Nagy sikerrel mutatta be a Manchesteri Magyar Közösség Kulturális
Csoportja a Szerelmem Eleftheria c. zenés előadását március 14-én.
Az előadás helyszíne zsúfolásig megtelt, az eseményen kb. 120 ember
vett részt. A bemutatót követően a sütemények és teák mellett közös
együttlétre, beszélgetésre volt lehetőség.
Az előadást az adománygyűjtés nemes gesztusával is egybekötötték a szervezők a „Határon
túliak a határon túliakért” program elindításával, mely az egész Nagyböjt folyamán tart, amiből
a kárpátaljai nehéz körülmények között élő magyar családokat kívánják támogatni. A szervezők
köszönetüket fejezik ki minden kedves támogatónak és nézőnek, akik valamilyen formában
hozzájárultak az előadás megvalósításához és sikeréhez.

MIZU? – TRADITION
The original ice bucket
“Through the greenwood going
I saw a blue violet growing
I saw it start to wither
Can I water this flower?”
Small boys learn this rhyme when they are still in the kindergarten, and
they sing it to girls on Easter Monday. They promptly sprinkle the girls
with eau de cologne — without waiting for an answer, of course. Many
young men, even older men, do the same, though the range of verses
at their disposal is rather wider, sometimes more sophisticated,
occasionally more spicy.
This practice goes back to an old country custom. On Easter Monday, young farmhands are
allowed to throw a bucket of cold well water over girls of marriageable age; and even to dip
them in a stream. The girls scream and resist, but are secretly delighted. Now eau de cologne
has mainly replaced the water. A few splashes, rather than a costly bucketful, suffice. The ritual
now involves women of all ages, married or unmarried, with female relations just as much a
target as girlfriends, neighbors and work colleagues.
The day still has special significance for unmarried women and girls. They wear pretty clothes
and await the unannounced arrival of their admirers. Girls take a pride in attracting many
visitors and “waterers.” After the boy has carried out his ritual role, he is offered gaily painted
eggs, home-baked cookies, and an alcoholic drink. He is then free to go on to the next girl. The
sprinkling with water and the gift of Easter eggs is a pre-Christian fertility symbol far older than
the celebration of Easter.

Hagyomány – Húsvéti locsolkodás
challenge
A
magyar ice bucket challenge
Hollókő egyik legismertebb
és leglátványosabb húsvéti népszokása. A falu összes,
hagyományos népviseletbe öltözött eladó lányát kötelező
ilyenkor eláztatni. Nincs olyan pörgős rakott szoknya a
faluban, ami ilyenkor száraz marad! A locsoláshoz a legények
egy vödörnyi hideg kútvizet használnak, hogy a lányok el ne
hervadjanak idő előtt. A legenda szerint a friss, húsvéti kútvíz
megőrzi a szépséget és az üdeséget. Valami mást is jelenthet,
mert a tavaly meglocsolt lányok közül többnek az idén már
többen kerekedő pocakkal vesznek részt az ünnepségen.
Korábban mindenhol vizet használtak a locsolkodáshoz,
mára ez a szokás átalakult és a fiúk parfümöt, kölnit hordanak
ilyenkor maguknál. Hollókő az egyetlen olyan hely, ahol a
fiatalok a régi hagyomány szerint vízzel locsolkodnak.
A húsvéti hagyományok eltűnőben lévő kulturális értékeink közé
tartoznak, ám Hollókőn ezeken a napokon megtalálható
mindaz, ami a magyar ünnepet jellemzi. Hímes tojás,
magyar sonka, locsolóversek, sokszoknyás, vízsugár elől
visítva menekülő lányok és színes forgatag jellemzi az
eseménysorozatot...

The historical and cultural links between Britain
and Hungary are almost as old as the state of
Hungary itself. Apart from Germany, Italy and
France, it is to Britain and the British spirit that
Hungary’s cultural development is most in
debted. There is a close relationship also
between British and Hungarian political and
constitutional thought. It was not for
nothing that J. A. Blackwell, a political agent
of the British Government in the first half of the
19th century, and a good friend of the Hungarians, called the latter “the Britons of the East”,
and Englishmen “the Magyars of the West”.
Already in those days the shortest and safest
route to the Near East led through Hungary,
just as later, in the days of the steam-boat, it led
through the valley of the Danube and as, in our
own days, it leads along the London-Istanbul
transcontinental railway, motor and air lines. It
was along this road that in the eleventh century
the pilgrims passed back and forth and that, in
1058, Alfred, Bishop of Worcester, came crusading. In 1095 St. Ladislas, King of Hungary, was
invited to become leader of the Crusade, and
the delegation which came to offer him the
post counted Englishmen among its members.

Archbishop Lucas Bánffy, an intimate of King
Géza II of Hungary, belonged in Paris to the circle
of John Salisbury, Thomas Becket, and Walter
Mapes. We know of a Hungarian prelate, one of
the framers of the Hungarian Golden Bull, who
was the guest of the author of the Magna Charta, Archbishop Langton, in Canterbury. Learned
English priests brought with them the cult of
St. George and propagated it particularly in
Transylvania.

Medieval English and Hungarian connections
were determined and fostered by two factors:
the consciousness of Christian community, and
dynastic interests. As early as the first half of
the 11th century we find English guests at the
Hungarian royal court, and those no lesser
personages than Edward and Edmund. Edward,
son of Edmund Ironside, married the daughter of
King St. Stephen and stayed there until the year
1057. His daughter, St. Margaret, became the
wife of King Malcolm of Scotland. Many Scotch
families, like the Drummonds and Leslies, trade
their descent from the Hungarians who
followed the royal family to Scotland.

Andrew Zsigmond is a doctor in Liverpool.
He was born in Transylvania of Sekler-Magyar stock into a family ennobled in
1604. His parents moved to Hungary in 1944, where he was educated, studying
medicine at the University of Pécs, where he became involved in the Hungarian
Revolution. The uprising was brutally crashed in 1956 and with his friends he
escaped into Austria, where he was recruited to work as an
apprentice coal miner in Yorkshire. He soon gained a place as a medical student
at Liverpool University, qualifying as a doctor in 1961.
He has worked as a physician since and now has a private practice in the city.
In 1963 he became a British subject and for a few years was involved in politics,
standing for Parliament in 1992 as a Conservative candidate. In 1993 he was
made Honorary Consul for the Republic of Hungary and was decorated for his
part in the uprising by the President.

DOING BUSINESS IN BUDAPEST
My first trip to Budapest
I visited Budapest recently after hearing from friends it was well worth a
visit. That was an understatement. Having visited the conventional european
capitals of Paris, Madrid, Rome, and Berlin, Budapest offers something quite
different from all of these.
Firstly the history and architecture is awesome. You get a slightly decadent
bohemian feel in almost every building you see. This may be down to a post
communism lack of investment in its many historic buildings, but it only adds
to the charm of Budapest.
In the main tourist areas, most people speak enough English for you to get
by without any problems, and the city feels incredibly safe, certainly safer than
a big city in England. As in any city in the world, take reasonable precautions,
and do not be taken in if approached by someone selling the latest Iphone. If
The (in)famous 6:3 on a wall you do not present yourself naively, you will get no trouble. Budapest is a big
city, and you could easily spend a few days there doing new and different things on a very modest budget.
In short Budapest is a safe, beautiful city, that is relatively cheap, and very eager to please. I found it to
be a charming, and enlightening experience. Will I go back? Too right! Later this year for the F1 Grand Prix,
24-26 July, 2015.
