Saint Thomas Aquinas High School president, Dr. Bill
Ford, accepted the National Blue Ribbon School award
from Aba Kumi, Director of the NBRS program for the
Department of Education, on November 13, 2012, in
Washington, D.C. Accompanying Dr. Ford to accept the
award were faculty members Brian Schenck and Craig
Moss, who spearheaded the five-year assessment and
application process.

Saint Thomas Aquinas High School
Receives National Blue Ribbon
School Designation
On September 7, the United
States Secretary of Education, Arne
Duncan, officially announced that
Saint Thomas Aquinas High School is
a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School
based on overall academic excellence.
progress in improving
student achievement
levels as measured by
state assessments or
nationally-normed
tests.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools
award honors public and private
elementary, middle, and high
schools where students perform at
very high levels or where significant
improvements are being made in
students’ levels of achievement. Saint
Thomas Aquinas is one of 50 private
schools in the country to receive the
designation, along with 219 public
schools from across the country.
When he was
notified of the award,
Dr. William Ford, President of Saint
Thomas Aquinas High School,
congratulated and thanked the faculty
and staff of Saint Thomas Aquinas
High School. “This nomination is
validation of our school’s quality
academic programs and the conscious
result of our school-wide effort to
ensure that every student at Saint
Thomas Aquinas has the opportunity
to learn and acquire tools for life-long
achievement,” he said.
“Our nation has no greater
responsibility than helping all children
realize their full potential,” Duncan
said. “Schools honored with the
National Blue Ribbon Schools Award
are committed to accelerating student
achievement and preparing students
for success in college and careers.
Their work reflects the conviction
that every child has promise and that
education is the surest pathway to a
strong, secure future.”
The program recognizes schools in
one of two performance categories.
The first category, for which Saint
Thomas Aquinas has been honored,
is “Exemplary High Performing.”
Schools in this category are
recognized among their state’s highest
performing schools, as measured
by state assessments or nationallynormed tests. The second category
is “Exemplary Improving,” in which
schools that have at least 40 percent
of their students from disadvantaged
backgrounds demonstrate the most
“It is especially fitting that this
designation comes as we celebrate
our 25th year as a premier Catholic
high school in the Kansas City greater
metropolitan area,” said Ford. Since
1988, Saint Thomas Aquinas High
School has graduated 5,889 young
men and women. Current enrollment
at the four-year co-educational
archdiocesan high school is 937
students.
To select National Blue Ribbon
Schools, the Department of Education
requests nominations from the top
education official in every state,
the District of Columbia, Puerto
Rico, the Department of Defense
Education Activity, and the Bureau
of Indian Education. The Council
for American Private Education
(CAPE) also nominates 50 private
and parochial schools for the award
from the 33,740 private elementary,
middle and secondary schools that the
organization represents (more than
80% of the private school enrollment
nationwide).
To qualify for the NBRS
designation, a school must meet
certain academic criteria over
a five-year period including the
federal Adequate Yearly Progress
(AYP) measurement and the state’s
Academic Performance Index (API). A
total of 417 schools nationwide may be
nominated for the NBRS distinction
per year. In its 30-year history, the
National Blue Ribbon Schools
Program has bestowed this coveted
award on nearly 7,000 of America’s
schools.
Locally, Saint Thomas Aquinas
was awarded the Kansas Department
of Education’s 2012 Governor’s
Achievement Award, which recognizes
schools that score in the top 5% of all
high schools in both math and reading
on the Kansas State Assessment tests.
It is the only high school in Johnson
County to receive the recognition
this year. Since the state-assessment
program was established seven
years ago in 2006, Saint Thomas
Aquinas has received the Governor’s
Achievement Award designation five
times: 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011
and 2012.

