2014-2015 Annual Report - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest
ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 Big Sister Antonia Little Sister Tiarra MESSAGE FROM BOARD CHAIR It has been my honor to serve as the board chair for the last year. We have many things to celebrate and to be thankful for as we continue to fulfill our promise to “start something for a child” in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. This year, the agency served 635 children, an 8% increase over last year. The success of this organization can be attributed to decades of strong leadership rooted in a clear focus on our mission to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The Big Brothers and Big Sisters also play a pivotal role in the success of the agency and in the lives of their Littles. One example of the impact of the one-to-one mentoring relationship is exemplified by Big Sister Pamela Homyak, who was named Big Sister of the Year for the state of Florida. Pamela has been matched with Little Sister Skyler for 5 years. Congratulations, Pamela & Skyler! Locally, Alice Rocheblave, Frederick “Josh” Amerine, Doug Werber, Richard Davitt, and Adam Buff were named Bigs of the Year for Escambia (2), Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Bay counties, respectively. Congratulations to all! The agency continues to be the recipient of grant funding to bolster our efforts. One of our defining moments this year was to receive an Impact 100 grant of $102,500. “100 Men in 100 Days” was a campaign to attract 100 men to be Big Brothers as we have more boys on the waiting list than girls. We were able to surpass our goal by recruiting 135 Big Brothers! In addition to our grant funds, the agency also derives success from its fundraising efforts. One event, the Big Gala, formerly known as Corks N’ Canvases, grossed over $181,000 in a Wizard of Oz themed event. The future looks bright for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. I encourage you to make a difference by volunteering as a mentor or by making a financial contribution. Sincerely, Kevin W. Bailey, Ph.D. University of West Florida 2014-2015 Board Dr. Kevin W. My commitment to you is to speak clearly and candidly—as if I were providing the update to a colleague or friend. In that spirit, three things come to mind when I think about how to summarize 2014-2015: success, excitement, and optimism. MESSAGE FROM CEO Success: Touching the lives of 635 children, an 8% increase in total children served. Our new website launched; so take a look when you can (www.bbbsnwfl.org). We received $146,000 in additional state funding to support Big/Little matches with a focus on education and service to children who have one or both parents incarcerated. We instituted technology efficiencies and a weekly newsletter to our Bigs we call the Virtual Big Talk. We partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast for office space. Lastly, we were awarded an IMPACT grant from the Pensacola Bay Area IMPACT 100 for our “100 Men in 100 Days” recruitment campaign, and we are pleased to share that we recruited 135 men. Excitement: With success comes excitement of course, and to hear the feedback from the communities we serve and from our Bigs is truly amazing. Staff is very, very busy! What an awesome group who is committed and eager to support our mission and impact our Littles’ lives. You ROCK! Optimism: By far and away the most important of the three. It’s our foundation of courage. It makes us feel better, and it’s what’s holding us together. Yes, it’s been another special year for Big Brothers Big Sisters, but the best is yet to come! On behalf of everyone at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, I want to express my appreciation to all who contribute to our success including our Bigs, staff, collaboration partners, workplace and community donors, board of directors, community board members, and many more who help move our organization forward. Thank you for believing in our mentoring mission. Your support allows us to change lives every day. Thank you for your confidence!
