InterHASHional News
April 2001 Trash for those who have the Half a Mind it takes to Hash Vol. 11 No. 1 InterHASHional News Terra Porcus Lux Hash has 3rd Birthday Beaver Bam Bam Balls, Punxsutawney, PA The third birthday and 4th running of the Terra Porcus Lux Hash House Harriers in as many years was held recently in Punxsutawney, PA in conjunction with the local celebration of Ground Hog’s Day. Though Bill Murray was not in attendance, about 20 half-minds braved the night to discover if spring was on it’s way, or if winter would be hanging around a bit longer. This event is truly IHNews Has Moved! There have been some pretty major changes in my life over the past few years, and they have interfered with the publication of IHNews more than I would have liked, but that has changed. Some major changes have been the move to a new city, the finding of a new job, and the biggest change, my wedding. Now that those are behind me, I can once again concentrate on my hashing and publishing IHNews, that is after I pay proper attention to my new wife, Low Beams. She will also help me keep a schedule and get IHNews out on a somewhat regular basis. If you have anything to submit to IHNews, articles, pictures, local newsletters, etc., please send them to: InterHASHional News 104 Riverferry Way Rochester, NY 14608-2451 (716) 232-1295 Austin Prepares for IAH Austin, TX Preparations continue for the next InterAmericas Hash to be held in Austin, TX Friday, Aug 31st through Monday, Sep 3rd, 2001 – Labor Day Weekend. See the registration form elsewhere in this issue and look for more information on-line at http://harrier.net/interam and be sure not to miss the fun. To give you an idea what it is all about, here is what some half-minds said about the last InterAM in Pittsurgh, Labor Day 1999: See InterAM (Continued on page 12) one of the more interesting hash events I have the pleasure to attend. It is called a campout, but there really is no camping involved. We basically stand around a campfire all night with only a break to run trail and then the survivors can go see Punxsutawney Phil’s weather prediction. There was the year of the bitter cold, the year of the rain, and last year where the event seemed destine to be Keeping in the tradition of this hash, the hare (notice I said hare, I’m not quite sure how I was the one left with the flour bag while my two, count ‘em, two co-hares managed to keep their hands clean) left for the live lay and was barely to the first check before hearing the hounds on the trail. The nice thing about the trail is that it is all down hill from The Knob to the first beer check, so I was able to stay in front of the hounds hot on my heels. Like a scene from the movie, the trail seemed eerily familiar. The first beer check is at a power or gas substation and has a wonderful view of the Greater Punxsutawney Metro area. Some of the non-trail bastards actually got dropped off by the van at the first beer check and were able to join the trail from there. I was joined by TuTu Fairy to hare the second leg of the trail which wound down the hill and into downtown Punxsutawney. We were taking our time laying the trail, trying not to attract too much attention cancelled due to the start and camp location being cordoned off and no parking allowed. The hashers all managed to find each other in one of the local bars and the event was pulled off. So the question for this year remained; how would this year suck? The weather seemed to cooperate for the most part by not being too cold and mostly clear except for the small amount of snow in the early morning. The hashers all assembled at the campground, if you can call it that since no one really camps, and it was more like a small piece of land at the confluence of two small streams. After parking, it was necessary to navigate the owner’s snow and ice covered driveway, climb down a small embankment, and cross a “bridge” (a 2x12, I think) to get to the hash location. The fire was already ablaze and the beer was already freely flowing when I arrived, only about 30 minutes before I was to be a hare. I’m guessing my co-hares were beginning to get nervous. After a bit of libation, it was time to make our way to Gobbler’s Knob for the midnight start of the hash. We broke into two groups, those wishing to actually do trail, and those happy to meet us at the trail’s end. Those wishing to do trail piled into the van and off we went to “The Knob”. We took a side street to get there so as to avoid the local (or maybe they were staties) police roadblock designed to keep us from driving to The Knob. Send material to: Scott “Beaver Bam Bam Balls” Kanzelmeyer, InterHASHional News, 104 Riverferry Way, Rochester, NY 14608-2451 InterHASHional News Phone: (716) 232-1295, Email: [email protected] April 