The source of the grant is the Returning God’s Gifts Endowment Fund. This gift helps us make progress on our payments for the construction loan which allowed us to complete our school expansion. We have been so richly blessed by the generosity of so many who have made the construction of our beautiful church and school possible. This assistance from the Archdiocese is an affirmation of your hard work and commitment to our mission. We still have a loan balance of $2,000,000; the upcoming “Beyond Sunday” campaign will be another opportunity for us to support Catholic Education and reduce our loan balance. Please pray about how you may help us finish this great work which God has begun in you. I will provide frequent updates in this space as we strive to be good stewards of God’s gifts. Let us commend this great work and our important mission to Mary, our Mother. Per Matrem Ad Filium, Fr. Mitch Fourth Sunday of Easter April 17, 2016 May you find Christ here . . . May you bring Christ to the world. Right before walking down the aisle to receive her First Communion, one of our second graders was asked, “Are you ready?” She responded, “I can’t believe this is finally happening! I get to be with Jesus!” “I am fairly new to this parish and I wanted you to know that it meant the world to me that my whole family could receive communion with our twin daughters at their First Communion!” Our Parish School of Religion second graders baked bread and took over to Nuns at the Most Precious Blood Motherhouse. A thank you note was returned saying, “Thank you for sharing your bread with us. We promise to pray for you.” Have You Been Confirmed? If you have received the sacrament of First Communion but have not yet received Confirmation call Fr. Mitch at 636-240-3721, ext. 242 and you can have a conversation with him to determine eligibility. Confirmation is taking place on Pentecost Sunday. Fourth Sunday of Easter April 17, 2016 Looking For a Way to Make a Difference? Jubilee Year of Mercy Catholic Charities has a new advocacy and policy web page: https://catholiccharitiesusa.org/advocacy-and-policy In the Gospel of Luke, we find another important element that will help us live the Jubilee with faith. Luke writes that Jesus, on the Sabbath, went back to Nazareth and, as was his custom, entered the synagogue. They called upon him to read the Scripture and to comment on it. The passage was from the Book of Isaiah where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and freedom to those in captivity; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Is 61:1-2). A “year of the Lord’s favor” or “mercy”: this is what the Lord proclaimed and this is what we wish to live now. This Holy Year will bring to the fore the richness of Jesus’ mission echoed in the words of the prophet: to bring a word and gesture of consolation to the poor, to proclaim liberty to those bound by new forms of slavery in modern society, to restore sight to those who can see no more because they are caught up in themselves, to restore dignity to all those from whom it has been robbed. The preaching of Jesus is made visible once more in the response of faith which Christians are called to offer by their witness. May the words of the Apostle accompany us: he who does acts of mercy, let him do them with cheerfulness (cf. Rom 12:8). 16 Advocacy & Policy Not everyone who needs help has the ability to ask, which is why giving a voice to the voiceless has been a key part of our mission from the very start. It’s our hope that through strategic advocacy — informed by the work of our member agencies — the stories of those most affected by poverty can become the very tools we use to eradicate it. Our Work We help governments better understand poverty’s impact on the American economy and family, and educate policymakers on the ways people in need are being served by their local Catholic Charities agencies. We also work to engage those most affected by governmental decisions in sharing their experiences, which in turn helps to improve our policies. Advocacy Efforts Ending poverty isn’t just a question of money — a family’s well-being should be evaluated by factors more holistic than merely its gross monthly income. That’s why we focus our advocacy efforts on the five areas that we believe must be addressed to sustainably end poverty, with special concern for the most vulnerable groups in our society. How You Can Help Participation in our political process is a privilege and responsibility made even more precious by the realization that your voice could be the only one speaking for millions without a voice of their own. We rely on supporters like you to help amplify our positions and to carry our messages to policymakers and other people with influence by signing petitions, writing to elected officials, and learning more about our issues. From the first tithe that Abraham offered to Melchizedek to our present day habits of charitable giving, the purpose of tithing is to draw us more closely in relationship with Jesus. While we provide information regarding the operations of our mission, please know that our deepest hope as a community is that we will all give of ourselves for the building up of the Kingdom. The precise definition of “tithe” is one tenth. We are encouraged to give 5% of all our possessions to the church and 5% to other charities. If you do not yet tithe, please prayerfully consider doing so as part of your journey in faith. God bless you. Ralph Schmitz Father of Steve Schmitz Fr. Fourth Sunday of Easter April 17, 2016 Life, Peace and Restorative Justice TIPS FOR PRACTICING AND VALUING DIVERSITY • Actively solicit input from a wide variety of people and functions. • Involve diverse groups in solving problems and developing opportunities. • Challenge your own and others’ assumptions that limit opportunities. • Seek to understand diversity from a global, not just a national, perspective. • When asking someone to explain a point of view different from your own, be sure to convey that your intention is to understand that person's viewpoint, not to have him or her justify it. • Stand up and speak out when others are not valued or their ideas or views are not heard or taken into account. • Be sensitive to the fact that some people want their differences to be recognized while others do not. • Watch any tendencies to joke about differences. When you do hear joking, take a stand and let others know that you are offended. • Talk openly about the tension between the need to value and accept different perspectives and opinions, and the desire for shared organizational values. • Become a mentor to an individual whose background and experiences are different from your own. • Broaden your view of diversity beyond just race or gender issues. • Look at issues and opportunities from others' viewpoints before making decisions. • Talk openly about the amount of time it may take to change the organization's acceptance of people who are different. • Challenge organizational policies and practices that may be exclusionary. • Build a support network with colleagues who are interested in valuing diversity. • Continually monitor your automatic thoughts and language for unexamined assumptions and stereotypical responses. • Learn how to manage disagreements for ways to handle conflicts that may arise.