HALl of Fame
2013 Saints Hall of Fame Recipients
Named
Saint Thomas Aquinas High
School is pleased to announce the
establishment of the Saints Hall of
Fame Awards Program to formally
recognize alumni, parents and friends
who help define and advance the
institution and its mission.
The Saints Hall of Fame program
celebrates the four-year co-educational
high school’s 25th year and its alumni
and supporters. To date, 5,889 alumni
have graduated from Saint Thomas
Aquinas since the school opened at
114th & Pflumm in 1988.
Nominations for the annual award
are based on exceptional achievement
in areas of profession, vocation or
avocation that may include but are
not limited to fields of religion, arts,
athletics, business, human services,
industry, medicine, military, science
or volunteerism. Award categories
are Alumni and Distinguished Service.
Additional awards that may be
bestowed in any given year include the
Legacy Award, for long-time exceptional
service to the institution by members
of the community, and the Marian
Award, for long-time exceptional
service by retired faculty and staff. All
nominees must demonstrate Catholic
values that represent Saint Thomas
Aquinas High School and its mission
within the Archdiocese of Kansas City
in Kansas.
Honorees are chosen by an
appointed Hall of Fame Selection
Committee consisting of diverse
representation of the Saint Thomas
Aquinas community. Recipients will
be honored in the Saint Thomas
Aquinas High School Saints Spirit
Annual Report and at the 2013 Hall
of Fame Induction Tribute. The
inaugural event will be held on
Saturday evening, March 2, 2013,
at the Regnier Center at Johnson
County Community College in
conjunction with the Saints 25th
Year Gala celebration.
Alumni Award
The 2013 inaugural Saints Hall of Fame Alumni Award recipients are: Father Vince Huber, class of 2000;
Erica Thesing Kratofil, class of 1997; Mikey Needleman, class of 2002; Benjamin Schloegel, class of 1996; and
Brigid Molen Sullivan, class of 1995. Alumni Award nominees must be graduates of ten years or more.
Benjamin Schloegel, ‘96, is a triathlete, firefighter and entrepreneur who embraces
service to others. As a triathlete he has won numerous competitions at many levels and
has raced in over 20 Ironman triathlons, frequently finishing in the Top-Ten. Although
he never swam, biked or ran competitively while growing up, Schloegel ascended to
the professional level of triathlon in just two years after struggling tremendously with
alcohol and drug abuse as well as discipline issues and the court/legal system. His
behavior resulted in his removal from Saint Thomas Aquinas for a year, but he remained
in contact with some key people at the school who he credits with bringing him back
from the fringe and carrying him when he was not strong or disciplined enough to do
it himself. Through his company Endurance Management Group llc which owns and
operates EnduraCamps and FireFighterAthlete.com, Ben now coaches others to become
better athletes and firefighters as well as better parents/spouses/co-workers/children
by encouraging life-balance and sustainable fitness. Ben, who is known to friends and
colleagues as a highly motivating, inspirational and driven individual, also risks his own
life every day as a full-time firefighter and EMT for the city of Kansas City, Missouri on
Truck 8. For Ben, being a firefighter is the culmination of turning around his life to
ultimately and selflessly serve others. Schloegel serves on the Board of Directors for First Benjamin Scholegel, ‘96
Call (an affiliate of the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence), mentors
for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kansas City, and counsels adolescents: sometimes through the Student Formation office
at STA. One of his companies’ core values is to give a substantial portion of its earnings as well as time back to support
physical activity among youth. Retired from multisport, Ben enjoys consulting, boxing, extreme sports and his dog
Sammy. Two of Ben’s siblings, Charlie Schloegel and Ali Schloegel Dunn, ‘98, attended STA along with numerous
cousins. His parents are Debby and Jake Schloegel, members of Church of the Nativity.

