But dance does offer hope that structured movement, accompanied by music, is in some real sense restorative. Once we enter the magic circle represented by those who participate in the dance, we forget the travail engendered by the disease.” HSDC Parkinson’s Project participant 23 E d u cat ion & C o m m un i t y P ro g r a m s a r e s u pp o r t e d b y : General Support Movement As Partnership Leading Foundation Supporter Principal Corporate Contributor Lead Community Partner Principal Sponsor, Movement as Partnership Program Chicago Public Schools Helen Brach Foundation Leo S. Hubbard Street reduced its operating deficit by 58% compared to organizations and honored McDonald’s Corporation and legendary FY2010. The deficit was partially composed of depreciation expenses that we choreographer Twyla Tharp. The event raised more than $750,000 and did not need cash to fund. marked the beginning of a renewed relationship with Tharp, who returned to Hubbard Street embarked on a series of new funding strategies in FY2011, including developing project-based fundraising committees comprised of individuals who have interests in specific programming and launching Harold and the Purple Crayon: A Dance Adventure to tap into a new market for touring revenue for HS2. These activities had much success – Celebrating the Art of Israel (Spring Series) was one of the highest grossing series in Hubbard Street’s history at the Harris with over $117,000 raised in earned revenue and $212,000 raised in contributions, and Harold and the Purple Crayon performed to sold-out audiences throughout the country, including performances that were added in Chicago by popular demand. We expect to see continued increases in revenue in 2012. 29 Hubbard Street to create a new work for the company for the first time in 15 year to premiere in the 2011-12 season. “My first show was maybe the most memorable part of my first year at Hubbard Street. I was filling in last minute for someone in a part I had not been studying in a piece I’d never seen. The way that all of the other dancers helped me with their words in rehearsals and their eyes onstage during the show really was a memorable experience. I mean, how often do you have complete strangers invest in your success and genuinely help? It was then that I knew this was a special place.” Jesse Bechard, Hubbard Street Dancer 30 FINANCIALS STATEMENTS OF FINANCIAL POSITION AS OF AUGUST 31, 2011 AND 2010
