About YWAM Newcastle
Lisa in Missions Serving with YWAM Newcastle Australia April 2011 About YWAM Newcastle G’day mate! I’m so excited to be sharing what God has me currently doing in Newcastle Australia. It is never a dull moment, that’s for sure! In July 2010 I left my home in Washington and traveled across the world to move to Australia and joined on staff at YWAM. YWAM (Youth With A Mission) is an organization founded by Loren Cunningham. It’s original design was to focus on youth and see them trained in missions. The whole main purpose of YWAM is for youth to know God and make him known. YWAM is currently operating in more than a 1000 locations in over 180 countries. YWAM Newcastle Australia’s main ministry focus is on the youth. Australian youth are pretty rough around the edges and a lot of fun to work with. They’re extremely honest in where they’re at and their lives aren’t masked or hidden. What you see is what you get. There is racial discrimination, gangs, high percentages of domestic violence, drug use, alcohol use, abortions, and suicide. On Saturdays we run a youth program called Youth Street which is focused on interesting all sorts of social groups and creating a safe environment where they can socialize. We run a skate team, surf, dance, sports, and music. Each team is focused on different interests and draws youth that are involved in those areas socially. Each YWAM base globally runs schools called DTS or Discipleship Training School. It’s main focus is to equip Christians to serve in missions in varying fields. Our base this year is running 10 schools. That’s over 100 people being trained in missions and going out to impact the nations! DTS, staff development, student development, arranging speakers who teach on schools, where we’ll be sending teams in missions on outreach, and training in the community. Evangelizing to International students Helping run an International Church service Branching out in more mercy ministries in the city of Newcastle! Inside this issue: My role at YWAM Newcastle Since joining on staff in July 2010, I have been working in what is called the Training Department. This department focuses on anything having to do with training people in missions. Our department is what organizes Special points of interest: My day includes talking to people from all around the world whether via Skype, the phone or in person. It’s such a blessing to be in a place where I can influence the nations! Together we have partnered with an International church group and go to the University to evangelize and offer support to International students. The women we work with who help run the International Church cook a mass amount of food every Tuesday and we bring it to the University and set up a lunch for students who can’t afford to buy their own lunches. The University has a large group of International students that come from around the globe to study in Australia. Most of them come from poor family backgrounds or are in Australia on refugee status. Through building relationships with these students, we are able to offer support to them emotionally and spiritually. Many of these students come from Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Taoist, Shinto, Jainism and Mysticism backgrounds. Through our group, many of them are hearing the gospel for the first time. It’s amazing to see them so eager to hear about the gospel and wanting to come to our International Church service. Through the work of Jesus and building a relationship with him, they’re renouncing their old beliefs and sharing the gospel with their families! It’s amazing to see how one act of obedience can change the nations! International Church Service As a follow up to our evangelism at the University of Newcastle, we invite students to come to an International Church service. The church is run by a group of YWAMer’s. We are the ones who actually put on the service. Different ones of us take turns leading worship, sharing testimonies, and giving a sermon. for students on the DTS to come and grow in skills in evangelism and leadership. Every school quarter we are joined by students from the DTS who help us run the church service. tions and the International University students can voice their questions. I myself feel challenged as God is growing me in public speaking and preaching in many different settings. Not For Sale is an organization focused on abolishing slavery in this modern age. (for more info visit www.notforsalecampaign.o rg) titution was that it would cut down on the cases of human trafficking. However it had the opposite effect by creating a large appetite where more was wanted than what the typical massage parlors and brothels promised, including under aged girls. There are more than 30 million slaves in the world today. Australia is a destination country for victims trafficked from East Asia, South East Asia, and Eastern Europe. In Australia, prostitution is legal. One of the hopes of legalized pros- I myself have been working alongside others who have a heart for mercy ministry towards researching the local brothels in the area. Together we have uncovered that most of the trafficking rings are run by local biker gangs. Because of the laws in Australia, most of the rings are protected by police refusing to research a suspected ring unless there is a personal statement from a victim or witness. In June, Not For Sale is putting on an Investigators Backyard Academy in Sydney focusing on training people in how to research trafficking rings in the safest way, how to work with local authorities, and how to make a difference. I am planning on doing this academy. Picture with David Batstone. Founder of Not For Sale “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love that you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” Hebrews 6:10 Refugees in Newcastle Something that has recently gripped my heart is befriending and getting to know more about Sudanese Refugees. In 1983 the Second Sudanese civil war started. Roughly 2 million people were killed, either by attack or famine and disease as a result of the war. The war ended in January 2005 but over 4 million people are still displaced and in refugee camps. The Australian government has taken in thousands of refugees and many refugees from Sudan have made their way into Newcastle. These refugees are displaced from their home, their family, and country. On Christmas I met a Sudanese refugee couple and their children. The father Hadassi shared with me that he became a Christian through a missionary that came to visit them in the refugee camp in Sudan. Hadassi said he prayed every day to God and asked him to rescue them from the camp. He told me that God promised him that he would bring his whole family to Australia one day. They were in the refugee camp for over 10 years! However, Hadassi held onto God’s promise. Now there is a man of faith! I want to work with more families like Hadassi’s, families who don't even know God yet. Please pray alongside me for the Sudanese refugees in Newcastle. I’d love for my ministry to focus on teaching them English, helping them find jobs, and receive healing from all the pain they’re been through.