team of Air Weapons officers
Brigid Molen Sullivan, ‘95
during planning, preparation
and execution of airborne missions for Operation Enduring
Freedom. As a Marine Corps software analyst in 2003-04,
Brigid provided technical support to deployed U.S. Marine
Corps Intelligence Forces. Upon completion of her active
military duty, Brigid earned her Doctor of Medicine degree
and was recognized with the Family Medicine Research
Award in 2011 from the Medical University of South
Carolina. Now a hospitalist at Trident and Summerville
Hospitals, Dr. Sullivan and her husband Roger volunteer at
a local free clinic as well as participate in medical missions
to Guatemala with their local diocese. The Sullivans
reside in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina with their three
young children, where Brigid enjoys running, cooking
and gardening. Brigid’s parents are Susan and Joe Molen
of Holy Spirit parish. Siblings who also attended Saint
Thomas Aquinas are Ryan Molen, ‘90, Sean Molen, ‘92,
and Lily Molen Beach, ‘97.
Father Vince Huber, ‘00, was ordained into the Holy
Order of Priests on June 18, 2011. He is the first and
only graduate of Saint Thomas Aquinas High School
to be ordained a priest at the present time. During his
undergraduate work at the University of Kansas, Vince
Huber was an active member of the St. Lawrence Catholic
Campus Center. Through encouragement from friends,
family and the intercession of the Holy Spirit, Vince moved
to Rome in 2004 and committed to his vows of poverty,
chastity and obedience on January 1, 2008. At the
historic Ordination Mass at Holy Spirit Catholic
Church in Overland Park, Father Vince became
one of the first four priests of the Apostles of the
Interior Life, an emerging order founded in Rome in
2007 by Father Salvatore Scorza. Father Vince and
the other priests and nuns in his Order split their
ministry time between Rome and the Archdiocese
of Kansas City in Kansas. Father Vince is the son of
Debbie and Randy Huber of Church of the Nativity
parish. His three sisters are also Saint Thomas
Aquinas High School alumni: Jessie Huber, ‘02,
Tricia Huber Sprouse ‘03, and Lindsey Huber, ‘05.
Erica Thesing Kratofil, ‘97, leads an altruistic life
guided by faith, compassion and respect for life. She
graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2001
with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies with a
concentration in Journalism, Ethics and Democracy.
Following this, she
went to work with the
AmeriCorps VISTA
program that provided
social services to
homeless clients seeking
legal assistance. This
led her to seek a Master
of Social Work from
Washington University
in St. Louis where she
was the recipient of a
prestigious Women in
Management Scholarship.
Erica Thesing Kratofil, ‘97
At the age of 26, she
accepted the challenge of helping launch a non-profit
organization that provides shelter and social services
for homeless families -- the Johnson County Interfaith
Hospitality Network. In her role as Network Manager,
she coordinated all facets of the program and trained
more than 850 volunteers. Erica’s first-hand knowledge
of issues related to poverty and homelessness have
grown along with her passion to help children and
families in need. She subsequently worked for Episcopal
Community Services in Kansas City as Director of
Development, where she managed grants and the agency
implemented a culinary arts career training program for
low-income adults and expanded its feeding programs
to serve more than one million meals a year for the
working poor and homeless. Erica and her husband,
John Kratofil, ‘97, have four children and are active
members of Church of the Ascension in Overland
Park. She currently manages grants and social media
for the archdiocesan Catholic Education Foundation,
and also serves as a Field Instructor for the Schools of
Social Welfare at the University
of Kansas and the University of
Missouri - Kansas City. Erica is
the daughter of Cindy and John
Thesing of Church of the Nativity
parish. She has four sisters: Kelly
Thesing Rose, ‘00, Laura Thesing
Fisher, ‘03, Kathryn Thesing,
‘07, and Mary Thesing, ‘10, and
a brother, John Thesing, current
junior at Saint Thomas Aquinas
High School.

Hall of Fame
The gift of music that he shares makes Mikey Needleman, ‘02, a worthy member of
the 2013 Hall of Fame. Beginning his transformation in high school, Mikey was an active
participant in Spring Break Mission Trips, Kairos retreats and sharing his testimony with
other grade school and high school students through Clean Team Outreach. As lead singer
and creator of the Mikey Needleman Band, Mikey has released two records of original
music and plays over 100 shows a year at local and regional venues. His work as a youth and
music minister exemplifies his effect on the spiritual growth of individuals and communities
within the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. As Youth Minister at Holy Spirit parish,
music teacher at Nativity parish, Adult Team Leader for Kairos and Teens Encounter Christ
(TEC) retreats, music leader for countless retreats, reconciliation and adoration services at
Saint Thomas Aquinas High School and at many local parishes, Mikey has had direct and
positive impact on countless youth in the Archdiocese. In addition, Mikey has shared his

