CASH FOR CLASS - Remember, save all receipts from any store or restaurant in the Fremont Hub (including Safeway and Trader Joe’s) and Holy Spirit School receives 5 points for every $1.00 spent. The contest runs through May. If we have the most points at the end of the contest, our school will win $2,000.00. Watch for more information about special events at the Hub where we can earn bonus points. There will be a special Christmas event coming in December. Drop your receipts in the Cash for Class collection box in the school lobby. Thanks for all your help. SOPAS - Is this Saturday, November 16 at 6 pm!! Otherwise, plan to attend this traditional complimentary Portuguese meal, old fashion cake auction, and raffle. PHILIPPINE DISASTER DONATIONS - Please see the letter attached to this Update for information regarding donations for relief efforts to the Philippines after the typhoon. This is being organized by one of our parents and will be sent through LBC to the Red Cross Philippines should you be interested in donating. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BEE - In just a few short weeks, HSS will participate in the National Geographic Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society… the ultimate test of geographic knowledge. It will be the 2nd year that Holy Spirit School students in the 4th through 8th grades will be competing in the Bee. The National Geographic Bee consists of preliminary rounds; followed by a final round of holy spirit school 3930 Parish avenue Fremont, ca 94536 510-793-3553 NOVEMBER 13, 2013 CATCH THE SPIRIT edition #13 WEEKLY UP D A TE ten students, which is narrowed down to a Championship round with the final two competitors. The HSS Geographic Bee School Champion will then take a state qualifying test for a chance to advance to the state level competition on April 4, 2014. The eventual state champion earns a trip to the National Geographic Bee from May 19-21,2014 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C.; at stake, a $25,000 college scholarship prize. We encourage all 4th through 8th grade students to participate and for their families to help with their student's preparation for the Bee. Questions will include a wide range of geography topics from U.S. geography; historic places; world geography, to cultural geography. Preliminary rounds will begin after the Thanksgiving holiday with further rounds to be scheduled throughout December and the Final and Championship rounds in early January 2014. RENEW YOUR SAFEWAY CLUB CARD - We have been notified that only 59% of our families using their Safeway Club Cards have renewed them for this year. That means Holy Spirit School has stopped receiving any contribution even though families are still shopping at Safeway. It is never too late to renew. Just go to escrip.com and click on “Renew”. It is so easy and as soon as you do this, our school will start receiving your contributions again. Please, please make sure you have renewed your card. Thank you!! DOMINICAN SISTERS HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE - Be sure to see the flyer attached to this Update about the 2013 Holiday Boutique at the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24 from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. SOPAS - FESTIVAL HOURS - Please use the link below to sign up for Sopas. Signups will remain open until 5 pm on Wednesday 11/13/2013. Signups will close at 5 pm on 11/13/2013. We will be focusing on our Hot Chocolate bar! Each hot chocolate will be $1.50 per cup. You may choose from various toppings such as marshmallows, whipped cream, Ghirardelli chocolate sauce, Ghirardelli caramel sauce, and sprinkles! We are also introducing a hot chocolate stamp/punch card available for purchase in the amount of $15.00 (10 drinks). We will also have snacks to choose from for purchase based on parent donations. We'd also love some parent volunteers. Donations are greatly appreciated. One parent hour may be earned for each $25.00 donation/supplies (unlimited with receipt) or 1/2 hour per dozen baked treats (maximum 2 dozen/week please!). Treats must arrive before 7:30am in Small Hall on Friday. All proceeds from the cafe (minus costs) go back to our classrooms. In light of the recent typhoon (Yolanda/Haiyan) catastrophe in the Philippines, I would like to seek for your generous assistance and support for the thousands of Filipino families who are in dire need of food and supplies. Current needs are for the following: -biscuits/ cookies/ energy bars -vitamins (adults/children) -medicine (over-the-counter pain medications) -canned goods (easy open can) -cup noodles -toiletries (soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, etc) -socks -slippers -used/new shoes (any size) -used/new light blankets -light jackets/sweaters From Nov. 14- 19, 2013 LBC boxes will be placed near the school office where your donations will go. These will be sent to Red Cross Philippines through LBC cargo under the name of the Holy Spirit School. Receipts under the school's name will be issued as well.
