Asia Logistics Summit
to Drive PH Growth
T
he biggest names and figures in the shipping and logistics industry
gathered at the recently concluded Asia Logistics Summit 2015
presented by LBC Express. This year’s summit, held at the Makati
Diamond Residences, tackled Challenges and Opportunities in
logistics here in the Philippines.
The logistics industry is
in a unique position to
contribute and benefit
from the Philippine’s
growing economy.
– JAVIER MANTECON
LBC Chief Marketing Officer
LBC’s Chief Marketing Officer Javier
Mantecon welcomed the participants to the
event that he described as ‘both significant
and timely.’
“In the coming years, the logistics
industry is in a unique position to contribute
and benefit from [the Philippines’s growing
economy], hence there is a need to ensure
its efficiency, capabilities, and ability to
integrate new players and technologies,”
he said.
In line with the theme, LBC Express
Senior Vice President Charlie Villaseñor
took the stage and discussed sustaining
logistics growth through three E’s: Ethics,
Excellence, and e-Enablement through
technology. In his presentation, he stressed
that ethics and sustainability in the logistics
industry is not an option, but a must. He
also emphasized that technology enables
better logistics and supply chains, which
will help the logistics workforce excel
through professionalization.
One of the distinguished guests of
the event was Bureau of Customs (BOC)
Commissioner Alberto Lina. He emphasized
on the importance of compliance and
cooperation between logistics companies
and the government. “In logistics, name
of the game is speed,” he enthused. “For
our country to become more competitive in
the global market, we need to accelerate
the pace of getting things done across
all members of the supply chain,” he
continued.
Lina further explained that if everyone,
from the customers, the logistics companies,
and the government are working together,
it will help ‘the momentum of reform up
to speed.’
Another highlight is an open panel
discussion between attendees of the event
and the guest experts comprised of BOC
Commissioner Lina, LBC CEO Santiago
Araneta, LBC President Miguel Camahort,
Asian Tigers Mobility Vice President Brian
Lane, DHL Philippines Country Managing
Director Suzie Mitchell, and EMotors CEO
Elizabeth Lee.
Each panelist contributed insights
on current directives that align with both
the government and the private sector,
effectively giving birth to unified ideas for
the improvement of logistics and supply
chain processes.
LBC’s Camahort closed the summit
with a hope that the Asia Logistics Summit
would continue. “We need to hold [the Asia
Logistics Summit] more often,” Camahort
said. “With the great shipping and logistics
minds gathered here today, it’s sure that
we’ll always learn something new,” he
concluded.
The Asia Logistics Summit was
organized by the Asia CEO Forum. This is
the second run of the annual event.
The unforeseen price of progress is the stifling of mobility (read:
horrendous traffic and other transport problems), so there is
a great need for creative and innovative ways to move around
people and goods. And as necessity is the mother of invention,
many start-ups in the Philippines, who have experienced the
mobility and transport challenges around the metro, are never
short of these ideas.
3 Start-Ups