gift of Christian music across the country and internationally, playing at Prairie Star Ranch,
National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC), Stuebenville Retreats, Camp Tekakwitha, World Youth Day, youth
rallies, Life Teen camps, Shine Work camps, and Catholic Mission Trips Inc. In January 2008, Mikey initiated the 6:30
p.m. Sunday-evening Life Teen Mass at Holy Spirit parish, offering the community a dynamic, upbeat style of worship.
Mikey still leads music at this Mass every Sunday. Living in Olathe with his wife Allison (Day) Needleman, Mikey enjoys
traveling, his family and his friends. Mikey’s parents are Tati and Mike Needleman of Holy Spirit parish. His sisters are
Celia Needleman Thompson, ‘98, and Kelliana Needleman, ‘05.
Distinguished Service Award
The 2013 inaugural Saints Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Award recipients are: Malcom Ayer, Robert and Gail
Foote, Robert Frankovic, Dave Goebel, and John & Barb O’Donnell.
Representing the
grassroots effort of
dedicated parents that was
so necessary to the school’s
success during its early years,
Mac Ayer is the epitome
of selfless commitment
to Saint Thomas Aquinas
High School. Beginning in
1990 and for most of the
decade, Mac served as a
volunteer coach, fundraiser,
contractor, facilities
Malcolm “Mac” Ayer
manager and genuine
ambassador for the Saints Softball program. Known for
“filling in the gaps,” Mac found a way, when the budget
would not allow, to provide transportation, equipment,
uniforms and lodging not only for the Lady Saints but also
for the school’s “Early Bird Invitational” visiting teams.
Mac Ayer is largely responsible for the construction of
the softball field, batting cages and many improvements
including fencing, backstops, and a field drainage system
at the Saints softball facilities on campus. Married to
JoAnne Lascuola Ayer, the Ayers have two daughters,
Rhonda Ayer Edwards and Angie Ayer Garrison, ‘93, and
five grandchildren. The family owns and manages MAJ-R
Thrift Stores in the Kansas City area.

Continuing their
commitment to Saint
Thomas Aquinas High
School well after their own
children graduated, Bob and
Gail Foote encourage young
families to consider Saint
Thomas Aquinas for their
children’s secondary Catholic
education. They have
established a scholarship, in
memory of their daughter
Colleen, made available to
eighth graders from Queen of
the Holy Rosary-Wea. Strong Robert “Bob” and Gail Foote
supporters of the Chapel and Stadium/Field renovations,
the Footes’ humble generosity has had a significant impact
on the education of hundreds of students who attend
Saint Thomas Aquinas each year. The Footes are members
of St. Michael the Archangel parish and live in Bucyrus,
Kansas, where they manage the Foote Cattle Company.
Bob and Gail await the arrival of their seventh and eighth
grandchildren in April. Their children are Scott Foote, ‘94,
Brad Foote, ‘95, Colleen Foote, ‘98 (dec.), and
Greg Foote, ‘05.
Hall of Fame
Robert “Bob” Frankovic
In 1985, under the direction of Archbishop Ignatius Strecker, Blake Mulvany
recruited Bob Frankovic to help lay the groundwork for a new Catholic high
school in southern Johnson County as well as secure financial support from
his home parish of Holy Spirit for Catholic secondary education across the
Archdiocese. Bob became active in fundraising specifically for Saint Thomas
Aquinas while his children were in high school, serving on the Foundation
Board and eventually as chair of the committee. Bob became an appointed
member to the high school’s governing body -- the Order of Saint Thomas
-- in 1998 . When the Order and Foundation Board merged in 2002, Bob
continued to be actively involved in strengthening the mission of Saint Thomas
Aquinas through the newly formed Board of Trustees until his retirement from
this volunteer position in 2012. A scoutmaster, youth coach and Knights of
Columbus member over the years, Bob is a principal with Cretcher Heartland,
a commercial insurance firm based in Overland Park. Wife, Judy, is a member
of the STA visual art faculty. Their children, all Saints alumni, are Christine
Frankovic Zaroor, ‘93, Michael Frankovic, ‘96, and Lia Frankovic Cless, ‘04.
The Frankovics have one grandchild, Josephine Zaroor.
For thirteen years, Dave Goebel served as Chair of the Saint Thomas Aquinas
High School Board of Trustees. He and his wife Jan have six children, all of whom
are Saints graduates: Lydia Goebel Bledsoe, ‘96, Lauren Goebel Salmon, ‘99, Lyssa
Goebel Krumholtz, ‘02, Kyle Goebel, ‘06, Kerry Goebel, ‘06, and Kevin Goebel, ‘06.
Dave and Jan first became involved at the school 1993 as Extravaganza volunteers. In
1998, when he assumed responsibilities as Chair of the Order of Saint Thomas, Dave
worked diligently to develop a collaborative and constructive relationship between
the school’s governing Board and administration. Under Goebel’s tenure as Board
Chair, the school completed three capital campaigns to build the Theater, Auxiliary
Gym and St. Mary’s additions, implemented the Technology initiative, and renovated
the Chapel and Science Rooms. Saint Thomas Aquinas received the State of Kansas
Standard of Excellence recognition in both Math and English every year since the
award was established in 2001 until Dave’s retirement in 2010. While his children
were young, through their high school years and now as a grandfather -- despite being
an executive / director for Rent-a-Center, Boston Market, Applebee’s, Jack-in-the-Box
and Mr. Goodcents -- Dave puts his family, his faith and the well-being of others first. Dave Goebel
His compassion and selflessness to help others sets Dave apart. He is a member of
the U.S. Faculty of Mentors for Merryck & Co. He takes time to meet with individuals looking for guidance concerning
employment opportunities, business issues or personal questions. Goebel is Chairman of the Board for Children’s Mercy
(Hospital) Family Health Partners and teaches a class at the Children’s Mercy development institute on “Values and
Leadership Legacy.” A youth and high school sports coach for many years, Dave and his wife Jan are members of Holy
Spirit parish and grandparents of five with number six due in May.

