Register early to avoid disappointment because your class is full! Registrations will be processed in the
order received. No spaces will be held without full payment. It is the responsibility of the participant to
appear in class on the correct day and hour without additional notice. Oglebay Institute students and
patrons may be pictured in promotional materials for the Institute unless they notify the Institute of their
wishes otherwise.

IN PERSON – You may register in person at any of Oglebay Institute’s facilities.
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS
Oglebay Institute is committed to offering a wide variety of courses. As a result, sometimes classes have
to be canceled due to insufficient enrollment. In such cases, our staff will notify students no later than 48
hours before the class begins, and the full course fee will be refunded. Oglebay Institute reserves the right
to substitute instructors. For participants to cancel and receive a full refund, they must call the facility
and cancel at least one week before the class begins. No refunds made less than a week from the date
the class starts and no proration of class fee once the class has started. Class fees cannot be transferred to
another class or term.

The Roots ‘N Shoots series provides adults and
their children the opportunity to incorporate
nature education and outdoor fun into all
seasons. Lessons include a hands-on nature craft,
story, song and a short trip, weather permitting,

This program is designed for our littlest independent
learners (4 years - 1st grade) without a parent.
Sept. 9: Animal Architects: Beaver Dams - Take a
walk in the woods and search for a variety of animal
homes. Collect supplies on the trail and practice some
animal architecture as you construct a beaver dam
and a bird nest. Plan to get wet and muddy!
Sept. 23: Capturing Litter Critters - Find out who is
hiding beneath the dried summer plants and in the
soil. Check them out, up close and personal, with your
own microscope as you identify nature’s recyclers.
Oct. 7: Tree Architects: Seeds - Explore the forest
floor looking for seeds. Compare their many
different “coats”. Experiment with how seeds travel
and construct your own helicopter for testing.
Oct. 21: ‘Dem Dry Bones are Gonna Rise Again!
- Examine ‘dem bones (vertebrae and skulls) of

Mountain Moon Coffeehouse
Mountain Moon Coffeehouse returns, bringing
regional and national bluegrass and Americana
performers to the Stifel Fine Arts Center.
Admission includes non-alcoholic beverages and
light snacks. Beer and wine are also available for
purchase.

Nature Programs for Children
Birthday Parties at the Schrader
Center
Celebrate your child’s next birthday with a handson, nature-themed party led by an experienced
naturalist. Parties take place partly indoors, partly
outdoors as weather permits. Choose a theme
that best meets your child’s interests. Parties
include stories, activities and a craft based on
the party theme to keep children involved and
entertained while they are learning.
Ages: turning 5 - turning 12
Guests: Minimum of 8 and maximum of 15
children (Two adults must stay with the party. If
you have more than four adults or more than 20
total guests, we ask that you consider a facility
rental rather than a facilitated children’s party.)

Merry and Bright Candy Cane Hunt
Craft a holiday bag, then set out on the trails to
see how many candy canes you can find. Certain
ones may win you a prize! Bundle up and bring
a flashlight. Hot chocolate and cookies will
be served upon your return. Children must be
accompanied by an adult.

Nature Programs for Families
Christmas Bird Count
Join the Schrader Center Staff and the Brooks
Bird Club on the this long-running annual wildlife
census to assess the health of bird populations
and to help guide conservation action. Some
skill in bird identification is necessary, but not
required. You’ll be paired with an experienced
birder as you walk/drive around Oglebay Park to
count as many different species as possible.

Halloween Hikes
Discover some of Halloween’s scariest creatures
and misunderstood animals of the night as you
embark on a guided hike on the trails around the
Schrader Center. If you’re brave, hike the Haunted
Trails after dark.
5-6pm hikes will be for those who would prefer a
fun and interpretive hike to learn about animals.
Hikes 7:30-8:30pm will be self-guided Haunted
Trail tours for those who love a good scare.
Monthly Bird Walk
Birding doesn’t have to stop when once summer
is through. Join our naturalists on monthly bird
hikes to exchange knowledge about birds or to
start a new hobby. Try to catch a glimpse of a
few migrating species at they travel south for the
winter.
