WHAT YOU NEED:
•

•
1 tablespoon butter, or spray oil
6 whole egg roll wrappers
1-1/2 cups sugar
7 teaspoons cornstarch
2 whole large eggs
2 whole egg whites
2 pt Raspberries
1 ½ cup lemon juice
1-1/2 tbsp finely grated fresh lemon zest
2 tablespoon confectioner’s sugar, for sprinkling
WHAT TO DO:
1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Prepare the tartlet shells: Lightly spray
the tartlet pans with spray oil (or brush with melted butter).
2. Use the eggroll wrappers to line the pans, pushing the dough into
the ridges in the sides. Trim off the excess with scissors. Lightly
spray the insides of the tartlet shells with oil or brush with butter.
Bake until crisp and golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes, or as needed.
Transfer the shells to a wire rack to cool.
3. The tartlets can be made ahead of time, but they must be assembled
at the last minute. Store the shells in an airtight container, and the
filling in the refrigerator.
4. Meanwhile, prepare the lemon filling: Combine the sugar and
cornstarch in a mixing bowl and whisk to mix. Whisk in the eggs and
egg whites. Bring the lemon juice and lemon zest to a boil in a heavy
saucepan. Whisk this mixture in a thin stream into the egg mixture.
Return the mixture to the pan and bring to a boil, whisking steadily.
5. Reduce the heat and simmer for 1 minute or until thickened. Transfer
the lemon mixture to a bowl and let cool to room temperature.
6. Not more than 5 minutes before serving, spoon the lemon filling
into the crusts. Arrange the fresh raspberries on top and sprinkle the
tartlets with confectioners’ sugar. Serve at once.

At 8,000 ft of elevation, we can see the snow-capped mountains in
the distance while we hike into the wooded hills and sloping meadows
near our home. Buffalo tend to their young, while elk and deer search for
flavorful grasses in nearby yards. We sit at our window and laugh at the
antics of squirrels and birds, and listen to pine trees sway in the wind. We
especially enjoy the hummingbirds. Usually they are hard to see unless
you have a feeder and sure enough, 10 minutes after we hung it up, they
started coming in droves. It is truly fascinating to watch these incredible
birds swoop in, take a sip of sugar and buzz off to find more food.
Their unique wingbeat mimics the shape of the infinity sign, ∞, and
they are capable of hovering and backwards flight. They have the ability
to go backwards yet they focus on the sweetest fruit and nectar ahead.
They are intensely curious and focused. Amazing migrators, some hummingbirds are known to wing their way as far as 2000 miles to reach
their destination.
We looked up the symbolism of hummingbirds.
According to whats-your-sign.com, “By observing the Hummingbird,
we see they are seemingly tireless. Always actively seeking the sweetest nectar, they remind us to forever seek out the good in life and the
beauty in each day…The Hummingbird animal totem is a messenger of
hope and jubilation.”
That’s a great message to remember each day while we enjoy the
trills and thrills of the hummingbirds this summer. They teach us to keep
moving forward, enjoy the beauty of the day and be persistent in our
pursuits as we savor each and every drop of nectar given us.
P.S. There is a great book on the subject of animal totems, called “Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small,”
by Ted Andrews. IsisBooks.com carries it, along with several other bookstores and Amazon.

Peace Prayers
Dalai Lama Leads Ritual
Kalachakra for World Peace
For the first time, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will
confer the Kalachakra for World Peace ritual in
our nation’s capital this month. “We believe it is
capable of creating... peace of spirit, and therefore
peace in the world,” he says.
The Capital Area Tibetan Association is sponsoring the event, intended to inspire harmonious
relationships and abiding peace in the hearts of all people, in gratitude to those
that have supported the preservation of Tibet’s rich cultural heritage. Together,
participants will act to promote the strength of compassion and wisdom so
urgently needed to reduce conflict in today’s world.
The 11-day event launches July 6, the 76th birthday of the Dalai Lama,
recipient of 84 humanitarian commendations, including the Nobel Peace Prize.
The occasion will begin with site consecration, chanting prayers and creation of
a sand mandala by the monks of Namgyal Monastery. The Dalai Lama will then
teach the foundations of Buddhism for three days, followed by the Kalachakra
ritual dance and three days of empowerment. The ceremony will close with
prayers on July 16.
For information and tickets, visit Kalachakra2011.com.
Peace Index
States Earn New Peace Index
The inaugural United States Peace Index (USPI), created by
the international think-tank, the Institute for Economics and
Peace, provides the first-ever ranking of the 50 U.S. states
based on their levels of peace. The USPI shows Maine is
the most peaceful U.S. state, with New York, California and
Texas recording the highest increases in peace since 1991.
The USPI report reveals that peace in the United States
has improved since 1995, primarily driven by a substantial
decrease in homicide and violent crime. Peace is significantly
correlated with economic opportunity, education and health,
high school graduation rate, access to health insurance and
the percent of infant mortality.
The 10 most peaceful states identified are Maine, New
Hampshire, Vermont, Minnesota, North Dakota, Utah, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Iowa and Washington. Maine topped
the list of states on three of the five USPI indicators: number
of violent crimes, number of police officers and incarceration numbers (the homicide rate and ease of access to small
arms are the other two).
Regionally, southern states were the least peaceful, while
states in the Northeast were most peaceful. The Midwest and
West were on a par, with midwestern states being slightly more peaceful.

