The Ashmolean's major development to build on its strengths as
a world-class museum is well underway. Leading architect Rick
Mather has created a design to transform the Ashmolean into a
museum for a 21st century public. The plan involves building 39
new galleries, an education centre, conservation studios, and a
walkthrough between the Museum and the Cast Gallery.
Guided Tours and Talks
Lunchtime Gallery Talks take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
at 1.15pm. Booking is recommended 01865 278015 (mornings only).
Cost £2.00. Highlights of the Ashmolean tour takes place on Saturdays
at 11.00. Cost £2.00. For more information pick up a What’s On
leaflet at the main entrance.
The Ashmolean remains open for business as usual. Visitors to the
Museum can see most of the Western Art galleries, the Print Room
and the Egyptian galleries as well as enjoying the temporary
exhibitions, the shop and the café.
Access
There are ramps into the building, lifts to all floors and a wheelchair.
However some parts of the building have limited access. Free touch
tours are available in the Egyptian and Greek collections for visitors
with visual impairments as well as a free gallery trail for those in a
wheelchair. Where possible, we suggest ringing before visiting to
discuss arrangements 01865 278015.
Gallery Closures during the Redevelopment of the
Museum (2007–2009)
As part of the development, the collections of Antiquities, Eastern
Art and Coins have gone into storage and the galleries which
housed them have now been demolished. Over two hundred
highlights of these collections can be seen on display in the
Treasures exhibition (Gallery 49).
Due to the building work, some of the paintings in the Western
Art galleries and the Greek ceramics in Gallery 1 will be taken
temporarily off display throughout the development to ensure
their protection.
