Tips for Self-Employed
Taxpayers
TOP 10 LIST OF CONSUMER COMPLAINTS
If you are an independent contractor or
run your own business, there are a few
basic things to know when it comes to
your federal tax return. Here are six tips
you should know about income from
self-employment:
Data Breach Tops Consumer Complaints. Illinois Attorney General Lisa
Madigan released her annual top 10 list of consumer complaints for
2013 and categories dealing with data breach complaints topped the
list.
Self-employment income can include
income you received for part-time work.
This is in addition to income from your
regular job.
2. Identity Theft (fraudulent credit cards, utility accounts, bank fraud)
* You must file a Schedule C, Profit or
Loss from Business, or Schedule CEZ, Net Profit from Business, with
your Form 1040.
* You may have to pay self-employment
tax as well as income tax if you made
a profit. Self-employment tax includes
Social Security and Medicare taxes.
Use Schedule SE, Self-Employment
Tax, to figure the tax. Make sure to
file the schedule with your tax return.
* You may need to make estimated tax
payments. People typically make
these payments on income that is not
subject to withholding. You may be
charged a penalty if you do not pay
enough taxes throughout the year.
* You can deduct some expenses you
paid to run your trade or business.
You can deduct most business expenses in full, but some must be
’capitalized.’ This means you can
deduct a portion of the expense each
year over a period of years.
* You can deduct business costs only if
they are both ordinary and necessary.
An ordinary expense is one that is
common and accepted in your industry. A necessary expense is one that
is helpful and proper for your trade or
business. Visit the Small Business
and Self-Employed Tax Center on
IRS.gov for all your federal tax needs.
You can also get IRS tax forms and
publications on IRS.gov or by calling
800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).
5. Motor Vehicles/Used Auto Sales (as-is auto sales, financing,
warranties)
 Additional IRS Resources:
Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals
Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax
Publication 334, Tax Guide for Small Business
Publication 535, Business Expenses

The top 10, in order were:
1. Consumer Debt (mortgage lending, debt collections, credit cards)
3. Telecommunications (wireless service, local phone service, cable/
satellite)
4. Construction Home Improvement (remodeling, roofs, gutters)
6. Promotions and Schemes (sweepstakes, pyramid, work-at-home
scams)
7. Mail Order (internet purchases, catalog ordering, television/radio)
8. Fraud Against Business (consulting, directories, publications)
9. Motor Vehicle/Non Warranty Repair (collision/body/engines)
10. Travel (time shares, promotions, sales, travel agents)

FOR WOMEN ONLY!
The Chamber is launching a new networking group exclusively for
women. We are in the groundbreaking planning stages of this group
and our very first meeting is Wednesday, April 2 at the Chamber office
from 11:30 to 1:00pm. Come join us and see what this new group
has to offer!
Harper College for Business invites you to attend our
April Seminar: Managing Your Priorities
Rapid change, flatter organizational structures, and crossfunctional duties mean employees today must assume greater
responsibility for managing their own tasks. To do that
successfully, they need to be able to handle competing
priorities, shift gears smoothly, and coordinate and negotiate
responsibilities, schedules, and resources with others.
What You'll Learn: The activities in this module provide the
awareness and skills participants need to make better
decisions about their daily work. Participants learn techniques
that help them deal with complex interpersonal interactions,
build strong work relationships, and increase their overall
productivity, even in an environment in which changing
priorities is a daily reality.
Date: Friday, April 25, 2014
Time: 7:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Location: Wojcik Conference Center at Harper College.
Early registration fee: $149 - must register by April 16
Late registration fee: $179 - between April 17 - 22
Registration closed after April 22. Registration fee
includes continental breakfast and all seminar materials.

Conceal Carry:
Get Your Signs Now
The Illinois State Police announced on February 28 the
distribution of the first conceal carry permits in Illinois.
Illinois retailers are reminded that if you do NOT want
concealed guns carried into your business, you must post
specific signs at all entrances. The state approved signs can
be found at www.cc14illinois.com. The sign in its entirety will
measure 4 x 6 inches.
Additionally, the law allows carriers to store their firearms in
their vehicles in the parking lot. The firearm can only be
carried form the passenger compartment to the trunk and
vice-versa for purposes of storing upon arrival or retrieving
upon departure.
The entire law can be found at www.ilga.gov/legislation/
publicacts/98/PDF/098-0063.pdf.
In addition, FAQ’s regarding the law and other information
can be found at www.cc14illinois.com/ccw/Public/ISPFaq.