Hipster Farmers
More Young Adults Put their
Hands to the Plow
Conditions are perfect for a new
generation of farmers in their 20s
and 30s that distrust industrial food
systems, are intent on meaningful
employment and may well succeed
an aging farm populace. More are
starting small farms and joining
networks of like-minded agriculture
enthusiasts, according to a recent
story in The New York Times, and
the U.S. Department of Agriculture
wants to transform the budding
trend into a fundamental shift. Last
year, under a provision in the 2008
Farm Bill, the department distributed
$18 million to educate young growers and ranchers across the country.
Garry Stephenson, coordinator
of the Small Farms Program at Oregon State University, says he has
not seen so much interest among
young people in decades. “They’re
young, energetic and idealist, and
they’re willing to make the sacrifices,” he says.
According to the USDA’s 2007
Census of Agriculture, farmers over
55 currently own more than half of
the country’s farmland. According to
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack,
the hope is that some of the beginning farmers will graduate to stakes
in midsize and large farms as older
farmers retire.

Friends Can Add Sizzle
to Your Romance
N
eed to spice up a romantic relationship that’s in the doldrums? A
Wayne State University study reveals
dating couples that integrate other
couples into their social lives are more
likely to have happier and more satisfying romantic relationships.
In the study—named When Harry and
Sally Met Dick and Jane—Assistant Professor of Psychology Richard B. Slatcher,
Ph.D., worked with 60 dating couples
in a controlled laboratory setting to better understand how couples form friendships
and how these friendships affect each couple’s relationship. Each couple was paired
with another couple and given a set of questions to discuss as a group. Half of the
group, dubbed the fast friends group, was given high-disclosure questions to spark
intense personal discussion; the other half received typical small-talk questions.
“We discovered that those couples that were placed in the fast friends group felt
closer to the couples they interacted with and were more likely to meet up with
them again during the following month,” says Slatcher. “We also learned that these
same couples felt that these new friendships put a spark in their own relationships,
and they felt much closer to their romantic partners.” They also reported learning
new things about their partners through this novel experience.
Watermelon Takes a Slice
Out of High Blood Pressure
S
ummer-sweet watermelon is known to be high in fiber and nutrients and low in
calories. Now, evidence from a pilot study led by food scientists at Florida State
University suggests that eating watermelon might also help dispel pre-hypertension, a precursor to cardiovascular disease.
“Even better, it may prevent the progression from pre-hypertension to hypertension in the first place,” says lead researcher Arturo Figueroa, an assistant professor
at the university. A University of Illinois study estimates that as
many as 60 percent of U.S. adults have elevated tension levels.
Why might this large-size fruit pose such a benefit? “Watermelon is the richest edible natural source of L-citrulline,
which is closely related to L-arginine, the amino acid required for the formation of [the body’s own natural] nitric
oxide, essential to the regulation of vascular tone and
healthy blood pressure,” says Figueroa. Once in the
body, the L-citrulline naturally converts into L-arginine.
The scientists caution that consuming L-arginine
as a dietary supplement isn’t a good option, because
it can cause nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort; watermelon, on the other hand, provides a safe
delivery system. It also has been shown to help reduce
serum glucose levels. All of this makes watermelon a
“functional food,” because it offers health-promoting or
disease-preventing properties beyond its delicious taste.

