Crosshall Junior School
Academy Trust
Newsletter – June/July 2013
Dear Children & Parents
In my 27 years at Crosshall School, I have never missed the opportunity at the end of the year to thank
you for your participation in the life of the school, your hard work and your commitment.
As you will know, I have recently had to spend some time in hospital however, am pleased to say that I
am now at home recuperating and well and truly on the mend!
I am very sorry not to have been able to be with you in person as the year ends, but I have most certainly
been there in spirit and am very much looking forward to returning ‘fully charged and raring to go’ in
September.
My particular thanks go to Anne Eardley who has taken on the role of Principal in my absence and
ensured the school has continued with its high standard of operation and service.
I wish all the leavers, the Year 6 children as they progress to their next stage of education and the staff
who are leaving, all the very best for their future.
I hope you enjoy the summer break and look forward to seeing you in September when we return on
Wednesday 4th for another exciting year.
Julia Elliott
Principal
It's at this time of year that we recognise the achievements of our Year Six pupils in the assembly affectionately
referred to as 'Big Honours'.
This year, we are lucky enough to have Lord Constantine, Andrew Hansard the Mayor, County Councillor Mr
David Harty, Mr Martin Blackwell PE Specialist, Mrs Catherine Harty School Governor and Mr Gary Yates exHeadteacher of the Junior School presenting the awards to the children.
Parents have also been invited to watch, take photos and offer cuddles - even if they're not accepted by these most
senior students.
The following day, is the Leavers' Assembly. This year's cohort has been a credit to the school and to their
parents. The year group has contributed extremely positively to the life of the school as you can see from all the
acknowledgements they have received indicated later in this Newsletter,
The staff wish the Year Six children every success in the bright futures and hope that they will return and visit.
Anne Eardley
Vice Principal
At the end of July, Crosshall Junior School says ‘good-bye’ to two long-serving members
of staff, Mrs Tina Finn and Mrs Carol Warren.
Mrs Finn has been a governor for fifteen years, as well as a
parent helper and teaching assistant. Earlier this month, she was
presented with an award to celebrate her success as a Crosshall
Junior School governor at an official ceremony in St Ives.
As a governor, Tina’s oversight of recruitment and child
protection has been invaluable. However, apart from her roles as
TA and governor, perhaps her most significant contribution to the
school has been gifted and talented education. In partnership, Tina has developed a
curriculum that has been hugely innovative, challenging and timely.
Picture:Mr Harty (Councillor), Mrs Finn, Mr Palmer (School Governor)
Mrs Warren has worked as a teaching assistant at Crosshall for nearly 30
years. She has been on several school residential trips and is probably
best remembered for her leadership of Penlan, where she looked after
all the children and adults by boiling morning eggs and preparing evening
vegetables with an array of inadequate staff members.
Carol has worked in every year group and with over 3,000 children, and
has brought an infectious sense of humour to every team. She always
sees the best in everyone and gives her very best to every situation. Carol’s generosity is
boundless and has already promised that she’ll be back to help with Macmillan Coffee Morning
in September!
Both teaching assistants have worked tirelessly to support the children, staff and
community, and will be greatly missed.
Welcome to our new Site Manager Mr Andy Bruce and our new
member of the office team Mrs Arty Speroni.
The children will be introduced in September.
AR BookFinder (http://www.arbookfind.co.uk) is an excellent resource for supporting your
child's reading development, particularly during the school holidays. It is an online tool that
allows you to search the Accelerated Reader database for books with quizzes.
You can:
locate books by title, author, AR book level or topic;
check whether the content and interest level are suitable for your child;
find out the AR level of a book;
create a booklist to take to the library.
The children can take a quiz on any book at their AR level, not just ones they bring home
from school, so this is a fantastic way to find books at the correct level among those at home
or at the local library.
The Parent Guide on the school website contains more information and step-by-step
instructions on how to use the site.
Did you know that many books can be used to 'AR Quiz'? If your child reads one of their own
books or a book from a public library they can use AR Book Find to check its level. The
website can be found here: http://www.arbookfind.co.uk Simply enter the book's title and
the website will inform you if the book has a quiz and if so what level it is at. This could be
used for a child to continue getting books at his/her level outside of school or to take some
extra quizzes.
