, Friday. Cruz said the Christie endorsement had little impact on his own focus on Super Tuesday. He suggested the development was “troubling news” for Rubio’s campaign, which had been courting the tough-talking New Jersey governor since he dropped his own presidential candidacy earlier in the month. Instead of securing a new ally, Rubio found himself on the wrong end of the Christie’s attacks. “Desperate people do desperate things,” Christie said of Rubio while standing at Trump’s side. “The idea that Marco Rubio can get inside Donald Trump’s head is an interesting proposition.” Christie’s support marked a reversal from his previous comments on Trump: “I just don’t think he’s suited to be president of the United States,” Christie told Fox News in August. “I don’t think his temperament is suited for that and I don’t think his experience is.” Acknowledging “a sense of urgency,” Rubio continued where he left off Thursday night as he campaigned in Oklahoma and gave a series of interviews designed to weaken his rival’s tightening grasp on the Republican nomination. “We have a con artist as the front-runner in the Republican Party,” Rubio charged during an Oklahoma City rally. He also described a backstage encounter with Trump the night before during which Trump requested a fulllength mirror “maybe to make sure his pants weren’t wet.” At roughly the same time in Texas, Trump drew cheers after sharing his own backstage encounter with Rubio: “He was putting on makeup with a trowel,” Trump said. “I will not say that he was trying to cover up his ears.” Trump’s opponents concede that it might take an extraordinary “brokered” national Republican convention in July to stop him at this point. Yet his many critics in the GOP establishment cheered Rubio’s aggressive shift, something they have been encouraging for months. “Point is, there’s still a pathway to beating him,” said Liz Mair, a Republican strategist leading an anti-Trump group. “As of Wednesday, I wasn’t convinced there really was.” On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton claimed new headway on the eve of a South Carolina Democratic primary that she’s expected to win handily. “I think it does take me a little bit longer to get into the rhythm of campaigning,” she said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” ‘’We hit our stride in Nevada. Our message of breaking all barriers is really beginning to take hold. I really felt we were on an upward trajectory.” Even if the Republicanbacked Trump attacks don’t work in the shortterm, Clinton suggested he’d be vulnerable as the GOP nominee in the fall. “When it moves to the general election, I think VOTE FOR ME! BABY BLUES DEAR TIRED: Your boyfriend’s problem isn’t his “flatulence” — it’s his immaturity. Young children think flatulence is fall down funny, but they usually outgrow the kind of humor you describe by the time they reach his age. Tell him what he’s doing isn’t funny to you, that it is making you think less of him and will be a dealbreaker if he doesn’t stop. If you do, it may save the relationship — unless you want to continue being the girlfriend of the class clown. (Or should I say “NO-class clown”?) by David L. Hoyt and Jeff Knurek By Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott DEAR ABBY: I am a girl in my junior year of high school. My boyfriend of three years is very good to me, affectionate, attentive and very good-looking. I don’t think he cheats on me, but he does have serious flatulence. He thinks it’s hilarious and does it in public just to embarrass me to death. He also does it at the end of lovemaking, which I think is gross and he thinks is the funniest thing in the world. Abby, he’s the only serious boyfriend I have ever had. Are all guys this gross and inappropriate? It’s putting a serious damper on how I feel about him. Please help me to save our relationship. — TIRED OF NATURAL GAS IN FLORIDA THAT SCRAMBLED WORD GAME - DEAR LOST AND LONELY: It’s a shame that when babies emerge they don’t bring with them a set of detailed instructions. You appear to be the daughter of a woman who didn’t know how to be a good mother. Children who receive positive reinforcement for good behavior are usually better behaved than those who have it drilled into them from a young age that they are “bad.” When that happens, a child begins to believe what the parent is saying and act on it. While some 16-yearolds are mature enough to decide where and with whom they want to live, it is usually with a relative or qualified guardian and not a boyfriend. However, from reading your letter, I can’t escape the feeling that what’s really bothering you is the idea that, by giving in to your wishes, your mother rejected you. To work that through, you may need the help of a licensed therapist. BY JOHN ROSE DEAR ABBY: I grew up in a poor family on a farm in the South. I worked very hard during my Dear Abby childhood. ThroughBy Abigail Van Buren out my childhood, I was told I was a “bad girl” who always did the wrong things or who would never stop talking. When I was 16, I moved more than 1,000 miles away. My mother happily drove me to the airport to go and live with my 21year-old boyfriend. I am 29 now, and still live