2001 11 from the very impressive number of police patrolling the town when we heard the pack closing in, and we were beginning to run out of flour, so it was a beeline to the final beer check, the ar right on Main Street where we are becoming famous (infamous) for our singing and drinking because everything had worked so well and the weather was mild, this would encourage the hashers to come again next year, and to bring new victims, er . . . guests. InterAM (Continued from page 1) First off, to the Pittsburgh group, "THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!". That was one hell of a great weekend. Second, to all you whiners that didn't want to spend a couple bucks: You missed the greatest weekend party you can imagine. Thurs: Okinawa laid a nasty trail that seemed to climb forever (little did we know that this was just a prelude to the rest of the weekend). For an in town trail we only saw about 3 blocks of pavement. What a great way to start. And to finish this one we ended up at a place that was a bar and water park with a hot tub for 100+. each Ground Hog’s Day. For some reason they still let us in there and, once again, we closed the place. Now for the van ride home to the campground and more libations. Down downs were given and everyone got at least two, including our hosts. Some of us got more than our share. The pallets that we burned didn’t seem to last very long and soon it seemed that we would be out of wood. Some of us foraged for more wood in the surrounding forest, while some decided to take a rest and sleep by the fire or in a car. With dawn still not upon us, many of the assembled hashers made the trip back up to The Knob to experience the spectacle of rodent weather prognostication. I, on the other hand, chose to do what I have done each and every year. I stayed by the fire and drank. On The Knob, they were treated to music (the theme from Superman, the theme from Star Wars, etc., etc.), fireworks, and bad jokes to try to keep them alert and interested. They had dancers, the Pennsylvania Polka, and men in black top hats. I just kept dragging more wood and stoking the fire. When the moment came, they pulled the rat from his hole and while the snow fell, the rat claimed to see his shadow. In what has now become the tradition, many made the trip back to State College to have breakfast at TuTu Fairy and DO Beaver’s pad. All in all, everyone seemed to have a good time. We were discussing how this year had sucked differently that the previous years, and the conclusion was that it had sucked because there was nothing to really complain about, and that really sucked. We suspected that 12 Fri: Multiple trails to choose from. I took the one that started way the hell up high and went mostly downhill. We started off going through an old folks home singing hash songs. Their looks were priceless (our singing was terrible). I recall an impromptu beer check at a local carry out in a neighborhood that most of us wouldn't enter under normal conditions. The real beer near was in town in the Send material to: Scott “Beaver Bam Bam Balls” Kanzelmeyer, InterHASHional News, 104 Riverferry Way, Rochester, NY 14608-2451 InterHASHional News Phone: (716) 232-1295, Email: [email protected] April 2001 Andy Warhol Museum. We crossed over a bridge into the center of town and through some sort of festival and then on-in to dinner at the wharf. This was followed by the nighttime boat cruise with a band and way too many Pittsburgh cops who looked way too confused by us. 8. Zippy's velour Hawaiian shirt...YOW! Sat. gave us the disco breakfast across from the hotel to start the day. A long bus ride to the middle of nowhere delivered us to where we had a good run in a large park on mostly single track trails. We slowed down some dirt bikers for a bit and all in all had a great trail. Then it was on to the farm for the apre, swimming in the green muck pond, dinner (great food) and the Mr. and Ms InterAM contests. Two long time contenders finally won, Asshole and Flicker. The rest of the night was just hanging out at the hotel. 5. Cardiff continually trying to sway me from GOA-Fat chance! Sun. we had the second round of the disco breakfast followed by more great runs. I wound up spending most of my time in an old strip mine, dirt surfing down the hills and finally running up a long stream. The crowning event of the weekend was the Funky to Formal Ball with Jill West and the Blues Attack in the Grand Ballroom. This was reminiscent of the Players Ball at the end of the Dr Detroit movie. It was anything goes (and it did) with a great band. This of course was followed by more partying in the 15th floor suites with Steamer doing carrier landings, a large group playing sex dice and another group singing songs till the wee wee hours. 7.
