S a i l i n g N e w s f o r Tell Tales C o m m o d o re ’s L o g by Peter Cipes G S Ta k e s P C ’ s R C To A z Hello Telltales Readers, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! As I sit writing my monthly Log I can see a fair amount of snow in the Cascades. Keep doing your best snow dances and let’s make this winter one to remember, with enough snow to fill the lakes in the Spring! This month I’d like to admit to you what a terrible sailor I am. Not in a real boat, but with a Remote Controlled (RC /Model) boat. Notice how I didn’t - can’t actually - say “in” an RC boat. And that’s the crux of the problem. If I am not onboard I can’t feel anything. And if I can’t feel anything I become a fumbling, cursing mess. I look at my boat, with disgust, perhaps 50 ft away, becalmed, as other boats sail right by, and wonder, as I fiddle uselessly with the RC unit, what (the $%#!) is going on out there? I think it’s because I sail a lot by feel. I feel the wind on my head and ears and face and know, without thinking, exactly what it’s doing, and how to respond. I can smell a puff coming, and instinctively make sure that the sheet is either in my hand, or very close. Oh, and I can immediately suss out if I am or am not on a collision course with another vessel (or a giant lily pad?) which is not the case with an RC boat. I have crashed into opponents on numerous occasions. Usually they look at me and say (or think) something like, “Hmm. I always thought Peter was a good sailor. But that was really lame.” It’s not that I haven’t been lucky at times. I have won a few races. But usually these wins had barely anything to do with skill, and more to do with flukiness. And luck. Dumb luck. Sometimes I have won because I accidentally rammed another boat, and somehow ended up in front. Other RC sailors seem to have less of an issue with this disconnect. Somehow they understand that RC sailing is not “real” sailing. It’s sort of like a video game. And they seem to be okay with that. They just take it in stride. And they usually beat me! After a few years of futile attempts at improving my RC skills I eventually just sort of gave up. One particular friend who shall remain nameless (okay, his initials are GS) has been the most vocal and active in trying to get me to participate more in RC racing. Of course he is somehow naturally good at (Commodore’s Log continued on page 2) Page 1--December, 2015 D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 5 RYC 2015 Calendar D e c e m b e r 12 Saturday—SOCIAL—Holiday Party W H E R E : J e s s e & K a t y R e p p ’s h o m e 514 Siskiyou Blvd. Ashland, OR 97520 WHEN: 6:00 p. m. So, a while back, as a sort of enticement to get me more RC inspired, GS offered to get me some cool miniature boat name decals and racing stripes. It was a very nice offer. He asked me to choose a boat name, and a color for the lettering and stripes. Then one day he handed me an envelope containing the decals. Like the uninspired RC klutz that I am, I never put them on the boat. Subsequently, while I was moving my RC boat (to make more room in the garage, or something) I accidentally broke the mast. Right at the spreaders. This was about a year ago I think. And I never fixed it. So, this fall, as GS was preparing to leave the RV for AZ, he said, “Why don’t you let me take the RC boat with me and I’ll get it all fixed up?” Of course I agreed! And the following pictures are the result. A repaired and re-rigged Sea Alice. Now with the “new stiffer rig.” A r o u n d D o c k s Looking to Buy a Sailboat? Scott Rogers a former member and past commodore of RYC is selling his Erickson 23. Also, long time members Eric and Heather Martin have placed there S2 7.9 for sale. 1975 Ericson 23-II Sailboat: This is the model with the shoal draft keel and centerboard which enhances it's gunk-hol ing abilities and trailer ing ability. The double axle trailer for this boat is included. Also in cludes: 9 bags of sails (original), spinnaker gear, Evenrude 7.5 hp outboard, a brand new Standard Horizon VHF radio, all standing and running rigging, ground tackle, porta-potti, misc. gear, life jackets, spares, etc. It is a complete, trailerable sailing vessel that can sleep four. A very solid boat, however, it is is being sold "as is" because the centerboard is needing repair or replacement. I have the patterns and dimensions, and the plug used for the fiberglass mold when the centerboard was replaced in 1997 (see photo below). “Sea Alice, hard on the breeze, leads the pack.” (Of course it’s GS at the controls!)
