CELEBRATING
JCC CAMPS,
CAMPERS AND
COMMUNITY
Dear Friends,
the Lessons of Camp Last
As the nights get dark earlier and the
temperatures drop, we long for the dog
days of summer and look back on a
fabulous season at JCC camps.
I still remember riding the bus at six years old with my backpack
on, heading out into the country to attend the Worcester JCC
day camp. I remember that I loved the independence of it.
I loved the smell of it. I loved the camaraderie of it.
Over the next few pages, you’ll see photos
and stories from summer 2015 at JCC
Grossman Camp in Dover, JCC
Kaleidoscope Creative Arts & Science
Camp in Newton, and JCC Camp
Kingswood in Bridgton, Maine. We hope
you get a glimpse into the amazing range
of activities and unforgettable experiences
enjoyed by almost 3,000 JCC campers.
When I spoke at last year’s JCC Winter Benefit about building
an ark, it was based on one of my earliest memories of sitting in
the camp pavilion on a soggy, rainy day. I watched as camp
counselors adlibbed a funny skit of Noah talking about building
an ark.
In this issue, you’ll also find a list of the
generous donors who make camp possible
for so many deserving kids in our community.
And on this page, you’ll even find some of
our very own camp memories.
As we continue Our Campaign to Re-imagine
the JCC, how we expand the camp
experience to reach even more kids and
create even more memories is among our
top priorities.
At the JCC, we are committed to helping
all families reach their highest aspirations –
through camp, early childhood education
and family engagement programs. We remain
grateful to our members, staff, friends
and donors who bring our mission to life
every day.
a Lifetime
Fifty years later, as we re-imagine our JCC, we are building a
pavilion — much like the one I sat in as a child — so skits can be
performed, songs can be sung, Jewish identities can be nurtured
and lifelong memories can be created.
I got on that bus 50 years ago simply to go to camp. Who knew it would turn out to be a
lifelong journey? Who knew it would have such an impact on my life and my children’s lives?
Who knew what a wonderful ride it would be?
- Phil
I just celebrated my 60th birthday at a surprise party given by
my daughter. The guests were my lifelong friends from Camp
Tel Yehudah, the national teen leadership camp of Young Judea.
The memories we share have kept us connected all of these
years. Together, we traveled to Israel in 1973 and experienced
the Yom Kippur War. All because of what camp taught us about the
destiny of the Jewish people and our personal responsibility.
Counting down the days until camp
begins again…
I ended up staying in Israel for more than ten years, serving in
the army, working as a tour guide and teaching.
Because of camp.
Sincerely,
I met Marjie, my wife of 35 years, as I processed my Aliyah to
Israel in 1978 at the Israeli Consulate here in Boston.
Because of camp.

eventS in their own “baCkyardS”
Parents and kids had loads of fun at a jubilant ribbon cutting
ceremony for Ready, Set, Kids! in Arlington. A key component
of our new JCC Center for Families, the family enrichment
center is the home of the JCC’s early parenting programs in
Metro North.
Sukkot commemorates the Israelites’ 40 years of wandering in the
desert. Happily this year, local families didn’t have to wander far
to enjoy the joyful harvest holiday. To keep things close to home,
the JCC and PJ Library® sponsored Sukkot events in Sharon,
Arlington and Framingham. Kids and parents joined in to
decorate sukkahs, sing songs and hear great holiday stories!

this october, we launched the replacement to the annual
JCC winter benefit with the first of our Celebrate the JCC x3
house parties. each house party will focus on one of the
JCC’s priorities: camp, arts & culture and family engagement.
For meira kruskal, summer has always been about grossman Camp.
She’s spent every summer there since she was six years old. From her
experiences as a young camper to her current summer job overseeing
staff and activities for 120 kids, meira loves camp!
these fun and meaningful evenings will provide a new, more
intimate way to connect with valued friends and donors of the
JCC. each event will feature a unique format designed to
highlight the JCC’s work around a specific priority and the
impact that donors make in bringing programs to life.
now a graduate student studying to be a school guidance counselor, it’s
no coincidence that meira chose a career path that allows her to continue
to spend summers at grossman. here, she shares her thoughts on camp:
why i kept coming back
The friendships. Now I see campers forming the same strong friendships that I did.
These kids will go nine or ten months without seeing each other, and when they
come back to camp, it’s like no time has passed.
The first house party,
at the home of
Irina and Mark Barrocas,
focused on the way JCC
camps provide the tools
to build resilient, lifelong
Jewish identities.
Camp made me into who i am today
Camp provided me with so many chances to develop self-confidence and to feel good
about myself. It’s a safe place to be yourself and try new things. I’m so grateful that
I was able to grow up in a place like that.

what touches my heart
When I see kids who struggle academically or socially during the school year get the
chance to succeed at camp and be happy, I know I’m doing something worthwhile with
my summers. Kids spend ten months of the year waiting for the two months they get
to be at camp.
Camp’s influence on my Jewish identity
Being a part of the diverse camp community helped reinforce for me that there is
no “right way” to be Jewish and helped me understand that faith means something
different to everyone.

Camp and my decision to become a guidance counselor
I’ve always been interested in working with kids. What’s unique is that camp gave me
the opportunity to explore my interests at a young age. At 16, I felt empowered as a
counselor to connect with kids and help them grow.
on camp scholarships
The great thing is no one knows which campers receive financial assistance. l see so
many campers really flourish and thrive during the summer, and I’m sure many of
them are there because of financial assistance.