Humility and generosity -- these words best express the qualities of
John and Barbara O’Donnell. Another example of alumni parents who
have remained involved in the mission of Saint Thomas Aquinas well
after their children graduated, John and Barb began their involvement
in the school even before their oldest child entered its halls. Willing
to help as part of the “grass roots” effort in the school’s early years,
the O’Donnells have participated for well over a decade as steering
committee members, Tournament Sponsor and event chairs for the
Mirocke Golf Classic -- ultimately benefitting the Guardian Angel Fund
at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School. Also active at the parish and
Archdiocesan level, Barb and John were 2004 Future Full of Hope
campaign chairs for Church of the Ascension parish where Barb is a
ministry leader and coordinator for funeral lunches since 1999. John is
a current board member of the Archbishop’s Call to Share Allocation
Committee and benefactor to the Archbishop’s Crosier Society. Longtime supporters of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, Barb has served as a member of the Catholic Charities
Board of Directors, Women’s Golf Classic steering committee and event chair, Women’s Auxiliary member and current
president, and Development Committee member. Since 1996, Barb has also served as board member and chair of the
Johnson County Christmas Bureau and the Client Services Committee, helping to establish innovative ideas and new
procedures for the organization that serves over 14,000 low-income residents each year. Barb and John enjoy golf and
traveling, and even then share their service by volunteering for their golf-community associations. Their children are
Johnny O’Donnell, ‘97, Patrick O’Donnell, ‘01 (STA alumna daughter-in-law Carrie Furman O’Donnell, ‘01, and Jen
O’Donnell Forrest, ‘04. Barb and John have two grandchildren, Abigail and Jacob O’Donnell.
Legacy Award
The recipient of the 2013 inaugural Saints Hall of Fame Legacy Award, honoring persons or organizations who have
been instrumental in helping to build the Saints community over a number of years, is MRZ Corporation.
The partnership’s generous contributions to Aquinas 2000 helped launch the school into the next millennium. As
geographic growth continued to the south and west and demand for Catholic secondary education in the Archdiocese
continued to increase, the original facilities for Saint Thomas Aquinas High School had to be expanded and enhanced.
Air-conditioning, additional classrooms and a new performing arts theater were the result of the Aquinas 2000 campaign.
“MRZ,” abbreviated for ‘McAnany, Rieke, Zarda’ includes Richard (dec) & Betty McAnany, Leo & Helen Rieke,
Max, ‘39, (dec) and Frances Rieke (dec), Tom, ‘52, & Mickey Zarda, ‘53, and Ben, ‘45, & Betty Zarda.
Well over 25 grandchildren of the MRZ principals have attended or graduated from Saint Thomas Aquinas
High School since its opening in 1988.

Alumni Parent
Janet Koch, true champion of young
people
Many students, parents, alumni
and friends became acquainted with
John and Janet Koch through their
daughters: part of the successful “new
millennium” Saints Girls Basketball
program beginning in 1999 under the
direction of current head coach Rick
Hetzel.
Many will recognize Kacie Koch
Joyner, ‘00, and her younger sister,
Molly Koch Spencer, ‘02, who
were members of the 1999 and
2000 5A sub-state championship
teams. Another Koch “sister”
caught the attention of Saints fans
-- including in 2001 when the Lady
Saints earned their first-ever (6A)
State Championship title. Ebony
Haliburton, ‘02, stole the heart of
fans and first of Janet Koch with her
outgoing personality, enthusiasm and
zest for life.
The Koch family first met Ebony
Haliburton, ‘02, through AAU
summer basketball when she and
Molly were on the same team. The
Koch family learned that if Ebony
wanted to fulfill her dream of going
to college, she would need some
assistance changing high schools. Janet
took the lead, worked with Ebony’s
family and the Saint Thomas Aquinas
administration. The result was Ebony
attending STA
beginning her
sophomore year.
Ebony moved in
with the Koch’s
and became “one
of the family,”
joining the rest
of the Koch kids,
Shannon Lueker,
‘92, Kacie, ‘00,
Molly, ‘00 and
Andy Koch, ‘05.

anniversary.