Katia I. Meier, MD
and The Clear Sky Medical Team
INTEGRATING CONVENTIONAL AND
NATURAL MEDICINE FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH
Introducing: The “Metabolic Reset Diet”
Clear Sky Medical now offers a new, fast and very
effective Fat Loss Program.
Problems with hormonal signaling are core issues
related to weight gain and faulty metabolism. Our
master endocrine (hormone) gland, the hypothalamus,
located in the brain, sends and receives hormonal
messages to and from outlying endocrine organs such as the
thyroid, sex glands, adrenals, etc., and also each and every cell.
Imbalanced hormone levels created by an imbalanced diet,
high stress, increasing fat stores and inflammation, desensitize
the hypothalamus and affect hormonal signaling. Dietary and
environmental toxins cause further damage, all resulting in a
frustrating weight loss battle.
Most regular diets never achieve the desired fat loss in the
dreaded areas around the midsection and under arms, etc.
Clear Sky Medical’s new Metabolic Reset Diet has been showing
success in doing just that by restoring hypothalamic function
and hormonal communication. The protocol does require strict
adherence to a specific calorie-controlled diet for 3-6 weeks and
a monitored maintenance phase for another 6 weeks. Specific
homeopathic remedies tailored to the individual patient and other
supplements that control hunger and help ‘reset’ the hypothalamus
and stimulate metabolic function accompany the program. Weight
loss results are very impressive – 0.5 – 1.0 lbs per day, and mostly
from FAT! Follow-up with bio-impedance analysis, a tool that
measures exact changes in body composition, confirms this. This
diet also couples as a “Cleanse” and will teach you new dietary
behavior for life to keep the weight off! It is suitable for people who
have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight, are dedicated to make it
work, and are in general good health.
This month we are offering a free 15–minute consultation with
our certified master nutritionist, to learn more, call 303-790-7860!

Living a Simple,
Sustainable Life
By Trish Bradley
W
e talk about living a simple
life, but how do we even
begin? It’s a state of living
simply. Here are a few pointers:
First, reduce your energy usage. If
you can, reduce the amount of square
footage you live in. If you can afford to live in a 3000 sq. ft. home and
truly only need to live in a 2000 sq. ft.
home, you will, of course, reduce your
energy usage by 1/3.
Have an energy audit (some are as
low as $120) to determine where you
are losing heat or cold in your home.
Your homes’ “envelope” is the most
important factor. Insulation, windows,
running systems…an audit will tell
you how tight your home is and how
well insulated.
Solar can benefit you in many ways:
how is your house positioned relative
to the sun? Can you utilize passive solar applications? Can you reduce solar
hitting your home when the sun is at its
hottest? Add eaves over the south facing windows for summer sun control.
Add appropriate window coverings to
control hot/cold at various times of the
day and year.
How about a small array of solar
panels for your water heater? The
world is starting to look at solar panels
as a beautiful sight.
The next time you need new appliances or electronics, purchase Energy
Star. You can reduce energy usage by
two-thirds. If your heater is an old
60% efficient model, you could save
up to $1200 a year with a 90% efficient model.
It’s all somewhat like cutting up or
freezing your credit cards…it hurts in
the beginning but a just a short time,
you’re extremely happy you did it.

Horse Design, specializing in green,
sustainable and renewable design. She

Change Your Mood with
Mindfulness Meditation
By Kathleen Higgins
P
eace of mind
and relaxation
may not be
the only benefits
we derive from
meditation. According
to a study* conducted
by Massachusetts
General Hospital
(MGH), participating in an 8-week mindfulness meditation
program may cause measurable changes in the brain regions
associated with memory, mood, empathy and stress.
Mindfulness is a form of meditation which focuses on
a non-judgmental awareness of feelings, sensations and
state of mind. While meditation is usually associated with
cultivating inner peace and easing stress, “practitioners
have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive
and psychological benefits that persist throughout the
day,” says Sara Lazar, PhD, of the MGH Psychiatric
Neuroimaging Research Program, the study’s senior author.
Researchers are discovering that permanent changes to the
brain’s structure may underlie “reported improvements and
people are not just feeling better because they are spending
time relaxing.”
In the current study, 16 study participants who had
never meditated before were enrolled in an 8-week
mindfulness meditation program. MR images were taken
of their brains two weeks before and two weeks after the
program. In addition to meditating in a group, participants
listened to audio recordings for practice and were asked to
practice on their own.
Compared to a non-meditating control group, at the end
of the program there was increased density in the graymatter of the hippocampus, the area of the brain involved
in learning and memory. There was also a change in the
structures associated with self-awareness, compassion and
introspection. A decrease in the density of the amygdala,
which plays a role is anxiety and stress, seems to prove a
decrease in stress levels reported by study participants. This
suggests that the benefits of mindfulness meditation are
ongoing and perhaps even permanent, and could relieve
the symptoms of many stress-related disorders such as Post
Traumatic Stress.
Kathleen Higgins is owner of Deer Creek Counseling,
where mindfulness meditation is one of the many tools they
teach to help clients live happier, healthier lives. 303-6187702. Meditation classes forming soon.

