Last weekends Meguiar's Detail Seminar at Faulkner's Chevy was a delightful success. Phil and Valerie of Meguiar's did a great job and Chris Miller, Sales Mgr. and Bob McGarry, Service Mgr., did a great job of setting up and running the show. John Denning As you can see, the weather cooperated just fine and we had a decent turnout. Those previous Meguiar’s aficianados had the “I told you so” look on their face and the rest had to admit it was a good sales pitch for Faulkner’s hospitality and Meguiar’s fine products. I guess the vettes agreed cause they all looked better than when they arrived. Many thanks to the Faulkner staff for sponsoring this program and to Meguiar’s for the substance. Hope this may become an annual event—the timing just before Spring was perfect! ‘Vetter’s Letter Apr. 2010 Vol. 17, Iss. 04 Page 6 Senator Reynolds files bill naming the Corvette as the official state sports car Wednesday, February 3, 2010 National Corvette Museum News A state senator, from Bowling Green, Ky. just filed legislation to name the Corvette as the official state sports car of Kentucky. It’s probably a likely candidate because the Corvette’s role in Kentucky’s manufacturing and tourism make it a perfect fit for this honor. As you well know, Bowling Green in Warren County is the home of the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant and the National Corvette Museum. A bit of history first; the initial 300 vettes were hand-built in Flint, Michigan circa in 1953. But in 1954, Corvette production was relocated to St. Louis, and in 1981 it again moved, this time to Bowling Green, where it now employs more than 500 Kentuckians. On July 2, 1992, the one millionth Corvette was manufactured. The 50th anniversary was marked in June of 2003 with a special 50th anniversary Corvette package. The Corvette plant received a number of awards in 2009 including the J.D. Power’s Top GM Model, Best in Segment and the Bronze Plant Award. The plant itself draws about 50,000 tourists, while the museum boasts approximately 150,000 visitors a year. The plant has partnered with the National Corvette Museum to enable Corvette enthusiasts the opportunity to watch their own dream car being built and to take a personalized tour of the facility. In state Senator Mike Reynolds interview, he said “Bowling Green is becoming more of a tourist destination. The National Corvette Museum is a major part of that and is a definite drawing card for the traveling public. Drawing attention to our community and the Corvette’s unique role in our American heritage can only boost economic development for our area. The Corvette has become a tangible symbol of our Commonwealth, and I’m excited to make that symbolism official.” Hopefully, the voting process in the state legislature won’t use reconciliation. Pennsylvania countered with a request to be represented by a used Ford pickup. 9.81 Second Quarter Mile Vette At the Maryland Raceway, in December of last year, a Lingenfelter modified ZR1 ran 9.81 seconds in the quarter with a top speed of 145.74 mph. Modified with supercharger, 4 inch air intake, ported throttle body, heat exchanger, air cooler reservoir, CCW aluminum wheels, racing tires, and 109-octane unleaded gasoline. Using just stock exhaust, it dyno-ed 740 hp. and 720 ft/lbs of torque at the rear wheels. The stock clutch lifts the front wheels right off the ground. It passed everything but the gas station. Oh yeah, it also utilizes a Toyota Prius accelerator pedal. Runaway Toyota Prius owner is a Corvette Owner And speaking of Toyota, the guy that called 911 with a stuck Prius gas pedal that got so much media attention at 94 mph is a Corvette owner. In the Fox News clip, he was adorned with a Corvette Owners Club jacket. Yep, go ahead and send your money to Japan; it’ll help the US economy! Page 7 ‘Vetter’s Letter Apr. 2010 Vol. 17, Iss. 04 NEW For 2010! The new 2010 Corvette lineup is getting bigger and better. The Coupe and Convertible are both included with an LS3 V8 at 430 hp. The ZO6 is back boasting an LS7 rated at 505 hp. Returning is the brand-new Grand Sport and ZR1, with a supercharged LS9 6.2 liter V-8. New amenities include a Torch Red color (just in case you like being easily spotted by the law enforcement community), cashmere/leather interior, standard side airbags, ZO6 power sport seat options, a reengineered 6-speed paddle shift control, and launch control which optimizes