more than 1,000 miles away. To this day when I try to discuss (with my mother) why she sent me away so young, she tells me I was “too difficult of a child” and that was what I wanted, so she signed me over at the end of 10th grade before summer break. I will never forget how happy she was to drop me off at the airport. I wasn’t the greatest child, I know. I know I was bad. Can 16-year-olds choose where and with whom they live? Or should the parents make those decisions? Please help me. — LOST AND LONELY By Tom Batiuk and Chuck Ayers Mother abandons daughter by sending her far away BY JIM DAVIS A8 — DAILY MOUNTAIN EAGLE Jasper, Ala., Sat., Feb. 27, 2016 www.mountaineagle.com DAILY MOUNTAIN EAGLE Jasper, Ala., Sat., Feb. 27, 2016 www.mountaineagle.com — A9 MEEK SCHOOL HOSTS ANNUAL CHITLIN’ SUPPER Grant From A1 Daily Mountain Eagle - Nicole Smith The 57th Annual Chitlin’ Supper was held Friday night at Meek Elementary School. Presidential hopefuls to court Alabama voters before primary MONTGOMERY — Five presidential hopefuls will court Alabama voters in the final days before the Super Tuesday primary. Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Ben Carson are scheduled to make stops around the state this weekend. Former President Bill Clinton will also stump for his wife. Secretary of State John Merrill said Friday that Cruz is no longer planning to attend a previously announced appearance in Birmingham. Twelve states will cast votes for party nominees in the March 1 Super Tuesday primary, the biggest single-day delegate haul of the nomination contests. Some states have contests that day for just one party. Republicans will vote in 11 states, with 595 delegates at stake. Democrats will vote in 11 states and American Samoa, with 865 delegates up for grabs. Alabama lawmakers last year voted to move up the primary date to join other states in the region. Merrill said that decision has positioned the state as a “mover and shaker” in the Southern primary. — The Associated Press Sales tax Alabama’s weather preparedness tax holiday, which always falls on the last full weekend of February, to occur before the height of both tornado and hurricane seasons,” said Nancy King Dennis, director of public relations for the Alabama Retail Association. While all state tax is exempt, individual municipalities and counties have the option to waive local tax. The tax-exempt status applies to a specified list of supplies costing less than $60 that would be helpful for a home or business to have on hand during a weather emergency, including batteries, tarps, weather radios and more. Also, any portable generator or power cords that cost $1,000 or less in a single purchase are included. “The goal of Alabama’s fifth annual severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday is to encourage consumers to stock up on emergency supplies before the storm hits,” Dennis said. “Consumers tend to wait until after the fact to get the supplies needed, which can put them in harm’s way if they venture out in hazardous conditions.” Dennis added that the holiday encourages consumers to build emergency kits for homes, vehicles and businesses in advance. From A1 “The sales tax holiday provides a good time to do that and save money,” she said. In Auburn, Cindy Salter, manager of Ace Hardware on East University Drive, said that she does notice that certain items typically get more attention on the holiday weekend. “We don’t see a higher traffic flow of customers, but we do have a higher traffic flow of particular products,” she said, adding that batteries, flashlights, tarps and ropes tend to be popular. Salter said she thinks the holiday is a good incentive to check on one’s emergency preparedness items. “Because number one, it’s tax-free,” she said. “That’s always a big help. And also because it makes them aware of the necessities that they need during severe weather, and it gives them an opportunity to stock up on them.” In Opelika, Dozier Smith T, owner of Winston Smith T Building Supply, said people often seem to wait until after there is a weather emergency to act. “It’s always good to be prepared,” Smith T said. “A lot of times, you don’t know when an emergency’s going to happen, there’s a run on things, and you might end up not having it.” 2 - 10 O z.Ribeye Steak Dinners $25.99 with Fried or G rilled Chicken or Shrimp $29.99 2 - 8 O z.Sirloin Steak Dinners $21.99 with Fried or G rilled Chicken or Shrimp $25.99 Seafood Platter $12.99 Southern Style W hite Fish Fried 4 Piece $5.99 6 Piece $7.99 said in a press release from AT&T. In December, Rowe visited Sumiton Elementary to examine the old library, which she had already been told was in need of a face-lift. Rowe said in her speech to students on Friday that she spoke to Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives Mike Hubbard about the school needing financial assistance for library improvements. Within a few weeks, Williams contacted Rowe to learn more about Sumiton Middle, and Rowe stressed that Friday’s grant wouldn’t have been possible without many people coming together to realize a need and finding a way to address it. “If there’s a problem, there’s a solution. What you have to do is figure