But for some children, he is also someone with whom they can open their heart and speak freely. TC Media was able to speak with a professional Santa who has accumulated secrets for years. Sainte-Justine Hospital the chance to talk to Santa live from his office in the North Pole. An entire set was built for the occasion. “It was wonderful to see the children’s eyes as they discovered the world of Santa Claus.” When children get to the point where they no longer believe in Santa Claus, one thing is very important to him: “You have to let them make their own mind and not impose your own.” “For those who seem disoriented because they were told that this character does not exist, I ask them all the time, ‘You, do you believe in Santa Claus?’ If they answer yes, I say it’s for them to decide if they want to believe or not.” For children who are convinced that Santa Claus does not exist, his answer is simple. He tells them they just made it to the big league, and asks them not to tell their little brothers and sisters. “We’ll let them believe like you did. Santa is there to comfort them and bring them joy.” Paul, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been playing Santa for 15 years for the Santa Claus Association. He has seen thousands of kids. Every year, he accumulates stories worth sharing. “To be a good Santa Claus, you must love children, be attentive and receptive, and ask the right questions,” said Paul. “The children tell me about their school, their family and the gifts they wish to receive.” Separated parents Children of separated parents often tell him secretly that it is particularly difficult during Keep believing in Santa Claus Seeing joy in children’s faces is one of the rea- the festive season. These kids have to celebrate sons why this professional Santa Claus likes to Christmas one day with their mother and another day with their father, when they want evepersonify the popular bearded figure. Five years ago, Paul travelled to California ryone to be together for the holidays. “They ask me if I can do something about for an American telecommunications company to offer sick children residing at it. I tell them that Santa can do many things, but for this particular situation, there is nothing he can do. What is important is to make them understand that the conflict is between their father and mother and has nothing to do with them. I also tell them their parents love them very much. They need to be reassured so they do not take everything upon their shoulders.” The santa claus Association includes nearly 240 santas, 40 permanent and 200 casual. This organization exists since 1959. it assigns santas in office parties, corporate parties and shopping centers. several visits also take place in daycare centers, hospitals and seniors residences. Tc Media spoke with a professional santa clause who has been on the receiving end of many privileged conversations with West island children. TC Media - Keith McAuliffe kept repeating: “This is Grandpa Paul who is scared of him so he takes GrandPa’s voice for disguised as Santa Claus.” Her older sister, you not to be afraid.” “I will always remember that moment,” he five-years old, replied, “No, no, it’s Santa Claus, but don’t worry, he knows you are said with a smile. His two-year old grandson Story of the Week West Island food banks meet growing demand ● [email protected] The demand for non-perishable food items is growing as more families are in need of the services offered by food banks across the West Island. During its 9th annual Christmas basket distribution on Dec. 12-13 in Pierrefonds, the West Island Mission distributed large boxes of food to 296 families – 38 more than in 2013. “Believe it or not, we have to turn families away,” said Wendy Gariepy, the mission’s operations manager. Gariepy told the Chronicle prior to basket distribution that the food bank had to set a cutoff point of 300 registered families. “Logistically and financially, to pull off more than 300 baskets is a massive undertaking,” she said, adding that four families cancelled just before last week’s Christmas basket distribution. The real challenge, however, comes after the holidays when food banks, in general, must rely on their Christmas donations until the West island Mission volunteers help distribute baskets for 296 families on Dec. 13 in pierrefonds. summer. The mission is presently serving 40 families a week, up five year-over-year. At On Rock Community Services, volunteers are distributing baskets to 200 registered families a week – a 20 per cent increase since 2013, according to On Rock’s founder Kim Reid. That figure could grow substantially as 30 families are currently on the Pierrefonds organization’s waiting list. “The big thing now is how and where to find the extra food,” said Reid, who distributed 200 turkeys and Christmas baskets on Saturday. “I have the volunteers and the truck, but it’s about developing new networks so we can give consistently to new families.” To meet the growing demand of food banks across the West Island, the mission’s Gariepy is encouraging people to organize food drives beyond the Christmas holidays. “How great would it be to have a food drive once every few months?” said the operations manager. The mission distributed 2,021 baskets in 2013, 520 more than in 2012. When the organization was established in 2005, the West Island Mission distributed 725 baskets. The largest demographic presently served is immigrant families. But according to Gariepy, the mission is seeing “a sizeable increase in people with mental health issues.” “A lot of it has to do with the economy and people suffering from depression and anxiety,” she said. On Rock, according to Reid, serves a varied list of families – all of whom are impacted by the economy. “As companies decide to downsize and layoff say 50 people that are aged 55 and over, who’s going to hire those people? Getting a job at 55 is a difficult task,” he said. To donate non-perishable foods, like canned or dry goods, or, to simply make a cash donation to On Rock, visit onrock.org or call 514-696-1905. TC Media – Courtesy Congregation Beth Tikvah Three local charities were the beneficiaries of some holiday generosity last week – courtesy of the Congregation Beth Tikvah. The Dollard des Ormeaux congregation donated over $100,000 worth of new clothing to the Mada Community Centre, Sun Youth, and the Old Brewery Mission as part of the first annual Beth Tikvah Holiday Mission. “There is no question that a greater number of families in Montreal are facing economic hardships. The ups and downs of the economy continue to take a heavy toll on families,” the congregation’s Rabbi Mark Fishman said in a statement. “The Beth Tikvah Holiday Mission is all about community, sharing and helping those in need which is a great testament to the human spirit.” Each charity received between three to five pallets, worth around $30,000-35,000, of new t-shirts, sweaters, jackets and more on Dec. 16. Fishman launched the mission earlier this year, with the hope of establishing an annual staple in the West Island. The synagogue, which received the donated clothing from its annual bazaar and a number of manufacturers, has already upped the challenge for next year, setting a goal of $250,000 worth of new clothes. Congregation Beth Tikvah was founded in 1964 by a group of young families who were considered pioneers of Jewish life in the West Island. 12 PUCKS & PUCK BaG $24,99 Reg.$33.99 BaUER 9900 HElMET ON SalE NON COMBO Reg $229.99 Reg $199.99 SALE $149.99 SALE $119.99 GREaT iDEaS FOR STOCKiNG STUFFERS REEBOK & CCM PRO STOCK STiCKS Starting at $119,99 aVERRaBlE iN GRiP aND NON GRiP SR. Campbell Company of Canada, proud supporter of President’s Choice Children’s Charity since 2006, presented a cheque of $5000 on December 5th 2014 at the Kirkland Provigo Le Marché store! To date, Campbell has contributed nearly $300,000 to nutritional programs across Canada for kids with disabilities through President’s Choice Children’s Charity. Souptember, a festival of delicious featuring new soup innovation and its perfect Pepperidge Farm pairing, was created to further grow the partnership between Campbell and Loblaw. A portion of the proceeds from all Campbell’s and Pepperidge Farm products sold throughout September at Provigo Le Marché Kirkland helped provide adapted equipment for local families with disabilities and provide nutritious lunches for kids who might otherwise go the whole day without eating. This year, $50K will be donated to PC Children’s Charity on behalf of Campbell Souptember. Local residents have a large appetite for soup and thanks to their high per-capita soup consumption, the local store has been selected to accept a cheque for $5,000 from Campbell on behalf of the charity.