The #1 Block to
Your Success
By Deberah Bringelson
W
hen fear creeps
into your life and
overtakes your emotions, you send mixed
messages to your clients,
your boss, the Universe. Your mouth and
mind say, “Yes! I want
success, I want more
money, I want a great
life!” At the same time, your energy and your gut screams,
“NO! I don’t believe I can have it! I don’t deserve it! Don’t
give it to me!”
Guess what? That mixed message is destroying your success – big time!
It’s like listening to the radio during a thunderstorm.
Doesn’t come in so well, does it? Fear is an electrical storm
in your life. Like the radio, you cannot “receive” the signals and abundance that you desire…..and deserve. FEAR
is the number one thing that stands between you and what
you want.
The great news is that you are in 100% control. You
have the ability to kick this roadblock out of your life. The
most important thing to remember about eliminating your
fears is to release them. Don’t fight or resist them. That
only makes them stronger. Acknowledge and allow them to
inspire you to change whatever is worrying you.
When fear has you in its clutches, it can be paralyzing.
Here’s one of my favorite tricks for soothing the mind and
body and allowing light to shine through the storm.
The next time fear grabs you, stop immediately. Recognize that you’re feeling fear because you thinking about or
imagining something that you don’t want. If you change
your thoughts to focus on something that you love, you
change the energy.
Relive intense, joyful moments in your life. Allow those
feelings to wash over you; love and comfort to radiate out
from your heart and into the situation that was causing
distress. Flood the fear with new energy and focus.
With that release comes a renewed ability to recognize
previously hidden solutions, to take action, or find additional help.
Deberah Bringelson is a published author and career
specialist. Retired from the corporate world, Deberah
teaches clients and students all over the world how to
make a great income living their own dreams and passions.

THE STRESS
AID KIT
Harlane Chase, M.A., C.M.T.
ISBN 978 1 4327 5631 4
W
e all need a
vacation –
sometimes
especially right after a
vacation when we’re
thrown back into our
hectic work and home
schedules trying to catch
up. Here’s a book by local author Harlane Chase
packed full of ideas about
how to take a vacation
from stress – and you can
use these ideas at home,
in your office, actually
anywhere!
Harlane Chase is a
stress management workshop facilitator, counselor, massage therapist and Reiki Master. She incorporates
her experiences of the last 25 years in this delightful book.
Says Chase, “Instead of letting stress drown you in a sea
of negativity, you can choose to sail above it all with laugh-
ter, artistic expression gratitude, healthy venting, simple
meditation, massage, breathing techniques, stretching,
nutrition, physical exercise, inspiration and various other
positive, playful ways to uplift your energy and attitude.”
Indeed, this short, sweet and to-the-point book can help
you to create your own real ‘treasure chest’ of toys, techniques and tools to soothe your stress and be able to look
at your life in a playful way, ready to go with the flow while
getting all the stuff you need to do, done.
Each chapter in The Stress Aid Kit focuses on a specific
technique of stress relief in an entertaining and totally
accessible way. For example, the chapter entitled ‘Gratitude’ highlights how recognizing your blessings even
while in the midst of a busy day can lift your spirits and
take a weight off your emotions, giving you a clearer
perspective on what is really important for that day and in
that moment. The author suggests creating a daily ‘gratitude journal.’
In addition to techniques to calm your emotions, Chase
shares quick and easy to do yoga breathing techniques and
body stretches to let the stress flow out of your muscles and
away from you. And at the end of each chapter, she gives
ideas about things you might want to include in your own
physical stress aid kit – toys, paints, gazoos, feathers – objects that represent for you ways you take care of yourself
and that you will actually use as tools for stress relief.
Karen Charboneau-Harrison is the owner of
Isis Books, Gifts and Healing Oasis in Englewood. Harlane Chase will be appearing at Isis
on Saturday, July 9, 3-5pm to demonstrate the
techniques in her book and share the toys in her
Stress Aid Kit treasure box.Call 303-761- 8627 to register.