Bottom row, left-to-right: Janet, John, Shannon
Janet served as Ebony’s surrogate
mother amid the daily routine
of those high school years with
encouragement from the rest of the
family.
Janet and John, always willing
to roll up their sleeves to help out,
were active members of the parent
community while their children
attended Saint Thomas Aquinas
High School. In addition to the
Kochs’ dedicated involvement in their
children’s sports and other activities,
the couple served as Blue & Gold
Annual Fund Steering Committee
members, two-time chairs of Project
Graduation (2000 and 2004), and
chairs of the 2001 Extravaganza Live
Auction.
It is this willingness
and desire to help others,
especially young people,
that motivated Janet.
Unfortunately, her life was
cut short last year. Janet was
diagnosed with an autoimmune disease several
years ago and died from
related complications on
March 15, 2012.
John and Janet Koch
Despite her illness, Janet was the
wind beneath not only her children’s
wings, but also for the friends of
her children. She loved to open
her heart to others, spending many
quality days with family and friends
at the ‘Koch Family Retreat’ lake
house in Wisconsin. A devoted
wife and mom who could make
the simplest occurrence seem like a
celebration, Janet was a “pied piper”
who personified what it means to
live a respectful and dignified life of
humility and grace.
In honor and memory of Janet, her
family and friends have established
the Janet Koch Memorial Scholarship
Fund, which will provide annual
scholarships for young women who
are in need of financial assistance to
attend Saint Thomas Aquinas High
School as an avenue to achieve their
dreams.
On Monday, February 4, 2013, at
halftime of the Saints vs. Bishop Miege
Stags girls basketball game, Janet will
be remembered and her family will
formally present the scholarship to
Saint Thomas Aquinas High School.

Scholarship Fund, contact Michon

All-Years Boys Soccer Alumni
Reunion -- a salute to STA’s soccer
program
On August 24, the Saints played
St. James on the new turf before a
standing-room-only crowd. At halftime, TV sports announcer Frank
Boal introduced the 1994 and 2009
National Championship teams.
Sporting KC players Michael Thomas,
‘06, and Kyle Miller, ‘07, joined
the former players on the field to

retired and Kyle Miller had been
inducted into the Saints Soccer Hall

The sportscaster extolled the Saint
Thomas Aquinas soccer program by
claiming it put Kansas City soccer
on the map and calling it “the best
high school program in the nation.”
A 3-1 win over St. James capped off
the evening and was followed by a
reception in the Commons for soccer
alumni hosted by current soccer
parents. It was apparent that Coach
Craig Ewing has consistently attracted
outstanding players to Saint Thomas

Saints Stampede Surpasses
Expectations
Our sincere gratitude goes out to
the Saints Stampede Sponsors and
donors for their involvement in this
first-time event.
The first annual Saints Stampede was a huge
success with over 1,400 people attending!
A dedicated, hard-working committee
co-chaired by parents Troy and Nancy Reazin
began meeting in early spring to prepare for the
August 11 event. Everyone breathed a sigh of
relief when weather temperatures in the mid-60’s
were announced -- providing the first hint that it

crowd in prayer. This was followed by music by
The Brigade, the school song led by the choir and a balloon-Rosary Lift
sponsored by Teens for Life.
The 5K race, Fun Run for young children and Stroller Strut for parents
pushing infants and toddlers made this an all-inclusive day. In the
Commons, Treat America provided a pancake breakfast for almost 1,000
diners as guests enjoyed the photo booth and 20+ child-friendly activities
hosted by current student teams and clubs. Retired and former faculty and
staff were on hand to catch up with one another. The Stampede was such a
hit that it is destined to be “must have” annual event -- a superb communitybuilder that reaches out to current and past families that was also just plain
fun and exciting!