Innovations
E
leven such start-ups recently
presented their innovations to
a discerning panel of judges at
the Impact Hub Fellowship on
Innovation in Mobility with LBC. Out
of the 11 who pitched, three companies—
namely SkyEye, Wave, and Food Planners
Inc.—walked away with prizes worth up
to Php200,000 each. The winners received
seed funding, coaching and mentoring, skill
development, inspiring coworkspace, and
access to 73 international Impact Hubs with
12,000 members worldwide.
SkyEyeInc. — Realizing a deficiency
in the real estate market, with at least
12 million parcels of untitled land, and
unnecessarily long and gruelling acquisition
and transactional processes, the team
at SkyEye provide customers an efficient
alternative to comprehensively survey
various land and properties with the help
of customized drone technology as well as
detailed mapping software.
Wave — A welcome addition to the
growing sharing economy, Wave is a
community-based ridesharing service with
a polished strategy targeting residential
communities and the urban professionals
seeking even more affordable options for
their daily commute.
Food Planner —
 A post-harvest food
processing initiative that focuses on
farmers, who lack access to the mainstream
commercial market. By targeting the
foundation of the agricultural supply chain,
they are attempting to optimize value chain
management by directly connecting the raw
material suppliers (farmers) to their end
clients (markets, wholesalers, restaurants,
and more).
LBC and Impact Hub started the Impact
Hub Fellowship on Innovation in Mobility
with LBC to encourage more up-and-coming
entrepreneurs to share their ideas to the
world, and eventually turn them into the
reality that they envisioned them to be.
“As a company that prides itself in
continuously seeking ways to transform the
industry and pioneer new ways, we wanted
to be part of an initiative that will cultivate
ingenuity and help participants focus it into
something tangible. We are glad to have
found these three ambitious enterprises”
said Dino G. Araneta, LBC Express Chief
Strategy Officer.
Araneta was part of the panel of
judges composed of Javier Mantecon (Chief
Marketing Officer of LBC Express), Rajan
Uttamchandani (CEO of Esquire Financing
Inc.), Julia Nebrija (World Bank Consultant
and Chair of Inclusive Mobility Network),
Joselito Annonuevo (Chief Digital Officer,
LBCX), and Mathias Jaeggi (Co-Founder,
Impact Hub Manila).
For this phase of the competition,
each of the winning teams (now known as
Cohorts) will go through another intensive
three-month development program for a
chance to become the winning Impact Hub
Fellow, who will be entitled to an additional
PhP250,000 seed funding as well as other
additional start-up support worth over
PhP500,000.
We wanted to be part
of an initiative that will
cultivate ingenuity
and help participants
focus it into something
tangible.

Achieving Communication
Harmony in Logistics
LBC partners with PLDT ALPHA Enterprise
for reinforced communication and collaboration
D
igital technologies have greatly contributed in enhancing logistics
operations that have grown in volume and complexity. And for a
corporation such as LBC, utilizing these digital tools are more critical
than ever for business growth and success.
Founded in the 1950s, the Luzon
Brokerage Company originally was a
brokerage and air cargo provider, later on
expanding into express courier and money
remittance services. Today, LBC is easily
recognized as one of the country’s leading
logistics companies, operating more than
3,000 branches in over 5 continents.
A New Era for Digital Logistics
LBC’s digital strategies now permeate
throughout its two divisions: Retail and
Corporate. For the retail segment, the
company’s main target is improving and
optimizing their CRM investments, as well
as strengthening the product development
team. For their corporate arm, they are
relentlessly innovating their signature
suites of solutions for small and medium
enterprises (SMEs) and multinational
corporations (MNC).
“We use handheld devices to capture
digital point of deliveries (PODs) to
streamline all manual processes in data
encoding. With quicker exchange of
information, we can enhance our customer
service,” said LBC President and COO Mike
Camahort.
To better respond to these concerns,
LBC embraces technology for more effective
strategies and efficient business operations.
“ICT is an integral part of our business. In an
era that is increasingly demanding and everchanging, having the proper technology will
give us a definite advantage against our
competitors,” he said.
The Rise of Unified Communications
Unified communications (UC) solutions
open new communication and collaboration
gateways. As this becomes increasingly
obvious, more and more enterprises are
deploying the solution in for tighter and
better coordinated operations.
Based on a report published by
Webtorials Editorial and Analyst Division,
commissioned by Sonus, 72% of the
respondents had partially or fully applied
UC running in their businesses. 65% of those
deployments are on-premise.
With
Unified
Communication’s
increased worldwide adoption, Philippine
enterprises are likewise investing in the
solution. As a leading ICT and digital
enabler, PLDT ALPHA Enterprise was
chosen by LBC for its UNO Managed Unified
Communications.
An Integrated Platform for LBC
LBC recently sealed a partnership with
PLDT ALPHA Enterprise to reinforce their
ICT requirements, mainly through PLDT’s
UNO Managed Unified Communications.
“We have invested heavily in our
PNP & LBC join towards
road safety and anti-criminality