out a way to navigate that,” Rowe said. Stephenson added, “It’s all about having a goal, setting a goal and using your resources to get to that goal.” Adkins also addressed students and teachers on Friday, encouraging them to take advantage of the new resources being provided to better their education. Stephenson said Sen. Greg Reed also made a donation to the school, and while he couldn’t be at Friday’s presentation, Reed said in the press release that improvements like the one’s being made at Sumiton Middle are paving the way for a greater, enhanced education. At the time, Reese was deemed a ‘person of interest’ but was held on outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court in an unrelated case. "Our investigation shows that Joshua Reese is the person who shot and murdered Nicholas Hawkins,” Walker County Sheriff Jim Underwood said during a press conference Friday morning. Joining Underwood was Walker County District Attorney Bill Adair, Dora Police Chief Jared Hall, Assistant Sumiton Police Chief Kris Price, Deputy State Fire Marshal Phillip Freeman and Sheriff’s Investigator Chuck Tidwell, who has served as lead investigator on the case. “They are the ones who solved this case,” Underwood said. “These fellows worked extremely hard — a lot of hours, a lot of shoe leather.” Underwood cited the cooperation between the agencies involved in the investigation as the key to arrests being made. “It was certainly a concerted effort between these guys working on this case. Working together, we’ve resolved this matter,” he said. “We have the proper people in custody.” Underwood said officials believe they know the motive for Hawkins’ death, but are "not at liberty to discuss it.” Reese is being held in the Walker County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond. Last week, officials charged Danny Lee Jarvis, 22, of Sumiton, and Cory Daniel Conner, 28, of Dora, with murder for their roles in Hawkins’ death. Both were arrested on Feb. 18. They are being held in the county jail on separate $250,000 cash bonds. “I can't go into what role they played in this case," Underwood said. He did say, however, they did not shoot Hawkins. Colton Stephen Echols, 20, of Sumiton, is accused of lying to police and giving “criminal assistance” to Reese, Underwood said. Echols was arrested Wednesday and is being held in the Walker County Jail. Tessa Jean Wise, 23, of Dora, was arrested earlier this week. Both are charged with hindering prosecution and are being held on separate $100,000 cash bonds. Underwood said a search is on for a sixth person who will be charged in Hawkins’ death. Underwood would not identify who they are looking for, but said that person is also facing charges of hindering prosecution. Neill was friends with 19-year-old Bethany Harris, who was killed while not wearing a seatbelt in a vehicle accident in December. Harris also attended Dora High School and was later enrolled at the University of West Alabama. It’s a big part of the reason they Ender acquired Inciarte Ender Inciarte from Arizona in December. “If you look at our lineup, we really don’t have that many options,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said Thursday after the team’s first full-squad workout of spring training, “but I think Inciarte gives us a really good option.” That fits fine with Inciarte. “I love it,” he said. “I like to play the small game. I like to run a lot and be able to bunt, be able to do different good things at the plate.” The 25-year-old center fielder hit .303 in his second major league season, leading off in 101 of the 116 games he started. He didn’t have much of an offseason after being informed of the fiveplayer trade that sent pitcher Shelby Miller to the Diamondbacks. “I don’t like to stop hitting,” he said. “I swing every single day when I’m in Venezuela, then in January I go to Tampa and do some workout preparation, physical stuff, to take care of my speed and reaction and come here 200 percent ready to go.” Inciarte joins a team that scored only 573 runs in 2015, the fewest in the major leagues. His job, the way he sees it, will be to get on base. “Hopefully this year my on-base percentage can be better,” he said. “It’s not like last year (.338) was bad, but I feel like as a leadoff guy and a guy that wants to be on base, it’s got to be better and that’s what I’m going to work on in spring training games.” Switch-hitting shortstop Erick Aybar, another winter trade acquisition, is another SEE INCIARTE, B2 NASCAR Kyle Busch fails post-race inspection Kurt Busch on pole By CHARLES ODUM AP Sports Writer HAMPTON, Ga. — Kyle Busch’s car failed a post-qualifying inspection on Friday, leaving him at the back of the pack instead of on the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race. The ruling leaves brother Kurt Busch as the pole winner at At- lanta Motor Speedway. Kurt Busch ran strong through all three elimination rounds of qualifying and had the top speed at 191.582 mph before he was topped by Kyle’s fast lap of 191.668 mph in his No. 18 Toyota. Kyle Busch is the defending Sprint Cup series champion. Scott Miller, NASCAR’S senior vice president of competition, said a laser inspection revealed the rear