Extravaganza 2012
The Saint Thomas Aquinas High
School community has had a lot
to celebrate in 2012 and the Saints
Silverbration was no exception
when over 700 guests met in the
“explosively” decorated Commons
and Gym on Saturday, November 10.
Special thanks to the over 200 steering
committee members and parent
volunteers, faculty and staff, Show
Choir, Jazz Band and Senior Envoys
for their important role in making
Extravaganza a $225,000 success.
Archbishop Joseph Naumann opened
the evening’s remarks, followed by
a presentation from Brian Schenck
and Craig Moss to Dr. Ford: a Saint
Thomas Aquinas football jersey with
25th-Year and Blue Ribbon School
logo patches. Dr. Ford acknowledged
the guests, donors and volunteers
and thanked the over 20 previous
Extravaganza General Co-Chairs
in attendance for their role in the
success of Saint Thomas Aquinas and
Extravaganza. A successful FundA-Need was introduced by John
Michaels, 1990 alumnus and current
parent. Pledges exceeding $20,000
will help fund the newly established
Alumni Scholarship Fund (see page
11). Immediately following the Live
Auction was music provided by a live
band, Cherry Bomb: a perfect way for
the energetic and ecstatic guests to
celebrate Saints Silverbration and the
camaraderie of the Saints community.
Decorations co-chair, Mary Luther used Saint Thomas
Aquinas’ 25th Year and Saints Silverbration as her inspiration
to create the transformation of the gym into an explosion of
“fireworks.”

Kathy & Kevin Killilea celebrated the great success of the Live
Auction line-up of 30 outstanding items. Among the most popular
live items were fine wines, trips to Ireland and Riveria Maya,
tickets to Sprint Center and Sporting Park events, along with shows
SNL and Dancing with the Stars.

Abbot Barnabas Senecal both
participated in the opening prayers
and remarks.

decorations.
Left: The “Celebration Box” was a
new and very successful addition to
Extravaganza! For $100, every box
included $100 in local restaurant gift
certificates and a chance to win one of
thirty additional prizes. Senior Envoys
Joseph Radetic, Tyler Clement, Hunter
Swanson, Kelsey Boschert, Natalie
Kutney and Sara Lopez did a terrific
job of selling all 200 boxes!
Many faculty members helped in the silent
auction, beverage and bank areas. Rick
Hetzel, Brian White and Lorne Parks prepare
to serve the guests.

Aquinas High School through your company’s matching gift program!
To determine your eligibility, check with your employer to see if your gift to a
Catholic school can be matched. You may also visit www.matchinggifts.com to check
if a specific company will match your charitable gift.
If your company offers such a program, all you need to do is obtain a matchinggift form at your workplace and submit it to the Saint Thomas Aquinas High
School Office of Advancement. We’ll do the rest for you! Contact the Office of
Advancement at 913-319-2425 with questions or for more information.

“Anything Goes”
Delights Audiences
A large cast and crew coordinated by
the Saint Thomas Aquinas performing
arts department presented the musical
Anything Goes over the weekend of
November 2. Stage director Hank
Koehn, music director Joe Heidesch,
choreographer Carolyn Braverman
and production manager Kim
Harrison joined forces to bring the
fast-paced show to the Saint Thomas
Aquinas stage.
The show is set in 1934 aboard the
oceanliner S. S. American, where
nightclub singer Reno Sweeney is en
route from New York to England.
With the help of some elaborate
disguises, tap-dancing sailors and oldfashioned blackmail, Reno and public
enemy Moonface Martin join forces to
help her pal Billy in his quest to win
his love’s heart. The lively music of
Cole Porter is what makes this show a
perennial favorite. And it was one that
highlighted the outstanding singing,
dancing and acting talent of many
Saint Thomas Aquinas students.
Sarah Gabriel appeared as Reno
Sweeney, Grace Weissend as Hope
Harcourt, Natalie Kutney as
Evangeline Harcourt, Spencer Gochis
as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, Ben Trickey
as Elisha Whitney, Jack Luther as
Billy Crocker, Andrew Walberg as
Moonface Martin, Alexis Leikam
as Erma, Daniel Robison as Luke,
Joe Kennedy as John, and Austin
Tedder as the ship’s captain. It was a
huge effort that included many other
performers, musicians, production
team, and volunteers culminating in a
high-caliber production.
Above, the large cast and crew assembled for a picture on the set of “Anything Goes,” which
played to standing-room-only audiences. Below, a close-up glimpse of the performance.
From Canasaurus to Catholic Charities!
On October 29, the
Saint Thomas Aquinas
Student Council launched
the “2012 Canasaurus
Rex Food Drive.” Right,
sophomore student
council representatives
Maddie McCormick,
Claire Ferguson, Matthew
McCrave and Seth
Castinado worked to
coordinate food donations.
The drive was a huge success with a grand total of 95,665 cans collected
for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas Catholic Charities Food
Pantry. Once again it was the charity’s largest single source drive that
helps fill the pantry shelves right before the holiday season. STA received
a big thank-you from Catholic Charities to every student and parent who
donated, helped sort cans, pack boxes and load the trucks! The theme
reflects the gigantic, colossal size of the Saints’ annual food drive!