LBC President and COO
infrastructure to prepare LBC to leverage
on cloud services,” Mr. Camahort said.
“As our business is heavily reliant on data
transmission, the UNO Managed Unified
Communications has vastly improved
our communication needs as well as our
capability to support our future expansion
plans,” he added.
Through this partnership, PLDT ALPHA
Enterprise provides LBC with an enterprise
communications platform that converges
real-time voice, data, and messaging
applications into a single platform,
making communication and collaboration
seamless regardless of device, network,
or location. This is especially ideal for LBC
and its multiple branches, geographically
dispersed offices, and off-site divisions.
”We at LBC have always pushed for
continuous business expansion and diversity
of services. We are glad that PLDT ALPHA
Enterprise is one of our key partners in
turning our vision into a reality, providing
us unparalleled ICT capabilities such as the
UNO Managed Unified Communications,”
enthused Mr. Camahort.
The Digital Transformation Continues
“We are honored to be part of LBC’s
journey towards digital, as they continue
to prove that technology is truly a catalyst
in business success,” proclaimed PLDT
FVP and PLDT ALPHA Enterprise Head Jovy
Hernandez. “This is just the first of many
of our partnership ventures, and we are
excited to see where this is heading in the
coming years.”
Innovation, like in the case of
LBC Express, can lend itself to
a nation’s capacity-building.
A
recent partnership between
the
Philippine
National
Police Highway Patrol Group
(PNP-HPG) and LBC is meant
to address the alarming rise of
traffic, crime and accidents in Metro
Manila—creating a strategic and
integrated approach to road safety
and efficiency.
Under the agreement, the PNP-HPG
will provide continuous education to LBC’s
ground fleet to highlight the importance
of road safety and courtesy when driving.
The police will also provide anti-catnapping
and anti-highway robbery seminars for LBC
employees.
For its part, LBC agreed to provide
PNP-HPG with real-time information on all
forms of criminal activity that their drivers
may encounter while on the road. Drivers
were also asked to be part of the HPG Rider
Intelligence Network (RIN) so they can be
partners in stopping crime on the road, like
carnapping and highway robbery.
LBC has also agreed to sponsor one of
PNP-HPG’s training rooms in the agency’s
Centre for Road Safety and Security, and
supply it with necessary equipment that
will be utilised in conducting programmed
and unprogrammed courses.

All work means all play
for LBC in KidZania Manila
L
ike any great adventure, it all starts with a journey—and this journey
begins at the KidZania airport.
There, the kids are given a boarding pass and a map to a city
that’s built entirely for them—an urban center where the buildings,
vehicles and other features typically found in any metropolis is scaled down
to accommodate children.
Unlike typical theme parks, KidZania
isn’t brimming with thrills and rides;
neither does it come outfitted with the
ever dependable gadgetry that parents use
to keep their child occupied.
At KidZania, children are given 50
Kidzos, the city’s main currency, which
they can readily spend around the city.
But once that runs out, the kids literally
have to work to earn more—and that’s
when they take on real-life jobs designed
to teach them essential life skills. Children
learn to manage hotels and restaurants,
the rudiments of fashion and TV or radio
production, the importance of farming
and agriculture, appreciate the world
of retail and publishing, experience first
hand the process of courier delivery
or manufacturing, or the basics of the
automotive and medical industry. The list,
it seems, is endless.
To make the experience realistic,
Kidzania partners with brands that share
values inherent to them—ones that
highlight the importance of learning and
education, highlighting the importance
of empowering youth for a better future;
values shared by the biggest express courier
in the Philippines, LBC.
“We choose brands that exist in the real
world to be part of this city. But because
it’s a ‘better world’ inside Kidzania, we
choose brands that match with the values
of our company,” explains Denise Peralta,
Kidzania’s Industry Partner. “It has to be
entertaining but more importantly, it has to
be educational.”
Among its most popular jobs is
becoming a member of the LBC team.
Kids line up and take turns to slip into the
familiar red smock the country’s biggest
courier company is recognized for.
“The partnership between us and
Kidzania is intended to teach kids abstract
concepts, lessons, and values present in the
real world and are simulated for kids aged
four to 14 so get a better grasp of it,” says
Dino Araneta, Chief Strategy Officer of LBC.
The LBC KidZania branch teaches kids
the value of efficiency, the benchmark
of a trusted leader in the industry, in
the simplest way possible, but also the
intangible but no less important concepts
of respect for other’s property, valuing hard
work, friendliness and customer service.
“It’s a very straightforward way of
showing children what actually happens to a
package daily and what it takes for a parcel
to get from here to there. It shows them
the people involved, the care that goes into
it, and the responsibility that comes with
it,” Dino Araneta adds.
“Here, the kids are taught the ins
and outs of what it takes to be a reliable
courier. Simple things such as recognizing
the value in a package, which requires
them to handle it with care and the idea
that they are really responsible for making
sure that that package arrives safely to its
recipients,” adds Christine Wuthrich, LBC
Foundation’s Executive Director.
It’s a job that children, as young as four,
take to heart as they go door-to-door with
the LBC trolley around the city, announcing
deliveries and politely asking KidZania
shopkeepers to sign for their packages.
At the end of their shift, they earn
their salaries, which they can spend at the
KidZania Tiangge or deposit at the bank,
where they can, yet again, learn another
abstract lesson—the value of saving.
There are a lot of jobs to choose
from. A child could be a runway model in
the morning and a firefighter over lunch or
a journalist by day’s end. And this kind of
interactive role play gives kids a chance to
learn skills and concepts that do indeed, as
the KidZania slogan goes, get themselves
ready for a better world.
Kids are taught the
ins and outs of what it
takes to be a reliable
courier.

