What does our church believe about God? The Bible?
Salvation? Church? Worship? What is our mission?
Do we have a vision that sustains us in the present and
can guide us for the future? The elders have wrestled
with these issues over the last year, and we think that
we’ve come up with some answers! As a result, over the
next few months, you’ll be hearing all about our process,
purpose, and conclusions! The sermon series starts on July 8th.
Last month I shared just a little bit of our process in the newsletter, and as a part of
that discussion I mentioned what I hope will become our vision statement. Here is the full

NEWS FROM THE UKRAINE SISTER CHURCH
SIMPLIFYING LIFE
In 2004 Pastor Jim came to me and asked if I would
go to the Ukraine with him to help at a bible camp
and search for a Sister Church. I wasn't even sure
where Ukraine was. I knew I had seen it on the
“Risk” game board that we use to play. Anyway in a
weak moment I said yes I would go. It was a life
changing experience. After flying for 16 hours we
arrived in Kiev Ukraine and were met by the head
of the Baptist Union of the Sumy district. We then
drove 5 hours to Sumy, where we spent the night .
The next morning we drove about 1 hour to Lebidine, where we helped with the Bible camp for
the next 5 days. We stayed with Pastor Nicoley of
the Lebidine Baptist Church. After that we visited 6
churches and met with each Pastor. After spending
much time in prayer Pastor Jim and I decided to
recommend Krasnopolye as a Sister Church. Krasnopolye was a small church led by Pastor Sergey
and his wife Lena. We were able to bring Pastor
Sergey and Lena here to meet our congregation.
Since that time we have had the opportunity to
help the church financially as well as help with
women's bible study’s and summer Bible camp for
the children of Krasnopolye. Some of the projects
we have helped with include: a new furnace, painting, chairs, curtains, and last year a sound system.
We have also funded the Bible camp each year.

In the light of - becoming 85 in three months
a light stroke three years ago,
and
being diagnosed with mild
cognitive impairment
it is time for me to cut back.
Beginning July 1, I will continue attending
Thursday prayer meetings, distributing bulletins to FBC folk at Scandia Village and accepting Sunday and funeral preaching assignments.
I will miss calling people on their birthdays
and anniversaries, hospital visits and leading
the SO50 group.
More emphases will be placed on reading,
praying, writing, downsizing my library, meeting tourists, and attending community and
youth events.
Thank you for memories and friendship in the
past 22 years in Door County and in the past
few years the “miles and meals” in part time
employment.
A lot has happened over the last 8 years. This last
May the Baptist Union decided to bring a new Pastor to the Krasnopolye church. Aleksey Myroshnychenko from the Grace Baptist church of Sumy was
selected as Pastor. Pastor Aleksey and his wife
Tanya have two sons, 20 and 22 year old. I have
talked with Aleksey several time via Skype, and look
forward to meeting him. Our Ukraine team is sending Bogdan and myself to Ukraine this summer to
help with the Bible camp and talk with Pastor Aleksey. We leave July 12 and return July 22.
Please pray for safe travel and a productive camp,
that many children will come to know Christ.

NOTES FROM THE JUNE
ELDERS MEETING
The meeting was opened with prayer.
The agenda was approved with additional
items. The notes from May were approved.
The financial report for May 2012 was reviewed.
The compassion team reported having a
great meeting and that the members worked
well together.
The kitchen team reported that they discussed the present and future use of the kitchen
and came up with a list of their remodeling
needs.
 Gary Lundquist presented ideas that have
been discussed by the Ukraine sister church
team. He and Bogdan will travel to Krasnapolia
from July 12-23, 2012 to coincide with their
summer vacation Bible camp.
 The trustees reported that they will begin
trenching for outdoor electricity including lights
at the middle entrance, and that they will be
working on landscaping over the next month.
The new thermostat system has been ordered, as
have additional blinds for several rooms in the
building.
 Dave Detert announced that the Lion’s
Club has been given the use of another barn for
the repair and storage of bicycles for
BRIDGES.
 The request to send our old choir robes to
a church in Florida was approved.
 Discussed the fall fund raiser and made
preliminary list of needs.
The meeting was closed in prayer.