Treating Sinusitis with an
Antibiotic Alternative
By Steven R. Frank
F
or many sufferers of chronic
sinusitis, mainstream treatment
options fail to adequately address
the underlying causes of the condition, and have often caused as many
problems as they seem to solve. Painful
surgery creates scar tissue which may
inhibit the body’s immune response to
pathogens in the sinus mucosa. Systemic antibiotics are a poor choice for
multiple reasons. Fortunately, there are
“healthier” and very effective treatment
options available.
The sinuses are the first line of
defense as they filter and trap the
airborne particles of virus, bacteria and
fungus. Everyone faces this chronic
bombardment, but a strong immune
system prevents infection. Infection occurs when these pathogens overwhelm
the immune response due to reasons
which vary for each individual. Once
an infection has taken hold, the offending pathogen also releases toxic waste
material which may cause inflammation, general malaise, toothaches and
headaches associated with pressure
and drainage problems.
Systemic antibiotics are a poor solution because they don’t kill fungi or
viruses. Bacteria are capable of flourishing on the surface of a fungus, out of
the reach of an antibiotic. Furthermore,
antibiotics also destroy the body’s
beneficial bacteria, or flora, leading to
a further compromised immune system,
digestive problems and yeast infections.
Ideally, an anti-fungal, anti-viral,
anti-bacterial agent would be applied
directly to the sinuses in a protocol that
effectively neutralizes the infection.
An inhaled nasal spray would follow
the same path as inhaled pathogens,
killing them upon contact. A neti pot
is a small container with a nozzle that
is used to pour a solution directly into
one nostril at a time where it can thor-

oughly bathe the sinus before exiting
the other nostril. Both of these methods would need to be repeated often
enough during the day to keep ahead
of the replicating infection. This can be
made more difficult by an increased
mucosal flow greater than one liter per
day in someone with an infection. For
the nasal spray, reapplication every
20-30 minutes is often necessary. A
neti pot flush provides a more thorough
soaking and still needs to be done
several times. Unfortunately, a simple
saline solution only removes the surface fungus and bacteria and will not
remove the entire population.
The agent that safely and effectively
destroys the offending virus, fungus and
bacteria is an enhanced silver colloid
solution. It is used in amounts that are
10,000 times less than the amount required to cause argyria, where the skin
can take on a blue color. Additionally,
very little solution is ingested with the
use of a neti pot. Clinical research also
demonstrates that Polysorbate 20 aides
in the penetration of the bacterial cell
walls and that 30-40ppm concentration
is necessary and sufficient. Studies confirm that higher concentrations of these
compounds are not more effective.

A
genetically modified organism (GMO) is one that has
been altered using the DNA
of other species including bacteria,
viruses, plants, insects, animals or
even humans. The global scientific
community has been warning that
genetically modified (GM) foods can
create unpredictable, hard-to-detect
side effects, including allergies, toxins,
new diseases, and nutritional problems. They urged long-term safety
studies, but were ignored. The Food
and Drug Administration has worked
closely with biotech corporations such
as Monsanto to list these ingredients
as “generally regarded as safe.” Initially introduced to the global market
in 1991, they were then approved for
U.S. consumption in 1996.
According to the Institute for Responsible Technology, the most common GM foods grown in the US are
soybeans (91%), sugar beets (90%),
cotton (71%), canola (88%), corn
(85%) and Hawaiian papaya (50%).
Foods that may contain GM ingredients
range from bread and cereal to infant
formula and salad dressing. For a more
detailed list of these and “hidden” GM
ingredients, visit ResponsibleTechnology.org/gmo-basics/gmos-in-food. It is
estimated that up to 80% of all packaged food contains GM ingredients.
Thanks to labeling laws, you may
know exactly how much salt, fat and
carbohydrate are in the food you eat,
but you will not see GM ingredients
anywhere on the label. The biotech