throttle performance based upon your driving preference (no aviation mode yet). Guess its time to get down to Faulkner and check them out! WHAT”S YOUR OPINION ? Here’s a way to get your thoughts on car shows and what attracts you to go to a certain one. Hello, My name is Rachael Hendrickson and I am currently a senior at Penn State University. A few of my classmates and I are running a Public Relations campaign for Stocker Chevrolet of State College, PA and I was wondering if we could possibly steal a few moments of your time. Stocker Chevrolet hosts a car show in May called the "Spring Spectacular" in partnership with the USA-1 Corvette Club. We are running the campaign to help publicize the event, and we would like to get some insight as to why members of car clubs choose to enter their vehicles in shows and how they choose which shows to attend. I have attached the link to a brief 6 question survey at the bottom of this e-mail and I was wondering if you would mind forwarding it to the members of your club and ask them for their participation. It should only take 5 minutes or less and your feedback would be very valuable! Thank you so much for your time, Rachael Hendrickson Here is the link...please answer all questions! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FYBXLG3 ‘Vetter’s Letter Apr. 2010 Vol. 17, Iss. 04 Page 8 National Corvette Museum News Bowling Green, KY Chronology of Events in the History of Corvettes Here’s a nice web link from the National Corvette Museum if you wish to find out historical facts based on the year of manufacture. I hope all our members are ready for a new year of shows, cruises, seminars and all things corvette. As of this writing I have already sent out registration forms for three upcoming shows. Our own Springfest is coming up fast and I hope our members come out and support the show as well as volunteer for the show. Some upcoming shows have limited room so make sure you get your registration forms out early. We can only have activities if we have members who are willing to lead them. If you are planning to go to a show, cruise or just want to get a few cars together for a fun run get a event signup sheet from one of our officers or just call up some members and get a group together. Leading a event or group is easy and I have always found there is more fun in getting a group of vettes together. Hope you made it to our club detail seminar on 3/20 at Faulkner's. Brad Orey ( EACC president) and I have been keeping in touch and try to include both clubs in area events when possible. Jeff Mohring is our new events chairman and is actively keeping us informed of upcoming events. If anyone receives info or knows of a upcoming show or function please let Jeff know so he can display it at meetings. Thanks to the Springfest committee for all the work they are putting into our show. Let's get our cars cleaned off and get ready for the new season. SPEED TV again broadcast multi-day live coverage and did its part to get snowed-in car enthusiasts back in the spirit. Typical of years past, featured vehicles were auctioned both Friday and Saturday evenings. The economy played its part, too! There did not seem to be as many high-profile feature vehicles and prices were down in general. While 6 of the top 10 vehicles were either Mustangs or Shelby Cobras, Corvettes still faired prominently in the bidding action. The Top GM was #4 overall (Lot #1265), a 1935 Cadillac Fleetwood Imperial Convertible Series 40 at $302,500. The Top Chevy was #11 overall (Lot #1286), a 1956 Bel Air Custom Convertible at $247,500. The top Corvette was #18 overall (Lot #1278.1), a 1958 silver blue convertible which hammered down $220,000. With respect to Corvettes, the solid axles and mid-years were still the most coveted. In total, 89 Vettes crossed the auction block at Scottsdale. One of the top 5 Vettes was Lot#1318, a 2008 Limited Edition 427 bearing serial #427/427. This was the only Z06 available in Crystal Red Metallic Tint Coat. Sporting a 7.0L 427cid LS7 V8, 100% of the $200,000 auction price was donated to the American Red Cross. Possibly the “Corvette Deal of the Event” was the double-auction of Lot #1320+1320.1 — a 2-car deal including a 2010 ZR1 with less than 100 original miles PLUS a 1995 ZR1 for a grand total of $82,500!!! (Come on folks, that’s like getting a sweet deal on a BRAND NEW ZR1 and being given a “daily driver” for free!!!)