We now have over 500 followers on our Twitter account. It is a good way to keep up with
some of the latest news from the school. If you use the site, add us to your list of followers. If
you don't use the site you can see the posts here: http://twitter.com/crosshalljunior
Playing Out is a not-for-profit information and advice resource for street play. They aim to
increase children’s safe access to informal play in residential streets through: directly
supporting resident-led street play sessions; running workshops for parents and residents;
coordinating a network of 'street organisers';providing free resources and advice;training
play/community professionals; communicating the benefits of street play; working with
policy-makers to enable street play. More information here: http://playingout.net
Sports Day 2013
On Thursday 11th July the school enjoyed a fantastic day of sporting fun
with the annual Crosshall Junior School Sports Day.
During the morning, all children took part in a round-robin challenge of
twenty physical activities earning points for their houses. The afternoon
individual events (Sprints, 600m, Howler Throw and Standing Long Jump)
saw some brilliant performances and very close finishes – well done to all
competitors! The Chris Frost Sports Day Trophy was presented to the team captains of the
winning house at the end of the amazing day. Well done to everyone for making it such a
fantastic day!
A huge thank you is due to all the parents, family and friends who came along and supported
during the day – it was great to have such an enthusiastic and supportive crowd throughout –
thank you!

Donations for Jimmy’s Night Shelter
Children, staff and parents coming into one Monday whole
school assembly were astonished to see an enormous pile
of groceries and toiletries heaped up on the hall floor.
These were the 1016 items collected by the whole school
community to donate to Jimmy’s Night Shelter in
Cambridge. Sara, Ros and Barry from the shelter attended
our assembly to thank everyone for their generosity and to
explain the work of the shelter in helping homeless
people.
The idea for the collection came from Amy Lovell in Year
Six who was touched by the plight of homeless people in the cold, snowy conditions in
January of this year. She and the other children from the Able, Gifted and Talented group
studying PSHCE, led the collection by making posters and newsletters and counting the
donations. The photograph shows Dean Richardson from Year Five and Amy Thomas from Year
Six with staff from Jimmy’s Night Shelter.
We have had a lovely letter of thanks from Jimmy’s after their visit. Well done to everyone
involved and thank you for making a difference to the lives of other people.
Quote from local newspaper
School children in St Neots have gathered an impressive donation for a Cambridge homeless
charity. Jimmy’s Night Shelter received around 1000 items of food and toiletries from
Crosshall Junior School in a presentation last Monday, April 29, more than twice the children’s
original target. Their concern for homeless people was sparked by the gifted and talented
group’s discussion of the plight of the destitute, particularly in the cold weather this spring.
They decided to inspire the whole school to collect necessities for the shelter, which, as they
said, wasn’t easy. “The hardest thing about doing this was trying to get other people
involved,” said Dean, one of the pupils leading the collection. The shelter’s representative
Jane is very pleased that ties between Jimmy’s and Crosshall have remained strong over
several years. She said “We’re not right on their doorstep, so for them to think of us is really
wonderful.” For more information on Jimmy’s Night Shelter, please go to:

Shakespeare News: During the spring term, the Department for Education learned about our
Shakespeare productions. As a result, they have been publishing our work through its social
media outlets by sharing information from our own school website. Some details of which can
be found below:
http://www.crosshalljunior.co.uk/Shakespeare-and-the-DfE
Come App With Me On Wednesday 12th June we held our very first event, which was
attended by about ten families. We discussed apps that can be used by children of Key Stage
Two age. Information from the event can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/CJSComeApp
Everyone who was at our Summer Fayre was amazed by the Spitfire
display above the school's playground.
The Hunts Post kindly provided us with one of the photographs they took
on the day:
Thank you to everyone who attended the Summer Fayre.
News from Year Three
The Year Three trip to Burwell offered children numerous opportunities
to explore the outdoor environment, stay away from home and work in
teams. The children produced some superb artwork using only items
form nature and had fun designing ways to prevent an egg from
cracking when dropped from a great height. The children have fond
memories of the trip. It was lovely to see so many parents join us to
view the photos which captured the fun that was had by all.