BEYOND BUSINESS:
LBC makes it easy for
customers to give back
Poverty, global development, and societal issues. While governments debate these matters
and consider what they can do to manage it, there are others who are already taking the
first step.
LBC Express Inc., for instance, while a private
business entity, is already making an effort to
alleviate these issues with partnerships with relevant
organizations and customers who want to do their
part for initiatives.
“We have recently partnered with two
important organizations based in Canada—the
Philippine Cultural Community Center (PCCC), which
is focused on providing support and services to the
Filipino communities in Canada; and Answering The
Cry of the Poor (ANCOP), which provides community
development as well as humanitarian relief,” explains
Rafael Policarpio, LBC North America Area Head.
PCCC is focused on continuous education
information, planning and direction, health care and
social services, and social integration for migrant
Filipinos in Canada, while ANCOP is a global Catholic
community present in over 100 countries geared
towards poverty alleviation through effective child
education and various development programs and
values formation.
For the partnership, members of each
organization will be given LBC Community Partner
Cards, where LBC will donate $2.50 to their specific
organization’s cause for every transaction.
The initiative, which will begin in August, runs
through November this year and is available to all
members of the said Canada-based organizations.
The intent is simple, the process is
uncomplicated, but the end result can move many
lives.
“Ultimately, it’s a means by which LBC can give
back to the community with the help of our loyal
customers, while at the same time providing them
the kind of service that they deserve,” ends Hugo
Bonilla, LBC North America’s Senior Vice President.

Is there a metaphor more fitting for the Filipino spirit than sports? It symbolizes the challenges
you might face, the will it takes to push yourself, and the triumph that each can have simply
because they had the will to try. Perhaps it’s why there’s no other language better suited to
bring Filipinos together, no matter the distance.

or serving the Filipino community worldwide for over six decades, LBC

in its string of trophies are the Domestic
Logistics Service Provider of the Year and
Domestic Express Service Provider of the
Year from Frost and Sullivan, a Texasbased growth and partnership company
that honors companies demonstrating
best practices in various sectors, including
building,
energy,
environment
and
logistics.
The company was also a finalist for the
Global Top Employer and Most Innovative
Company categories of the Asia CEO
Awards, a body that recognized outstanding
leadership and achievements by individuals
and organizations in the Philippines.
Singapore’s Supply Chain Asia Awards,
which acknowledged corporations and
industry practitioners who have made
outstanding contributions in the fields of
supply chain and logistics, also pegged
LBC as one of the finalists for the Last
Mile Partner of the Year award. While
Malaysia’s Asean Business Awards, which
awarded enterprises in the region that
have contributed to the growth and
prosperity of the Asean economy, saw it
fit to name LBC as the top contributor for
growth in the region’s Logistics sector.
Finally, the Filipino Times, a
publication serving the Filipino Community
in the United Arab Emirates, awarded LBC
as the community’s Preferred Freight
Forwarding Company and Preferred
Remittance Service Provider.
“It is truly an honor [for LBC’s services]
to be recognized by our fellow Filipinos and
the international community, at large,”
said Javier Mantecon, chief marketing
officer of LBC Express Inc. “While we do
feel grateful for these awards, it is not
in any way an indication that we can rest
on our laurels. These awards motivate us
to do more—to serve lives, business and
communities better—to further prove
that we are worthy of these prestigious
accolades,” he said.
LBC Express Inc. is the Philippines’s

