June/July 2016 Dear People of Grace, As those “lazy-hazy-crazy days of summer” descend upon Happy Valley, I pray that you will have abundant opportunities to rest, recreate, and reconnect with friends and family near-and-far. I likewise hope that faith will play a prominent role in your daily and weekly routine. Grace will be here for you, a virtual beehive of activity as we gather, feed, and send, all to the glory of God and the transformation of our world. Following are updates concerning several important matters within our congregation: Annual Congregational Meeting Our annual Congregational Meeting was held on Sunday, May 22. Thank you to those who were able to be present for the meeting. For those who were not able to attend, the following is a summary of the meeting. • Reports were received from the pastoral staff, the president of council, the business manager and finance team and all the Ministry Coordinators. • The proposed budget or ministry proposal for 2016-2017 was presented by our business manager, Becky Krantweiss, and our finance team chair, Gary Stroschein. The budget holds the line on overall expenses for the coming fiscal year – a 0% increase. Nevertheless, the budget simultaneously addresses a number of concerns and needs identified at last year’s annual meeting, including the provision of a 3% cost of living increase for staff salaries, enhanced funding of our social outreach programs, and plans to allocate and save money for long range building maintenance and required computer upgrades. This was made possible in part due to some temporary savings as we prepare for the possibility of a family/youth ministry intern. As we discussed at the meeting, family/youth ministry is a key to our continued growth at Grace, and we eagerly look forward to making smart, significant, and meaningful investments in that area in the coming months and years. • The only item of new business was Becky’s report that we are going to reinvigorate our efforts at crafting a long-term assessment of our building and property so that we have a road map for future maintenance work. This will enable us to more effectively plan for anticipated projects so that we can be wise stewards of our facilities and the resources with which God has so graciously blessed us. My thanks to all staff, council, ministry coordinators and our ministry teams for a good 2015-2016. I want to especially thank our outgoing council members for their faithful and dedicated service: Ed Prince, Ted Oyler, and Emeline Chandra. Council Election Voting for our new Church Council members continues through Friday, May 27 at 5:00 p.m. We are blessed with a very impressive slate of candidates. Pastor Lynn’s Health Pastor Lynn underwent six hours of back/spinal surgery on May 19 at Johns Hopkins. This is the second of two planned procedures to address his spinal stenosis. Similar to the procedure he underwent last year, this one also involved opening the spinal column to provide more space for Pastor Lynn’s spinal cord to expand and regenerate and the installation of rods for greater back stability. During these early stages of recovery, Pastor Lynn’s focus is on pain management. His overall recovery time is expected to be approximately two months. He and Lois deeply appreciate your ongoing prayers and the many cards and greetings you have sent. continued on page 3 On the Inside Worship page..........................2-3 New member welcome...........3 Music news..................................4 From the church office.............4 College news...............................4 Thank you notes.........................5 Softball schedule........................5 Social ministry & congregational care........................................6-7 Women of Grace....................8-9 Financial page ........................10 Green tip for summer..............10 Property.....................................10 High school graduates............11 Children and youth............ 12-13 Preschool & kindergarten.14-15 Pastoral acts; Birthdays; Prayers............................. 16-17 Worship volunteers............. 18-19 Calendar..............................Insert Preparing our Hearts and Minds for Worship Sunday First Reading Psalm Second Reading A LUTHERAN WORD TO PONDER Holy Gospel June 5 3rd Sunday after Pentecost 1 Kings 17:17-24 Psalm 30 Galatians 1:11-24 Luke 7:11-17 June 12 4th Sunday after Pentecost 2 Samuel 11:26-12:10, 13-15 Psalm 32 Galatians 2:15-21 Luke 7:36--8:3 June 19 5th Sunday after Pentecost Isaiah 65:1-9 Psalm 22:19-28 Galatians 3:23-29 Luke 8:26-39 June 26 6th Sunday after Pentecost 1 Kings 19:15-16, Psalm 16 19-21 Galatians 5:1, 1325 Luke 9:51-62 Sunday July 3 7th Sunday after Pentecost First Reading Isaiah 66:10-14 Psalm Psalm 66:1-9 Second Reading Holy Gospel Galatians 6:[1-6] 7-16 Luke 10:1-11, 16-20 Colossians 1:1-14 Luke 10:25-37 July 10 8th Sunday after Pentecost Deuteronomy 30:9-14 Psalm 25:1-10 July 17 9th Sunday after Pentecost Genesis 18:1-10a Psalm 15 Colossians 1:15-28 Luke 10:38-42 July 24 10th Sunday after Pentecost Genesis 18:20-32 Psalm 138 Colossians 2:6-15 [16-19] Luke 11:1-13 July 31 11th Sunday after Pentecost Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23 Psalm 49:1-12 Colossians 3:1-11 Luke 12:13-21 MUSIC IN THE LITURGY The Extraordinariness of Ordinary Time Ecclesiastes 3 tells us, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” This is also true of the musical patterns in the Lutheran church: each season has its own music to support Scripture. Two holy days we just celebrated–– Pentecost (May 15) and Trinity (May 22)––ushered in the current season called “time after Pentecost,” otherwise known as “ordinary time.” Pentecost songs This column features quotes from noteworthy Lutheran theologians and thinkers, along with discussion questions to help you dig more deeply into the concepts and a prayer to focus your contemplation. This month we