The Year Three teachers would like to thank all parents for their support and kind comments
throughout the year (and even the tin of biscuits!), they are very much appreciated. We have
all thoroughly enjoyed teaching the current cohort of children and know that they will
continue to flourish in future years at Crosshall.
Have you heard about the Year Three Toy Making Factory? Over the past two
weeks, children have been designing and making pneumatic toys. These toys all
use either a balloon or syringes to move a part. Some lovely examples include a
bunny rabbit popping out of a top hat, a lizard catching a fly with its tongue, a
clown with a nose that moves and a mouse scuttling out of a hole.
News from Year Four
Rock UK At the beginning of June Year, Four spent three fun filled
days at Rock UK. There were many challenges for the children to take
part in, including high ropes, climbing walls, canoeing and fencing.
The children worked really well together to ‘Walk the Plank’ and
enjoyed singing round the campfire.
As a Year Four team we were very proud of all of their achievements
and from the comments that we have had from the children we know
that they had a great time challenging themselves to attempt tasks
that at first glance seemed quite daunting.
“I had a great time. The canoeing was fun and I learnt how to get right to the top of the
climbing wall’.
‘The instructors really encouraged us all to do our best’.
I didn’t think that I would get to the top of the ‘Leap of Faith’ but I was really pleased when I
did it all by myself.’
News from Year Five
Visit to Huntingdon On Thursday 4th July, Year Five visited Huntingdon as part of their
history work. In the summer term, we have been learning about the English Civil War, The
Stuarts and Oliver Cromwell. In particular we have looked at how our local area is linked to
these events of the Stuart era. Whilst in Huntingdon we had three activities. We walked
around the town, looking at various locations with links to Cromwell, we visited the library,
where we learned about heraldry and event went into the Strong Room. For some, the most
interesting part of the day was visiting the Cromwell Museum and learning that it was once his
school. Whilst in the museum, we saw lots of historical artefacts and discovered about how
Cromwell's actions changed the course of history.
Year Five Mathematics Challenge
Congratulations to William Davison, Kobe Grant, Gabriel Pang and Kenyeh Soyei for winning
their heat and progressing to the final. On Thursday, 23rd May, the four children, who had
been selected by their maths teachers, went to St. Mary's School in St. Neots to compete
against nine other schools. They worked as a team to solve problems and answer questions in
four different rounds. All of them worked extremely well together and were delighted to be
announced as the winning team at the end of the evening. Very well done to all of them.
The children said, “The maths competition was very tense, especially the memory round. We
flew through the first and last rounds. There were bonus questions after each round and they
put a lot of pressure on us because all of the other schools around us were trying to work the
same thing out. At one point one of us had the answer to a bonus question but another school
beat us to it. We are looking forward o the finals because we are determined to win!”
On Thursday, 4th July, Kobe Grant, Gabriel Pang, Kenyeh Soyei and Ashlee Woodward then
took part in the final at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. The competition took place inside
the main 'Airspace' hangar and they even answered some questions whilst sitting underneath
Concorde!
The four children worked as a team to solve a range of maths problems in three different
activity areas, competing against the heat winners from twenty-eight other schools.
Although they did not win, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and a fantastic achievement
to get this far in the competition. They should each be very proud of themselves.
A big thank you to all of the parents who transported the children to Duxford and supported
them during the evening.
Primary Schools Science Challenge Earlier this term, six children from Year Five visited
Ernulf Academy to take part in this challenge. The children performed very well, answering
questions and partaking in some practical activities. Although they did not win, the children
enjoyed the experience and came away with a certificate each. Well done to all.
Some of our Year Five children have been invited to apply for places
in the 'Masterclasses' in maths, history and English run by Kimbolton
school each year. Although not all our applications were successful,
Gabriel, Kobe, Amber, Liam and Ashlee have all been successful this year in gaining a place
on a masterclass. Some of them have even been twice!
Year Five Film Festival Success! A clip from our production of Romeo and Juliet was entered
into the Cambridgeshire Young People's Film Festival. On 11th July, it won third place in the
Year Five category. The film can be seen on the Year Five page of the school's website. On
the evening, we were unable to attend and extend our thanks to the Crosshall Infant school
children who collected our award on our behalf.