Tatak LBC,
Tatak Matulungin!
Last July 24, 2015 one of the regular and loyal customers Mr. Jack
Buenaventura who is physically challenged and on his wheelchair came to JR
Borja Branch under Yacapin Team (NMIN) to send money to his wife in General
Santos City. He travels alone from Talakag, Bukidnon to Cagayan de Oro.
He regularly sends money through IPP, only to JR Borja Branch –which
according to him that Mr. Arnel Paring (Customer Associate) never fail to
assist and help every time Arnel sees him approaching the door. Beyond the
satisfaction he gets from LBC’s service, truly he appreciates how Employee
like Mr. Arnel Paring shows Helpfulness to Customers.

TH Development Plan
Operations teamed up with HCSS to conduct a program that aims to equip
our branch and delivery operations team heads with the basic knowledge,
competencies, and skills in management and leadership.
The program, facilitated by Butch
Nayona of StrataQuest Inc., started its
first session September 9 at BSA Twin
towers and was attended by 29 NCR
Branch and Delivery Team Heads. It was
planned to take place in seven days, with
the first four allotted for the module
entitled Foundations of Leadership. In
this module, attendees learned the
differences between leadership and
management.
For four days in the month of
September, team heads were taught
about the critical items in leadership:
character and competencies. They were
asked to give an account of the challenges
and problems they had with their
teams. They had group discussions and
roleplaying scenarios about their day-today interaction with their subordinates.
One of the planned topics for the
remaining three days of the program will
focus on labor relations and is set to be
conducted on 2016.
IT’s Productivity Workshop
Last September 18, LBC’s IT Team, led by its Senior Vice President, Mr. Alfie
Deato, came together for a one-day workshop to start mapping out their
strategies for 2016 and strengthen their team to achieve their goals. The
session was held at the Hotel Jen and was facilitated by Ms. Vanessa Salvana
of Mindbrokers Corporation, a corporate training group.
It was a day packed with learning
exercises, workshops, group and class
discussions, and action-planning sessions.
At the end of the day, the team came
out with a deeper understanding and
appreciation of their roles and the
dynamics within their functional teams,
within IT Department as a whole, and
within the Company.
From the IT strategic objectives
and priorities shared by Mr. Deato, each
functional teams came up with their own
future plans.
The day’s activities were concluded
with a personal pledge of commitment
from each team member to do their part
in creating a renewed, successful team for
2016.
EXECUTIVE
DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAM
To showcase what they have learned
from classroom sessions with John
Clements, heads of respective
units teamed up to present cost
efficient recommendations for LBC.
Panelist were from the executive
committee represented by Jhayner
V. Bufi (Chief People Officer), Oscar
Torres (Chief Finance Officer),
Miguel Angel Camahort (President
and COO), Fernando Araneta (Chief
Strategy and Innovation Officer).

System (SQS) in all branches.
• Grp. 3: Breaking Bad Bert
• Grp. 4: Local Selling to Locals
• Grp. 5: eRemit (IPP substitute)
• Grp. 6: LBC Strategic Statement
Creation and Cascade
Group 4’s idea of gaining potential
revenue from targeted local accounts
that does not entail complex operations
got the juries attention the most and
was considered for implementation.
Members of group 4 are: Enrique Rey,
Ramil Aceveda, Ma. Carina De Leon,
Nino Ludwig Dayrit, Mark Octavios
Agalo-os and Victor Bellen.
The session ended with a dinner to
celebrate everyone’s effort to build a