and food industries have spent millions of dollars to fight initiatives in
California and Washington to require
this labeling. In the words of those
in-industry reps, the general public
“won’t understand” what they are and
will be “needlessly frightened” by this
information. Currently the only way to
avoid GM foods is to buy organic or
certified non-GMO.
As the 60’s gave way to the 70’s, the
soy bean was heralded as the solution
for the growing population because it
could be made into many imitations of
real food: bacon-flavored soy, “meat”,
milk, baby formula, protein drinks,
and much more. Soy was seen as a
health food because it was low in fat
compared to the foods it replaced and
its consumption soared.
Dr. Kayla Daniel, author of The
Whole Soy Story, points out thousands
of studies linking soy to malnutrition,
digestive distress, immune system
breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, cancer, heart disease
and reproductive disorders including infertility. The list of dangers has
grown to include breast cancer, brain
damage, infant abnormalities, thyroid
disorders, kidney stones, immune system impairment, and severe or even
potentially fatal food allergies. Nearly
20 percent of U.S. infants are currently fed soy formula with associated
consumption of GMO products.
In his book The Biotech Century,
Jeremy Rifkin states, “Our way of life
is likely to be more fundamentally
transformed in the next several decades
than in the previous one thousand
years...Tens of thousands of novel
transgenic bacteria, viruses, plants
and animals could be released into

releases, however, could wreak havoc
with the planet’s biospheres.” Many
other scientists and physicians have
expressed similar concerns. Over 800
scientists and doctors from 84 countries
have signed The World Scientist Open
Letter to all governments calling for a
ban on the patenting of life-forms and
emphasizing the very grave hazards
of GMOs, genetically-modified seeds
and GM foods. This was submitted to
the UN, World Trade Organization and
US Congress. The Union of Concerned
Scientists has similarly expressed its
scientific reservations. The prestigious
medical journal, Lancet, published
an article on the research of Arpad
Pusztai showing potentially significant
harms of GMOs, and Britain’s Medical
Association called for an outright
ban of genetically-modified foods
and labeling of the same in countries
where they still exist. Approximately
95% of political representatives
from 130 countries insisted on new
precautionary approaches in the
drafting of the Cartagena Protocol on
Biosafety.
On a brighter note, soy can be
incredibly healthful if it is organic,
non-GMO, and properly fermented.
These foods include Tempeh, a
fermented soybean cake with a firm
texture and nutty, mushroom-like
flavor; Miso, a fermented soybean
paste with a salty, buttery texture
(commonly used in miso soup);
Natto, fermented soybeans with a
sticky texture and strong, cheese-like
flavor; and even soy sauce which
is traditionally made by fermenting
soybeans, salt and enzymes.

The Beauty of
SUMMER BOREDOM
Recapturing the Golden Days of Childhood
by Lisa Gromicko
Remember those endless hours of imaginative play during your youth—tree
climbing, making mud pies, flying kites, fishing, building forts/tree houses/lemonade stands, swimming, watching clouds, playground swinging, tea parties,
making and then launching sailboats in the creek, catching fireflies/butterflies/
frogs, playing jacks and pickup sticks, jumping rope, hopscotch, rolling down
hills, daisy chains, skipping rocks, backyard camping, neighborhood baseball
games (with self-made rules), twilight games of hide ‘n’ seek and flashlight tag?
T
he summers of childhood are
potent, enabling children to find
their personal bliss and cultivate
interests and memories that can last a
lifetime. The gifts of less-structured summer days are precious, allowing time
and space for the possibility of magical
activities. Both children and parents
benefit from unscheduled breathing
room to revisit the forces of creativity
and restore resiliency.
Yet, according to a University of
Michigan study, today’s children have as
much as 12 hours less free time
per week than 30 years ago. Kim
John Payne, author of Simplicity
Parenting – Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise
Calmer, Happier, and More
Secure Kids, urges par-
16
MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com
ents to simplify their children’s schedules, to establish for them, “ islands of
being, in the torrent of constant doing.”
We all require downtime to function
well. Payne maintains that, “Rest nurtures
creativity, which nurtures activity. Activity nurtures rest, which sustains creativity. Each draws from and contributes to
the other.”
More, boredom is a gift for children,
“ a rare fuel to propel them forward,”
writes Nancy Blakey, a columnist for
Seattle’s Child magazine.
Bonnie Harris, author of Confident
Parents, Remarkable Kids, cites a lack of
boredom in children today as the reason
that many graduates flounder in the
“real” world. Boredom works to spark
the discovery of one’s own passions, inner resources, ingenuity and ability to be
self-directed—all critical lifetime skills.
Overscheduling often substitutes
stimulation for experiencing self-discoveries that unlock the tremendous stored
potential of a child’s inner resources
and imagination. Remarks Payne, “A
child who doesn’t experience leisure—
or better yet, boredom—will always be
looking for external stimulation, activity
or entertainment… [and] a culture of
compulsion and instant gratification.
What also grows in such a culture? Addictive behaviors.”
So, how do we find our way back to
those simpler days? Richard Louv, author
of Last Child in the Woods, likes, “The
dugout in the weeds or leaves beneath a
backyard willow, the rivulet of a seasonal
creek, even the ditch between a front
yard and the road—all of these places are
entire universes to a young child. Expeditions to the mountains or national parks
often pale, in a child’s eyes, in comparison with the mysteries of the ravine at the
end of the cul-de-sac.” He recommends
allowing children the time to be in nature
to take walks, listen, play and learn. Time
in nature allows the senses to become
enlivened again.
Sue Palmer, author of Toxic Childhood and 21st Century Boys, observes,
“The loss of outdoor play and everyday
adventures is particularly significant
for children who have a tendency to be
easily distracted or impulsive.”
One of the biggest benefits of a slow
summer, for everyone, is ‘play’ itself.
There is compelling evidence of the
essential need for this age-old childhood pasttime. So, encourage children
to engage in the simple pleasures that
will potentially create and strengthen
the most glorious, blissful and ‘boring’
memories of their childhood summers—
and we’ll likely rekindle our own.

