Whether it be at elementary and secondary schools or colleges and universities, outstanding work is being done by educators at all levels, often resulting in state and national recognition. “We are fortunate to have exceptional educational resources throughout Volusia County,” said Volusia County Schools Superintendent Dr. Margaret Smith, who once served as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Education. “At every level, dedicated educators, administrators and support staff combine proven techniques with creativity and innovation to provide students with a rich educational experience.” Volusia County Schools Volusia’s public school system serves more than 61,000 students, making it the 13th largest school system in Florida. There are 81 schools in the system including 45 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, nine high schools, two combination schools (K-8 and 6-12), four alternative education schools, and nine charter schools. Volusia County schools are staffed with more than 4,500 teachers, all of whom are state certified and 43 percent of whom have a master’s degree or higher. Accredited…and honored The district is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In fact, the Volusia County School District was the first school district in Florida and the third in the nation to receive accreditation from SACS, a distinction that recognizes and celebrates educational excellence in Volusia County. Add to this Florida’s 2010 Superintendent of the Year honors bestowed upon Dr. Smith, and it is clear the district is committed to excellence at every level. Exceptional teachers Many teachers have brought honor to the classroom and the Volusia school district. Among them are Pine Ridge High School teacher Erin Johnson, recognized as 22 Florida’s Outstanding Agricultural Education Teacher; and Cathy Colwell, a Mainland High School teacher who, along with her students, has received a Meritorious Achievement Award from the National Medal of Technology program 10 years in a row. Deltona High School teacher Starr Woods has been honored with a Governor’s Excellence in Education Award, recognizing exceptional AfricanAmerican teachers. Heritage Middle School teacher Lisa Bynum was named Florida’s Agriscience Teacher of the Year, and New Smyrna Beach High School teacher Kathleen Weaver was named Florida’s Outstanding Young Member by the Florida Association of Agricultural Teachers. Students raise the bar Students also have put the Volusia County school system on center stage. The 2010 Dell Scholar Program recognized four Volusia County students. The graduation rate for Volusia County high school seniors exceeds that of the state and the nation. Nearly 1,300 students are enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program or pre-International Baccalaureate program. More than half of high school seniors tested with an average SAT score of 1,475 or higher. Volusia County graduates garnered more than $28 million in scholarships in 2010. Backed by business The business community provides substantial support for Volusia County Schools through its nonprofit FUTURES Foundation. It was established in 1985 to increase business/ community involvement in public schools and to provide programs and activities beyond the financial capabilities of the school district. The FUTURES Foundation provides assistance to all public schools in Volusia County. Members work to encourage and increase business and civic involvement in the school system. They motivate, encourage and fund creative and innovative educational programs, and assist students in preparing for the workforce of tomorrow. FUTURES also plays an instrumental role in providing recognition of outstanding achievements by students, teachers and support staff. The organization assists in the recruitment of the highest quality teachers and administrators and works to raise the level of public understanding and support through improved communication and distribution of information, in addition to its vital partnership with the business community. “Another way business backs Volusia County Schools is the Career Connection Consortium, a partnership with area business and industry, the Center for Business Excellence, and local colleges and universities,” said Brad Giles, president of Giles Electric and chair of the cadre. “We advise and evaluate the career and technical education programs and the many career academies offered through our secondary schools.” Higher education Volusia County is particularly fortunate to have several outstanding colleges and universities. “For a community our size, higher education is exceptionally well represented here with a wide range of private and public colleges and universities,” said Dr. Wendy B. Libby, president of Stetson University. Among them are some familiar names among the nation’s respected colleges and universities. Daytona State College is ranked 37th in the nation among four-year institutions in awarding associate degrees. The college continues to partner with neighboring higher education institutions to support the region’s economic development and workforce training needs. Daytona State’s Advanced Technology College houses its engineering technology, computer science 24 and vocational programs, while its recently acquired News-Journal Center in downtown Daytona Beach is home to the college’s music production and performing arts programs. Other resources include the Mori Hosseini College of Hospitality Management; the acclaimed Southeast Museum of Photography; and the Florida State University Daytona Beach Regional Medical School Campus, a community-based medical school that provides third- and fourth-year clinical training through affiliations with local physicians, ambulatory care facilities and hospitals. Keiser University, Nova Southeastern University, Phoenix University and others add to the alternatives for higher education in Volusia County. Wyotech, Installers Institute, International Academy and others offer training in specific areas such as automotive and motorcycle repair, car stereo installation and cosmetology. And Palmer College of Chiropractic, the first and largest chiropractic college in the world, has a growing campus in Volusia County.
