4/12/12 6 Automating Retail Check Acceptance
The Client’s Perspective
Customers want payment options at the Point-of-Sale
Merchants need to accept and process checks
  Issues:
Paper checks create can be costly and time consuming
Checks represent higher risk for NSF’s and fraud
Checks need to be verified, reconciled, physically taken to a bank
for deposit and processed
Checks are not always a reliable form of payment and settlement
of funds can take several days
Banks charge high processing fees, and excessive hold time for
funds availability

Check Acceptance
Payliance has a suite of check readers and
imagers that allows Client’s to convert a paper
check at the point-of-sale.
Client accepts paper check, clicks a button
on their Gateway software and places the
check in the check reader
Check MICR information is captured off
the bottom of the check, or if an imager
is present, the check image is captured
Client keys in the dollar amount of check
and clicks submit
Gateway then receives the MICR and
dollar amount and submits the
information to the Automated Clearing
House (ACH) to process the transactions
4/12/12 9 Automated Check/ACH Process

Clients accept payments at the POS, over the phone, through the mail, or over
the Internet using terminals and/or a browser based VPOS solution provided by
Payliance.

Payment engine aggregates all payments into one reporting and processing
engine that can be accessed any time to see real-time reporting on all
transactions, setup and review Planned Payments, or process new payments.

This Demo account is enabled to process transactions but not to settle
them. This demo account allows you access to the Virtual Terminal, the
Recurring Manager, and the Transaction Reporting engine.
However, you may require additional technical integration if you will be
processing transactions directly from your website, ERP solution, or other
back office payment application. You will need to confirm the status of that
portion of your setup with your webmaster or technical contact.
If you are the webmaster you can access the technical integration
documents from within the gateway or from the web site. If you are logged
into the Gateway click on the help tab in the right hand corner of the
screen to access the integration documents, or follow this link:

transactions for processing.

protected by the strongest encryption methods and security protocols available. We
continue to develop new solutions to provide our Clients and their customers with
confidence and security.

Protecting Transaction Data – our Gateway uses the latest 256-bit Secure Sockets
Layer (SSL) technology for secure Internet Protocol (IP) transactions

Securing Customer Data - We employ industry leading encryption hardware and
software methods and security protocols to protect customer information. Our Gateway is
certified as compliant with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard and
with SAS 70

Preventing Fraud - Our Fraud Management Department is committed to providing
merchants with tools and best practices to prevent fraud. Industry initiatives such as ACH
and Check Verification, Address Verification Service (AVS) and Card Code Verification
(CCV/CVV2/CID) provide a high level of protection as part of our standard payment
gateway features. Our exclusive FRISKTM helps our Web and Retail merchants identify and
evaluate suspicious transactions with more then 70 additional Fraud and security features
Stopping Check Fraud
The Merchant Carries the Risk…
When a merchant accepts a check for payment, regulations place responsibility for
forgery and fraud losses on the Merchant, not the bank or the bank’s customers.
In addition to this exposure, there can be significant expenses and lost time
investigating the crime and trying to collect money owed

How Bad is the Problem?
The problem is so serious that the banks don't like to reveal the extent of the
problem. Estimates range from hundreds of millions to 10 billion dollars annually
The FBI tracks over 50,000 cases a year, but that is only the tip of the iceberg,
because the FBI mostly focuses on cases where the amount exceeds $100,000
In the last 4 years, Northern Trust Bank alone has detected more than 3 million
dollars worth of counterfeit checks

What do Criminals Look for?

Checks that are easy to reproduce using a color copier
Checks that are easy to tamper with
Closed Checking accounts
Stolen Checks and or Stolen Account and Routing numbers
Our Gateway is the first line of defense for merchants by deploying check and ACH
Verification solutions at the POS that can help stop Fraud.