Friendship with International Students

When we returned to First Baptist Church I was asked to serve on our Missions Committee. After
agreeing, I wondered about my choice as many years before the GMG club had been challenged to
write personal letters to the missionaries our church supported. Even though many of my friends heard
back from the missionaries, I never received a response. Having labored diligently, and making a special trip to the post office to secure appropriate postage for Japan, I was disappointed. Some of those
childhood memories run deep and that is why I want to share the following stories.
About two years ago, Jim and I visited a church in Flagstaff, Arizona. Their pastor had just returned
from a trip to Haiti helping distribute food, supplies, and hope following the earthquake. I was moved
by their quick response and wondered why we couldn’t be more pro-active.
I petitioned the Missions Committee for some line item money in 2011 budget for response to humanitarian relief and development needs. A small amount was designated, and the the first year three dispersions were made with one of them offering a one-time gift to project Hope which was the outreach
connected to the church in Flagstaff.
We realized, as we made these decisions, how important it was to connect this money directly to an
individual or organization we could trust. We have since given one-time gifts to Gil Zinke to be used
in Japan for relief following the tsunami; to the DeCleene’s for repair to the pastor’s home in the Philippines following hurricane damage; to “His Wheel’s”, (an international organization developing prototypes and means to build special bicycles to be used by pastors in five continents who have lost limbs
from land mines, etc.; and, support for Christian education in Chad, and Talibe ministries in Senegal.
Talibe ministries was developed by Todd and Jane Hampton, friends of Murray and Kathy Sitte in
Dakar, Senegal. The target is young boys living with a teacher of the Koran for whom they are sent to
the streets to beg for the teacher’s support. As funds are available, the Hampton’s provide food, clothing, showers, and medical treatment all in the name of Jesus. Instead of a disappointing childhood
memory, these boys will have memories of Christians reaching out to them with the love of Jesus. We
allocated $500 toward a vaccination day which costs approximately $1000, but because of that intervention almost 200 boys can be vaccinated.
Another special need is being addressed by this fund in 2012. Olena, who worked for Connie and Jim
Grotenhuis, and lived with the Nienow’s, is hoping to work with Brenda Moser at Zaporozhye Bible
College this fall. She has professed faith in Christ, and Brenda is excited about the opportunity Olena
will have to meet other Ukrainian Christians, and to spend time with Olena mentoring her. We are
sending $250 to help Olena with the cost of her transportation and living expenses for this activity.
With all of the money the mission board appropriates, I believe this “giving of a cup of water” really
touches the heart of God. Thank you for entrusting us to make wise and godly decisions to use your
money for His Kingdom purposes outside of Door County and in the wider world.

Have you ever tried to read the Bible in a foreign language? Even if you have studied a language for several years, it is not an easy task to understand the Bible when written in something other than your
heart language, or your native language. Some words in the Bible are not even translated in English dictionaries. So BRIDGES makes the Bible available to the international students in their language of origin.
At the first few BRIDGES events small gospel portions of scripture are offered, usually in English, although we have had a few Gospels of John and Romans available in Romanian and Croatian in the past.
Angela Foster, the literature coordinator for BRIDGES, watches carefully as the students fill out their
name tags and indicate what country they come from. As they leave the registration table, Angela offers
them a Bible in their own language. The response of the students helps to identify those who are genuinely interested. Some take the offered literature with great appreciation, even wonder, sometimes
with tears in their eyes, and they come back for another copy. Others politely decline the opportunity.
Bibles are provided in 26 different languages, in bilingual format whenever available. Jesus film DVD’s
are offered to the students, in various languages and different formats usable in other countries, so inventory is tracked on more than 20 different items.
One of the best resources we offer to the students is a booklet entitled Ultimate Questions, which deals
with basic life questions, and asks things such as;
Is God speaking?
What Went Wrong?
Is There an Answer?
What is God like?
Is sin serious?
Why the Cross?
Who am I?
Can Religion Help?
How can I be saved?
These thought-provoking questions encourage the students to think about spiritual values and often
lead them to come to I-GIG (International Group Investigating God) after ESL classes are completed. This
booklet is purchased in 28 languages.
Why is it important to give the students scriptural material in their native language? The reason is because is it most easily understood that way. A translator to the Tagalog dialect in the Philippines put it
this way: “To speak of John the Baptist as wearing leather clothing means in the Tagalog language that
he would be very rich.” So it’s very important to translate scripture so that the meaning is clear and correct in the cultural understanding.
About 20% of the BRIDGES budget goes to purchase literature which is distributed free of charge at
every BRIDGES event to anyone who wants it.