Homecoming 2012
The Saint Thomas Aquinas High School community
celebrated its 25th Homecoming the week of September
24-29. The festivities included theme-days, pep assembly,
class skits, Homecoming Mass and a homecoming
tailgate and the presentation of the homecoming court
at half-time of the game Friday, September 28 vs. BV.
Pictured above are members of the 2012 Saint Thomas Aquinas
Homecoming Court: Lindsey Whigham, Catherine Kluempers, Alexis

Tyler Clement, Kyle Lickteig, Hunter Swanson, Michael Peck.
Hannah Pyle and Michael Peck were crowned queen and king at halftime of the Homecoming Football game against Blue Valley North on
Friday, September 28.
You’ve heard of a relay race, but what about a “rosary
relay”? On Sunday, October 7, the Saint Thomas Aquinas
community joined together in the new Courtyard Rosary
Garden for a moving spiritual experience. All members of
the Saints community were invited to pick a 30-minute shift
from 3-9 p.m. to pray the “walking rosary.” The event was
sponsored by the STA Teens for Life Club and held on the
same day as the Archdiocesan Pro-Life Chain.

New Faculty
Saints Siblings Realizing
Their Dreams
New Faculty: Bryan Thelen
A new teacher has joined the
Saints faculty, but he’s not new
to the Saints community. Bryan
Thelen, 2008 Saint Thomas
Aquinas graduate, returned to his
alma mater in August to teach three
sections of German II. And he
reports that he likes being on “the
other side of the desk.”
Bryan graduated from the
University of Kansas in 2012 with
a BA in German and a minor in
French. During the summer of his senior year, he had the
opportunity to study in Europe through KU. Some of the
time was spent in Holzkirchen, Germany, where he lived
with a German widow to whom he credits learning “so
much German (language) and about German culture.” The
experience helped him feel much more comfortable about
his speaking abilities after living there.
Above, Jennifer Shoreman, ‘97, Danielle
Shoreman, ‘02, and Mark Shoreman, ‘00, at his
kindergarten graduation under a sign that states
“when I grow up I want to be a doctor.”
Bryan was born and raised in Shawnee, Kansas, and
attended St. Joseph elementary school. He is the middle
child born to Phil, ‘77, and Terri Vohland Thelen, ‘78, both
alumni of St. Joseph’s who met in high school. His sister
Megan Thelen Taylor, ‘04, teaches 5th grade in the De Soto
School District and recently had a baby. Jeff Thelen, ‘12,
attends K-State.
Saint Thomas Aquinas has the same basic feel (as a
teacher) according to Bryan, although there’s a difference in
the energy. These days, instead of being excited for the pep
rallies or spirit days, he gets excited when a concept comes
together for his students. The new teacher really loves “the
meat and bones of a foreign language,” and thus gets excited
about things like grammar and vocabulary.
He also enjoys the fact that he’s in a position to help form
young people.
Doctors now -- Danielle Shoreman, M.D. a
2011 graduate from the University of Cincinnati
Medical School, who practices Internal Medicine in
Cincinnati, Ohio; Mark Shoreman, M.D. a graduate
of Wright State University Boonshoft School of
Medicine in Dayton, Ohio, and now a post-graduate
third year Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
doctor at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio;
and Jennifer Shoreman, M.D., a 2007 graduate of
Ohio State University College of Medicine and a
primary care physician in Indianapolis, Indiana.
“Society wants to tell them that it’s OK to act one way,”
Bryan explains, “and it is great to be able to share the Gospel
of Jesus Christ with them and to help form them for their
end purpose, which is union with God in Heaven.”
In high school, Bryan said he thought he knew how
everything worked and how his life would turn out. But as a
freshman in college, he quickly discovered that in terms of
how much there is to learn, he actually knew very little. As
college progressed he again thought he had life all figured
out but now realizes that there is still so much to learn. For
sure he has gained an appreciation of his parents, adding
that, “They really did know what they were talking about.”
“Parents have a wealth of wisdom to share with us,” said
Bryan.
