Principal June 2012 Jason Eidinger Asst. Principal http://gjhs.mesa.k12.co.us Jami Moore Asst. Principal Ned Pollert Activities Director 2011 – 2012 No. 7 A Message from the Principal: On May 15, 2012, 364 members of the 100th senior class from Grand Junction High School and several early completers from the Class of 2013 received their diplomas in a bright, sunny ceremony held at Stocker Stadium. On behalf of the entire staff and faculty and administrative team of GJHS, I want to personally thank all of the parents/guardians and significant others who raised our seniors for the love, encouragement, and support they provided their student over the past twelve years, and more specifically for the time they spent at Grand Junction High School. It is our hope that we lived up to the expectations you had for us and that you feel that the value of a Junction education and the preparation given to our graduates is priceless. Graduates, we are so proud of you! Over the past four years you set the standards for the student body in many areas to include: student leadership; your behavior in and out of school; academics; service learning contributions to the community; sportsmanship at home and away sporting events; and your involvement and level of excellence is our co-curricular programs. I also commend you for an outstanding Baccalaureate Service and a truly wonderful Commencement Ceremony. They were the best I have seen in my five years as the principal at Grand Junction High School! As we say good bye to the Class of 2012, here IS just a part of the legacy of excellence the Class leaves behind as we send them off to meet the challenges of the future: Over 40, 332 service learning hours, 144 students recognized as Millennium Club honorees, who completed 112 or more service learning hours, 33 Superintendent Scholars with a 4.0 or higher grade point average (GPA) in all four years of high school, 8 students who graduated early, 131 students earned a 3.5 GPA or higher, 57 students were members of one or more of our four honor societies, 16 graduates plan to serve our Country in the military, and 65 graduates received one or more of 129 scholarships See the inserts for a list of the graduates of the Class of 2012 and Class of 2013. We have also included students who were recognized at the All School Awards Ceremony, students who earned Honor Roll recognition for the 4th quarter, students who had perfect attendance for the 4th quarter, and our athletic and other co-curricular accomplishments during the spring. As we say good bye to this school year, our master schedule is almost complete, with some fine tune adjustments to be made. Before we know it, August and student check-in will be here. Please check the calendar at the back of the newsletter for some important dates in August and September. 1 I closing I would like to thank all of you for another great school year. It has been a pleasure working with our great students and watching them grow, mature, and excel. I wish you and your family a wonder, safe summer and we are looking forward to seeing you in August. Go Tigers! Go Orange and Black! Jon F. Bilbo Principal Personnel Cuts Have a Slight Impact on Junction The latter part of May and the early part of June were traumatic for many schools across the district as principals met with certified and classified personnel to pass on budget cuts that resulted in the loss of either teachers, teacher aides, or support staff. At Junction, we did not completely escape the budget cuts, but we were spared some of the heavy cuts other schools faced. In the end, we lost three classified and one certified personnel. The former positions were directly related to the budget cuts. They were Denise Wille, our library secretary; Penny Martens, our Special Education Secretary; and Steve Latta, our LEAG Advocate. Denise will be replaced by another secretary who had more seniority and whose position in one of the middle schools was eliminated. Penny’s position will not be filled, but we did pick up an additional special education teacher to offset her loss. Steve’s position will not be filled, but we may receive additional support in August if a grant is approved. The full time equivalent (FTE) teaching position (certified position) is really a combination of two half time positions that were being vacated through retirements. One half of the FTE came from Mrs. Pat Holcomb’s retirement as our part-time Latin teacher, and the other ½ FTE came from the Student Learning Center/Business Department and Mrs. Gladys Kelher’s retirement. The programs that were affected because of these cuts will be adjusted accordingly. Students who selected Level I Latin will be placed in another level one world language course. Level 2 and higher students may be provided online opportunities to complete the level of Latin they requested for next year. The coverage of the Student Learning Center will be provided by other teachers from the Business Department. Junction Says Good Bye Each year a number of staff and faculty retire or move on to take another step in their life’s journey. This year we say fond farewell and best wishes to the following staff and faculty: LeAnn Abram, Special Education Teacher Gwynn Barrows, Secretary to the Assistant Principals Andrew Bilger, Custodian Emily Bollinger, Business Teacher Stuart Church, Math Teacher Elizabeth Elliott, Special Education Assistant Vicki Farmer, Instructional Assistant Dustin Giesenhagen, Counselor Zeb Hayward, Social Studies Teacher Pat Holcomb, Latin Teacher Amy Johnson-Lambert, Math Teacher Rick Jussel, English Teacher Gladys Kelher, Business Teacher Olivia Krzmarzick, Science Teacher Steve Latta, LEAG Advocate Danielle Love, Spanish Teacher Penny Martens, Special Education Secretary Jean McFadzen, English Teacher Megan McFarland, Math Teacher Charlotte McNabb, Special Education Teacher Mallory Schmalz, Physical Education Teacher Denise Wille, Library Secretary 2 Tigers Roarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Celebrating its 35th anniversary as