childhood educator for 16 years and

Stand Up
Paddling
No Surf Required
by Lauressa Nelson

W
hile some frustrated commuters are inching
along on rush hour highways,
hoping to afterward work off
stress at overcrowded gyms,
others are stopping off at the
nearest lake, river or bay for a
workout that many call therapeutic. Promoted by Olympic
athletes, moms and septuagenarians alike as an effective
total body workout and mental release, stand up paddling,
or SUP, is the fastest-growing
sport across the nation, according to the Outdoor Industry Association.
18
Stand up paddling was first
developed by improvisational
Hawaiian “beach boys,” that would
stand on surfboards and use outrigger
paddles to navigate alongside tourists
learning how to surf. However, the
sport can be enjoyed with or without
waves, or wind on virtually any
body of water because the paddler,
rather than Mother Nature, provides
propulsion. It’s luring enthusiasts of
other water sports as well; surfers,
kiteboarders and windsurfers
appreciate new opportunities to
get on the water more often, while
canoeists and kayakers enjoy the
alternative of standing.
SUP is equally adored by nonathletes. “This isn’t the kind of sport
that requires a lot of lessons to enjoy,”
advises Jeff Robinson, owner of Olde
Naples Surf Shop, in Naples, Florida,
who offers a 15-minute tutorial on the
basics with each rental.
Exercise in Disguise
“One of the best aspects of SUP
is that it is low impact, making
MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com
it a lifetime sport,” emphasizes
David Rose, owner of Paddleboard
Orlando. In fact, that’s why just
about anyone over the age of
5 can participate. The paddler
controls the speed and intensity of
the experience, from recreational
cruising to aerobic athletic training.
“We call it exercise in disguise,
because there’s so much going on
that you don’t realize when you’re
doing it,” explains Mike Muir,
president of Riviera Paddlesurf,
in San Clemente, California. The
54-year-old took up SUP after a
hip replacement and credits it for
relieving him of chronic lower back
pain, as well as excess pounds.
“It’s the cardio and calorieburning equivalent of swimming
or running,” explains Brody Welte,
owner of Stand Up Fitness, in St.
Petersburg, Florida. “But unlike
either of those, SUP combines
low-impact and weight-bearing
exercise; and it includes balance
and strength training.”
“My balance has improved 100
percent; I can stand on a board
today that I could not stand on
one year ago,” affirms 73-year-old
renowned surfer and board shaper
Mickey Muñoz, of Capistrano,
California, who paddles with his
65-pound dog aboard.
More than a Workout
Payoffs, however, go well beyond
the physical. SUP fans that
characterize it as a great escape
from their daily milieu mention
social, psychological and spiritual
benefits, as well.
“When you’re out paddling,
it’s easy to find solitude,” muses
Hawaiian-born Dave Chun, founder
of Kialoa Paddles, in Bend, Oregon.
He suggests that its Hawaiian roots
imbue stand up paddling with a
spirit of aloha, humility and respect.
At the same time, “It’s one of the
few sports that allows people to
maintain a conversation,” says Dan
Gavere, co-creator of SUPInstruction.com. Having discovered SUP
in the paddling mecca of Oregon’s
Columbia Gorge, he considers it an
ideal family recreational sport.
The length, width and thickness of paddle boards
determine their degree of maneuverability and gliding
characteristics. At about 30 inches wide and four to
five inches thick, beginner boards for use in flat water
average 10’6’’ long and 25 pounds for females, 11’5”
long and 28 pounds for males. Paddles are typically six
to 10 inches taller than the paddler.
In any case, the activity remains mentally engaging
because the standing position allows views in every
direction, including into the water. “It’s like walking on
water. You really get to see what’s around you,” observes
Shelly Strazis, a 43-year-old Long Beach resident who
began paddling after having multiple accident-related
surgeries on her left knee and right shoulder.
“It’s such a relaxing workout. I used to mountain bike,
but I can’t do that with the kids,” explains Francine Adams,
the mother of 5-year-old twins. “I’m afraid of waves and
some ocean creatures, but these boards are so stable that it
doesn’t matter.”
After her first SUP outing with a moms’ group, this
Orlando, Florida, resident introduced her husband to the
sport. Within three months, the couple had purchased their
own equipment. They now paddle together with one of
their twins on each of their boards.
Adams adds, “As part of our vacation planning now, we
scout locations where we can bring our boards.”
Most likely, the Adams family will be able to enjoy
their boards almost anywhere in the country. SUP groups
in locations as unlikely as Idaho and New Mexico can
be found on Meetup.com. “No body of water is off limits
for stand up paddling,” says Gavere, citing its biggest
growth trends in the Rocky Mountains, where kayakers and
whitewater rafters are using inflatable boards on rivers and
lakes; the Great Lakes, where people do yoga on boards
on flat water; and Texas, where some folks fish from their
boards or ride small Gulf of Mexico waves.