toe, which affects alignment, on Kyle Busch’s car did not meet specifications. Miller said Busch and his crew chief, Adam Stevens, do not face additional penalties. Miller said the violation was found in the new laser test. “This is a way to police that,” Miller said. “Teams asked for it. We instituted it and they didn’t pass.” Miller said Kyle Busch’s car passed the same inspection before qualifying. Miller said more tolerance in the test is allowed followSEE BUSCH, B2 Kurt Busch B2 — DAILY MOUNTAIN EAGLE Jasper, Ala., Sat., Feb. 27, 2016 www.mountaineagle.com SPORTS DIGEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL IMG football coach: Tennessee offers scholarships to 20 players Days before Michigan starts spring practice in Florida at IMG Academy, Tennessee offered scholarships to 20 football players from the boarding school. IMG football coach Kevin Wright posted on Twitter that the Volunteers made an “unprecedented move” on Friday. Scholarship offers are non-binding along with oral commitments recruits make to schools. Wright listed the 20 players in his tweet. Thirteen are in the class of 2017, including Josh Kaindoh, a defensive lineman considered one of the best recruits in the country. Six are juniors and one, offensive lineman EJ Ndoma Ogar, is in the class of 2019. IMG’s campus is in Bradenton, Florida, but it draws top players for all over the country and plays a national schedule. The schools announced the series Friday. The Commodores from the Southeastern Conference will host the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Demon Deacons in September 2022. The teams meet at Wake Forest the following September. The teams have met six times in 10 years, with Vanderbilt winning in the last three from 2011-13. Vanderbilt also announced it will host Mercer in September 2020, the first meeting between the teams since 1932. MLB Indians’ Almonte suspended 80 games for failed drug test GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Indians outfielder Abraham Almonte has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. MLB said Friday that Almonte tested positive for Boldenone, an anabolic steroid generally used by veterinarians on horses. The 26-year-old outfielder will not be allowed to play in regular season games until July, but can play in spring training. Almonte was likely to compete for a starting job in the outfield while Michael Brantley works his way back from a shoulder injury. COLLEGE BASKETBALL ACC reprimands Duke’s Grayson Allen for tripping incident GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference has reprimanded Duke guard Grayson Allen for an incident involving Florida State’s Xavier Rathan-Mayes. The league issued a three-paragraph statement Friday after reviewing the game, saying Allen was reprimanded for his “involvement in the tripping of” Rathan-Mayes. ACC officials say the matter is closed and they will not comment further. Allen stuck his left leg out and Rathan-Mayes tripped and fell with 3.4 seconds left in No. 15 Duke’s 80-65 home victory Thursday night. But Gonzalez intends to give Inciarte the first shot, at least against right-handed pitching. “He puts the ball in play, he’s got some speed, he hit .300,” Gonzalez said. “Just from playing against him, he seems like one of those guys who’s always in the middle of something or starting something.” Gonzalez was encouraged by the early swings of 32-year-old Nick Markakis and 35-year-old Nick Swisher. Markakis is returning from back surgery and Swisher had knee surgery. Catcher A.J. Pierzynski is encouraged early in spring training. “I’m sure there are people around who don’t believe we’re any good,” the 39-year-old Pierzynski said, “but at the end of the day all you can do is control yourself and your team. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. It’s not we came in this year and said, ‘Hey, we’re the World Series favorites.’ But we honestly believe we can compete every game and have a chance.” NOTES: Gonzalez introduced Braves Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Bobby Cox to the team before the workout. “We begged (Aaron) and begged him to come out,” the manager said. “To have him in the locker room is really a special treat for us.” . . . NASCAR Harvick says he will ‘follow along’ with SHR’s move to Ford By CHARLES ODUM AP Sports Writer HAMPTON, Ga. — Kevin Harvick, who has spent his entire Sprint Cup career driving a Chevrolet, said Friday this week’s announcement that Stewart-Haas Racing is moving to Ford won’t force him to look for a new team. Harvick and SHR co-owner Tony Stewart each won championships for the team driving Chevrolets. The team’s move to Ford in 2017 set up a potentially awkward final 2016 season with Chevrolet and led to questions about how Harvick would react. The 2014 Cup champion said during Friday’s practice at Atlanta Motor Speedway he plans to stay with SHR. “Just got to follow along with what your organization thinks is best,” Harvick told reporters. “I think they have the same interest in mind that I do, and that’s to compete for wins and championships.” Asked if that means he won’t leave SHR, Harvick said “I just want to win races. That’s what we’re all going