ICT Resources Open Morning On Tuesday 9th July, Year Five opened their doors to fifteen
parents and their children to use our ICT resources. At the event children showed their
parents how to use iPod and iPad devices, created photographic Pop Art, made animations
and developed computer games using Scratch.
Here's what some of the children thought:
Aaron: "I loved using the iPad because I found some things to put on my own iPad."
Ailish: "My mum enjoyed making some Pop Art. We printed it and it has pride of place on our
fridge!"
Jessica: "My mum especially enjoyed photographing her hand for Pop Art."
Eliza: "My dad enjoyed making games in Scratch."
Year Five were please to see so many happy adults and children at the event.
News from Year Six
Year Six Residential Recently, Year Six visited Boreatton Park in
Shropshire for their residential trip. The children were amazing, taking
part in a range of exciting activities. We were very lucky with the
weather, with only a few showers during one of our water-based
activities.
As part of the trip, the group took part in activities such as abseiling, zip
wiring and archery. Most of the children agreed that their favourite activity was working
together on creating a flotilla of rafts with varying degrees of success: leading to splashing
and swimming!
In the evening, the children joined in sing-alongs with the fantastic PGL staff before retiring
to their tents so that they are rested for another action packed day.
It was a brilliant week with the children setting themselves hard challenges and succeeding.
The PGL staff were impressed with the positive attitude and good behaviour of the children.
Well done everyone!
Key Stage Two Tests During May, Year Six sat the end of Key Stage Two Assessments. It was a
hard week but the children were wonderful. They tried hard in every test and supported each
other throughout. The staff worked hard on ensuring the disruption to children was minimal
but were exceedingly pleased with the positive approach all the children brought to the
week.
Year Six Teacher Assessment In June, the school was inspected by a group of moderators
from the County’s English team. They were in school to investigate the judgements given at
the end of Year Six. They looked at many of the children’s written work and were very
impressed. When they left, they commented on the range and quality of the types of writing
they were presented with, as well as the consistent marking and progress the children had
made. Crosshall Junior passed with ‘flying colours’ and was given no areas for development.
Congratulations Mr Ainscow and the team!
Once again, this year, we have enjoyed the Christian focus of our regular Thursday
assemblies led by a committed and inspiring team of church leaders. Our sincere
thanks go to Elaine Donaldson (St Neots United Reform Church), Kieran Crow and
Jenny Vass (ACTIOS), Tim Robb and Mark Newman(St Mary's Eaton Socon), Rev Tricia Williams
and Simon Cooper (St Neots Methodist Church) and Mike Kendall (St Neots Evangelical
Church).
Rainbow Makeover
During half- term, the Rainbow Garden underwent a makeover. We were lucky to have
volunteers from the community who re-laid paving slaps, pruned trees, fixed the roof of the
shed and raised one of the flower beds. The makeover has now made it more accessible for
any wheelchair users. Our volunteers also planted shrubs around the fence and built a natural
habitat for insects which has generated a lot of interest from the pupils.
Gardening Club Competition At the beginning of the term Gardening Club held a
competition. The members had to make a sculpture from natural objects. The entries were
astounding with birds, hedgehogs, an owl, a crocodile and many more. The winner was
Danielle Jawad with an owl.

School Dinners
School dinners are very popular for many Crosshall pupils. So, in response to
the recent media speculation questioning the nutritional value of children’s
school dinners and packed lunches, we thought we’d find out how popular
our school dinners were!
87% of pupils currently eat a school dinner each day. Matti, Luke and Jude in
Year Three described the dinners as ‘lovely’, ‘yummy’, ‘delicious’ and
‘awesome’ with their favourite foods being fish, pizza and tuna pasta salad.
Children are given a wide selection of healthy main courses and desserts, all of which are
freshly prepared by our kitchen staff each day, using food sourced from local suppliers.
Children can then choose whether to add vegetables to their dinner or to
visit the salad bar. For dessert, children have the option of fruit, yoghurt
or a cake, all of which are homemade with a low sugar and fat content.
Friday is the day when fish and chips are served and when children who
bring their own packed lunch may bring crisps to eat.
Guidance on what to include in a packed lunch and suitable break time
snacks can be found on the school website:
