Inspirational
Moments
“We want our works to have elegance, to be
expressive, to exude life, to have feelings. We want
them to reflect the good side of life, the positive
values of a human being, all that which dignifies life.”
Juan, José
and Vicente,
founders
of Lladró.
IN SEARCH OF EMOTION
THE SENTIMENT OF MUSIC, the passion of dance, the mystery of ancient cultures: beauty is found
in many places and this is where Lladró artists search for inspiration to create works in which the most
refined technique is always paired with emotion.
Different forms of music and dance have served as sources of inspiration for some of the season’s
most outstanding new creations, from the irresistible rhythm of Jazz trio to the intensity of Passionate
tango, as well as the classical gracefulness of Ready for practice or My perfect pose. Juan Lladró’s personal
favorite in this issue is Backstage ballet, another noteworthy piece inspired by dance. Porcelain takes
on a life and movement of its own thanks to the mastery of artists able to connect arts so close and at
once so distinct as music and sculpture.
Emotion always has a key place in our lives. It can help decorate our home and even bring imagination
and beauty to our dinner table. The new pieces in the Naturofantastic collection by Lladró Atelier, and
the new lithophane lamps show us how objects can be useful and at the same time express all the
talent and fantasy of artists in their elaborate, refined ornamentation.
The arrival of Spring is a time for the deepest human emotions in the form of Lladró creations. The
tree of Love is a sign of romance, a piece that can be customized to make it a cherished memento for
thousands of couples.
As a counterpoint to all this grace and sweetness, we have the imposing strength of mythological
beings in Guardian lions, the magnificent guardians of the home inspired by a tradition thousands of
years old, full of symbolism and exuberant ornamental beauty.
We have run out of space to mention many other new creations: charming childhood pieces,
tenderhearted motherhood, oriental fantasies and an impressive angelical being, in addition to the
many moments shared with friends from all over the world that remain forever in the Lladró Universe.

JAZZ SPIRIT
JAZZ is without doubt one of the soundtracks of our time. Originally
spawned by African American musicians from New Orleans, its warm,
syncopated rhythm soon became a universal language and a symbol of
the cultural melting-pot that defines our era. The scene is midnight in a
small club. The sax player improvises a soft, pervasive melody. The trumpeter responds with an energetic, vibrant sound while the bass player
marks out an irresistible beat that gets the audience’s feet tapping. In
Jazz trio Lladró artists have managed to capture this unmistakable world
of sensation and sound. We can almost feel the music just looking at
these three musicians who are at the center of a scene full of rhythm and
movement, a sculptural composition carefully studied from all angles.
The typical harmonies and contrasts in jazz are mirrored in the decoration
of the piece: the white suits stand out against the dark enamels of the
cube, on which the musicians are leaning, and the shiny golden luster of
the sax and the trumpet. The fine metal strings of the elegant double bass
are assembled after the piece is fired in the kiln.
Jazz trio is a heartfelt tribute to musicians and a declaration of love for
their art.

THE TREE OF LOVE
Life-affirming and powerful, love is the
feeling that keeps our feet on the ground
and, at the same time, gives us wings to fly.
A HEART etched on the bark of a tree is a universal
sign of love. The desire to join our name to that of our
loved one, to leave written proof of our love for each
other, is as strong and as forceful as a tree. The tree
of Love is the new Lladró creation paying a heartfelt
tribute to the most powerful and primordial human
passion. At the same time, it is a lasting memory for
two lovers because each sculpture can be customized
with their names, making it a truly unique piece. This
sign of love can be treasured forever in porcelain,
even longer-lasting than the strongest tree.

presenting is a worthy successor. Each one
of the three ballerinas in the composition
expresses herself with total naturalness,
creating a scene full of movement and, at
the same time, finely balanced.
As Juan Lladró points out, “in it, the beauty
and talent of each one of the dancers
is so clearly visible”. One is immediately
impressed by the dexterity of the sculptor,
not only in modeling the overall scene,
but in so faithfully capturing its myriad
details. Another noteworthy quality, that
strikes us when observing it closely, is
the soft coloring in the decoration. This is
especially true since “the high degree of
expressiveness in Backstage ballet means
that color is not the priority feature in
achieving the desired result”. Given its
excellent aesthetic and technical qualities,
we are looking at a work “that gives us
wings, frozen mid air in an eternal leap
towards excellence”.
Backstage ballet is, in short, a timeless
creation, and a sure candidate to become
a piece highly prized by porcelain lovers.
In this regard, Juan Lladró insisted on
“congratulating all those who have the
pleasure of possessing this limited edition
and I only wish that they enjoy it every bit
as much as we did creating it”.
Juan Lladró
Certain Lladró creations are
timeless because of their
themes, their expressiveness
and their high technical quality.
That is the case, for instance, of
some of the pieces the brand
has dedicated to the art of
movement over the years. It
comes as no surprise that Juan
Lladró chose Backstage ballet
as one of his favorite pieces,
describing it as “a harmonious
scene, yet complex to execute,
with an overall beauty that
only ballet is able to express
with such sensitivity”.

GUARDIAN LIONS
TWO IMPOSING animals stand guard over the home. These Guardian Lions are fantastic
creatures that bring good luck, protection and happiness.
The female (left) and male (right) are also symbols of the everlasting cycle of life: she has a
cub under her claw while he has a globe of the world under his. Lladró artists borrowed
their inspiration from traditional bronze, iron and granite sculptures standing
guard at the entrances to palaces, temples and noble houses in various Asian
countries. Recreating their majestic presence in porcelain was a difficult
test, involving many complex technical challenges. It was also the perfect
opportunity to apply the decorative expertise so characteristic of
large Lladró works to this traditional symbolic representation. The
painstaking ornamentation of the breastplates and armor, the
elaborate modeling of the manes and tails, plus the spectacular
decoration with enamels, golden luster and varnishes, make these
impressive sculptures a successful blend of a thousand year old
tradition and artistic creation.
Guardian Lions come in three different finishes, each one is a
special color range that gives the respective couple a personality
all of its own: from the strength of red, the elegance of black, to
the splendor of blue.

ROSA LLADRÓ visited Japan's two main
cities, Tokyo and Osaka, last September to
attend a series of signing events, mostly held
in stores from the Takashimaya chain and the
Lladró boutique in Ginza. A large number of
enthusiastic Lladró lovers did not want to miss
the presentation of the latest creations inspired
by Japanese culture, such as Fuji Musume, Hina
Dolls Festival and Warrior Boy. These pieces were
well received by the Japanese porcelain lovers,
many of which were delighted to take home
with them their favorite piece signed by a
member of the Lladró family.
The following month, Rosa travelled to the USA to
attend several signing events in Chicago, Detroit,
Miami, New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San
Jose. She also attended a High Porcelain event in
Tulsa. At each one she presented the piece Cherub
of love, which totally won over the audience. A
standout event on the tour was organized by
Desirée, a store in Toronto (Canada). They hosted

by Andrea and Gary Nielsen Bartlett, the owners
of Nielsens. A selection of High Porcelain pieces
was tastefully displayed in various rooms of their
beautiful home during a charity fundraiser which
attracted Nielsens best customers and patrons of
the Tulsa Opera. A part of the sales proceeds was

Ángeles LLADRÓ travelled to the UK to
attend the event held at Mulberry Hall in the
city of York, last November. The many lovers of
Lladró who turned up were delighted with the
exciting event, during which Spanish wine and
tapas were served. The highlight of the evening
was the presentation of Nude with shawl, a piece
for which Ángeles confessed a special fondness.
During an emotive speech, she underscored that
this creation wishes to reflect a combination of
the character and temperament of the Spanish
woman along with a heightened feminine
sensibility. A wide selection of new Lladró
creations and a beautiful Manila shawl similar to
the one featured in the piece was also displayed,
brought from Spain especially for the occasion.
Ángeles then travelled to Korea in December,
where she attended various events in Seoul along
with the sculptor Ignacio Aliena.

MOSCOW DESIGN WEEK was held for
the first time in the capital city of Russia last
October. Largely focused on designers and
architects, as well as the general public, this
exciting new project was created to heighten
the profile of innovative contemporary design.
Among the many activities organized for the
event was one called "Design Superheroes", an
idea by the celebrated Italian architect Fabio
Novembre. Among the "superheroes" were
such famous designers as Ora Ito, Maarten
Baas, Luigi Colani and Jaime Hayon. Each one
of these major designers staged a show of their
work in different venues in Moscow. Jaime
Hayon chose the first floor of the Altagamma
gallery where he presented his creations,
including several pieces from The Fantasy
collection by Lladró.
Last October Spanish design travelled to Japan
for the Tokyo Designer's Week 2010, with the
exhibition "Made in Japain, the true story of
Spanish Design". JAPAIN is the title of a new
project, conceived as an intersection between
Japanese and Spanish cultures. The exhibition
included pieces by some of Spain's top
design brands: Lladró, Manolo Blahnik, Jaime
Hayon, David Delfín, Nani Marquina, Camper,
Pretty Ballerinas and Tous. Lladró was also on
display in Design Tide, another of the events
organized for the Tokyo Designer's Week, where
it presented the brand's latest collections.

THE MILKMAID
An innocent young woman daydreams
as she takes her pail full of milk to the market:
"with the money from selling the milk I’ll
buy eggs, and lots of little chicks will hatch
from the eggs, I can then sell the chickens
and buy a pig..." Then, all of a sudden, she
trips and the pail spills over, shattering all
her dreams of prosperity. “Oh! What crazy
fantasies! What palaces you build in the
air!”, goes the Spanish version of the fable,
written by Samaniego. The author borrowed
his inspiration from the French fabulist La
Fontaine, who in turn drew from stories
from classical antiquity. In fact, we can trace
the story all the way back to Panchatantra,
a collection of Indian fables from the third
century BC. The poor milkmaid is therefore a
universal character from popular wisdom,
a warning not to confuse dreams with reality.
