Kindergarten to 8th Grade
For the second consecutive Sunday we hear about
food in both the first and the Gospel readings and as always
God the Father is at the center of the action. Both readings
highlight that all food or nourishment has one source–God.
God not only provides man’s physical needs but also his
spiritual needs. While the excerpt from “Exodus” deals
with physical nourish, John proclaims bread for the spiritual
life in Christ given in the Eucharist.
As the Israelites wonder in search of Canaan, they
frequently stray from the tenants of the Covenant. They
forget what God has already done for them. This pattern of
forgetfulness is often repeated in scripture even after they
are settled in Canaan. So they grumble to Moses and Aaron
about their current plight expressing a wonder that they may
have done the wrong thing in leaving the “comforts” of
Egypt where bread and vegetables were plentiful. What we
must see in this scene is God’s testing their trust or faith in
him to provide all that they need in this journey.
Seemingly God preordains events. When we study
the Sinai Peninsula two realities emerge. The manna is the
secretion of two insects that live on the tamarish tree. The
substance drops from the tamarisk to the ground where it
hardens somewhat in the night air. The quail migrate to
Europe in the spring and return in the fall. When they land
exhausted on the west coast of the Sinai, they can be easily
captured. The Lord supplies in mysterious ways.
When God grants Moses’ request for food, he stipulates a condition. “Each day the people are to go out and
gather their daily portion’ thus will I test them, to see
whether they follow my instruction or not.” But God allows
a double portion to be gathered on the sixth day, for none
may be gathered on the Sabbath.
When the manna and the quail come as promised
by God, the Israelites question ”What is this?” They do not
recognize this new food, nor do they understand its source.
Moses must explain: it is food sent by God who continues to
care for them.
All of this is much like Jesus’ explaining how God
continues to care for man by sending him, Jesus, to be the
bread of life in a new form. Jesus admonishes, “Do not
work for food that perishes but for food that endures for
eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”
As usual the Old Testament reading tends to set a
theme for the Gospel reading. The suggested connection
this time is the necessity for food: food for the body and
food for the soul. Faith or trust assures us that God “will
provide.”

Contemplative Prayer

In the Catholic tradition, we have many kinds of prayer.
We have liturgical prayer, which follows a set ritual and is
prayed communally. Then, we have personal or private prayer, which has often been divided into prayers of praise,
thanksgiving, contrition, and supplication. These prayers
acknowledge God’s greatness, express our thanks for all God
has done for us, express our sorrow for our sins, and ask God
for what we need.
But throughout our history, Catholics have also engaged
in contemplative prayer. This sort of prayer or meditation is
much less about saying things to God, and is more about
listening to what God is saying to us. The Catechism of the
Catholic Church, in its section on contemplative prayer,
quotes St. Teresa who wrote, “Contemplative prayer in my
opinion, is nothing else than a close sharing between friends;
it means taking time frequently to be alone with him who we
know loves us.” In its sixteen paragraphs on contemplative
prayer, the Catechism eloquently describes aspects of this
kind of prayer, calling it a “gift,” a “gaze of faith fixed on Jesus,” “hearing the Word of God,” and an experience of silence (CCC, nos. 2709–2724).
What the Catechism doesn’t describe is how to do it. For
that information, I’d recommend the writings of those who
have excelled at this kind of prayer, specifically saints like
John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Catherine of Siena, Teresa
of Liseaux, and Julian of Norwich. Contemporary expressions
of contemplative prayer include methods like scripture prayer and Eucharistic adoration.
Prayer is the essential communication of the Christian life,
and contemplative prayer challenges us to make sure that
we’re not just speaking to God, but actively listening to
God’s speaking to us.

GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS
Bishop Malesic invites all couples celebrating their 50th
Wedding Anniversary during the calendar year 2015 to
participate in a special Golden Jubilee Mass to be held at
the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral on Sunday, October
18, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. The Jubilarians, their children, relatives or friends should contact their local parish office to
register couples for this celebration. Even though
they may not be able to attend the Mass, they will receive
a scroll signed by the Bishop commemorating their anniversary. Please call the parish office at 724-423-4431 to

Saint Vincent Parish in Latrobe will hold a divorce support
group using The Catholic’s DIVORCE SURVIVAL
GUIDE, featuring 30 minute DVD showings followed by
group discussions with fellow participants covering the topics of shock, denial, anger, grief, guilt forgiveness, the kids,
annulment, dating and much more. The 12 weekly sessions
will be Wednesdays from September 16-December 16
(includes a break on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving)
from 7 - 9 p.m. in the parish center conference room. The
$20 registration fee covers a “Personal Survival Guide” and

BISHOP MALESIC TO CELEBRATE
LOCAL MASSES
Bishop Malesic will be traveling throughout the
Diocese of Greensburg to celebrate a series of
“Local Masses” between July 21, 2015 and September 3, 2015.
The purpose of these gatherings is to afford Bishop Malesic an
opportunity early in his Episcopal ministry to gather with the
clergy and laity.
A schedule of the dates and locations of these celebrations is
listed below.
The structure for these evenings will include Mass at 7:00 PM
and a social open to the public following each Mass.
These evenings of celebration have been scheduled in a manner that will afford Bishop Malesic the opportunity to familiarize himself with the different geographical regions of our Diocese as well as provide venues that can accommodate a large
number of attendants for both the Mass and Reception.
The schedule for these evening celebrations takes into account
the reality that while most clergy and laity will choose to participate in a celebration that is in closest proximity to their
parish, individuals may participate in a celebration on any date
which best fits their schedule.
No reservations are necessary to attend any of these Masses or
receptions.

ORIENTATION FOR NEXT PARISH SECRETARY
will begin on August 17th. Grace Montagna will take over
for Pat Lucas at the end of August. Grace is currently the
secretary at St. Cecilia Church in nearby Whitney, where
she has worked for the last two years. Before that she
served in the same position for St. Joseph Church in Everson, St. Cecilia Church in Grindstone and St Hedwig
Church in Smock (now closed).
2014-15 ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT was examined and approved by our parish Finance Council on July
20th. Copies were also given to our Pastoral Council on
