On September 28, 2012
the Executive Board of the
Osage Arts Community of
Belle, announced the success
of their fundraising efforts
in 2011 and 2012 to “Bring
Art to Belle” by raising
over $200,000 for the OAC
Center’s
capital
expenditures.
These
resources enable the further
renovation and expansion of
its facilities located in
downtown Belle.
The OAC has been in
Belle for almost ten years
and is thriving
as
an
artist’s
residency
organization
providing
professional
quality art
programming at a national
level. The artists’ facility is
located on a 165 acre farm
on Highway D.
The
residency contributes to the
Midwest cultural vitality by
supporting artists through
this diverse program and
sustaining an environment
that advances the artistic
endeavors of artists. The
program allows
literary
and visual artists an isolated
and serene environment to
work
creatively without
one’s daily distractions.
Participating artists also
support art in Belle’s local
classrooms.
McClane
said
the
downtown Art Center was
an idea developed by
OAC’s
artists,
who
expressed their desire to
“get more involved in the
community”.
“They
all
would
comment on the genuine
goodness of the people of
Belle and that they wanted
to give back to the
community,” McClane said.
“They suggested a local
center to exhibit their art
and engage the community.
The space would facilitate
art making, exhibitions and
discussions. After careful
consideration, the OAC
Executive Board began
planning to bring this idea
to fruition.”
In the Fall of 2009, they
began their search for a
building in downtown Belle
to develop a professional
space to showcase OAC
artwork. After looking at a
number of possible sites, the
executive board decided on
the building at 100 S.
Alvarado owned by Dianne
and Steve Swanson. After
the
very
amicable
negotiations were
concluded the building was
purchased.
During 2010-2011 the
OAC
executive
board
pursued funders for the
project. Because of these
difficult economic times for
the citizens of Belle, the
decision was made to not
solicit financial support
from local citizens. The
development focus was
directed nationally and
primarily toward California
and specifically San Diego
and Los Angeles Counties.
After a focused effort the
initial funding of $125,000
for the Capital Fundraising
Campaign was realized on
January 15, 2011 and the
remaining effort throughout
2011 and 2012.
This project could not
have been possible without
the national support of
visionaries including the
General Electric Foundation,
the John Hayden Fund,
Michael Cantrell of Orange
County, CA, Alice and Ron
Collette of Orange County,
CA, Dianne and Steven
Swanson of Belle, Brenda
and
Roger Viera of
Guadalajara, MX, and Dan
Robbins of Riverton, New
Jersey.
The
following
contributors are also from
Orange County California:
Brian Dick, Brian Saborin,
Bob Sohrabain,
Chris
Henry, Deb and David
Giorda, Mike Nall, Mike
Pellini, and Wilf Voge.
OAC is very grateful to
the vision of the individuals
who believed and continue
to support ongoing
programming.
“We are also grateful to
all the citizens of Belle who
have supported OAC for the
now almost ten years. We
are
supported by their
generosity of spreading the
message of OAC, by
volunteers lending a hand
when needed, and by the
genuine enthusiasm and
well wishes of everyone
from Belle. We can never
thank you enough, but our
hope is that this Art Center
will be a start to paying back
all the welcome we have
received over the years,”
McClane added.
This project is at the
heart of the OAC mission.
Through
it,
OAC
encourages a new and
diverse group of people to
think of themselves as
supporters and patrons of
Art. Simultaneously, it
builds lasting relationships
between individual artists
and patrons, creating a new
base of support for the
practice.
The
construction
schedule
had been
underway since January,
2010. With the initial
purchase of the building, the
renovation costs, and the
programming
expenses,
OAC
has infused over
$200,000 into the local and
regional economy.
OAC is a privately
funded, non-profit artist in
residence program and now
an arts education center. At
this time, the OAC receives
no
operational
or
programmatic funding from
local, state, or federal
government.