eon was the passion… glitter was everywhere…. the night turned
bright. It was magical!
If you think that there isn’t any party more festive than a Christmas
party, wait until LBC take a little spin on things and turn it into a
shining, shimmering, splendid celebration!
Ka-LBCs gathered December 14 at the
PICC Forum Tent to celebrate yet another
year of blessings for the company and its
employees. The night was opened literally
with a bang as Buganda Drumbeaters
showcased their powerful percussive
production number in glowing costumes.
LBC President Mike Camahort welcomed
everyone, and was followed by the debut
performance of LBC’s first and official
chorale group—the LBC Vocalistas, under
the conduction of The Philippine Madrigal
Singers’ Mr. Warlito Yalung. The choir is
composed entirely of LBC employees who
serenaded the crowd with a Christmas
medley. After the songs came the dance,
and to make sure that the party’s line-up
of performances is nothing but the finest,
LBC invited the renowned Philippine Ballet
Theater to bring magic to the evening
through their world-class terpsichorean
talents.
One of the highlights of the night
was the presentation and the recognition
of LBC’s 2015 Service Awardees. Ka-LBCs
all over the world who have been with
the company for a certain period of time
were given recognitions. Another highlight
of the evening was the premiere of the
LBC Christmas music video, featuring KaLBCs from around the world, lip syncing
and dancing to Demi Lovato’s rendition of
Wonderful Christmas Time.
To prove that LBC employees aren’t
just loyal employees but talented ones as
well, a dancing competition dubbed as Dance
upon a Shining, Shimmering, Splendid Dream
was participated by different groups who
showed their dance floor prowess and killer
moves. XB Hangar, the team from Money
Backroom, emerged victorious. If there was
a most anticipated performance of the night
that would be the recently hailed Asia’s Got
Talent’s Champion— El Gamma Penumbra,
who did not disappoint the eager crowd with
their world-class shadow play performance
especially prepared for LBC.
Just as how it started, the night ended
with a bang through a dance party led by a
live band, while raffle winners of exciting
gadgets and appliances are being displayed
on projectors.
Aside from that of PICC Forum,
other shining, shimmering, splendid LBC
Christmas parties were also held in different
venues throughout the country and around
the globe.

ENGAGING PEOPLE
F
Ka-LBCs work in a very stressful environment. In lifeless monotony,
we all stare at our computer monitor for hours, make documents that
must be done under the prescribed timeline, submit requirements
before the deadline, meddle with he same kind of people, and, of
course, make someone’s day while you can hardly do the same for yourself.
Can we not just stop, try do drop everything for a while, and breathe?
That’s what LBC HCSS Engagement
tried to do with Refresh, Refocus, Renew,
a series of health and wellness activities
designed to teach Ka-LBCs on how to live
healthier lifestyle through a nutritious
drink and breathing exercises.
IN stills
MEDITATION CLASS
For every Friday in the month of August,
Ka-LBCs had a chance to de-stress and have
a short break from work with Clarity West’s
meditation classes.
Clarity has been a practitioner of yoga
and meditation for over ten years and she
loves to share her knowledge for deepening
and integrating yoga into daily life.
Meditation is a practice which uses
the breath for relaxation. Deep states
of awareness and focus come from such
activity.
Clarity started her sessions with a
few stretches, postures, and movements
to prepare the mind and body for
the meditation. She taught breathing
techniques and visualizations as a means
for relaxing and coming back into our
native state of balance, peace, wellness,
and vitality.

YIN YOGA CLASS
Returning to teach Yin Yoga to Ka-LBCs
is The Flow Team’s Monica Manzano who
also happens to be a certified yoga teacher.
Yin Yoga is a slow-paced, meditative
style of yoga with poses that are held for
longer periods.
In Monica’s class, Ka-LBCs were asked
to hold a pose for three to five minutes,
accessing the deeper parts of the body such
as connective tissues and fascia.
Such activity is said to calm and balance
the mind and body, while also regulating
the energy and increasing the mobility of
the body. It may also lower stress levels,
help with migraines, and give a deeper
form of relaxation.