Boston, that followed 125,000 subjects for 20 to 22 years, confirms
that eating berries can lower the
risk of Parkinson’s disease. The participants who consumed the most
flavonoids, especially the anthocyanins found mostly in berries, had
a much lower risk of developing
the disease than those whose diet
contained less or different classes
of flavonoids.
A natural form of aspirin—salicylic
acid—has been found in berries that
grow on canes, such as blackberries, blueberries and raspberries. The
Oregon State University’s Department of Food Science and Technology
reports that the salicylic acid found in
these caneberries could prove to have
effects similar to aspirin in protecting against heart disease. A 100-gram
serving (about ¾ cup) of red raspberries, for example, contains about 5
milligrams of salicylic acid.

Dr. Joan King leads this fundamental,
interactive seminar to begin finding your
values, strengths, and purpose for your
life. By exploring what we value and
what our personal strengths are, we can
begin formulating our life purpose and
start to envision the woman we want to be.

the path, step over roots and rocks to
solitude. Each foot forward shapes the
journey, and delivers you closer to
yourself, your dreams. With Trailwise
Guides, Inc., explore Vail’s scenic backcountry, deepen your connection with
the natural world, feel the pulse of your
heart, awaken your breath to freshness
and vitality, enliven your soul, and illuminate nature’s role as a resource.

Big Push
by Paul David Bond Pesqueira
Paul Bond’s magic realism art illuminates a dreamlike world where
anything is possible, as he deftly
juxtaposes and rearranges common
elements to convey universal spiritual
or metaphysical ideas. Sometimes,
his paintings are simply uplifting
illusions, expressing the whimsical,
surreal and fantastic side of life. They
are always soothing, visual meditations that delight the imagination and
stir the soul.
Rearranging familiar objects gives
Bond the visual symbols he uses as
a language to reflect an emotion or
thought he’s entertaining at the moment. “Often, a painting is born from
something randomly seen from a car
window or a line in a novel or song,”
he explains. “If it stirs my curiosity, it
finds its way into my work.”
About Big Push, he says, “This was
inspired by a photo I had taken of
my favorite model in a nearby park,
looking down from a swing. I immediately hit on the idea of her swinging
at a ridiculously high altitude—joyful, with unflinching confidence and
courage.”