feature a quote from Johann Arndt (1555-1621), a German Lutheran theologian whose writings, especially the book “True Christianity,” had an enormous impact on the Lutheran Pietist movement that sought a faith that was of the heart as well as of the head. This excerpt comes from that book. “Everyone wishes very much to be a servant of Christ, but no one wishes to be his follower…He who loves Christ will also love the example of his holy life, his humility, meekness, patience, suffering, shame, and contempt, even if the flesh suffers pain…It is now the desire of the world to know all things, but that which is better than all knowledge, namely, to know the love of Christ, no one desires to learn…Christians now desire an imposing, magnificent, rich Christ, conformed to the world, but no one wishes to receive or to confess and to follow the poor, meek, humble, and despised Christ.” Source: Johann Arndt, TRUE CHRISTIANITY (© 1979 Paulist Press, p. 22) convey God pouring out his Holy Spirit upon the faithful (and us) to guard and guide us in daily living. Trinity music recalls the mystery of the Three in One (and One in Three), using three sung repetitions of “holy” to recall the Trinity. Ordinary time carries us forward through the rest of the church year as the Spirit helps us to grow in faith and respond to God’s boundless love. The liturgical color returns to green, signifying growth and new life in our faith. Music echoes Scripture with songs about healing, forgiveness, new life, and proclaiming God’s reign. Simply 2 stated, the music is full of life––literally “green” that you can hear. During this lengthy period of “ordinary time” that takes us through the end of the church year, ponder God’s extraordinary gift of salvation through Jesus’ resurrection. Listen for familiar hymn tunes–– some woven into organ preludes–– and music that communicates new life, as sung or played on instruments by our summer soloists. Live joyfully in celebration of the path Christ has paved for us! Questions to Ponder: 1. What does it mean to you to be a follower of Christ? Is it a highway to power or an invitation to a humble servant life? 2. If Jesus calls his followers to humble servanthood, is the same true of his Church? How does a congregation like Grace exemplify humble servanthood? What are we getting right? What might we do better? 3. What stories from the Bible show Jesus as a humble servant? How do those stories inform and inspire your walk of discipleship? How might they guide your prayer life? A Prayer: Lord, you lived a humble life, teaching, serving, and blessing. You poured yourself out for me on the cross. You have loved me beyond my deserving and beyond my ability to comprehend. Help me to return that love by loving, serving, and blessing my neighbor. In your sacred name I pray. Amen. Welcome New Members! We welcome Don and Gina Leon as new members of Grace. Don is wellknown to many as a retired professor of architecture at Penn State. Gina served as an editor and instructional designer at Penn State World Campus for 24 years and is now a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels. In their free time Don enjoys painting and Gina enjoys gardening. Together they enjoy cycling, tennis, and their lovely grandchildren. Many will recall that Gina’s father, Dr. Robert D. Hershey, who retired as pastor of Holy Trinity in New York City, served as Grace’s Interim Pastor from 1981-82. We are so pleased to have the Leon family as part of Grace! 3 continued from page 1... In the meantime, do not hesitate to contact me if you need pastoral assistance. Our best “get well soon” gift to Pastor Lynn is to maintain a Grace Lutheran Church that loves lavishly, worships faithfully, humbly serves our community, and robustly proclaims the very Good News of Jesus Christ. Thank you for doing your part in fulfilling that very exciting mission. Your brother in Christ, Pastor Schul DID YOU KNOW THAT… { .... the Allegheny Synod Assembly will be held June 3-4 in Altoona at the Blair County Convention Center? Pastor Schul will represent Grace along with our four delegates, Brian Bills, Susan Buda, David Pencek, and Anne Whitney. { .... Camp Sequanota’s summer camp schedule begins June 12? Pastor Schul is scheduled to serve as chaplain for the week of Family Camp, which begins July 10. For more information visit Camp Sequanota’s website at www.sequanota.com. { ....a basket has been placed at the welcome center to accept getwell cards for Pastor Lynn? The office will deliver them for you. New Member Sunday Is the Holy Spirit drawing you to Grace? Are you feeling called to join our congregation? Our next New Member Sunday is June 19. See Pastor Schul for more information about joining Grace or email him at pastorschul@ glcpa.org Special Music Participants Thanks to everyone who helped to provide special music in our worship and parish programs this year. In addition to our adult, youth, children’s choirs, and bell choir, approximately 30 parishioners participated in creating music to proclaim the Gospel and support our liturgy. It’s easy to say “let someone else do it,” but you stepped forward and helped to make music that I hope was as meaningful to you as it was supportive to others in their worship. Next year I hope to hear from more members of our faith family and to give you the opportunity to share in worship. (It’s a great way to get to know others in your faith family, too!) If you sang in high school or college choir—whether or not you read music—or even if you have no choral experience but can carry a tune or sing harmonies, you can contribute in some fashion. Music is one of the ways we can engage ourselves in praising and thanking God for the gift of this life and the promise of the life that is yet to come. Get involved; praise God joyfully in song! For information about how you can get involved, email me at [email protected]. Laurel Sanders, Worship & Music Coordinator and Crossfire Youth Choir Director Crossfire Youth Choir Resumes September 18 Our teen and t(w)een choir, Crossfire, has finished rehearsing for the season and is taking a well-deserved break. If you sang with us this year, or had a child who sang, thank you for your support. We especially thank graduating seniors Melina Matsoukas and Bobby Bendik, who sang with us through their senior year, and Aly Toso, who was with us for part of her senior year. Music is a vital part of worship, and you helped to make it so. From singing at seven Sunday services, participating in Nine Lessons and Carols, representing our church in the community at the Festival of Trees, and greeting worshippers with choral Hosannas in the stairwell, you added sparkle to our joyful praises. Rest well! • Rehearsals will resume on Sunday, September 18, from 10 until 10:30 a.m. in room 203. • All students in grades 6-12 are welcome. • Bring a friend! To the Pastors, staff and members of Grace Lutheran, “Thank you to all for the kind words and deeds to recognize us as we leave State College and Grace Lutheran. We will be moving in mid June back to Omaha, Nebraska to a retirement village operated by Immanuel which is a part of the ELCA. We lived in Omaha for 30 years before moving here in 1987. We have several members of our extended family there. Our children live in Albuquerque, NM., Kansas City, Mo., and Charlotte, NC so it is centralized for them. We have benefited so much from our experiences here, thanks in a large part to this church. I especially have enjoyed working with the music and the children. A lot of wonderful memories - thanks to you all. We will keep in touch via the internet. Again thank you and thank God for enriching our lives here. Sincerely, John and Joan Denny Thank you from our Preschool: Another Successful Silent Auction Fundraiser This year’s silent auction, which supports our preschool and kindergarten and its tuition assistance program, has been very successful. Approximately 120 items were contributed by parishioners, preschool and kindergarten families, and area businesses. Thank you to everyone who contributed items and also to those who bid on the goods and services. Typically we raise approximately $2,500 and we have exceeded that number this year, raising $3,170 due to your support and generosity. On behalf of our school, and especially the families that benefit from tuition support, we thank you! Thank you from The Bells of Grace The Bells of Grace handbell choir thanks all who ordered plants from our recent sale! This sale was very successful! We hope that you enjoy your beautiful gardens all summer. Also, a special thank you to those who purchased flowers for the planters and gardens on the church property! Your gift will brighten the church grounds for all to see. Thank you from ALSM Thank you to the members of Grace for your support of the annual Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries fund-raiser, a brunch and fashion show at the Oaks retirement community in Pleasant Gap. We appreciate your ticket purchases, attendance, those who served as hostesses, and two basket donations for our auction. Our success allows us to continue to serve others through the ministry of love and compassion in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We support the residents at the Oaks. - The Centre County ALSM Auxiliary From Women of Grace Many thanks to all who helped “shower” Morning Star Pregnancy Services in Harrisburg with dozens of baby items and clothing, including handmade sweaters and caps. (not pictured: Carina Raynar, Scott McDonald) PA Interfaith Power and Light Bike Trip What a feeling of triumph. We rode into Washington, D.C., along the Capitol Crescent Bike Trail, entering the mall at the Lincoln Memorial -- on our bikes! It was a beautiful sunny day, unlike most of our cool and cloudy bike trips. It was the very best way to enter our nation’s capital. While on Capitol Hill, the seven riders who completed the 210-mile trip, plus two PA-IPL staff members, formed teams to speak to our congressmen. My team had appointments with five legislators; however, the congressmen themselves were not present. We met with staff members who heard our concerns, listened to our talking points, and informed us of their positions on the issues. We voiced opinions on the Trans Pacific Trade Agreement, the Global Climate Fund, health concerns associated with fracking, and other climate change related issues. Grace members Jon Brockopp, Dave Hunter, and I, plus four other riders from State College churches, started our on April 29. Staying at night at a produce co-op, a church community center, a homeless shelter, and private homes, we biked mostly rural roads and bike trails to arrive in Washington on May 3. Wednesday, May 4 was our day on Capitol Hill along with PA-IPL people, Cricket Hunter and Rev. Alison Cornish. National IPL members were speaking with their respective congressional delegations on the same day. Grace Lutheran Church has recently become a supporting member of PAIPL. Learn more about this faith-based environmental organization at their website, www.paipl.us. In God’s service, Ed Prince 6 We raised all the money needed to sponsor “Mandy,” “Rita,” and “Mary” who use Interfaith Human Services to handle their finances. The money we generated will get these people through a year without having to worry about paying the fee for this service. Grace, together we raised a bit more than the $1,368.00 needed. In fact, we raised $1,409.36! We are a church community that cooperatively gets a job done. WE DID IT! We worked together, and we were successful! Isaiah 25:4 - “You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat.” Thank you, Janet Lybarger Social Ministry Chairperson Notes from Comfort Makers to the Congregation Thank you to everyone who helped sew backpack school kits and quilt kits this season.