GREEN SMOOTHIE WORKSHOP
Starting the series is the Green
Smoothie Workshop with The Flow Team’s
Denise Bernardo, Noelle Hillario, and
Monica Monzon accompanied by Angela
Lichauco, owner of the green smoothie and
juices store Rawlicious.
The four health enthusiasts shared
their expertise, know-how, and experiences
as green smoothie advocates.
A green smoothie is simply a veggie
shake—its main ingredients are green
like kangkong, tables ng kamote, pechay,
malunggay, cucumber, and kale, giving it
a green color; hence the name. For more
flavor, fruits are added such as banana,
apple, watermelon, and pineapple.
Any combination of veggies and
fruits may be made, depending on one’s
preference. Taste enhancers like honey
may also be added, as well as other
“Superfoods” packed with health nutrients
such as chia seeds, extra virgin coconut oil,
acai berries extract, spirulina, and the like.
The team demonstrated making
different combinations of green smoothies
while also discussing their benefits and
nutritional value.
Participants had a
chance to taste the smoothies and were
pleasantly surprised to find the that were
actually tasteful.

FOR THE LONG HAUL:
THE
40
YEAR
VETERAN
&
HER LIFE
WITH LBC
Employee loyalty is something of a rarity these days,
a characteristic that is not often found because of
the growing complexities of the business landscape
and the needs of today’s employees. But loyalty is
a two-way street: If employers reward loyalty, they
won’t have to search high and low for trustworthy
workers.
I got so accustomed to working
with the company and leaving
it would be a really big change.
Just like the care that it provides
customers by moving the padama in every
padala through its global presence of
6,400 branches, partners, and agents in 30
countries, LBC prides itself in taking care
of its employees and making sure they’re
happy on the job.
This happiness and satisfaction shows
in 62-year-old Primetiva Patiño, a Team
Leader at a branch in Cebu. Fondly called
‘Nay Remy’ by colleagues, she has been
working for LBC for 40 years now and she
wants to continue working for the company
until her retirement in three years.
Nay Remy hails from South Cebu.
When she was six, her family relocated
to Davao and she lived there until she
finished college. After earning a degree
in BS Accountancy, she returned to Cebu
with hopes that she would land a job in her
hometown. While studying for her board
exams, she encountered an opportunity
that would change her life.
“I was reviewing for my Public
Accountancy certification,” Nay Remy
shares. “A friend of mine told me that
there was an opening at LBC. It was too
wonderful an opportunity to pass up so I
decided to apply immediately,” she said.
She was hired in 1975 as an accounting
clerk at one of LBC’s offices in Cebu. In
1983, she was transferred to sales in the
first airpost that opened in Coron, Palawan.
During her stint in sales, her department
always hit the quota. She remained at the
Coron branch until 2000.
Seven years later, she was transferred
back to delivery as Team Leader, a position
she still holds today. She is currently the
Team Leader of the Cebu Processing Team,
which handles customer support.
To this day, she enjoys her job and
it’s something she wouldn’t trade for
anything. She didn’t even expect she
would be this happy. All Nay Remy wanted
was a job that paid well and was stable.
“For most employees a company’s stability
is really important, and that’s what I saw
in LBC. Working for the company gave me
assurance that I won’t lose my job as long
as I worked hard.”
“This was especially true when my
husband and I had our son, Joaguin. I had
to make sure there was always food on the
table, that there’s a house we can always
go home to, that my son would be able to
finish school.”
Nay Remy said that her son made her
job with LBC more important. This has
been the driving force behind her four
decades working for the company. “I’ve
always been honest and hardworking. From
my first day until today, I haven’t violated
any of the company’s rules and I haven’t
heard my managers complain about my
performance.”
A few years after Joaguin was born,
she was offered an option for early
retirement. However, she didn’t want to
end her long-running career in the company
just yet, so she declined the offer. “I got so
accustomed to working with the company
and leaving it would be a really big change
in my life. It was a change I knew I wasn’t
prepared for.”
Nay Remy considers LBC a defining
aspect of her life. Being with the company
for 40 years, she has witnessed the
company through transitions and brand
transformations. And in those 40 years,
she was also able to buy a small house and
send her son to a reputable school. “We
were able to live a good life and I’m not
sure if I would be in the same place if it
were another company. To tell you the
truth, I’m really happy and content with
what I have right now.”
She is an example of a happy and
satisfied employee, the result of a warm
environment that LBC has fostered through
the years. For the company’s efforts in
giving her a life of peace and contentment,
Nay Remy said she plans to live out the rest
of her tenure with the same energy and
enthusiasm that she had when she started
in 1975. Until the day she retires, she
will give her best in helping the company
strengthen its commitment to move the
padama in every padala.
“I don’t know where I will be right
now or if I would even live like this if the
company didn’t give me the wonderful
opportunity for employment. So I know it
would be too early to say this but, thank
you very much LBC for these wonderful
years.”