to focus on.” Harvick said the move does not make him a free agent. He was evasive when asked about his contract status after 2016. “My contract, I haven’t even looked at,” he said. “I haven’t even asked. I just assumed that it was all sealed up and done.” SHR will get its engines from Roush Yates, instead of Hendrick Motorsports. Wednesday’s surprise announcement was still big news on Friday during practice and qualifying. Greg Biffle said it was “a very smart move on Ford’s part.” “Quite honestly, I’m very surprised it took to 2016 for them to make a move to add some competitive teams to the lineup because they want to be known for winning on Sundays,” said Biffle, driver of the No. 16 Roush Performance Ford. “You’ve got to have enough organizations where your odds get higher. If you own three-quarters of the field, your odds are better each week.” Stewart has driven for General Motors in all but one of his 18 NASCAR seasons. He is retiring after this season. Stewart said Wednesday he hopes to continue in his “great relationship” with Hendrick Motorsports in 2016 even as SHR prepares “to try to be as self-sufficient as we can going into 2017.” “We see this as a lot of growth for Stewart-Haas Racing,” Stewart said. “... It’s a great opportunity for us to kind of get out of the shadows and, to some degree, get off the coattails, to a certain degree, and really get out on our own.” Even though he has been loyal to Chevrolet throughout his career, Harvick was firm in his commitment to SHR. Busch ing qualifying. “We give them some but they took a little more,” Miller said. Jamie McMurray, who had the top speed in the second round, will start beside Kurt Busch on the front row, followed by Trevor Bayne and Ryan Newman. Denny Hamlin, fresh off last week’s Daytona 500 win, was eliminated in the second round. Before the post-qualifying inspection results were announced, Kurt Busch said Kyle “got us just by a little bit.” “I know I was just a little bit tight out there on the race track,” said Kurt Busch, who said the brothers have a friendly rivalry. “I’ll wave at him and he’ll wave at me and then we’ll go back to business,” said Kurt Busch. “It’s fun.” Trevor Bayne and Ryan Newman will start third Scully says he wouldn’t vote Rose into HOF From A7 and fourth, respectively. Denny Hamlin, fresh off last week’s Daytona 500 win, was eliminated in the second round. Rookie Chase Elliott, was bumped from the top 24 in the final minute of the first round by another rookie, Ryan Blaney. ——— WHAT TO EXPECT: NASCAR’s new low-downforce package produced some struggles in practice and qualifying, along with many predictions of entertaining racing on Sunday. “It’s going to be handfuls (of struggles) on Sunday for a lot of people,” Hamlin said. Added Greg Biffle: “You can definitely tell the difference in downforce. The car is ... over the racecourse a lot more. ... I think it’s going to be a great race. It’s going to be a little slick on Sunday.” ——— UNDER-40 CROWD: There are only 39 cars for the race. It’s the lowest number for a Cup race since 37 competed at North Wilkesboro Speedway in 1996, according to STATS. Since NASCAR standardized the fields in 1998, it’s only the third time all available slots are not filled. ——— MEMORY LANE: Kevin Harvick used his Twitter account to post a video of his first NASCAR win. He barely beat Jeff Gordon to the finish line in Atlanta in 2001. “My 1st cup win and one of the best moments of my racing career,” Harvick tweeted. Harvick qualified seventh. ——— FEBRUARY SUN: The temperature was a little chilly at 50 degrees for the start of qualifying. The forecast for Sunday is ideal — especially for late February. GO DE VILS! The Associated Press LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully says he wouldn’t vote Pete Rose into baseball’s Hall of Fame. The 88-year-old Scully discusses Rose in an interview for the upcoming March issue of AARP Bulletin, released Friday to The Associated Press. Scully was asked by freelance writer Jon Saraceno whether he would vote to induct Rose if Scully had a say, which he does not. “I wouldn’t,” Scully said. “Should he be in? He should be. But by his own hand, he locked the door and kept himself outside.” Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred in December rejected Rose’s bid for reinstatement partly because the former Cincinnati Reds star still bets legally in Las Vegas, where he lives. Rose agreed to a lifetime ban in 1989 after an investigation for Major League Baseball by lawyer John Dowd found the career hits leader placed numerous bets on the Reds to win from 1985-87 while playing for and managing the team. The National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991 adopted a rule that keeps anyone on the permanently ineligible list off the Hall ballot. Scully rarely makes personal comments about current or former players outside of the broadcast booth, where the Hall of Famer will be entering his record 67th and what he says is his final season working Dodgers games. Asked to name the greatest non-Dodgers baseball player he has ever seen, Scully chose center fielder Willie Mays, who played for the New York and San Francisco Giants. ADVERTISER ALERT!