a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) this year, HOSA includes 138,000 active members in the U.S. and its territories and boasts 2.1 million alumni. The top 5300 students gathered this year in Orlando to compete in over 50 events. The state of Colorado was represented by 113 members. Twelve of those members were from the HOSA Chapters of Colorado Mesa University and Western Colorado Community College. Nine of the twelve students were competitors. The other three individuals were members of the National Courtesy Corps. At the awards ceremonies on Saturday, Colorado had ten students place in the top ten as National Finalists - six of those top ten were from programs at CMU/WCCC. Competing against over 60 other teams in Public Health Emergency Preparedness, the team of Mikayla O'Brien, Maya Freismuth, and Laura Bloom (all three Junction Tigers) and Kyra Dowd (Vision) received a top ten finalist recognition and finished in 7th place in the nation. In addition, Kyra Dowd received a Presidential Service Award for community service and Theresa Bloom was honored as the outstanding advisor from Colorado. This is the second year in a row that our programs were responsible for all of Colorado's medals and most of its finalists! Rounding out the competitors and receiving certificates for attendance and participation were: Kylie Haas, Vision, Prepared Speaking; Rachael Trogdon, Grand Junction High School, 2nd round finalist Physical Therapy; and Jessie Hicks, FMHS, Medical Photography. Working as courtesy corps members and representing Colorado were Mariah Lopez, PHS; Melissa LaPlant, Grand Junction High School, and Kristi Standback, GRVA. The state of Colorado also received two medals - both are from our post-secondary programs. Kaitlyn Bloom, who recently graduated from WCCC's first Medical Assisting Program, was awarded the Gold Medal for her first place finish in Medical Assisting! Jenny Hicks, a CMU student and Med Prep grad, received a Bronze Medal for third place finish in Physical Therapy!! FCCLA In April, the GJHS Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) traveled to the State FCCLA Conference held in Denver. Members attending were required to develop a plan to better help their school, community or family in which they would then create a project and present it to a panel of judges at the competition. Among 1000 other FCCLA members from across Colorado, our own 4 sophomore Victoria Lara, junior Tia Williams, and junior Sage Copenhaver received Silver Medals for their accomplishments. Victoria’s project focused on comparing Day Care Centers in town to see which one would provide the best educational opportunities for children attending. Tia and Sage’s project focused on collecting food for the Kid’s Aide Backpack Program as well as helping to make others aware of the amount of students without access to food over the weekends. Baseball The Tiger Baseball Team finished the season with an overall record of 13 wins and 7 losses, with a Southwestern League record of 7 wins and 3 losses. The Tigers finished third in the Southwestern League behind Montrose and Durango. The Tigers were the top 5A team in the league and thus earned a 1st round playoff game against Ralston Valley, which we subsequently lose 3-0. The following senior Tigers were selected to the 1 st Team All Southwestern League: Sean Rubalcaba, Jeffrey Hansen, and Steven Baldwin. Seniors Marcus Wirth and Tyler Gastineau were selected to the 2nd Team All Southwestern League. Sean Rubalcaba was also selected as the Southwestern League Player of the Year, and he was selected to the Denver Post Class 5A Honorable Mention Team. With Sean’s selection as the Southwestern League Baseball Player of the Year, he joins only a handful of student-athletes who have won two Player of the Year honors in the same year. Coach Rush Steps Down After twelve seasons at the helm of the Tiger baseball program Coach Kyle Rush decided to step down. Under Coach Rush’s leadership the Tigers compiled a record of 182 wins and 73 losses. During his tenure, the Tigers won eight (8) Southwestern League titles, and Coach Rush was voted by his peers as the SWL Coach of the Year six (6) times. His teams made twelve straight play-off appearances, and earned three final eight appearances in the state play-offs. In 2005, Coach Rush lead the Tigers to the Class 5A State Championship crown, and was named the 2005 Colorado High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year for all classifications. Also, in 2005, Coach Rush was selected as Head Coach of the All-Colorado All-Star Game. Coach Rush also coached the 2005 Colorado Player of the Year, Dane Hamilton, as well as eight other All-State players. Coach Rush has also been instrumental in building Grand Junction High School’s Fanning Field into one of the gems of high school baseball diamonds in western Colorado. Over the past twelve years he has raised close to $70,000 to make improvements to the Tiger’s home field. Girls Golf This year’s Lady Tiger Golf team was a young team with two seniors and ten (10) 9 th and 10th graders. The Lady Tigers placed first at the Fruita Tournament, and finished in the top 5 in the team standings in most of the other tournaments. Lacrosse The Tiger Lacrosse Team finished the season with an overall record of 10 wins and 3 losses and placed third in the Mountain League behind Aspen and Durango. The following Tigers were June 2012 Newsletter selected to the 1st Team All Mountain League: Megan Gromke and Holly Meer. Kacie Jay and Mallory Pilcher were selected to the 2nd Team All Mountain League. Soccer After winning the Southwestern League Championship in 2011 and losing nine starting seniors, 2012 was going to be a rebuilding year for the Lady Tigers. However, a group of outstanding freshmen and a rookie interim head coach had something to say about that notion. The girls went on to have a very good season with 10 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie and a 2nd place finish in the Southwestern League behind Durango. Key conference