LBC HK moves it
at the Bowling Alley
LBC Hong Kong surely know how to move it… even outside the branch!
As part of the team’s monthly meeting, associates of LBC Hong Kong conducted
a mini bowling tournament in Causeway Bay.
“It is our goal to maintain a work-life
balance for all associates in Hong Kong,”
said Arnold Cereno, Country of Manager
of LBC HK.
“We saw the value of finding time
to improve the team’s camaraderie,
teamwork and communication skills
among all our associates. We believe
that this is the most important ingredient
of LBC HK’s success this year—a simple
engagement that will build the moral and
boost the inspiration to work towards a
common goal.”
Because of its success, the team is
now considering to make this activity a
regular session, at least once every two
months. Aside from bowling, our Ka-LBCs
in Hong Kong are also planning to conduct
a badminton clinic for associates who
are eager to maintain a healthy lifestyle

Box a Smile:
A Holiday Gift for 3,000 Kids
T
he busy holiday season was made extra special with the activation
of Box A Smile, LBC’s Christmas Gift-Giving activity during which
smiles were delivered to 3,000 underprivileged children in various
communities. With the invaluable assistance of Project Pearls, the
Box A Smile gift-giving events were a success, drawing volunteers both from
the LBC & Project Pearls communities.
Project Pearls, a volunteer, nongovernment agency headed by Melissa Villa,
gathered children in the various communities
of Helping Land/Newland, Tondo, Manila,
Lubusang Alyansa ng Katutubong Aeta ng
Sambales (LAKAS) in Botolan, Zambales,
and relocated residents of Ulingan now in
Barangay Batia, Bulacan. A total of 3,000
children were treated to a Christmas party
with games and prizes, lots of dancing and
singing, and of course, food and drinks.
With these events, an overwhelming
sense of community and camaraderie was
felt throughout, in keeping with the spirit of
giving, the true spirit of the holiday season.
It was a good reminder
that this is how Christmas,
and everyday for that
matter, should be.
A time to share, and
spread joy and peace.
– NENA WUTHRICH
LBC Foundation Executive Director
Over 3,000 donor participants from the US
were engaged, and co-sponsors likewise
provided much-needed assistance for the
events.
LBC
volunteers
from
various
departments and areas participated in the
gift-giving activities: from the principals,
executives, and their children, to warehouse
personnel, associates and front-liners,
delivery associates and teams. The LBC
family came in full-force, some employees
dressed as Santa Claus, enjoining the
children and all present that it is indeed
FAMILY that truly makes the holiday season
special and memorable.
LBC and Project PEARLS partnership is more
than just a corporate partnership, it is really
a partnership for humanity. Together, we are
helping and supporting each other in making
this world a better and kinder place for all—
rich, poor or poorest.”

OFWs in Qatar lend
a hand through LBC
After Typhoon Lando hit the Philippines, numerous relief efforts were
initiated by communities all over the world to help raise funds and collect
relief goods to send to the affected citizens.
One of these supportive communities was the OFWs in Qatar who didn’t let distance
stop them from helping their kababayans back home. They coordinated closely witth the
Office of the Vice Mayor Antonio Romero in Nueva Ecija to ensure the relief goods were
delivered to those in need.
The small community started a Typhoon Lando Relief Operation and pooled their
available resources to send relief goods to those who were affected by the storm. They
were able to fill up 25 balikbayan boxes.
With LBC agreeing to be their courier partner to guarantee the fast delivery of the
relief goods, the donations arrived to the Office of the Vice Mayor within five days.