victories included wins over Fruita twice and Durango on the road and another tremendous road victory against Valor Christian, the 2011 Class 4A State Champions. The Tigers earned a 1st round playoff game against Fairview, which we subsequently lose. Five Tigers earned all-league recognition. Rabbit Hansen, Taylor Chaffetz, and Leah Swander were named to the 1st Team All Southwestern League while Lexi Anderson and Sam Melchor were selected to the 2nd Team All Southwestern League. Freshman Leah Swander also led the league in scoring with 15 goals. Swimming The D51 Griffith Men’s Swim and Dive Team is composed of student-athletes from all four district high schools. The 2012 swimming and diving season was a very successful season for the Griffiths. The following boys qualified to compete in the state championship tournament: Austin Acree-100 fly relay, 100 back relay; Tyler Fair-100 back and 100 breast relays; Carlos Matthews-100 fly and 500 freestyle; Eric Jacobs-all relays; Nick Stubler-diving, and CJ Gonzales-diving alternate and Nathan Seller. Nick Stubler was awarded the Southwestern League Swimmer/Diver of the Year. Beside a successful league championship, the Griffins took 12 swimmers/divers to the Class 5A State Championship at the EPIC Center in Fort Collins, CO. The Griffiths had two relay teams and two individuals finish in the Top 20 finishers at state. They included: the 200 Medley Relay Team which finished 15th, the 200 Freestyle Relay Team which finished 19th, Tyler Fair, who finished 17th in the 100 Backstroke; and Nick Stubler who finished 19th in diving Track and Field This year’s track and field season was very successful with the boys’ team winning the Southwestern League Championships and the girls’ team finishing in second place. On the last throw of the competition and the last throw of his high school career, CJ set a new school record in the shot put with a throw of 56 feet, 1.75 inches. Junior DeShawn Harris finished in 4th place in the shot put and 6th place in the discus. Jami Derrieux competed June 2012 Newsletter in the 100m hurdles and the 300m hurdles. She was also a member of the 4X100 Relay Team and 4X200 Relay Team. Other members of the 4X100 Relay Team were Whitney Jackson, Emily Robbins and Sabrina Trujillo. Junction Welcomes New Cross Country Coach We are pleased to welcome Mrs. Kim Dobson to the Tiger Coaching Staff. Coach Dobson is a 2001 graduate of Arapahoe High School where she competed on the cross country team. She attended Colorado State University, and graduated in 2006 with an Early Childhood Teacher License. She has been a second grade teacher at Fletcher Elementary School in Aurora the past four years. She is an avid runner and is one of the most successful female runners in Colorado. She has competed and won numerous races in Colorado. We are excited about her leadership, enthusiasm, and running knowledge that Coach Dobson brings to our Tiger Cross Country Program. We look forward to seeing her out running with our cross country athletes. June 2012 Newsletter Tigers Roar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Relay for Life On Saturday, June 16, the GJHS POMs finished their first-ever Relay for Life. The girls wanted to give back to the community and thought this would be an outstanding way to do it. They earned well over a thousand dollars to go towards the American Cancer Society search for a cure. Out of our 21 girls, 18 were in town to participate. They walked non-stop from 6 PM to 9 AM (over 120 laps). Of our 17 ladies, 15 had been effected by the devastation of cancer (Rayvin Decker lost her father only 2 years ago). Most of the girls were celebrating the survivors, but some were celebrating the lives of loved ones who perished. I was in awe of the ladies, their commitment and dedication to live as proud Tigers. In addition to the POMS, three other teams from GJHS participated in the relay. How impressive that GJHS had this many organizations that were present and represented GJ. Great job to the other organizations who participated in this worthy activity. Siemens “We Change the World” Challenge For the second year in a row, a group of Junction students participated in the Siemens “We Change the World” Challenge and were selected as the top team in Colorado. The Siemens “We Change the World” Challenge is a free, project-based sustainability competition for grades 9-12. Using a project-based science inquiry approach teams of students are given the tools to research and recommend solutions to address environmental issues with a global impact while gaining 21st century skills. The Junction Team, named the Bigfoot Carbonators, included senior Rebecca Roskowski, sophomore Rachel Martin, sophomore Trevor Abbott, and sophomore John Wiman. The faculty advisor for the team was Mr. Steve Brown. By using only half lighting in classrooms for four hours a day, Team Big Food Carbonators reduced Grand Junction High School’s energy usage and caused a significant reduction in the CO2 produced to generate the original power. Special Note: This is Rebecca Roskowski’s second such state level award. Last year she and Daniel Lionberger were selected as the Colorado Finalist for their project on the reclamation and rejuvenation of spent oil shale. June 2012 Newsletter Changes in Transportation Services Walking distances for all students will be expanded by 1 mile for the 2012-2013 school year. This change is the result of further budget reductions the District is facing. Bus services will be provided for students living beyond 2 miles for elementary schools and 3 miles for middle and high schools. The District is currently working out the new routes. Hazards will be taken into account and may result in transportation being provided to students who are within these new boundaries. All federal statutes will still be observed for special education students with transportation needs. Specific information for your student(s) will be available via the District website (www.d51schools.org) in early August and at Back-to-School nights.
